Ep. 88 Winnebago Towables06 Jan 202200:55:41

Winnebago Towables Courtesy of Winnebago

When most people think of Winnebago, they think of motorhomes, but Winnebago also has a very successful towable division. Adam Christoffersen is the Product Manager for Winnebago Towables. He joins us to talk about the history of Winnebago towables and their future as they introduce two new RV’s to their lineup, the Hike 100 and Micro Minnie FLX. These new RV’s have boondockers and outdoor enthusiasts in mind with upgraded power systems, creative storage ideas for bikes and kayaks, and ways to conserve water.

Adam also shares some of his day-to-day responsibilities, what makes Winnebago towables stand out from other towables on the market, and how Winnebago implements customer feedback into their various products.

“Winnebago is like Kleenex of tissues, which helps us stand out, but we are not just going to rest on our name. We’re looking at what type of innovative products, floor plans, and how we can build quality into our manufacturing process, so the product stands tall when it gets to the dealer and goes through their PDI process. This way, it gets to the sales lot cleaner, and with quality that’s built-in, the customer can realize it. A dealer can realize it and wants to stock more and sell more.” – Adam Christoffersen Product Manager, Winnebago Towables Division.

Collaboration Within Winnebago Courtesy of Winnebago

One of the things that we enjoyed hearing Adam talk about was how he and his towable teamwork with the different departments in the Winnebago company. For example, Adam used Winnebago’s Class B van team to brainstorm with them and come up with innovative ideas that can be used in the towable lineup. These in-house collaborations lead to some of the stand-out features in their new Micro Minnie FLX and the Hike 100.

Ep. 86 Fantasy RV Tours: Travel with Peace of Mind08 Dec 202100:44:36

Fantasy RV Tours

Have you ever dreamed of taking a once-in-a-lifetime RV vacation but fear you will miss out on some of the must-sees of that trip? Would you like to RV overseas but fear you will have trouble booking reservations and navigating in a foreign country? Fantasy RV Tours takes all that worry away and leaves the fun of RVing. Nel Fillager, CEO of Fantasy RV Tours, sits down to tell us all about the company’s history and what makes a Fantasy RV Tour so unique.

“There is no RV park right where you want to be for the activities in an event like the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, so we build our own. We bring in generators and set up big hospitality tents with services. We will have a honey wagon, a freshwater wagon, and they come in so that you are very comfortable camping where there’s no actual campground. This puts you right in the center of the event where the festival is going on. This saves you from being 30 miles outside of town and then getting stuck in all the traffic that usually comes with these big festivals and events.” – Nel Fillager CEO/Founder Fantasy RV Tours.

Tour Destinations

Fantasy RV Tours is now the largest RV Tour company globally, and they have trips for everyone ranging from 5 days up to 62 days. These trips include some of the most popular destinations, including international trips to Australia and South Africa.

If you would like to learn more about Fantasy RV Tours and see the complete list of travel destinations, you can check them out here.

Ep. 85 RV Trip Wizard25 Nov 202100:43:06

RV Trip Wizard

Driving your RV can be one of the more stressful aspects of RVing. Luckily RV Trip Wizard is there to help make RV Trips go as planned and run smoothly. Patrick Buchanan joins us today to tell us about the history of RV Trip Wizard and its many features. The slogan is, RV Trip Wizard allows you to Journey with Confidence.

https://www.rvtripwizard.com/#6199bb0a383fd

When you hit the road, you’ll know where you’re going, where you’re going to fuel up, where you’ll be stopping and whether or not you can fit in those locations. The routing is RV safe based on the RV length and propane status you enter. You can vet those locations with routing and satellite view, know the elevation, and you can check the grade. The best way to describe it is that you completely plan and vet that trip. That route that maybe once in a lifetime chance to go to the Grand Canyon, for example. You know what you’re doing before you leave the door.” – Patrick Buchanan Industry Liaison RV Life.

More Features

RV Trip Wizard can even calculate what the entire trip will cost, including fuel, food, campground stays, and more. It really does let you know before you go. RV Trip Wizard also allows you to view campgrounds, restaurants, and sight-seeing destinations along the way. It has a robust filter system that will enable you to filter out campgrounds and destinations by reviews.

https://www.rvtripwizard.com/#6199bb0a383fd

RV Trip Wizard makes it easy to try before you buy with their seven-day trial period. This gives you a whole week to try out all of the features before you decide if you want to purchase the service, which by the way, is very reasonable at $49 a year.

If you would like to give RV Trip Wizard a try or find out more about them, check them out here.

Ep. 84 Remote Work School11 Nov 202100:38:20

Remote Work School

With the ever-growing popularity of RVing and the increase of working remotely, it makes sense that more & more people are trying to figure out how to work from the road. Camille Attell, from Remote Work School, joins us today to share how her program can teach you how to successfully work remotely. When Camille hit the road full time she started a blog and, from that, was receiving a lot of questions about how to make money from the road and she saw an opportunity to share her knowledge of how to make an income from the road.

About Camille

Camille has a Master’s degree in counseling, she also had a career in development and corporate training. She was able to apply her training and education to develop a program that teaches anyone how to work remotely. The best part is, that it comes with personal coaching so you always get the answers you are looking for.

Remote Work School is an online program and is 100% remote, but what makes it different than other types of programs out there is that it comes with a coaching element, so what happens is people who are at a stage of life where they’re trying to figure out what they’re going to do maybe they’ve left a company or a job, maybe they were downsized, outsized, maybe they were even forced into remote work in 2020 and maybe they didn’t like it or choose it or doesn’t pay them enough or whatever scenario is going on for people. Remote Work School is the solution to help guide people.” – Camille Attell CEO of Remote Work School

We want to thank Camille for coming on the show, if you have been thinking about remote work, Sean and I can tell you it is great, but it does come with challenges and a learning curve and that’s where Camille’s Remote Work School is going to help you out. Camille offers a free startup version of the program, this will help you decide if going in the direction of remote work is right for you. You can check out the free version right here.

Ep. 83 Driver’s Edition – RV Myths & News28 Oct 202101:16:39

FMCA Discount

We start this week’s episode of Drivers Edition with a great discount!
If you heard our episode with Chris Smith, CEO of FMCA, and thought you would like to join, now is a great time to do so. We have partnered with FMCA to offer you $10 off your first-year membership. Use our discount code BTW10 during checkout and get $10 off your first year, making the membership fee only 50 bucks for the year.

RV Myths

In this episode, we also tackle some RV Myths and attempt to bust them, including:

  • You are running away from life or that you are antisocial
  • RVing is not safe
  • RVing is a cheap way to live
  • Dumping your tanks is a dirty job
  • You can’t make “real” homemade meals in an RV. You will usually wind up at fast food places.
  • RVing full-time is only for the retired
RV news from around the world

Here are some of the topics we discuss in this episode.

Midway KY says votes no to water and sewage for RV park

Midway RV Park in Kentucky is getting a lot of resistance to building a large RV park. The town has about 1700 people and they do not like how the RV park may impact the community.

New Lazy days dealer coming to Iowa

Lazy Days announced it is building a dealership in Council Bluffs, Iowa to serve the Omaha, NE metro area.

A solar-powered electric camper van has completed a 1,242-mile journey

Created by 22 students, this solar-powered electric drivetrain RV has everything two people need to live on the go, including a bathroom, shower, sink, toilet, sofa, kitchen area, and a double bed. During the trip, the team drove about 186 miles per day at speeds of up to 75 miles per hour. Will this be the future of RVing?

The First Production RV Built Over 100 Years Ago

Now that we have seen what the future of RVing could be, let’s talk about where it all began. The RV industry may be older than you think. In 1910, the Pierce Arrow Touring Landau was showcased as the first production RV. Even though it was built over 100 years ago, the Piece-Arrow conversion utilized many RV features that we use today in our modern RVs.

Ep. 82 Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA)14 Oct 202100:41:53

Family Motor Coach Association

If you are an RVer, then the name FMCA, also known as the Family Motor Coach Association, is familiar. But maybe you don’t know all of the benefits of being a member. Chris Smith, CEO of FMCA, joined us to talk about the history of FMCA, including changes made throughout the years. It is now open to all RVers, towables and motorhomes alike. During the interview, Chris said, “The unit doesn’t matter, the people do.”

