Episode #114: Mycotoxins with Dr. Andrew Campbell, MD25 Feb 202001:16:36

Why You Should Listen:

In this episode, you will learn about the impact of mycotoxins on health, including antibody testing for mycotoxins.

About My Guest:

My guest for this episode is Dr. Andrew Campbell. Thirty years ago, Andrew Campbell, MD started seeing many women who were sick from their silicone breast implants. Most of them eventually had their implants removed thinking it would solve their health problems, but it didn't. Dr. Campbell then connected with Dr. Pierre Blais in Canada, a PhD expert in breast implants. His research had shown that many implants had molds in them. He then started treating these patients with an antifungal medication, and they improved tremendously. As his reputation grew, many people started to come see him because of molds growing in their home or workplace due to water damage. Many had gone from doctor to doctor without getting any better. These patients had all kinds of tests done, taken all kinds of pills and supplements, and countless were told "it's all in your head". Dr. Campbell has helped well over 10,000 patients with health problems due to molds and mycotoxins. Everyone's immune system is unique and different, like a fingerprint. That is why there is no one treatment, no one size fits all. The key to the diagnosis and treatment is to see if a person has antibodies to mycotoxins from exposure to molds. These are toxins and have an exceedingly bad and toxic effect on health. He has published his findings with people affected by molds and mycotoxins in medical journals and as chapters in medical books. He has lectured on this subject at medical conferences all over the US, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. In all, he has published over 90 studies; 19 of them on the effects of molds and mycotoxins in people.

Key Takeaways:

  • What is the role of mold and mycotoxins in breast implant illness?
  • What is the role of mycotoxins in "chronic Lyme disease"?
  • Where in the body do mycotoxins have the most health-negating effects?
  • What are the symptoms of mycotoxicosis?
  • Do mycotoxins impact a fetus during pregnancy? Can they be passed to a child through breastfeeding?
  • What is MyMycoLab? What mycotoxin antibodies does it test for?
  • How long after an exposure should one wait to perform a MyMycoLab?
  • Do the result differentiate between current or past exposure?
  • Do mycotoxin antibody levels correlate to the severity of illness?
  • How long should one wait before repeating the MyMycoLab after addressing their exposure?
  • Can immune suppression or low immunoglobulins lead to false negative MyMycoLab results?
  • Is there a connection between IgE mycotoxin antibodies and MCAS?
  • How does antibody testing for mycotoxins different from looking for mycotoxins in urine?
  • Is removal from the exposure enough, or does fungal colonization in the body need to be considered as part of a treatment strategy?
  • How is autoimmunity potentially associated with mycotoxins explored?
  • How is mycotoxin-associated illness treated?

Episode #110: Earthing with Clint Ober14 Dec 201901:27:52

Why You Should Listen:

In this episode, you will learn about the benefits of earthing.

About My Guest:

My guest for this episode is Clint Ober. Clinton Ober is CEO of Earth FX Inc., a research and development company located in Palm Springs, California. He first learned of grounding when installing Cable TV systems in Billings, Montana in the early 1960's. A decade later, he formed Telecrafter Corporation and built it into the largest provider of cable installation services in the United States. This company specialized in proper grounding of cable installations for safety and TV signal stability. In the 1980's, he turned his attention to the developing computer industry and partnered with McGraw-Hill to distribute live digital news services, via cable, to PCs. This led to the development of the first cable modem and an increased awareness of need for proper system grounding. Following a health challenge in 1995, he retired and embarked on a personal journey looking for a higher purpose in life. During his travels, he noticed people wearing plastic and rubber soled shoes that insulate the body from earth. He wondered if no longer being naturally grounded could affect us. The question led to an experiment that suggested grounding alone reduced chronic pain and improved sleep. Thereafter he developed a working hypothesis: Earth grounding the human body normalizes functioning of all body systems (Corollary: The body utilizes the earth's electrical potential and free electrons to maintain its internal electrical stability for the normal functioning of all self-regulating and self-healing systems). Over the past twenty years, he has supported a host of research studies (Earthing Institute) that collectively demonstrate that grounding alone reduces inflammation and promotes normal functioning of all body systems.

