023 Stop winging it! And do this instead 30 Sep 202400:21:48

Welcome Back to Beyond the Clinic!
Hi, I’m Sarah Almond Bushell, and welcome to episode 23 of Beyond the Clinic. Today, we’re tackling something that many of us might be guilty of—“winging it” when it comes to business strategy. This episode is titled Stop Winging It and Do This Instead because, let’s face it, running a successful business requires more than just waiting for clients to knock on your door. We’ll be diving into why a planned, strategic approach to sales and marketing is key for growing your business. Stick around for my top three tips on how you can plan ahead and stop leaving your success to chance!

Episode Summary
In this episode, I share the importance of planning in your business, whether it’s for campaigns, sales activities, or promotions. Based on a poll I ran in my Facebook group, I discovered that most professionals, like myself in the early days, tend to “wing it” without a solid business strategy. But if you want more clients and more revenue, you’ve got to do more than just rely on directories or sit back and wait for business to come to you.

We look at why you should identify key times in the year to focus on promotional campaigns, how to structure your sales activities, and what kind of content you should be producing to align with those key moments. I also share my personal experience of attending a business content planning event and the big lessons I learned from industry expert Janet Murray. Let’s get strategic!

Key Takeaways:

  • Planning is Key: Success comes from being proactive. Don’t wait for clients to come to you—plan ahead and map out your sales activities.
  • Identify Key Promotional Times: Focus your campaigns around times when your audience is most likely to need your service. Awareness days and holidays like Black Friday can be great opportunities for promotions.
  • Diverse Sales Strategies: Don’t just sell the same thing in the same way year-round. You need different ways to sell the same service or product, and a clear strategy for promoting them.
  • Engage and Convert Your Audience: Your content should guide your audience towards becoming clients by addressing their objections, giving them quick wins, and providing proof of your value.
  • Set Deadlines for Decisions: Encourage your audience to act by giving them a deadline. Without it, they may never make a dec

There's something magical about taking your skills, knowledge and expertise and using them in a digital way so that you can reach and help more people. And if done well, it can also massively impact your income.

In this episode, we're exploring the intricacies of creating and launching your own online course, from identifying the right moment in your career to crafting a highly profitable curriculum.

Summary & Key Takeaways:

  1. Perfect Timing: Wondering when to dip your toes into the online course space? If you feel like you've created a 'job for yourself' as your schedule's beyond fully booked, it's time to transition from one-on-one consultations to a scalable model. I'll tell you about my client Chloe, a child psychologist whose online course journey transformed her practice amidst a surge in demand.

  3. Crafting Your Curriculum: Picture this: a wall adorned with colourful Post-it notes mapping out your course journey. Each module represents a stepping stone towards your clients' desired result. This is all about the process, refining your content, and your course outline will take shape.
  4. Market Research Mastery: I'll tell you about my 'baby nutrition course' fiasco, which was my first foray into the online courses world, so you don't fall into the same trap. Learn from my early mistakes and prioritise market research to align your offerings with what your audience truly desires. Dive into Episode Four for expert tips on effective market analysis.

Are you ready to expand your expertise and reach more people? You absolutely can make this happen one online course at a time. Join me next time for a deep dive into those market research essentials – an indispensable tool for all health business owners.

022 How to automate your business to take back your time16 Sep 202400:24:21

Hi there, and welcome to this week's episode of the Beyond the Clinic podcast! I’m Sarah Almond Bushell, and today I’m thrilled to be sharing with you some powerful insights that will help you take your business to the next level. In this episode, I break down the six key parts of your business that you can automate to achieve consistent monthly revenue. Automation isn’t just about saving time—it’s about gaining freedom, something I’m passionate about after 20 years in the NHS!

