As a payor, CMS is interested in Utilization Review to evaluate the medical appropriateness of services (necessity of admission, length of stay, services provided) and has made it a Condition of Participation for hospitals serving Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) reports that 20.6% of US adults experienced mental illness in 2019. In August 2020 ā so about 5 months into the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of individuals reporting symptoms associated with anxiety or depression was 36.4% and in February 2021, it had climbed to 41.5%.