Key Takeaways:

  • What is earthing (or grounding), and why is it important for health?
  • Is there a difference in disease prevalence between wild and domestic animals?
  • What is the earth charge, and what role does it play in grounding?
  • How might grounding lead to reduction in inflammation and pain?
  • Are the potential inflammation-reducing effects of grounding observable with thermography?
  • How does grounding affect sleep and cortisol regulation?
  • Can grounding be used as a tool to mitigate exposure to EMFs?
  • How might grounding normalize blood coagulation and increase oxygenation?
  • Can grounding lead to increased ATP production and improved mitochondrial function?
  • How long should one be grounded each day?
  • Why might some with conditions such as Lyme disease initially feel worse with grounding technologies?
  • Is there a difference between grounding with an electrical socket as compared to a grounding rod in the earth?

About My Guest:

My guest for this episode is Beth O'Hara. Beth O'Hara is a Functional Naturopath and Functional Genetic Analyst specializing in Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, porphyria, glucuronidation, and genetics. She holds a Doctorate in Naturopathy specializing in Functional Naturopathic Approaches and a Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy. Beth found her own root causes contributing to her chronic health challenges and has been able to heal. After decades of seeing traditional health care practitioners, she felt like she was at the end of her rope. The medications often made her worse. Being given the wrong supplements didn't help either. Finally, she discovered a three-part approach that helped her get well: Genetic Analysis, Functional Naturopathy, and Emotional Wellness. Combining the three approaches allowed her to explore genetic root causes underlying her own MCAS. She analyzed her lab testing to better understand imbalances in her body and chose supplements personalized for her individual needs. Stress reduction techniques form a big part of her self-care as well. These things all allowed her body to heal. Since then, her passion is working with others with MCAS to find their root causes and support their healing. Beth has been in practice for over 10 years and has helped hundreds of clients. Together, she works with you to identify your unique root causes, analyze your lab results, and develop a customized healing plan based on your needs, goals, and lifestyle.

An avid reader and lifelong student, Dr. Rawls studied all of the research available on Lyme disease, and put everything he learned into practice in his own life. Ultimately, it was a combination of diet, lifestyle, and herbal therapy that resulted in his recovery. In the more than 10 years since, Dr. Rawls has helped thousands of patients find their path to healing from Lyme disease and chronic illness. He is the author of the best-selling book Unlocking Lyme, and the Medical Director of RawlsMD.com and Vital Plan, an online holistic health company.

Episode #105: Essential Oils with Jodi Cohen20 Sep 201901:12:19

Why You Should Listen:

In this episode, you will learn about the use of essential oils in supporting health recovery and health optimization.

About My Guest:

My guest for this episode is Jodi Cohen. Jodi Cohen is a bestselling author, award-winning journalist, functional practitioner, busy mom, loyal friend, and unshakable cheerleader dedicated to helping you and your family regain vibrant health. She is the founder of Vibrant Blue Oils where she combines her training in nutritional therapy and aromatherapy to create unique proprietary blends of organic and wild-crafted essential oils. Her journey to essential oils began with her own health struggles when anxiety, depression, and exhaustion led her to being barely able to function. Simple tasks like answering the phone or doing laundry were completely overwhelming. Jodi has helped over 50,000 clients heal from brain-related challenges including anxiety, insomnia, and autoimmunity. She had tried intense restrictive diets, expensive supplements, and all sorts of therapies. These helped a little, but very little. She was constantly treading water and barely stating afloat, but not improving. Her protocols kept her from drowning, but never pulled her out of the deep water. Everything shifted when a friend gifted her a box of essential oils with an assurance that they would help. She began formulating essential oil blends based on her knowledge of physiology. Her first was to support her own exhausted adrenal glands and within minutes she felt like herself for the first time in months. She finally had a life vest. Eventually, friends and clients tested the formulations with similar success. As the author of the #1 Bestselling book, Healing with Essential Oils, Jodi was inspired to educate clinicians and individuals after personally experiencing the profound physical and mental benefits that essential oils could deliver. For the past ten years, Jodi has worked closely with healthcare practitioners - including MDs, NDs, nurse practitioners, chiropractors, acupuncturists, health coaches, nutritionists and yoga instructors - to discover the best essential oil protocols in clinical practice to support underlying imbalances that often lead to disease, including supporting sleep, stress, digestion, inflammation, detoxification, and blood-sugar imbalances.

Episode #211: Actinobacteria and Endotoxins in CIRS with Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker, MD03 Feb 202501:50:43

Why You Should Listen:

In this episode, you will learn about the role of Actinobacteria and Endotoxins in CIRS.