Episode Summary:
This episode dives into the six essential automations that will allow your business to grow and thrive consistently. From visibility and lead generation to the sales process, onboarding, and offboarding, I explain how automating these elements can create a streamlined, efficient system. I share personal stories of how automation has transformed my own businesses, creating passive income streams that work even while I’m on holiday! If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the feast-and-famine cycle in freelance work, this episode is your go-to guide on how to break that pattern and secure consistent revenue

Key Takeaways:

  1. Automation is Freedom: Once you set it up, automation will run without constant input, freeing you up to focus on growing your business—or taking a well-earned break!
  2. Sales Funnels Simplified: A basic funnel consists of visibility, nurturing your leads, and converting them into customers. It’s easier than you think!
  3. Consistency is Key: Growth happens when you automate and maintain consistency across all aspects of your business.
  4. Email Lists are Gold: Your email list is your most valuable asset. Automating lead generation and nurturing relationships with a welcome email sequence will keep your audience engaged.
  5. Onboarding and Offboarding Matter: These processes ensure a smooth client journey, build trust, and encourage referrals.
  6. Passive Income is Possible: With automated systems, you can generate revenue even when you’re not actively working, like when I earned money from an old weaning course while on holiday!

Action Step:
Take a moment to assess your business. Are there areas where you could use automation to make things run more smoothly? Start with one of the six automations I’ve covered and get it set up today. If you need guidance, book a free discovery call with me

018 Struggling with Email Content? Here’s What to Write19 Aug 202400:37:39

Hi there!

This is part 1 of a 2 part mini series on email marketing sparked by a question I asked my Beyond The Clinic Business Community on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/beyondtheclinicbusiness) back in July. I asked the group about their struggles with email marketing, and the response was insightful.

Most found it challenging to know what to write in your newsletters. So, this week, I'm going to share with you exactly what to write.

We’ll cover the 3 types of emails you need to be sending to your list.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Welcome Sequence:
    • A welcome sequence is a series of emails, essential for making a strong first impression. They help build a connection and establishes you as an authority.
    • Include your story, quirky facts, and establish yourself as a credible expert.
    • Every email must have a link to click to coach your subscriber along a psychological journey towards becoming a buyer.
  2. Nurture Emails:
    • Nurture emails, are your newsletters, and they need to be sent frequently to keep your brand top-of-mind. Long gone are the days of a 'monthly newsletter'.
    • These emails need to be both relatable and specific. I explain how to do that with an example from one of my clients, who is an intuitive eating dietitian.
  3. Sales Campaign Emails:
    • Sales emails have a structured approach and follow a specific format, I share these with you here.

Final Thoughts: Reflect on your current email strategy. Are you emailing with purpose? Use the strategies we discussed to engage your subscribers effectively and move them closer to becoming loyal clients.

Join me next week for part two, where we'll explore strategies to grow your email list and avoid common mistakes with lead magnets. Don't miss it!

017 Why I’m closing my FB group with over 6000 members12 Aug 202400:18:10

Thank you for joining me today for this unscripted, behind-the-scenes episode of Beyond the Clinic. I'm your host, Sarah Almond Bushell, and today I want to share a significant decision I've made in my business. This episode is a bit off-the-cuff because I want to capture my thoughts while they're fresh. I'll be discussing why I've decided to close my Facebook group, which has over 6,000 members.

Episode Summary

In this episode, I delve into the journey of my Facebook group, "The Children's Nutritionist Community," which I started in 2019. Initially, the group grew rapidly and served as a supportive space for parents seeking nutrition advice for their children. However, in recent times, engagement has dwindled, and I've realised that maintaining the group is no longer aligned with my business goals or worth the effort. I discuss the reasons behind this decision, including changes in my business focus, the decline in group activity, and my desire to simplify and optimise my business operations.

Key Takeaways

  1. Initial Success and Growth: The Facebook group started strong, quickly attracting thousands of members. It served as a great platform for connecting with my audience, building trust, and practising live video sessions.
  2. Declining Engagement: Over the past year, engagement in the group has significantly decreased, with only a few posts per week from members. My own reduced activity, including fewer live sessions, contributed to this decline.
  3. Shifting Business Focus: My business has evolved, and I now primarily help parents with their children's fussy eating, rather than the broader topics initially covered in the group. Many new members seek advice on topics outside my current focus, such as weaning and food allergies.
  4. Simplifying Business Operations: Simplifying my business to focus on fewer, more impactful activities has become a priority. Maintaining the Facebook group no longer aligns with this goal, as it requires considerable effort without significant returns.
  5. Mental Health Considerations: Social media, particularly Facebook, impacts my mental health negatively. By moving my communities to a platform like Kajabi, I can offer support without the stress associated with social media.
  6. Testing Platforms: Running a test comparing engagement and sales between Facebook and Instagram revealed that Instagram is

065 Still Creating Like an NHS Clinician? Here’s Why Your Freebie Isn’t Landing (And What Needs to Shift) 21 Jul 202500:23:36

Let’s talk about lead magnets — because if you’re a health professional trying to grow your business online, building an email list is not optional. In this episode, I walk you through exactly why lead magnets matter, how to create one that actually works (spoiler: it’s not about being clever), and what to do if yours is flopping.

