We've done 125 episodes. Talked to many authors. This is the 2nd time I'm doing a show like this one. The first was back in episode 111.

Here's what this is not. It is not a top 10 list. It's not a comprehensive list. It's just a list of very good books about New Orleans, across several categories.

Ready? On to the books!

09:30 - Has been any talk of Mardi Gras being cancelled next year. Also, has it been cancelled in the past?

10:45 - What got you started in podcasting? Do you have any favorite podcasts?

You Ought To Do a Story About Me - Episode 12221 Oct 202000:50:48

Today's episode is the story of a former NFL player from New Orleans, his struggle with addiction, and the unlikely friendship that helped him survive.

Jackie Wallace was a star at St. Augustine high school and at the University of Arizona. He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings and in his seven year career was involved in three Super Bowls.

Ted Jackson spent 34 years as a photojournalist with the New Orleans Times Picayune. This story is what happened when he wandered out of the newsroom on a hot, humid July afternoon in search of a good shot and a story.

New Orleans By The Letters, Part 2- Episode 12107 Oct 202000:36:45

Today's episode is a solo show. It's the 2nd of two parts where I''ll use the ABCs as a roadmap for enjoying New Orleans.

I'm recording this in October 2020, still in the midst of COVID.

Lots of you ask in the Facebook group about things to do in New Orleans right now, and how to experience the city from afar. The obvious answer to the latter is this podcast as well as our Facebook group and Instagram page.

Beyond that, I came up with this idea of challenging myself to think about New Orleans through the lens of the alphabet.

I thought this would be a fun challenge for me and a different way of generating ideas about things to do and New Orleans history for you.

Hansen's Sno-Bliz and the Story of the New Orleans Snowball - Episode 22704 Apr 202500:39:35
Hansen's Sno-Bliz and the Story of the New Orleans Snowball

In today's episode, we head over to Hansen's Sno-Bliz on Tchoupitoulas Street, in uptown New Orleans. We visit with Ashley Hansen, granddaughter of Ernest and Mary Hansen, and the current owner of Hansen's Sno-Bliz.

Hansen's is the oldest snowball stand in the United States, and is currently open for its 86th season in 2025. In the 1930s, Ernest Hansen created the first machine to shave ice into the snowy powder essential for a terrific New Orleans snowball. That machine is still put to daily use in the shop today!

Mary Hansen ran the business, while Ernest was working as a machinist on the ships docked along the Mississippi. In their later years, the Hansen's ran the snowball stand together. As they got older, their granddaughter Ashley was their to assist, and ultimately to continue the tradition.

"There are no shortcuts to quality" - Mary Hansen

Mary Hansen uttered these words frequently, and ran her business by this code. Today, Ashley continues setting the standard, making the syrups from scratch each day, and using the best possible ingredients. Mary's words are all over the shop - on signs and on every plastic cup sold at Hansen's today.

Listen in and learn all about Mary and Earnest Hansen, and the ubiquitous treat New Orleans claim as their birthright today. You'll hear great family stories, and tales of New Orleans traditions. By the end, you'll be ready to make your plans to visit New Orleans this summer and stop in at Hansen's for a delicious snowball!

Visit and Follow Hansen's Sno-Bliz

If you want to drive yourself crazy with snowball envy, be sure to follow Hansen's Sno-Bliz on Instagram. Go ahead, you know you want to!

Check out their website (snobliz.com) for more history about Hansen's and to be sure they are open for the season. You can also get updates on their Facebook page.

Better still, visit Ashley and the team over at Hansen's in person.

Hansen's Sno-Bliz is located at 4801 Tchoupitoulas Street, New Orleans, LA.

Tchoupitoulas is pronounced CHOP-i-TOO-LAS, but you would already know that since you listened to episode #11 - the Language of New Orleans. You did listen to that episode, right? :)

Hansen's is open from 1-7PM, Tuesday-Sunday, when they are in season. Be sure to check before you go, and don't go on Mondays - they will be closed.  Mondays in New Orleans are for red beans and rice anyway.

Thank You

Thanks to Ashley Hansen for talking with us on a busy afternoon in the middle of snowball season. I went to meet Ashley and learn about the snowball business. What I got instead was a love story, and a new friend!

Thanks also to Paul Broussard who works with Ashley and helped set up our interview!

New Orleans Music Madness Part 3 - Episode #11501 Jul 202001:16:46

Today's episode is the 3rd of three in a row about New Orleans music.

The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) recently did an online tournament where they matched New Orleans music against each other in an NCAA March Madness style bracket they called Music Madness.

People were invited to vote and they published the results online, while also linking to the launch of an online exhibit, called New Orleans Medley: Sounds of the City.

Eli Haddow and Teresa Develin over at THNOC suggested it might be fun if I filled out my own bracket and talked about my selections. I've taken the challenge and covered my initial picks in the last two episodes (#113 and #114).