About My Guest:

My guest for this episode is Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker.  Ritchie Shoemaker, MD is a recognized leader in patient care, research, and an education pioneer in the field of biotoxin related illness.  While illness acquired following exposure to the interior environment of water-damaged buildings (WDB) comprises the bulk of Dr. Shoemaker's daily practice, other illnesses caused by exposure to biologically-produced toxins are quite similar in their "final common pathway."  What this means is that while the illness might begin acutely with exposure to fungi, spirochetes, apicomplexans, dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria, for example, in its chronic form, each of these illnesses has similar symptoms, lab findings, and Visual Contrast Sensitivity (VCS) findings.  Taken together the inflammatory illness from each of these diverse sources is known as  Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome.

Key Takeaways:

  • Is CIRS generally caused by a single trigger or multiple triggers?
  • What HLA-DR types may be susceptible to Actinobacteria or endotoxins?
  • How does one determine when MARCoNS are making polycyclic ethers?
  • What is the latest on biotoxin illness testing through HumanBiomics?
  • Is it the Actinobacteria or a toxin produced by the bacteria that leads to illness?
  • Is it best to start by testing the environment or by testing the person?
  • Are some Actinobacteria a healthy part of our microbiome?
  • What criteria are used to evaluate Actinobacteria testing?
  • Is the solution to Actinobacteria a traditional remediation?
  • How do people acquire skin Actinobacteria?
  • How are skin Actinobacteria reduced over time?
  • Are Actinobacteria in the sinuses a factor?
  • How are Actinobacteria in the oral cavity addressed?
  • How do endotoxins enter the body?
  • Can endotoxin production be from endogenous bacteria?
  • What is the best way to establish CIRS causation?
  • What is the role of beta glucans in CIRS?

About My Guest:

My guest for this episode is Dr. Neil Nathan. Neil Nathan, MD was introduced with a more formal summary of his bio in podcast episode #19. For this podcast, I want to be more informal and just say how much I value and respect Dr. Nathan and the work that he does to help his patients. Dr. Nathan has been a mentor to me over the years, and I am always grateful when there are more opportunities to learn from him. I appreciate that Dr. Nathan has never accepted the toolbox that he has available and that he has continued to look for new and better options to help his population of chronically ill patients. While his toolbox is quite large, he's still looking, still searching, still open to new and different approaches. Until we have all the answers, this is the type of doctor I think most of us would want. In his new book "Toxic: Heal Your Body from Mold Toxicity, Lyme Disease, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, and Chronic Environmental Illness", Dr. Nathan shares his wisdom, experience, and toolbox with all of us. It is profoundly enlightening.

Episode #210: Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome with Dr. Derik Anderson, DC, CPT, CSN20 Jan 202501:47:57

Why You Should Listen:

In this episode, you will learn about Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and effective approaches to treatment.

About My Guest:

My guest for this episode is Dr. Derik Anderson.  Derik Anderson, DC, CPT, CSN helps his patients be healthier by utilizing his education and personal and professional backgrounds.  Dr. Anderson grew up wanting to help people and initially planned to go to business school to work in energy conservation.  After a good friend's life was positively changed by chiropractic care, he had a change of heart. His friend spent two years with horrific intestinal problems and saw over a dozen providers, but no one could help her – until she saw a chiropractor.  The chiropractor knew that the vertebra and muscles around them affected the nerves that controlled the intestines. After treatment, she was no longer bed-ridden and went back to teaching, traveling and leading an active life.  Dr. Anderson realized that health care was his calling and his passion for helping people was channeled into chiropractic.  Dr. Anderson lives what he practices.  He is an avid runner, nationally competitive sailor, surfs, and is a youth coach.  Dr. Anderson eats a diet high in vegetables, low in starch, and drinks several quarts of water each day. Why? Food is our bodies' fuel and muscles consume 70% of that fuel (the brain consumes another 20%), so to reach our maximum potential, our food chain needs to be clean, appropriate, and healthy for our needs.

Episode #84: Life After Mold with Dr. Lauren Tessier, ND28 Sep 201801:15:46

Why You Should Listen:

In this episode, you will learn about mold illness, Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), and "Life After Mold".