The FMCA started with twenty-six families and has now grown to over seventy-five thousand members. Offering online education, discounts, rallies, groups/chapters to join, a monthly magazine, and more. One of the things that really caught our attention is their truly unlimited data plan. FMCA teamed up with Sprint to offer a data plan that has no throttling. If you are an RVer, you know that is a big deal.

We also learned that the FMCA is a nonprofit, which helps keep the cost of things down. This includes the cost of such as the data plan just mentioned and the in-person driving courses designed to help motorhome drivers as well as towables.

FMCAssist

“I think one of the unique things that we offer as part of the dues is a benefit we call FMCAssist. Once you’re a member, you are automatically enrolled. It’s not an insurance policy. It is a medical evacuation repatriation policy. Let’s say you’re in the middle of nowhere and you have a heart attack. You are taken to the local hospital, but it is not equipped to care for you and you need to be airlifted to the next closest hospital. FMCAssist pays for the transportation. If you are unfortunately unable to drive, we’ll take care of you and get your RV home. It is more of a peace of mind benefit. I would say it’s not a well-known policy, but the nice thing is if you go and get that policy on your own, it would be $200. So, for $50 to renew $60 to join, that alone pays for itself.” – Chris Smith, CEO of FMCA.

If you would like to find out more about the FMCA and all of the benefits, check them out here. If you decide on a membership, use our discount code BTW10, you will get $10 off the first year.

Ep. 81 Weber Grills30 Sep 202100:48:54

Hey everyone, RVing, camping, and grilling almost go hand in hand. Today we are excited to welcome Dustin Green from Weber to the show. Dustin is the Culinary Weber Grill Master and the Director of the Weber Grill Academy. He works with several aspects of the Weber company including marketing, R&D, product testing, and more. Dustin shares the long history of Weber grills and brings us to the present with the new Weber Traveler grill designed for people like us who like to take grilling onto the road. We asked Dustin what has made Weber such an icon and popular choice for grillers.

“You put a quality product on the market and then you stand behind it. Our customer service is bar none the best in the industry if not globally. We set the standards for that. People know when you buy a Weber you’re going to get a great quality grill that we stand behind and the customer service is going to be there. Word of mouth and how it travels is exponential. We rely on it and we pride ourselves on it. It’s helped us create such a great customer base” – Dustin Green Culinary Weber Grill Master and the Director of Weber Grill Academy.

The Traveler

We talk a little bit about all of Weber’s grills, but our main focus was on their new Traveler Portable Gas Grill. The Weber Traveler Portable Gas Grill is a one-piece design that has folding legs, so you can set up at any site with no table needed. It can use 1lb tanks or, with a Weber adapter hose, set up for use with a 20lb tank. The Traveler Portable Gas Grill might be compact and easy to bring on a camping trip, but it still can make some serious meals with a large cooking service that is able to accommodate 20 burgers.

We also learn about Weber’s Connect Smart Grilling Hub, which is a device that connects to your phone through an app. It measures internal cooking temperatures and gives you step-by-step assistance, including when to flip your food. It is like having a grill master right at your side.

Dustin also shares a lot of grilling tips throughout the interview to improve your grilling skills.

There really is a lot of great info in this episode and we hope you enjoy it all from the history of Weber to the new products to the tips and tricks to improve your grilling.

Ep. 80 Safe-T-Plus Steering Control16 Sep 202100:40:16

Safe-T-Plus

We are always happy to have a company on the show that is trying to make RVing safer. Kenny has been using Safe-T-Plus on his RV for over 85,000 miles and wouldn’t want to drive without it. David Leake, National Sales Manager for Safe-T-Plus joins us to discuss all of the benefits. The Safe-T-Plus was originally designed to help you safely steer to the side of the road in the event of a front-end tire blowout, but as you will hear there are many other benefits as well That is where the Plus comes into play. Most safety items are installed for a “just in case” situation, but with Safe-T-Plus you get benefits from day one with increased ease of driving. For Kenny, this meant the removal of white knuckle driving with his gas class A, but the Safe T Plus is not just for gas RV’s as David tells us.

“If someone has a gas Ford chassis or a workhorse gas model, those motor homes tend to be lighter and they don’t have air ride suspensions. They are great motor homes, but they’re just not quite as heavy as a diesel motor home. My point is if someone has been in one of those and they upgrade to a diesel they’re thinking OK that really helped me with that gas unit, they can tell a huge difference in the handling improvements from the gas unit and they just forget all the about the safety when they get the diesel because it drives like a Lincoln Town Car. This is when I always remind people, this is Safe-T-Plus. The safety part is the primary reason this unit exists. It is to help you if you do have a steer tire blowout.” – David Leake, Safe T Plus

The Company

David also talks about the history of the company, R&D complexities, and how much he enjoys working with a company that only has less than half a percent of product returns. The company is also very customer satisfaction-driven. They even offer custom brackets for one-off RV units.

Ep. 79 Driver’s Edition – Temp Stick, NJ Parking, Ember RV, & Winnebago02 Sep 202100:56:16

Temp Stick – New Sponsor

We recently interviewed Jason Miller CEO of Temp Stick. Jason was so impressed with how the interview came out and our knowledge of RVing that he would like Temp Stick to be a new sponsor of the show. We hope you will welcome Temp Stick to the Beyond The Wheel family by visiting their website. If you purchase anything while there be sure to let them know you heard of them through us. I have been using Temp Stick for over three years and Sean just picked one up to protect his dog, Toby.

Temp Sick is going to sponsor every episode until the rest of the year along with our long-time sponsors Battle Born Batteries.

Personal Safety

We wanted to take a moment to reflect on personal safety, Sean and I talk often about safety products and how they can help your RV, but I wanted to comment on your safety. I feel like there has been an increase in stories of people being attacked or killed while camping/RVing. Sean and I share some stories from our travels and situations where we felt it necessary to change locations.

New Ordinance to allow RV Day Parking In Seaside Heights

Seaside Heights NJ officials last week introduced an ordinance that would allow recreational vehicles, better known by their acronym RVs, to park in the borough for the day as officials plan to make the town more RV-friendly.

Under the ordinance, RVs would be allowed to utilize the borough’s municipally-owned but commercially operated lots to park their vehicles. The ordinance would limit RV parking to the hours of 8 a.m. to midnight and would prohibit overnight parking and other ancillary activities. Currently, RV parking is banned.

“These people come from all over the place to our beautiful town and they cannot have a recreational vehicle parked anywhere in Seaside Heights,” said Councilman Harry Smith

Smith said the plan, as envisioned by officials, would be to create a more formal RV parking area within the bayside parking lot near the entrance to the town from Route 37. It would have the proper equipment and would allow an RV contingent to stay together.

“People come down here and we tell them, ‘you can’t park anywhere,’” said Mayor Anthony Vaz. “If we give them an area, they will enjoy that. They can walk to the boardwalk and they won’t need to park a car.”

“The permission of parking does not permit idling, running a generator, and certainly not occupying additional space for grilling,” said Borough Attorney Jean Cipriani. “This ordinance only permits parking – it would not permit any of these additional activities.”

New RV Manufacturer in Indiana

Northern Indiana is adding another recreational vehicle maker to what is known as the “RV Capital of the World.” Ember Recreational Vehicles announced it will invest $4 million to build a facility in Elkhart County.

RV manufacturers in the Hoosier State make 80 percent of the RVs in the country, contributing more than $32 billion to the state’s economy annually.

Ember President and CEO Ashley Bontrager Lehman comes from a family that founded a major RV manufacturer. She said in a statement northern Indiana is the perfect location with the large industry presence already. Company officials said they believe it can be competitive with other manufacturers.

Ember will produce lightweight travel trailers.

Winnebago Moves Corporate Headquarters to Minnesota

Spokesperson Chad Reece said the company expects to continue producing vehicles in northern Iowa, where Winnebago employs about 2,100 workers in Charles City, Forest City, Lake Mills, and Waverly. Reece said company leaders only wanted to change the address “to align with where the executive offices are.”

