97 | "The Bubble" - What Makes Sex Addiction So Cunning, Baffling, and Powerful?17 Mar 202500:37:34

What is addiction?

Ā

How does it work?

Ā

Is it just about deciding to stop destructive behaviors?

Ā

Addiction can be a mystery for many couples.Ā Husbands may wonder if they are addicts after betraying their spouse. Wives often struggle to understand how their partner could engage in such hurtful actions for so long.

Ā

When our marriage faced sexual betrayal six years ago, we were just as confused about sexual addiction as many of you. Since then, we've learned a lot and want to share key insights about addiction.

Ā

We will explore the complexities of sex addiction. We'll discuss how addiction affects not only the addict but also their loved ones, especially spouses.

Ā

We’ll cover the addiction cycle and its pain, using the concept of 'The Bubble' to explain the addict's inner world.

Ā

This episode is a chance to learn and and also foster conversations that lead to deeper intimacy.

Ā

We pray this blesses you,

Ā

Johnny and Emily

When it comes to confronting the aftermath of sexual betrayal, each of us will set out on a unique journey to healing and restoration.

This was certainly true of our guest April Truitt. April shares the deeply personal and transformative story of her marriage's journey through infidelity. After discovering her husband's affair, April recounts the emotional devastation and the path to recovery that followed. With time and guidance from their church and counselor, this precious couple was able to confront their emotional intimacy issues, work through forgiveness, and rebuild their marriage stronger than before.

April also highlights her own battles with shame, negative self-talk, and the transformative power of relying on God's grace. Now, as an author and speaker, she aims to help others facing similar struggles, offering her book, 'A Wife's Recovery from an Affair: The Story of a Faithful God,' and a free journaling workbook on her website.

81 | Giving Thanks In The Aftermath of Porn-Fueled Infidelity25 Nov 202400:26:13

Ah, the holiday season! A time filled with twinkling lights, joyful gatherings, and, let's face it, a few emotional landmines for those who have been through the wringer with sexual betrayal. If the holiday cheer takes a nosedive because you discovered your partner’s unfaithfulness—whether it was last month, a year ago, or even two decades back—we totally get it.Ā  It's completely natural for memories, triggers, and difficult emotions to surface and cast a shadow over the festivities.Ā

Ā

But fear not! We’ve learned one of the most powerful antidotes to this holiday struggle. Filling your heart with thankfulness and gratitude can work wonders to transform those tough feelings into a brighter holiday season. So, let’s exchange a few of those heavy thoughts for a dash of joy and give this season a few glimmers of hope and peace.

Ā

Don your stretchy pants, grab yourself another slice of pumpkin pie, and settle in for a cornucopia of gratitude and thankfulness.

We pray this blesses you,

80 | 7 Caveats for an Effective Healing Apology18 Nov 202400:33:10

Making and apology to our betrayed spouse is one of the more important facets of our recovery process. However, have you had the experience when making an apology to your spouse, it seemed to cause more damage than give relief? So, what is the secret to a good apology and how can it be done with respect and honesty that can lead to true intimacy.

Ā

Since publishing episode #10, When ā€œI’m Sorryā€ Isn’t Enough: 8 Steps to a Healing Apology, we have had many requests for the Healing Apology worksheet, mostly from husbands who realized that they needed to apologize to their spouse for the ways they hurt them through their infidelity. We have gotten some great feedback from those who have used this valuable tool. Many found it very helpful, but others, not so much. Through this feedback we’re going to expand on the Healing Apology resource and give some caveats to help folks have a more successful experience.

Ā

You will not want to miss our conversation today as we talk through 7 caveats for an effective healing apology.

We pray this blesses you,

In this episode, we discuss the difficult topic of forgiving the ā€œother womenā€ involved in a marriage infidelity. 76 | What Do You Mean You Don't Regret Your Sexual Betrayal??21 Oct 202400:35:09

When you hear the statement, "I do not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it". What thoughts and/or emotions surface immediately? Our experience has shown us that the initial reaction from a betrayed spouse will likely differ from that of the one who has broken faith. The former will react in a posture of, "You better regret your past!". And the latter will feel that they are ā€œsupposed toā€ regret their past actions.