I share the most common mistakes I see health pros make (yes, we’re looking at you, overly educational freebies), and I’ll guide you step-by-step through the tweaks that turn browsers into subscribers — and subscribers into clients.

This isn’t about collecting emails for the sake of it. It’s about solving an urgent problem for your audience so they can feel seen, supported, and say: “Yes — you get me.”

You’ll also learn:

  1. What makes a lead magnet irresistible (hint: it’s not the design)
  2. How to write a title that stops the scroll
  3. Why emotional connection always beats information overload
  4. And how tiny tweaks can seriously boost your results

You’ll hear real-life examples, client case studies, and the mindset shifts that make all the difference.

Whether you’re just getting started or refining an existing freebie, this one’s packed with practical advice and strategic insight to help you create a lead magnet that actually does its job.

Key Takeaways

  1. Your lead magnet should offer relief, not just education.
  2. Keep it simple — don’t let the ‘clever clinician’ in you take over.
  3. Titles matter more than you think.
  4. A good lead magnet builds connection, not just your email list.
  5. Market research is your best friend. Listen to what your people really want.

055 How I’d Launch a £10K Offer From Scratch12 May 202500:30:27

Hi there! Have you ever wondered what it really takes to pull off a 10K launch? Not the Instagram-perfect version with champagne corks popping, but the real, step-by-step process from someone who’s done it before. In today’s episode, I’m lifting the lid and sharing exactly how I would create a 10K launch in my nutrition business from scratch. Spoiler alert: it’s not as hard as you think!

So, grab a cuppa, get comfy, and let’s dive in. This episode is packed with actionable steps, mindset shifts, and some real talk about the mistakes to avoid. Oh, and I’ll be sharing the story of a client who went from a nervous wreck to a five-figure launch without even creating her content first.

📋 Episode Summary

In this episode, I’m breaking down the five core steps to turn your quiet idea into a sold-out offer. We’ll talk about:

  • The mindset shifts you need to stop sabotaging your success.
  • The strategy that works, even if your audience is small or you don’t feel salesy.
  • The mistakes I made (and see others make) so you can avoid them.
  • Real-life examples, including how my client Dahlia sold out her program and made over £11,000 in just 10 days.

If you’ve ever thought launching was only for the big names or that you’re not ready, this episode will flip that on its head.

✨ Key Takeaways

  1. Mindset is everything: Launching isn’t just about strategy. If you don’t believe in your offer, it will show in how you price, promote, and show up.
  2. Warm up your audience: A successful launch starts weeks, even months, before you open the cart. Build anticipation and trust by sharing valuable, engaging content.
  3. Validate before you create: Don’t waste time building something nobody wants. Test your idea, get feedback, and even pre-sell your offer to confirm interest.
  4. Sell through service: Use launch events like webinars or challenges to

054 3 Tiny Audience Warm-Up Tricks That Convert Better Than a 10k Follower Count 05 May 202500:19:56

Hi, I’m Sarah Almond Bushell, and if you’ve ever wondered why people are watching your stories, liking your posts, but still not buying, then you’re in the right place. Today, we’re diving into the real reason your audience isn’t converting. Spoiler alert: it’s not your offer or content. It’s because you’ve skipped the most overlooked step in marketing strategy.

In this episode, I’m sharing how to build trust in teeny tiny ways that quietly but powerfully warm up your audience to work with you. These micro conversions are simple, quick, and perfect for busy business owners juggling life, work, and reheated coffee.

Episode Summary

You’re showing up online, sharing tips, posting stories, and still… nothing. It’s not you. The issue is your audience hasn’t been warmed up enough yet. 053 What Makes People Click, Book, and Buy28 Apr 202500:31:19

Have you ever felt like your message just isn’t landing? You’re posting on Instagram, writing emails, updating your website, maybe even blogging or running ads, but the response isn’t what you’d hoped for. When someone does reach out, they’re unsure, vague, and often just asking, “How much do you charge?” before disappearing.