Ep. 78 GasStop USA19 Aug 202100:44:51

About GasStop

Does your RV use propane? If so, you will want to check out today’s episode with Mike Ray from GasStop USA. GasStop is the only emergency 100% shut-off safety device for bottled and portable propane systems. In the event of a major leak, GasStop will instantly and automatically shut off the flow of gas.

GasStop is designed for RV propane bottles and fixed tanks. While talking to Mike it reminded Kenny of his days in school training to become an RV inspector. He learned that propane can be very safe when used properly and well maintained.

Don’t Fuel the Fire – Use a GasStop

GasStop not only prevents your propane tank from becoming an almost endless supply of fuel for a fire, but it allows you to do a quick Propane leak test on your RV. A 30-minute propane check can be done in two minutes. Originally designed in Europe, Mike tells us about bringing GasStop to the U.S., and the quality testing involved.

“We really wanted a 3rd party to beat on the product to make sure that it does everything it is supposed to and that it’s super safe. That was obviously for the UL, they put it through a one-year process making sure it operated every time, shutting off the flow of propane. It has a five-year warranty and they wanted to ensure that you know that a five-year warranty has actual quality behind it. So, to answer your question to bring something into the US is not that difficult the challenge was in the testing and being sure it was a quality product and super safe.” Mike Ray – Gas Stop USA

A Key Feature of GasStop

Another feature of the Gasstop is that it has a built-in gauge. Often times gauges on a propane tank that is on a Class A motor home are difficult to read, the gauge on the GasStop is going to be front and center making it very easy to read.

If you want to find out more about GasStop check out their website or if you would like to check out user reviews, visit Techno RV

Ep. 77 Harvest Hosts Acquires Boondockers Welcome05 Aug 202100:41:37

Harvest Hosts Acquisition of Boondockers Welcome

In today’s episode, we welcome back Joel Holland, CEO of Harvest Hosts, and now Boondockers Welcome. He was previously on episode 31. Joel tells us how and why he purchased BoonDockers Welcome and what it means for existing customers from both platforms. Joel also talks about the growth of both companies and how he will continue to keep that growth going.

We’ve added about 25 full-time employees just in the last couple of months, and many of them are focused on host recruitment. To continue to succeed, we need to have a really robust network of host locations because getting into campgrounds is hard and frustrating. To me, RVing is a spontaneous activity, you wake up, and whatever your feelings are for that day, you go with it. Now it’s a little bit tough to do because you have to call ahead and make plans. We’re trying to increase these locations that people can stay at, so we will keep hiring and keep focusing on recruiting heavily.”

We appreciate how candidly Joel talks with us and is completely transparent when talking about why some acquisitions do not go well and how this differs from most, making it a perfect addition to Harvest Hosts. Joel even goes into detail when it comes to marketing and advertising. Joel has great business insight, and we absolutely appreciate him taking the time to come back on the show. We encourage you to check Harvest Hosts and Boondockers Welcome for some truly unique camping opportunities if you haven’t already.

We hope you enjoy this episode and ask if you could leave a rating or review. This helps the show reach a larger audience.

Ep. 76 Spartan Power22 Jul 202101:05:28

Spartan Power

Are you looking to upgrade the power system in your RV? Don’t forget your cables! Today we have Steve Kjeldgaard from Spartan Power. Steve tells us the secret behind how they make their Spartan Power cables so flexible.

“Regardless of what cable you go with, I believe that even when you get up to four gauge wire, our cables are really flexible because of the copper strands. We don’t use thick copper strands. We are actually using 30 gauge copper strands. In a small cable, the size of a number 2 pencil, you’re actually seeing close to about 420 copper strands inside. In our 4 gauge cables, you’re going to see closer to 2100 strands, and that’s actual individual copper strands. That will be more flexible because they’re just that much smaller and allow that bend where some of the other cables with thicker copper inside just won’t give you that.” – Steve Kjeldgaard, Spartan Power.

Kenny has Spartan Power cables in his RV, and their flexibility, as he says, is similar to a Twizzler. That’s even with the cable being a heavy gauge. Steve really lays out a lot of helpful information in this episode, including the difference between AC and DC power and why some cables need to be larger than others. We also talk about some of Spartan Cable’s other services, such as inverters, power monitors, batteries, and more. Spartan Power can help you construct a custom off-grid system for your RV. They can make custom cables that will fit your requirements, and their cables come with a lifetime crimp guarantee.

Customer Service

Customer service is a top priority to Steve and Spartan Power. As you will hear, Steve will take the time to help a customer, whether that be a $5 sale or $10k sale. He believes every customer is important and wants to be sure they are satisfied.

“It’s the same every time I pick up the phone whether it’s a 5 minute $5 sale or an hour-long $10,000 sale or swap that. I’ve had an hour-long $5 sale, and I’ve had a 5 minute $10000 sale. Regardless of what I pick up, we’re going to spend the time we need to talk to you and make sure that the answers you are looking for are presented in a way you actually understand. I’ve had many folks that say, “you’re the 3rd person I’ve talked to, and I finally actually understand, and I don’t feel like I have to go do more research,” and that’s just because we’re willing to take the time”- Steve Kjeldgaard Spartan Power.

If you are looking to upgrade the cables, inverter, or solar setup in your RV, check out Spartan Power.

We hope you enjoy this episode and ask if you could leave a rating or review. This helps the show’s ranking and allows it to reach a larger audience.

Ep. 75 Independence Day Driver’s Edition08 Jul 202100:55:20

On this episode of Beyond The Wheel Podcast Drivers Edition, Kenny and Sean sit down to chat about RV news.

KOA to build a campground at a Loves

Kampgrounds of America Inc. (KOA) announced that it has signed a franchise agreement with Love’s Travel Stops to build a new KOA campground at the Love’s location in McComb, Mississippi.

Senior Director of Franchise Development Larry Brownfield said the campground will be a KOA Journey, currently only in the development stage. It will have all of the services and amenities required of other Journey parks in the KOA system.

North American recreational vehicle shipments surge in Q1

The US recreational vehicle industry continued its pandemic-driven boom in the first quarter of 2021, underscoring the lingering impact of the health and economic crisis on American consumer buying and leisure-time habits. (From Reuters)

Kenny and Sean share their thoughts on why the industry continues to boom even when COVID-19 cases are coming down.

Harvest Hosts Acquires Boondockers Welcome

Boondockers Welcome and Harvest Hosts will continue to operate independently, with separate membership plans. Travelers can choose to be members of one or both programs, and existing rates will remain unchanged. In the coming months, the companies will merge, allowing the company to invest in more product features and functions that enhance the experience for guests and hosts of both programs.

We had Joel Holland, CEO of Harvest Host, on episode 31 of Beyond the Wheel. He seems like a great guy, and we wish him continued success with the addition of Boondockers Welcome.

Theft of Catalytic converters

There has been a surge of catalytic converter thefts across the country, and several RVs have been targeted. We are guessing that the ample ground clearance combined with the size and weight of an RV catalytic converter makes for an excellent score for thieves.

New Ford F53 Chassis Recall

Safety Risk: In the event of the rear axle or Driveshaft failure, customers may experience loss of vehicle motive power, loss of transmission park function, and loss of parking brake function, increasing the risk of a crash.

The Safety recall is for their new F53 chassis, which came out late 2019 and includes all gas Class A RVs. The recall number is 21S17. If you believe your chassis is part of this recall, contact Ford to find out for sure. Have your VIN ready so they can look up your particular chassis.

Winnebago Grand National Rally

If you are planning on attending this year’s GNR, be sure to let us know and meet Kenny while you are there. He will be glad to meet up and chat about all things RVing. He will also have some Beyond The Wheel Stickers to hand out.

We hope you enjoy this episode and ask if you could leave a rating or review. This helps the show’s ranking and allows it to reach a larger audience.

Ep. 74 Temp Stick24 Jun 202100:55:20

Temp Stick

Do you travel with pets? If so, you should have a way to monitor and be alerted of temperature spikes in your RV while away? Jason Miller, CEO of Temp Stick, joins us to discuss how a product created to monitor wine cellars and food applications turned into a top-rated tool for RVers to protect their pets when left alone.