Ā

Join us today as we navigate our way through this potentially triggering statement on The Beyond Broken Vows Podcast.

Ā

We pray this blesses you,

Ā

Twelve Promises - from AA & SAA

1. If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through.

2. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.

3. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.

4. We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace.

5. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others.

6. That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear.

7. We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows.

8. Self-seeking will slip away.

9. Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change.

10. Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us.

11. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.

12. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves

Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us - sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them.Ā

71 | From Shame to Freedom: Revisiting "His Story"16 Sep 202400:45:54

It's been almost a year and a half since we first told our stories of sexual addiction and betrayal on our podcast. A lot has happened since then!

Ā

We are so very grateful for the recovery, healing, and growth that both of us have experienced since D-Day in 2018. It has been due to God's help, tons of hard work on our part, and a great support community.

Ā

To commemorate our 37th wedding anniversary, we are taking a little slower pace for the month of September. So, on today's episode, we are revisiting Johnny's story of how a young boy with hopes and dreams for a wonderful future ends up confessing to his wife of 31 years that he is a sex addict and an adulterer.

Ā

His painful story is tragic, but also beautiful because he knows the One who makes a way when there is no way. Jesus can make something beautiful out of the ashes of our lives if we let him. And we know it's true because he's done it for us. He can do it for you too!

Ā

We pray this blesses you,

Ā

Johnny and Emily

September is our anniversary month and we're celebrating by taking a break from creating new episodes this month, but rather updating and replaying a few of our most popular episodes.Ā

Ā

Today we are revisiting Episode #2 Her Story: My Husband Betrayed Me, where Emily bares her soul to tell the story of Johnny's marital infidelity* fueled by pornography use. And although it was Not Her Fault in any way, she is not perfect and you will hear some of the ways she fell short in her life too. But God is bigger than any failure, heartbreak or trauma. He is the redeemer of the lost and the comforter of the broken-hearted. (*name changed for privacy)

69 | 5 Things a Betrayed Wife Needs...(Series) #5 Spiritual Leadership02 Sep 202400:34:43

Wives, do you have a desire for your husband to lead you and your family spiritually? Of course!

Ā

Husbands, are you at a loss for what that looks like and how you can show up for your wife in this area? Yeah, probably.

Ā

Unfortunately, in many Christian marriages, this is often a reality. A wife will take up the responsibility of being the spiritual head of the home because her husband isn’t stepping into that role.

Ā

When betrayal and addiction are revealed, reasons for his passivity become clear. After discovery, it may be necessary for a wife to temporarily take the lead until her husband achieves some recovery and healing, giving him the capacity and desire to lead his wife spiritually.

Ā

Today we are discussing 4 ways a husband can take up his God-given role to lead his wife in authentic spiritual leadership.

Ā

We pray this blesses you,

Ā

65 | 5 Things a Betrayed Wife Needs...(Series) #1 See Her Pain05 Aug 202400:34:17

Following the revelation of sexual betrayal, a couple must decide whether to stay together or not. Choosing to stay married initiates a complex journey of recovery and healing, filled with challenges and triumphs.

Ā

However, the journey may be prolonged due to the betrayer's lack of understanding the needs of the betrayed. Initially, the focus is on the betrayer's recovery and repairing the damage. The betrayed spouse often struggles to feel safe and discern truth.

Ā

Today we will be speaking through the lens of a betraying husband and a betrayed wife because that is our story. We want to shed light on the needs a wife has after the devastation of learning her husband has been unfaithful. Needs she may not even realize she has and needs her husband is most likely completely clueless about.

Ā

Listen in as we share with you what we have learned on our own journey of healing from sexual betrayal.