About My Guest:

My guest for this episode is Dr. Lauren Tessier. Lauren Tessier, ND is a Naturopathic Physician licensed in the state of Vermont. She received her Bachelors in Premedical Sciences and Health Psychology from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston and later became a Naturopathic Physician at Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington. Her practice, Life After Mold, uses a patient-centered approach to help recover those that are suffering from mold-related illness. She combines naturopathic, functional, and integrative medicine to address the entire person. She is a Shoemaker Certified Physician specializing in the treatment of Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) which results from exposure to water-damaged buildings. In 2011, Hurricane Irene created an unimaginable flood in Waterbury, Vermont, and she was unprepared for what she would see next in her practice. Patients were ill with unexplained rashes, allergies that did not respond to treatment, fatigue, breathing difficulties, neurological complaints, headaches, nausea, and immune system dysfunction. When her normal approaches no longer worked for these patients, she dove deep into mold-related illness. Her practice is dedicated to helping those suffering with mold, biotoxin, and mycotoxin associated illness resulting from water-damaged buildings. As time passed, she came to the belief that the environment plays a role in all chronic illness. Environmental illness includes mold, heavy metals, glyphosate exposure, chronic infections such as Lyme disease, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. Dr. Tessier is an Executive Board Member of the International Society for Environmentally Acquired Illness (ISEAI) which aims to advance medical knowledge surrounding environmentally acquired illness.

Key Takeaways:

  • What are some of the environmental factors that may predispose an environment to water-damage and the potential for mold illness?
  • What are some of the illness-creating substances that are found in a water-damaged building?
  • What are common symptoms of CIRS?
  • Are there basic screening tests that can be performed of an environment before investing in an IEP?
  • How important are the HLA haplotypes in CIRS?
  • Is there clinical value in urinary mycotoxin testing?
  • Can molds encountered in a water-damaged building lead to colonization within the body?
  • When considering binders, what is absorption vs. adsorbtion?
  • Why is bile flow important and how might it be supported?
  • What options might help reducing inflammation in those with CIRS?
  • Are there downsides of exogenous glutathione supplementation?
  • How important is eradicating MARCoNS in CIRS?
  • How might VIP and Synapsin be helpful in those with CIRS?
  • What triggers Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) and how might it be addressed?
  • When someone feels significantly worse, what rescue items might help to move through a detox or Herxheimer reaction?
  • Is there a role for limbic system retraining in CIRS?

Episode #83: Parent Essential Oils with Brian Peskin, BSEE-MIT12 Sep 201801:32:45

Why You Should Listen:

In this episode, you will learn about Parent Essential Oils, why unadulterated omega 6 is critical for health, and how PEOs are key to cell membrane health.

About My Guest:

My guest for this episode is Professor Brian Peskin.  Brian Peskin, BSEE-MIT is a world-leading scientist specializing in parent essential fatty acids or EFAs — termed Parent Essential Oils or PEOs — and their direct relationship to cardiovascular disease, cancer, and wound care. While advancing the scientific understanding of the role of essential fatty acids in the body's metabolic pathways, he has also advanced the discoveries of Nobel Prize-winner Otto Warburg, MD, PhD. — to increase cellular oxygenation.  These concepts are described in his book "The Hidden Story of Cancer".  Amazingly, there is a fundamental cancer-heart disease connection, whereby the same physiologic solution solves both conditions. This information will lead to a new understanding of how to treat and prevent both cancer and heart disease.  The basis for Peskin's current work, grounded strictly in state-of-the-art science — in particular, physiology — can be found in his seminal work and peer-reviewed medical journal articles. Clinical physicians throughout the world have validated his EFA recommendations.  In the most exciting development to date, Brian's theoretical conclusions were recently and completely validated in a physiological experiment by precise instrumentation capable of measuring arterial compliance. This experiment provided the first conclusive clinical proof and validation of his theory.

Key Takeaways:

  • What are parent essential oils (PEOs)?
  • Why is fish oil not "essential" and potentially harmful?
  • What are derivatives?
  • Which oils provide parent essential oils?
  • What is an adulterated oil and where are these encountered?
  • What are the downsides of fish oil?  How might fish oil be a poor choice in those with chronic infections?
  • What role do PEOs play in cell membrane health?
  • How might PEOs help those dealing with insulin resistance and diabetes?
  • What is the role of oxygen saturation in cancer?
  • How do PEOs improve oxygen saturation in the body?
  • How might PEOs help those with low energy or fatigue?
  • What is the role of PEOs in reducing inflammation?
  • What are some of the key improvements people may note with PEO incorporation?