If this sounds familiar, it might be a messaging clarity issue. In this episode, I dive into why not having a niche, or having one that is too broad or not in demand, could be the reason your business feels stuck. I share my story of starting out as a general paediatric dietitian, what changed when I finally niched down, and how you can apply those same steps to get unstuck in your own business.

Episode Summary
In this episode, I tackle the fear of niching down and why it is the key to clarity, connection, and a thriving business. I talk about how staying broad can keep you blurry and why specificity in your messaging is what makes your dream clients say, “Yes, that is me.”

I share my journey from being a jack-of-all-trades paediatric dietitian to becoming the go-to expert for fussy eaters, and how that decision transformed my business. I also walk you through the five steps to finding your niche:

  1. Identifying who you get the best results for.
  2. Pinpointing the specific problem you solve.
  3. Understanding their audience and emotional needs.
  4. Checking for demand in the market.
  5. Declaring and owning your niche with confidence.

If you have been stuck in generalist limbo, this episode will give you the tools to finally niche down and create a business that flows with ease.

Key Takeaways

  • Specificity is key: Broad messaging keeps you blurry, while clear and specific messaging makes you unforgettable.
  • Fear of niching is normal: It is not about locking yourself in a box, but about choosing a direction and building clarity.

051 Why isn’t your business growing?14 Apr 202500:22:44

Welcome to Beyond the Clinic!

If you’ve been feeling stuck in your business, wondering why clients aren’t flowing in despite all your hard work, you’re not alone. No one taught us how to run a business when we trained as healthcare professionals. We were taught to help people, not to market ourselves or build financially sustainable practices.

In this episode, I’m sharing the three most common mistakes healthcare professionals make in business and how to fix them. These insights will transform your business and income, so let’s dive in!

Episode Summary

Here’s what we’re covering today:
1️⃣ The Time-for-Money Trap – Why relying solely on one-to-one sessions keeps your income capped and what to do instead.
2️⃣ The Automation Gap – How not having a client attraction system is making business harder than it needs to be.
3️⃣ The Marketing Myth – Why being on directories or having a website isn’t actually marketing your business.

This episode is all about creating awareness, not blame. Once you understand what’s been holding you back, you can start making changes that will give you the freedom and flexibility you’ve been dreaming of.

Key Takeaways

  • Mistake #1: Relying on One-to-One Sessions
Trading time for money caps your income. Even if you’re fully booked, your growth is limited by the hours in your day. It’s time to rethink how you structure your services and pricing.
  • Mistake #2: Lack of Automation
Without a system to bring in leads on autopilot, you’re stuck on a hamster wheel of endless hustle. Automation can help you attract the right clients while saving you time and energy.
  • Mistake #3: Playing Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe with Directories
Being listed in directories or having a website isn’t enough. Real marketing means reaching people before they even know they need you, building trust, and nurturing them into paying clients.

048 The Smartest Question I've Ever Been Asked by a Prospective Client24 Mar 202500:35:52

Welcome along to episode 48 of Beyond the Clinic! I’m Sarah Almond Bushell, and today I’m talking about the smartest question I’ve ever been asked by a prospective client. It’s a question that could save you time, money, and energy when choosing the right business mentor. I’ll also be sharing my own approach to CPD (Continuing Professional Development) and why it’s a non-negotiable for me as a coach and mentor. Let’s dive in.

Episode Summary
In this episode, I reflect on a brilliant question a prospective client asked me: "What do you do for CPD?" This simple, yet powerful question is one I wish more people would ask before hiring a coach or mentor. CPD is about staying ahead of the curve, continuously learning, and evolving, qualities that are essential in the fast-moving world of business.

I’ll take you behind the scenes of my own CPD practices, from mindset certifications and social media courses to staying informed on industry trends and working with my own mentors. If you’ve ever felt stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure about what to focus on to grow your business, this episode will give you clarity and direction.

Key Takeaways

  • Ask the right questions: Before hiring a coach or mentor, ask how they stay up to date with industry changes.
  • CPD is essential in business: Lifelong learning isn’t just for clinicians—it’s crucial for staying relevant and effective in the business world.
  • Stay ahead of the curve: Business moves fast, and what worked a few years ago might not work today. Keeping up with these changes is key to growth.
  • Mindset matters: Personal development and mindset work are just as important as learning new strategies for business success.
  • Invest in the right learning: Focus on CPD that’s relevant to your current stage in business to avoid wasting time and money.