Temp Stick monitors temperature and humidity and can alert you through email and text when temperatures fall out of your set parameters. Jason shares how the product has gone through several revisions and about the build construction, including using a commercial strength antenna. On top of monitoring and alerting you, Temp Stick can store data that you can retrieve even years later. We also ask Jason the critical question of why they decided not to charge a monthly fee for the service. That’s right, you only purchase the Temp Stick once, and you get the service for free.

“There are no fees. There are no subscriptions, and boy, doesn’t that make it a beautiful product. You can have monitoring 24/7, and you don’t need to subscribe to anything” – Jason Miller, CEO of Temp Stick.

Temp Stick Warranty Policy

Jason talks about the gentle, loving warranty and why they are not the norm for warranty claims.

“I’m a consumer just like you or just like the guy that goes out and buys something, and I can tell you we’re not the norm. We have this gentle, loving warranty approach to everything. We want to fix what is wrong. Maybe it’s just in our DNA, but we know that if it’s the best product, the rest will take care of itself.” – Jason Miller, CEO of Temp Stick.

As you will hear in the interview, Kenny has been using Temp Stick for over three years to monitor his RV and has never had an issue with the device or service. You can learn more about them here.

We hope you enjoy this episode and ask if you could leave a rating or review. This helps the show get ranked and allows it to reach a larger audience.

Ep. 73 Care Camps10 Jun 202100:32:30

Care Camps

Today’s episode could be our most important episode yet! We have Jennifer Mercer, Director of Development for Care Camps, joining us to tell us all about the wonderful things they do for children with cancer. The organization was founded 36 years ago by a small group of KOA campground owners. They wanted to help children with cancer go camping, forget about their problems for a while, and focus on being kids. The foundation was recognized by KOA corporate, which is now the most prominent supporter of the charity.

“Because of KOA, when you donate to care camps, 100% of your donation goes directly to helping a child with cancer to send them to camp.” – Jennifer Mercer, Director of Development.

You don’t have to be as big as KOA to help. There are several ways to help send kids to camp even without spending any money. Of course, donations always help, and you can see all the different ways to donate here.

Jennifer shares the difference between a standard campground and a Care Camp campground and how much it costs to send a child with cancer to camp for a week. Because of generous donations, they can send 42,000 kids to camp a year.

“Parents talk about sending a patient to camp and their child back”-Jennifer Mercer, Director of Development.

Care Camps and COVID

She also tells us how Covid-19 was challenging for the kids. Because of the shutdown, they were not able to go camping. Luckily, they pulled together and came up with a way to bring camp to the kids, with an idea called camp in a box. They would send a camp kit in a large box through mail to the children. This way, whether kids were in a hospital or at home, they could experience the fun of camp anywhere.

If you have a child with cancer or know someone who does and would like them to go to Care Camps, reach out to Jennifer.

We hope you enjoyed this episode and found it as heartwarming as we did. Kenny and Sean plan on doing some fundraisers in the future so be sure to look out for that. In the meanwhile, we hope that you will visit Care Camps and learn more about this fantastic foundation.

Ep. 72 CampgroundViews.com27 May 202100:48:12

CampgroundViews.com

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could do a walk-through tour of a campground online before you booked? Now you can. Mark Koep, founder and CEO of CampgroundViews.com tells us how it was created. As an RVer himself, Marc wished there was a Google street view for campgrounds. Something that would let him navigate virtually through a campground with 360-degree views and see what the campground and each site looked like instead of relying on online reviews. Since nothing out there like this existed, he would make it happen.

CampgroundViews.com allows you to not only tour a campground but look at each individual site. This information can be so helpful as an RVer because you will actually be able to tell if your RV will fit? Will there be room for your slide-outs? Space for your pet? CampgroundViews.com will also allow you to get information on that site and book the site directly, right there and then. Marc shares what this took, how they capture the footage, revenue, challenges, and what the future holds for the company.

“The single biggest problem for campers is where to camp, so we sought to solve that issue, and that is where CampgroundViews.com was born out of to help people actually find places to camp. The problem looking for campgrounds is that reviews are in text format. It is difficult to interpret the reviews to decide if you agree or disagree. Our system is going to let you virtually tour the campground and sites and then click on the site to book it.” – Marck Koep, Founder and CEO of CampgroundViews.com.

Ep. 70 PetHub29 Apr 202100:59:00

PetHub

Do you travel with Pets? Then this is an episode you are going to enjoy. Lorien Clemens, the COO of PetHub, joins us today to talk about the many advantages and features of their pet identification tags and services. PetHub tags are ID tags that can be scanned by smartphones to receive information about your pet. Because all of the information is stored online, it can easily be updated as you travel from location to location. The other significant advantage of having the information online is you can create very detailed pet profiles. When someone scans your pet’s tag, they get to know the pet’s name, contact info, pet’s behavior, special medical needs, and so much more.

Lorien walks us through the company’s beginnings, how the idea came about and what it took to get it to the market. She also shares some astounding facts about how many pets go missing each year and how PetHub services can help reunite families with their pets even when a tag goes missing.

PetHub Services

PetHub offers two levels of service plans. One is their basic, which is free. The other is their premium service which is $24 a year. Lorien explains the difference between the two plans. We are very impressed with what each one offers. We also thought it was great that they even have a free option. That shows how much the company cares about lost pet recovery and how to help those pets in need. We really enjoyed hearing the passion in Lorien’s voice about the company and the pets they help. It is no wonder their core values are to protect, share, and nurture.

“We believe that protection is super important, and we take it very seriously. We hope that you find us reliable and trustworthy, but at the end of the day, we’re in this because we love our pets. They bring a level of joy to our lives. We hope we can bring that level of joy when they come to PetHub.”- Lorien Clemens, COO PetHub.

Ep. 69 Roadmaster Active Suspension15 Apr 202100:49:04

Roadmaster Active Suspension

Today, Nolan Mast from Roadmaster Active Suspension joins us. Nolan tells us about the history of RoadMaster Active Suspension and how it was an idea that came about while driving on the rough roads of South Africa. The system adds strength and stability to your vehicle at all times. Once installed, there is no need to make any adjustments. Nolan also talks about how the system has changed throughout the years and how they have made each generation easier to install, making the product great for DIYers. We enjoyed learning about the company’s R&D and how they are always keeping an eye on the ever-changing automotive industry. It is perfect for RVers looking to add stability while towing travel trailers and 5th  wheels without harming ride quality.

The reason people love our product and what sets us apart is that the system is working for you even unloaded, meaning you can enjoy the benefits of the system even when not towing. Most people only tow 10% of the time, so the upgrade you are putting on for that 10% usually requires maintenance or adjustments when switching from towing and not towing, and that is where our strength is you set our system up once and never mess with it again.” – Nolan Mast Roadmaster Active Suspension

Ep. 68 TDS Ladders01 Apr 202100:47:30

TDS Ladders and Little Giant

What does it mean to be a factory-direct store? Today we find out as we sit down with Tony Davis, owner of TDS Ladders. Tony tells us the history of TDS Ladders and how they became a factory direct store for Little Giant Ladders. He also explains the many advantages of buying from TDS Ladder and how Covid drastically changed its business plan from being a mostly roadshow seller to opening a store and selling online. Tony also lets us know all about Little Giant Ladders and why Little Giant is perfect for RVers, especially the new Epic Little Giant Ladder.

Kenny has owned a Little Giant Ladder for over 4 years and absolutely loves it. It is light, compact for storage, and versatile when in use. Kenny’s Little Giant still looks and works like new today even after a lot of use. Tony was nice enough to extend a $100 discount code for our listeners. So, if you have been looking for a ladder, check out TDS Ladder and use the discount code RV100 on the Little Giant Epic Ladder plus bundle set during checkout on their website.

Izonus Road Safety

Tony also introduces a new product from a company called Izonus. This is an emergency roadside illumination system that can be set up quickly and is reusable. These pro series lights can be set up to illuminate the vehicle that is pulled over in an emergency situation and alert travelers on the road to approach with caution by displaying flashing red or amber lights. A highway patrol officer created this because of a need to replace road flares that are one-time use. Pro Series lights are among the brightest, portable, electronic road flares on the market. The Pro Series lights provide better lighting, functionality, and better protection than other portable LED products on the market.