Ā

We pray this blesses you,

63 | Got Porn Brain? What It Is and How It Affects You and Your Marriage22 Jul 202400:49:25

It wasn’t until I stopped using pornography altogether and the fog lifted that I learned just how much effect it had had on my brain. The further I got away from the porn and the more days of sobriety I achieved, I found that I was able to think more clearly and process the difficult truth of my sex-addiction. Understanding porn’s effect on my brain helped to explain so many of my actions, or lack thereof, before I was finally discovered and came out of the shadows.

Ā

Here are just 4 shocking statistics about pornography use around the world:

  • 28,258 users are watching pornography every second.
  • $3,075.64 is spent on porn every second on the Internet.
  • 88% of scenes in porn films contain acts of physical aggression, and
  • 49% of scenes contain verbal aggression.

Ā

Today on our show, we will talk about the reality of porn-brain and the effect continual use of pornography has on our cognitive abilities, reasoning, and relationships.

Ā

So, buckle up, folks! We're pulling back the curtain on the damaging effects of watching porn - the things that many people might not know or just don't want to talk about. So, grab your favorite drink and let's get started!

Ā

We pray this blesses you,

Ā

62 | Social Media Hack Triggers Trauma From Porn-Fueled Infidelity15 Jul 202400:24:43

How was your week? Did it go as planned? This week, a verse really hit home for us in a big way...

Ā

We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps. Proverbs 16:9

Ā

Imagine this - just as we were about to hit the button to record today’s podcast episode, a sudden interruption caught us off guard. Johnny received a private message that sparked a whirlwind of emotions and confusion. It was from a woman Emily didn't know.

Ā

Talk about getting triggered!

Ā

It turned out to be a false alarm – phew! But, after the dust settled, we decided to share this story with you instead of our originally planned episode on porn-brain, which we will have for you next week.

Ā

Life has a funny way of throwing us curveballs that can leave us feeling off balance and disheartened. But even amid chaos, there is always a path forward for those who trust in the Lord.Ā

Ā

So, get comfortable and settle in for a true-life story of an unexpected event that could have ended in disaster - but, God.

Ā

We pray this blesses you,

Ā

Johnny and Emily

Ā

In today’s show, we will discuss how freedom to live in a new and intimate marriage can come at a high cost. Are you willing to pay it?

Ā

So, grab yourself a summertime drink, like a cool Mint Julep, and listen in for a compelling look at the importance of gaining freedom in your marriage and how to maintain it.

57 | Alone No More: How Isolation Fuels Sex-Addiction and How to Defeat It10 Jun 202400:38:15

What is isolation, and where does it truly begin?

Ā

Imagine a lone animal in the wild, separated from its herd. We've all seen those heart-wrenching documentary scenes where isolation turns them into easy prey. Nature's example is a powerful reminder of a harsh reality: when we isolate ourselves from our community, we become vulnerable to the schemes and traps of our Enemy who is actively looking to devour us. (1 peter 5:8)

Ā

In isolation, destructive and addictive behaviors often take root, dragging us deeper into darkness. But there's hope! How can we break free from the chains of isolation and reclaim our lives?

Ā

Grab your favorite drink and join us for this compelling discussion about the perils of isolation and the practical steps to emerge from its oppressive grip. Together, we'll explore how to reconnect, rebuild, and thrive once again.

56 | Identifying Sex Addiction: Take the First Step Today03 Jun 202400:23:02

As a recovering sex-addict, I now find comfort in knowing that my addiction was real and that there is hope through recovery that I will not have to live the rest of my life as a ā€œdis-integratedā€ man, always trying to hide myself from others based on a lie that if they really knew what I was doing, they would reject me.

Ā

But I didn’t always understand that I truly was a sex-addict. It wasn’t until the idea was expressed to me by someone else that I made the choice to face the reality that sex-addiction could be a present and active part of my life. Having accepted this as a possibility, I sought out help for myself and ultimately found recovery from sex-addiction through a 12-step program.

Ā

In today’s show, we’re going to share some resources to help you discover for yourself if sex-addiction is the destructive force lurking in the darkness of your mind. If so, there is a way out!