Today, I am joined by the bracket's creator, Mr. Eric Seiferth. Eric and I talk through my picks, his methodology, and more. We dive deep into the music and the people who made it.

Eli Haddow and Teresa Devlin over at THNOC suggested it might be fun if I filled out my own bracket and talked about my selections. I've taken the challenge and will guide you through the first 16 of 32 first round selections on today's show. We'll cover jazz greats like Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong and more.

Resources

THNOC's Music Madness playlist is available on You Tube here orto  see the bracket, visit the THNOC webpage.

Use this link to skip the brackets and go straight to their online exhibit, New Orleans Medley: Sounds of the City!

You can see my selections here.

Creole Italian Sicilians in New Orleans - Episode #11207 May 202000:55:42
About This Episode

Today's episode is about Sicilian Italians and their contributions to food culture in New Orleans. I'm joined by author and professor Justin Nystrom who wrote a book called Creole Italian; Sicilian Immigrants and the Shaping of New Orleans Food Culture.

Nystrom's book was nominated for a James Beard Award in 2019 and helps shine a light on New Orleans food history through the lens of Sicilians. We cover the earliest imports of Sicilian lemons to New Orleans, discuss the French Quarter of the mid 1800s forward, and more. You're sure to see New Orleans food in a different light after this one.

Books about New Orleans - Episode #11122 Apr 202000:50:25
About This Episode

Today's episode is devoted to books about New Orleans. If you're caught up on Netflix and want to spend some time reading instead, this one's for you.

I recorded this in April 2020. Even if you are listening years from now, this will help you get to know the city better whether you are planning a trip or just wanting to stay connected with New Orleans.

We've done 110 episodes. Talked to many authors. What (I don't think I've done) is give you book recommendations. That's what I'll do today.

Here's what this is not. It is not a top 10 list. It's not a comprehensive list. It's just a list of very good books about New Orleans, across several categories.

For some reason, this topic makes me nervous. Mostly because I am not good about retention and I know a lot of authors!

Let's see how it goes. This might be a recurring sub-series or it might be a one and done!

Spirits to Sanitizer - Episode #11025 Mar 202000:45:38

From spirits to hand sanitizer. The world has changed since our last episode just two weeks ago. Today, we're going to talk about how a couple of local New Orleans businesses are working to help the city respond to the COVID19 pandemic.

Join me as I talk with Sal Bivalacqua of Seven Three Distilling and Jess Bourgeois of Lula Restaurant Distillery. These two business owners essentially used their expertise to create a new business in four days, shifting from the manufacture of spirits for drinking to the production of hand sanitizer.

We talk alcohol, hand sanitizer, Bourbon and more in this episode of the Beyond Bourbon Street podcast.

Resources

Check out Seven Three Distilling Company, then be sure to visit when you can. Their website talks about their company name, product offerings, and tour. We'll be doing a Beyond Bourbon Street event there once life returns to normal.

Lula Restaurant-Distillery is a unique place to enjoy excellent cuisine with views of a working distillery. We will work with Jess at Lula to host a Beyond Bourbon Street event in the future.

Both Lula and Seven Three are currently open for to go purchases. If you are in New Orleans, consider placing an order and supporting them.

Here are several articles discussing New Orleans neighborhoods. This is probably worth doing an entire episode about in the future!

Paul Sanchez - New Orleans Best Songwriter - Episode #10207 Nov 201900:53:07
Paul Sanchez, New Orleans Best Songwriter

Paul Sanchez is the best songwriter in New Orleans. He's been writing songs and telling stories since he was six years old. Join us as we talk about New Orleans, music and storytelling.

Learn about the earliest days of Paul's former band Cowboy Mouth, his connection to Steven Soderbergh, and who has the best singing voice in New Orleans.

This interview first aired in October 2016. My interview skills have improved since then, but listening to this one today made me smile. I hope it brings joy to you as well.

Give it a listen then check out Paul's music online. His first solo release was Jet, Black and Jealous (1992). It's still one of my favorite albums by any singer songwriter.

Louisiana and the Francophonie - Episode #10124 Oct 201900:47:13
Louisiana and the Francophonie

Today's episode is about the story behind Louisiana becoming a member of the Francophonie, also known as l'Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.

The Francophonie is comprised of 84 countries, provinces, and one state (Louisiana) whose membership works together to celebrate and preserve French language and culture.

To help us learn about the Francophonie and Louisiana's role in it, I'm joined by Scott Tilton and Rudy Bazenet.

Scott is a New Orleans native who developed a passion for the French language as a child and led the charge to lobby Louisiana's leadership to apply for admission to the Francophonie.

Rudy Bazenet works in the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and partnered with Scott on this project.

We discuss the road to membership, Louisiana's rich French history, and more.

All this and more in today's episode!