If you would like to find out more about TDS Ladder, check out their website here, and remember to use the discount code RV100 during checkout for $100 off the Little Giant Ladder Epic bundle.

Ep. 67 Driver’s Edition – New Battle Born Batteries, Internet, Towing Capacity, and Tires18 Mar 202100:55:39

5G or Starlink for RVers

5G service can deliver up to 20 Gigabits-per-second (Gbps) peak data rates and 100+ Megabits-per-second (Mbps). This new interface, which uses a millimeter-wave spectrum, enables more devices within the same geographic area; 4G can support about 4,000 devices per square kilometer, whereas 5G will support around one million.  The shorter wavelength means 5G can carry a lot of data much faster than 4G, but it also means a much shorter range. 4G wavelengths have a range of about 10 miles. 5G wavelengths have a range of about 1,000 feet, not even 2% of 4G’s range.

We think we’re a little ways down the road before 5G is widespread enough for RV use, but we think maybe StarLink could be the answer for fast, dependable internet while on the road and in a shorter time period. SpaceX is working on an antenna that will connect vehicles like semi-trucks and RVs to its satellite internet network. Elon Musk says the antenna will not be for “connecting Tesla cars to Starlink,” saying that the user “terminal is much too big.”

Starlink is the company’s capital-intensive project to build an interconnected internet network with thousands of satellites, known in the space industry as a constellation, designed to deliver high-speed internet to consumers anywhere on the planet. Kenny and Sean do not believe this is something we see for the general public this year, but hopefully, this will become a reality for us very soon, with Beta testers already out on the road now.

Battle Born Batteries Game Changer

Dragonfly Energy introduced two new battery models for its consumer line, Battle Born Batteries: the BB8D and the BBGC3. They are both 12V 270 Ah deep cycle batteries with different form factors that use the same reliable LiFePO4 technology as our other batteries.

The BB8D is 21.29 inches L x 11.59 inches W x 10.01 inches H weighs 75 pounds.

The BBGC3 is 22.83 inches L x 7.09 inches W x 13.15 inches H and weighs 75 pounds.

Here are the dimensions of their 100amp batteries for comparison: 12.75L × 6.87W × 8.95H in and weigh 31lbs.

Battle Born Batteries Auction for Charity

Battle Born Batteries, connected with Care Camps, a non-profit organization that hosts specialized camps for children with cancer. They are currently holding a charity auction event, where they are selling open box components on our fundraising page.

Starting on March 15th at 9 am PST, the sale of open box components will take place on the company’s Greater Giving auction page. These items are open box components that were used by their engineering department and will be sold as-is. The auction will end on Friday, March 19th at 5 pm PST, at the link here: http://www.battlebornauctionforcarecamps.com/ .

Tow Rating and Cargo Capacity

Figuring out how much a truck can tow is a complicated process. If you are towing with your truck, especially travel trailers and fifth wheels, you need to know your towing weight to ensure you are as safe as possible. Sean recently made a very comprehensive video on how to know you are within spec while towing. He explains the differences in many of the terms manufacturers use when describing vehicles’ weights in different scenarios. We also talk about the importance of tire ratings when it comes to towing and cargo capacity.

TDS Ladder & Discount code for Little Giant Epic Ladder

Our next episode is with TDS Ladder. Chris Procopio is the owner of the company, and TDS Ladder is a factory-direct store for Little Giant. We learned what it means to be a factory-direct store and how that all came to be. It is a fascinating story. As a thank you, Chris is offering a $100 discount on the new Little Giant ladder starting April 1st. Use discount code RV100, but remember this code will not work until April 1stand ends at the end of April.

Ep. 66 Winnebago Factory Service Center04 Mar 202100:40:00

Winnebago Factory Service Center

Winnebago Factory Service Center General Manager Tom Olsen joined us to talk about the history of the service center and all of the benefits of having service done on your Winnebago RV there. Two of the main benefits are access to parts and their trained technicians.

Our technicians are homegrown. Many of them have come from our manufacturing center, so they are familiar with the coaches’ construction. Hence, they have that experience before they even walk in the door here at the service center. We have access to our parts. Manufacturing our parts makes it easier to get them, our turnaround time is much quicker. We have excellent working relationships with all of our suppliers. If a customer comes in last minute needing something, we have a good opportunity to meet their needs.” – Tom Olsen, Winnebago Service Center General Manager.

We learned from Tom that Winnebago can do a complete refresh on your older RV and bring it up to today’s comfort and design. We were surprised to hear how much the service center works with production, identifying potential design flaws based on repairs seen in the shop. Tom goes into detail about the extensive steps Winnebago is taking to ensure everyone stays safe during Covid-19. Not only customers but also the staff.

Ep. 65 Weigh Safe18 Feb 202100:59:00

Weigh Safe

Do you tow a travel trailer, 5th wheel, or maybe even livestock? Would you like to increase your confidence while towing or improve your overall towing experience? Then you will enjoy today’s episode with Chris Procopio from Weigh Safe. What advantage do Weigh Safe hitches have over the competition? Weigh-Safe is the only hitch to provide a built-in hydraulic scale allowing you to measure tongue weight.

The importance of our built-in hydraulic scale is that it measures tongue weight and lets you know that you have enough weight on the front of your trailer. We want to eliminate trailer sway and jackknifing. These two are the leading causes of towing-related fatalities in the U.S. We developed this gauge so that the average person can come up, look at their ball mount, see how much tongue weight is placed on their truck, and then adust the trailer load accordingly.” – Chris Procopio, Weigh Safe Director of Sales

Chris walks us through the many types of hitches they build, including their weight distribution hitch, which is the only weight distribution hitch that can truly distribute your trailer weight. He also introduces their all-new 5th wheel hitch. This 5th wheel hitch will weigh much less than traditional hitches and include the same built-in hydraulic scale, allowing you to measure pin weight.

We enjoyed learning more about the history of Weigh Safe and all of its products. If you would like to learn more about Weigh Safe and what they have to offer, check them out here. They have several helpful videos and plenty of information on towing safety.

Ep. 63 Driver’s Edition KOA Special Report Camping & COVID-1921 Jan 202100:55:32

KOA National Camping Report

KOA published an interim National Camping Report that was focused on issues surrounding camping and COVID-19. The information for the report was gathered by a third party market research company at the end of April 2020. We thought it would be interesting to look at the report and compare it to what we have seen during our camping throughout this pandemic.

2020 Travel Plans

When asked about their travel plans for the remainder of 2020, 41% of campers say they still plan to take their planned camping trips, 31% have canceled and 13% will postpone.

Barriers to Camping

Campers cite work status (33%) and finances (26%) as the top barriers to camping, or to camp more, once restrictions are lifted.

COVID-19 is driving new interest in camping and may bring new campers to the market. 46% of the people surveyed said they are looking forward to getting out and enjoying the great outdoors, especially after being home for so long. A close second, at 41%, was because it is an affordable way to travel.

Returning to Camping After COVID-19

How people will return to camping? Campers say they will return to camping with fewer people in their group, camp closer to home, and potentially less crowded destinations.

Reasons for Increased Interest in RVing

With concerns over the safety of communal facilities spiking from COVID-19, the importance of having a private bathroom in a cabin or RV is now very important to campers (63% of current campers and 44% of prospective campers). Half of campers and prospective campers say that the availability of private bathrooms in a cabin or RV will influence where they stay.

Safe Outdoor Recreation

Nine out of ten travelers (and 95% of campers) feel that it is reasonable to have measures in place to limit contact. When asked which measures they felt are reasonable, nearly half of campers (47%), as well as nearly half of leisure travelers overall, agree that limiting the number of people on a trail is reasonable.

An independent market research firm, Cairn Consulting Group, conducted the research.