We pray this blesses you,

54 | Betrayed Wives Experience Profound Loss, But Do Cheating Husbands?20 May 202400:35:48

Does a cheating husband who has chosen the path of repentance and recovery experience any losses? The short answer is yes. But it may not be evident to a betrayed wife, especially when stacked up against her seemingly infinite losses. She may not see many tangible losses or consequences for his infidelity.

Ā

Today, we are going to outline some perceived perks received by the husband stemming from extra-marital relationships and contrast them with losses his wife experiences due to his betrayal. We’ll also address a question from one of our Beyond Broken Vows Insiders as she wonders, ā€œAre there truly any significant losses for the betrayer and if so, what are they?ā€ You may find that you identify with some of these ā€œperksā€ and/or losses from your own experience with sexual betrayal.

Ā

So, get comfy and settle in for a deeply personal conversation about loss, but also the hope we have in Christ in the midst of pain and injustice.

Ā

We pray this blesses you,

Ā

Johnny and Emily

50 | Are You Thriving or Just Surviving in Marriage After Sexual Betrayal22 Apr 202400:40:23

Is your marriage thriving after sexual betrayal? Maybe not. Maybe you are just surviving.

Ā

You might just be at the beginning of the journey to healing and still don’t even know if you want to stay married. Maybe you and your spouse have been working hard on recovering from this devastation, but you aren’t really connecting in a fulfilling way yet. Or, maybe you have reached a point as a couple where you feel like you have a brand-new marriage, and it’s better than the one you had before betrayal and addiction.

Ā

We fall into this last category, but that doesn’t mean we don’t still have very hard days. Can a marriage thrive even while experiencing recurring painful moments from the past? And might this be a marker for how well a marriage is thriving? We'll let you in on one of our recent really hard days and what it taught us.Ā

Ā

Our prayer is that everyone listening to our podcast will eventually find the peace and joy of a marriage redeemed by God and made new. Ā It is not easy getting here or staying here, but it is so worth the effort!

Ā

Join us today as we have a vulnerable conversation about thriving vs. surviving in marriage post sexual betrayal.

Ā

We pray this blesses you,

46 | Sexuality as a Sex-Addict in Marriage (2 of 3)25 Mar 202400:35:19

Men, do you have a secret relationship with pornography and/or others outside of your marriage? Are you consumed by your thought life and hiding things from your wife that you don’t want her to know? Is sex with your wife becoming challenging, difficult, or just too much effort? Do you feel misunderstood? Are you afraid that if she knew everything about you, she would leave you?

Ā

Last week, Emily shared her perspective on our sexual relationship through the years up until Discovery Day and Disclosure Day when Johnny came clean of all his secrets. She didn’t know what she didn’t know, which made this area of our life progressively challenging.

Ā

Today Johnny is going to share how he viewed our sex life, not knowing he was an addict, but knowing he was hiding secret sin from Emily.

Ā

We pray this blesses you,

Ā

44 | Fearing the Worst? How to Plan for Sex Addiction Slips & Relapses in Your Marriage11 Mar 202400:50:44

Ladies, now that you know your husband has been unfaithful and broken covenant with you; maybe through pornography use, maybe it even escalated to being sexually active outside of your marriage, I want to ask you, what is your biggest fear?

Ā

If you are like me, you are afraid that he will do it again. This is a very real and natural thing to be concerned about. Trust me, if it happened once, it can happen again.

Ā

Now, if your spouse is in recovery and making good, steady forward progress, it may be easier for you to keep that fear at bay. A track record of trustworthiness is wonderful and comforting. It creates safety for you and brings stability to your marriage.Ā  But also, like me, you may eventually get to a place where he’s doing so well that you don’t think it will happen again and your hopeful optimism can produce an emotional crisis when a slip in recovery occurs.

Ā

So, what happens next? What do we do?Ā  These are natural questions to ask and hard to answer when we are blindsided with the reality of persistent sexual integrity issues. This is why we’re going to spend some time talking about Slips and Relapses and the importance of having a Relapse Plan if we find ourselves in that precarious position.

Ā

We pray this blesses you,

Ā

Johnny and Emily