064 How To Make Your Own Custom GPT AI Assistant14 Jul 202500:32:59

In this episode, I walk you through how I’ve created and implemented custom AI assistants, specifically designed to support freelancers and health professionals like us.

I know firsthand how overwhelming it can feel juggling marketing, admin, and client support on top of the actual work you trained for. That’s why I believe digital assistants aren’t just a “nice-to-have”- they’re a game-changer.

You’ll hear me share a step-by-step guide for building your own custom GPT using ChatGPT, even if you’re not techy (promise). We cover how to get crystal clear on your assistant’s purpose, what kind of knowledge it needs, and how to give it instructions so it actually sounds like you and reflects your expertise.

My goal? To help you reduce burnout, boost your efficiency, and give you back more time to focus on the work that lights you up.

Takeaways:

  • Custom AI assistants can help you save time, energy and headspace.
  • You don't need to be “techy” to build one—just clear on what you want it to do.
  • A GPT can help with client support, coaching, marketing, and repetitive tasks.
  • The key is gathering the right knowledge to create its brain and being specific about it's purpose.
  • You'll also want to make sure it reflects your tone of voice.
  • AI doesn’t replace your expertise—it amplifies it.

045 How much of my personal life should I share on social media? 03 Mar 202500:17:14

Welcome to This Week’s Episode

One of the biggest challenges for clinicians and health professionals using social media is knowing how much personal content to share. You want to build trust and connection with your audience, but where do you draw the line between being relatable and maintaining professionalism?

This week’s episode was inspired by a question from one of my clients in the Accelerate Mastermind group: How much of my personal life should I share on social media? If you’ve ever debated whether to post something personal, worried about oversharing, or felt unsure about how to balance credibility with authenticity, this episode is for you.

Episode Summary

We explore the fine line between personal and professional sharing as a healthcare professional on social media. While personal content helps to build trust, oversharing can dilute your credibility. I share a three-step framework to help you define what to share and what to keep private, so you can show up online with confidence while maintaining professional boundaries.

We also discuss common mistakes clinicians make on social media, why engagement-driven content can be tempting, and how to ensure that what you share aligns with your business goals.

Key Takeaways

  • Personal content builds trust, but it should be intentional and aligned with your values.
  • Oversharing can blur professional boundaries and impact credibility.
  • Define your key themes - choose 3-5 personal elements that support your brand and client relationships.
  • Set clear boundaries - decide in advance what’s off-limits.
  • Consider separate accounts if you also want a private space to share more freely.
  • Take action today - post one small personal insight that reflects a shared value with your audience.

If you found this episode helpful, please leave a review and share it with a colleague who might benefit. And if you have a question you’d like me to cover in a future episode, send me a DM on Instagram - I’d love to hear from you.

044 Why the Algorithm Isn’t Your Enemy – The Truth About How Social Media Works24 Feb 202500:27:31

Social media can feel frustrating, especially when you’re putting in the effort but seeing little return. If you’ve ever wondered why your posts aren’t reaching the right people or why the algorithm seems to be working against you, this episode is for you. Many clinicians and health professionals struggle with engagement, but the good news is that it’s not about posting more, it’s about posting smarter.

Episode Summary

This week, we’re breaking down the four Instagram algorithms - feed, explore, reels, and stories - and how each one determines what gets seen. The key to making social media work for your business isn’t about beating the algorithm but understanding how it operates and what type of content keeps your audience engaged.

We’ll also discuss why engagement, watch time, and content structure are critical to growing your presence online. If you’ve ever felt like social media just isn’t working for you, this episode will help you reframe your approach and make small but impactful changes.

Key Takeaways

  • Social media platforms prioritise engagement and time spent on content, not just frequency of posting.
  • The algorithm isn’t working against you—it’s simply reacting to what people interact with.
  • Reels and shareable content have the highest potential for reaching new audiences.
  • Building a following takes time, but small strategic changes can lead to big improvements.
  • Instead of chasing numbers, focus on creating content that truly connects with your audience.