Update on Kenny’s Cheap Handling Fix

On our last episode of Drivers Edition, we talked about Kenny making adjustments to the sway bars in his Motorhome. The results are in as to if it was worth it or not. Performing the front sway bar adjustment was great, but he put the rear sway bar back to stock. If you would like to see the process, check out his YouTube Channel

Kenny Installed a Dash Cam in His Motorhome

Kenny installed an Anker (Brand) Roav (model) dashcam that has collision and park sensors. He is running a 10ft USB cord from the dashcam to one of his outlets on the dashboard. This allows it to be on at all times, even while parked. He put a 128G mini SD card and it will record around 12 hours before recording over itself.

Sean shares his maintenance tips for RV storage

Most people think you just winterize and leave the RV alone until it’s time to take it back out again. This really is not the case as you will find out. Sean explains his winter maintenance storage tips. You can watch Sean’s video by subscribing to his YouTube channel.

Ep. 62 AirSkirts Inflatable RV Skirting07 Jan 202100:35:59

AirSkirts

We love when we hear about new companies and products introduced to the RV industry and when fellow RVers create them, that’s even better. Today Jim Phelan, the founder of AirSkirts, joins us. Jim is a Full-time RVer who wanted to improve the way skirting goes around an RV, not only with the install process but also with the skirt’s overall performance. Jim talks about how he took the idea he created for himself and turned it into a business. AirSkirts are inflatable, set up in minutes, and removed just as quickly. They are perfect for people on the go.

“This is a product that I am passionate about and that I believe in. I made it for myself. I made it for a reason. It’s a dream come true! It’s so much fun, whether we are talking with customers who just received their kit or packing up boxes it has been a lot of fun” – Jim Phelan Founder and CEO of AirSkirts

AirSkirts stand out from any other skirt designed to go around an RV. It easily sets up around your RV, providing an insulated barrier from the outside temperature and wind. There is no drilling or customization needed on your RV. The PVC canvas construction is built to last and comes with a 5-year warranty.

AirSkirts are designed for travel trailers, 5th wheels, and motorized RV’s. With their built-in pressure release valves, there is no need to worry about over-inflating.

Ep. 61 CLEAR2O Water Filtration24 Dec 202000:45:40

CLEAR2O

You may remember our interview with Keith Bernard, CEO of CLEAR2O. Keith came on the show last year to talk about their DIRTGUARD sediment pre-filter. We were both so impressed by Keith and what he had to say about the DIRTGUARD that they each bought one. Keith returns today to talk about their new product, CLEAR2O Personal Water Filter. The Personal Water Filter will allow you to drink directly from open water sources, such as streams or lakes, by removing bacteria and parasites, preventing waterborne disease. The personal water filter is a two-stage water filtration system. The 1st stage will reduce bacteria at the 0.1 micron level. The 2nd Stage eliminates unpleasant taste and odors.

Keith also shares the process of making a product from an idea to getting it on the shelves. We discuss the impact of Covid-19 on changes the marketing tools they use to get the word out about new products. Keith believes that some of these changes will become permanent fixes in communicating with their customers.

“The things we have put in place are really to communicate with our customers. We are a small business. We live on the success of our customers. When they are successful, we are successful” – Keith Bernard CEO CLEAR2O

Ep. 60 H3R Performance10 Dec 202000:51:53

H3R Performance

Hey everyone! Chris Dieter from H3R Performance joins us today to talk about their line of fire extinguishers, Halgaurd and Max Out. He also shares a lot of knowledge of extinguishers, such as the different types, ratings, maintenance, the differences in discharge time, and their extinguishers’ construction. Chris also talks about the importance of having a fire extinguisher that is UL listed.

Having a UL rating is hard to overemphasize because UL is a well-known standard for fire protection. There are UL standards for the different types of agents. They put the extinguishers through very rigorous testing, which is very expensive for manufacturing. Still, when you come out of these tests, you know that you will have a fire extinguisher that is of high quality and will work when you need it to work. Some states do not even allow the sale of extinguishers without the UL rating.” – Chris Dieter, Senior VP, H3R Performance

Chris also talks about the history of H3R performance, including how it went from focusing on halon recycling just for aviation purposes to branching out and creating a quality extinguisher for the general public and automotive enthusiasts.

To learn more about H3R Performance and their products check them out here.

Ep. 59 Thanksgiving Driver’s Edition26 Nov 202000:49:13

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone, and welcome to Beyond The Wheel Driver’s Edition!

Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals

Some of our favorite RV companies will be participating in Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. Battle Born Batteries will have their first Black Friday sale and will also run a Cyber Monday special. They will also keep the phone lines open over the weekend to handle the sales and questions. Micro Air is running a Cyber Monday special on their popular Easy Start 364 & their new Easy Touch RV Thermostat. Our friends over at Techno RV have already started their Black Friday sale. We love these companies and what they are doing for the RV industry, so we hope you will check them out.

Winnebago RV’s first virtual launch

The Ekko is an AWD van with features like a full bath, large water tanks, a garage, and many more features not typically found in a van size RV. The new Journey is a Class A diesel pusher that sits on an all-new chassis with many characteristics of a bus, like a lowered chassis with large cargo bays and side mirrors that are up and out of the way.

Newmar also had some big news with a diesel Class A with a Twist

This Class A diesel has the engine up front instead of the rear, allowing them to turn this new Canyon Star into a Class A Toy Hauler.

Kenny’s Cheap Handling Fix

This is a simple adjustment that can be done to the sway bar of a gas Class A Ford Chassis. The adjustment takes about 35 minutes to perform but makes a world of difference in the handling of the RV. It basically takes the roll off the RV while cornering and while parked at a campground and setup. Kenny wishes he did this adjustment years ago. He also did the rear sway bar and talks about why in the episode.

News of Vaccine Slows Projected RV sales

There is talk Investors are backing away from some outdoor camping, recreational vehicle, and boating stocks after Pfizer announced 90% efficacy with its COVID-19 vaccine. This does kind of make sense if Covid-19 caused a spike in sales, then a possible cure would start to flatline that spike.

Take care everyone, Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels!

She shares insights on the business’s mobile RV repair services, the importance of regular maintenance, and the challenges of working with extended warranties. The podcast also explores the Coachella Valley’s growth, its impact on the RV repair industry, and the company’s expansion plans. Additionally, Sherry discusses the increasing popularity of camper vans and expresses her gratitude for being part of the RV community.

The company receives a large part of its business from its mobile repair and maintenance ability. Sherry had this to say about what they can offer through that mobile repair option.

“The main thing we do on-site is oil changes. We can actually do oil changes, transmission service, generator service, air filters, and all that on-site. We can do some repairs on-site. If they can’t move the coach, we’ll come out and do stuff. We’ve changed radiators on site. We try to accommodate when we can.” – Sherry Huff, Co-Founder of Thermal Truck and RV.

Ep. 58 TAXA Outdoors12 Nov 202001:11:26

TAXA Outdoors

TAXA Outdoors creates mobile human habitats. Today, we have the CEO and Founder, Garrett Finney. Maybe you have seen one of their habitats, the Cricket or Mantis, out and about. Actually, maybe way out and about! These habitats are designed with the adventurer in mind.

Garrett discusses his design process, how they decide what features to include in their habitats, like wireless electric brakes, and how working with NASA inspired his habitat designs. He also takes us back to the early days of starting the company from building just a single prototype unit to where the company is today. Garrett has a unique way of looking at his habitats. He considers them similar to a good pair of jeans where they wear in and not wear out.

In general, our products are a family, the Mantis being the biggest made for two adults and two teenagers, a Cricket is made for two adults, and two kids and a Tiger Moth is made for two adults. We try to put the stuff that a camping adventurer would need and not a house on wheels. – Garrett Finney

Ep. 57 RVnGO29 Oct 202000:49:41

About RVnGO

We love it when guests come back on the show to give us updates, especially with everything happening in the last year. Paul Kacir, founder and CEO of RVnGO, talks to us about the sudden boom in RV rentals as well as some of their new exciting partnerships. RVnGO has really streamlined the RV rental process for both the renter and the rentee. If you own an RV and would like to start making some income from it or are thinking of getting into RVing, you will definitely want to listen and hear why now is the time and just how easy it is to get started with RVnGO.

The other very unique product that RVnGO has created is a proprietary insurance policy that covers both parties.

One of the biggest barriers for entry before was that you needed commercial RV rental insurance. It is expensive. You had to pay monthly for it whether you were renting out your RV that month or not. What we did was create a variable insurance product. You only pay the insurance on a nightly basis. If you are not renting it you are not paying any premiums. That lets individuals come in and do it casually and allows fleets to become more profitable.”

-Paul Kacir Founder & CEO RVnGO

RVnGO supplied us with some helpful charts that show how great the demand for RV rentals can be. An RV owner can use these spikes to their advantage when renting out their RV.

Ep. 56 Grand Design RVs15 Oct 202000:43:25

Grand Design RVs

Grand Design RV is a name that everyone knows, but did you know the company is under 10 years old? It is hard to believe that an RV manufacturer that is so young can be so recognizable. That is what happens when you are one of the fastest-growing RV companies in the industry. We believe their success has been achieved by doing things the right way.

We talk with Tommy Hall, Marketing Director of Grand Design RV, and discuss what sets them apart from other manufacturers. Is it their pre-delivery inspection (PDI) where every RV goes through a 200 point inspection? Could it be the follow-up with owners to find out what they can do better? Maybe it is their educational videos and blogs that they provide to owners on operating their new RV? Or, is it a combination of all of these things adding up to one great advantage? Tommy also goes through the history of Grand Design and lets us know what some of the challenges of rapid growth.

Everybody always hears about the product, but I think more than that, I think Grand Design is a great place to work and we have a lot of good people and people that support each other. Especially in times like we have seen these last few months, it’s nice to work for a place that appreciates everybody. – Tommy Hall Marketing Director Grand Design RV

Driver’s Edition: New In The World Of RVing Will Canadian snowbirds be allowed entry in US campgrounds this year?

Canada’s National Private Campground Association estimates that there are between 50,000 – 200,000 Canadian Snowbirds who travel in an RV or stay seasonally during the spring to fall months at Canadian private or Government-owned campgrounds but live in the U.S. during winter months. However, the majority of private campgrounds in Canada (outside of British Columbia) are seasonal businesses. Also, these campgrounds were not designed, nor are they capable, of operating water and septic infrastructure/essential services without risking permanent damage to the components in extremely cold weather.

As a potential solution, CCRVC is partnering with the Hotel Association of Canada to offer discounted daily and longer-term accommodations to Canadian snowbirds who may not have any other options available to them. Another alternative could be opening the US/Canada border one-way for Canadians to travel to the U.S., but not for U.S. travel into Canada. The Canadian RV and camping industry is committed to serving a crucial role to help combat the public health emergency the pandemic presents and is ready and willing and able to be an important resource.

Living Vehicle unveiled its luxury new travel trailer RV with a convertible home office.

The trailer comes in three different models ranging from $229,995 to $369,995, but the only difference between the three is the power systems. The luxury home on wheels can optionally come with a home office set up that transforms the bedroom into a workspace for digital nomads or people working remotely amid the pandemic. The Core, Max, and Pro are all powered by Volta Power Systems’ lithium-ion battery, which also doubles as an electric vehicle charger. The slide system reveals more solar panels. Made with an aluminum exterior and stainless steel components, the 2021 Living Vehicle’s reminds of of an Airstream.

Should locals embrace motorhomes to boost the economy?

This is the title of an article from a Canadian website. It raised the question to us: why wouldn’t you want RVers to visit your community? Then, we saw another article from Gilchrist County (Florida), where residents fight back against the proposed RV Park. There was a local who was quoted saying, “I view this development as a threat to the safety of my family and I spoke about the traffic impact of 1,029 RV’s per day that is going to be added to our roadway directly across from our house. Directly on our roads outside our home. That’s 1,029 more chances for my family to be in a car accident with an RV.” Apparently there is fear that we never knew about having RVers in a community.

We visited some virtual RV show and have to say we really enjoyed them.

Camping World, in particular, did a fantastic job of bringing all of the best parts of an RV show without the crowds. They even did show pricing and giveaways. We watched several days of this particular show and hope this is something that continues in the future even after the pandemic is over.

The new Bronco is coming soon.

Will it be a contender to knock the Jeep Wrangler out as the preferred tow vehicle for RVers? Let us know what you think in the comment section below, Kenny is really looking forward to checking out the Bronco in person next spring as a potential toad vehicle.

Ep. 54 Micro-Air Easy Touch RV Thermostat17 Sep 202000:35:52

Easy Touch RV Thermostat

Do you wish your RV thermostat was similar to the smart thermostats you would find in a modern-day home? On today’s show, Micro-Air’s Roger Krinic tells us all about their new Easy Touch RV Thermostat. With an Easy Touch thermostat, you can control the temperature in your RV from anywhere you have a cell signal. All you need is an app you download on your phone. This means if you are away from the RV exploring a new area and travel with pets, you can rest assured the pets are staying comfy back at the RV. You can even adjust the temperature for them while gone. The Easy Touch is also programmable so you can have your RV at a certain temperature when you wake up it is possible.

Roger tells us what it took to design and build this thermostat. He also tells us some of the challenges in creating thermostats that could work with RV cooling and heating systems.

The concept was to make something that was simple to replace to put in of their existing RV thermostat. It was also to add some additional functionality that the original didn’t come with. Kind of what you would find in your home market like a Nest thermostat. We wanted something that has that functionality in the RV market because you get used to having things like this at home. – Roger Krinic Micro-Air

Ep. 53 RV Toll Pass03 Sep 202000:40:10

RV Toll Pass

Going through a toll booth is about to get a whole lot easier thanks to RV Toll Pass. Most of us have probably experienced the frustration of one transponder working in one state, but not another. Some of us, like Kenny and Sean, carry multiple transponders to cover travels across the country. Well, that will no longer need to be necessary thanks to a system that RV Toll Pass has developed.

Don Brady, Vice President of Business Development, talks about how they were able to create a transponder that works on virtually all U.S. toll roads. The system is easy to use and makes billing very convenient with all tolls on one account. RV Toll Pass is for motorhomes with a toad as well as travel trailers and 5th wheels.

RV Toll Pass is a program that we started out of Albuquerque, it’s based on a transponder that we created that has multiple protocols. There are 5 different types of technology used in the toll roads around the country. This transponder, in one box, allows you to use all of those protocols. Typically, if you are using a toll road, you use one transponder for each agency. So, this is a unique product and we feel like it is a natural product for RVers because they travel across the country and travel between agencies. That is the genesis of RV Toll Pass and it is approved by all of the agencies – Don Brady – Vice President of Business Development

About Surviveware

Today’s episode is all about safety and preparation. If you enjoy hiking, biking, and being in the great outdoors, Janco Bronkhorst, the CEO of Surviveware, has you covered. Janco and his wife, Amanda, created a line of first aid kits designed for the outdoor enthusiast. These first aid kits allow for easy carrying with loops that attach to your belt or Velcro straps for your bike or vehicle. They are very user friendly with an easy to read interior layout, so you know exactly what to grab when you need it.

We took a look at first aid kits that were under $50, and most of them try to stuff a lot in their bags, and when you open them up, it’s a jumbled mess. Think about when you use a toolbox. You have time to look for what you need. In a first aid kit, you need to find what you need immediately and take action. So, we said let’s make a first aid kit that is organized and affordable. -Janco Bronkorst

Also, they created the first durable soft pouch first aid kit that is waterproof. Janco talks about how and why he and Amanda created the company, how they design and test the products, and how they stand out from some of the significant players in first aid like Johnson & Johnson.

Surviveware also produces biodegradable wet wipes. Janco shares the differences between their wipes and baby wipes. Janco is very much very hands-on with the company. He is involved in all the testing and development. He shares how the testing is done for their wipes to ensure they are environmentally friendly.

Garmin has a new RV navigation device geared for the outdoor lifestyle. Garmin’s RV 890 features a large 8-inch touchscreen display that can be viewed in portrait or landscape, and its software has RVers in mind with not only campgrounds and national parks, but with pre-programmed off-grid locations as well.

Furrion announced that they are entering the rooftop A/C market with two new A/C units, one will be a 14.5K BTU and the other 15.5K BTU. Furrion says their A/C units will be able to cool 50% better, run 50% quieter, and use less power than the competition. These are already for sale aftermarket, but please let us know if you spot one on a new RV.

RV sales are up, according to RV News June of 2020 sales are higher than June of 2019, and this appears to be a trend that is going to continue.

Unfortunately, we also have some bad news to share. This year’s Hershey RV show is canceled. We were very disappointed because we were planning on going to show together, and hoped to meet up with some listeners while there. We, of course, understand why it had to be canceled. The show draws enormous crowds, and it would be challenging to practice social distancing while touring RV’s.

We hope you enjoyed this episode and ask if you could leave a rating or review. This helps the show get ranked and allows it to reach a broader audience. Take care everyone, and safe travels!!

Ep. 50 Alliance RV23 Jul 202000:38:22

About Alliance RV

We have a very special episode today. First, this is our 50th episode! Second, we are interviewing Alliance RV, a new RV manufacturer that just started production this year. Coley Brady, our guest, is the Co-Founder of Alliance RV. The company will be focusing on high-end 5th wheels with the full-timer in mind.

Coley has 16 years of experience in the RV industry. He was at Heartland RV since its first year of inception (2004). Quickly rising through the ranks to Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Coley was integral in growing Heartland into one of the largest RV manufacturers in the industry. Coley explains why he and his brother wanted to start their own RV manufacturing company and shares what sets them apart from the competition.

Alliance RV just started production in January 2020, and you can already find their RVs in 110 dealers across the country. They have a unique way of listening to their customers and using that feedback in the production of their RV’s.

The most rewarding part of starting the company is pulling together a great team and working together on a mission to change the game, to be a leader in the industry and creating something from scratch, it’s not easy, it’s a lot of hard work, but it is so rewarding to see it all together. – Coley Brady

We wish them continued success and hope to have them back next year for an update of how the first year went.

Ep. 49 Costa Vista RV Resort by Sun RV09 Jul 202000:39:41

Costa Vista RV Resort

With the increasing interest in camping and RVing right now, we are excited to welcome a new campground, Costa Vista RV Resort. This resort will have a minimum of 246 sites. With us today are Jackie Maguire and Nate Philippsen. Jakie and Nate are vice presidents at Sun RV. They are going to tell us all about the new Costa Vista RV Resort, in Chula Vista, California.

We hear the word “resort” used a lot when describing an RV “park,” but this is one is going to live up to the name. The resort will have amenities like a restaurant, observation deck, indoor/outdoor gym, and sports courts just to name a few. The resort will also feature innovative booking software that will allow you to reserve specific sites. It also allows guests to reserve the spots near amenities they are interested in. The campground will also feature a social media hub where guests will be able to discover what is happening in the resort and surrounding area. So sit back and relax as we find out what it takes to get a campground of this size and amenities together.

“We add amenities based on the area. California is a very active area, so we knew a fitness center would be important to our guests. Weather also plays a large factor in what we put in, and with the ideal temperatures of California, we were able to highlight those outdoor amenities. We also talk to our customers. We let them know that we are building a campground in a certain area and then ask them what amenities they would like to see in the new campground.”- Jackie Maguire

Ep. 48 Backslider25 Jun 202000:42:48

The Backslider

If you flat tow a car behind your RV, then you are probably aware of everything that can go wrong while trying to back up with the car still attached. Kenny & Sabrina damaged their tow bar while trying to reverse out of a spot once and completely replaced their tow bar. Luckily though, someone is working on a solution, and that person is Richard Larson. He has a background in Aerospace design, and some of his work is even on the international space station. Rick also has a love for RVing and wanted to use his background in design to work out a solution for backing up a tow car safely without the risk of damage or injury.

Rick tells us all about his new product, the Backslider. The Backslider will allow RVers to safely back their tow car up. In a sense, it gives a tow car the characteristics of a trailer when reversing. If you have never heard of the Backslider before, don’t feel bad because it has not hit the market yet, and we are giving you the exclusive right here on today’s show. The Backslider has been in development for six years. Rick takes us through the entire process from idea and testing to now looking for a manufacturer to start production. Rick did a great job explaining the process to us and giving us straightforward terms to understand, like trying to attach Scotch tape to bacon, it’s just not going to work.

To find out more about Backslider and see it in action, go to the website here.

We hope you enjoyed this episode and found it educational. We also ask if you could leave a rating or review. This helps the show get ranked and allows it to reach a broader audience. Take care everyone, and safe travels!!

Ep. 47 RV News with Kenny and Sean11 Jun 202000:44:58

An RV Podcast

In this RV podcast, Kenny and Sean discuss the future of RVing. A recent survey, conducted by KOA, showed an increasing interest in camping. They asked campers and non-campers to rank different forms of travel and camping rated at the top for safety.

“People are valuing the outdoors more than ever right now. Thirty percent of those surveyed said camping is going to be their first trip when they’re able to get out there.” – Tobey O’Rourke CEO of KOA

We also are excited to see the new Ford F-53 chassis is now listed on Winnebago’s website. The new chassis will have a 7.3 liter V8 engine replacing the 6.8 Triton V10. It will also have upgraded rear sway bar and suspension.

Speaking of Winnebago, Kenny talks about how and why he and Sabrina are borrowing a Winnebago Vita. Kenny has to social distance from Sabrina while she is working on the front lines of health care during the pandemic.

Other exciting news included the release of Dometic’s 12 volt refrigerator for aftermarket sale. The refrigerator uses very low amperage is runs quietly. When replacing the standard RV refrigerator, you gain an extra 2 cubic inches of interior storage. That may not sound like a lot, but when it comes ot space in an RV every little bit helps.

Last, but certainly not least, Beyond The Wheel is doing another great giveaway. This time you will have the chance to win a Micro Air Easy Start. Weneed your help! Every fourth episode, we do a show just like this one with no guest. The problem is we have never had a good title for these episodes and have been calling them guestless episodes. We would like a better name and are turning to you, the listeners, for suggestions. Email sean@beyondthewheelpodcast.com with your title suggestion.  If your title is chosen, we will reward you with a Micro Air Easy Start. To find out more about the Micro Air Easy start check out their website here https://www.microair.net/collections/easystart-soft-starters.

Also you can check out the interview we did with them in episode 11.

Micro Air is not affiliated with this contest, Kenny and Sean purchased this Microair Easy Start themselves and will be offering it as a prize on their own.

We hope you enjoy this episode and found it educational we ask if you could leave a rating or review, this helps the show get ranked and allows it to reach a larger audience. Take care everyone and safe travels!!

Ep. 46 Denis Phares Battle Born Batteries CEO28 May 202001:02:45

Lithium Batteries are probably the hottest thing to hit the RV industry in a very long time and today we have Denis Phares on to discuss them. Denis is the CEO of Battle Born Batteries. He helps us pull the curtain back on what goes on inside Battle Born headquarters. Denis shares the step-by-step process that goes into the build of each battery and why it was so important to have each component designed and built in house.

We manufacture our batteries in house so we can have a very high level of quality control, every component, every piece of plastic, every cell, every mosfet. It is the level of quality control that is very unique, plus it is our battery, it’s our design. We designed it to fit our needs and the needs of the industry better rather than some cookie-cutter design.”  – Denis Phares

Denis also takes us back to the beginning of the company and when he met Sean Nichols. Together they formed Battle Born Batteries and it was very interesting to hear Denis talk about how the two of them work together. They may not have always agreed on everything, but the unique skills each of them brought to the table helped push the company to excel and achieve every goal they set.

Denis also tackles the question of lithium battery performance in cold weather, which is something people normally point out to be a negative of lithium power and is not the case at all. In fact, Kenny has his Battle Born Batteries installed in open air and has been in below freezing temps with no issues.

Denis also gives an exclusive on some exciting new products that will be coming soon to the Battle Born Battery line-up.

If you would like to hear more about Battle Born Batteries check out our episode with Sean Nichols, episode 3.  Sean goes into great detail of how a Battle Born Battery operates using a proprietary management system that is installed in each battery.

And if  you would like to find out more about Battle Born Batteries and the different batteries they sell check them out here.
