In this week's episode, Chriso and Zacca recap their weekend at the Shepparton Marathon Festival, where Chriso supported athletes on his bike and Zacca cheered on runners. Chriso also shares his training progress for an upcoming half marathon.


This week special episode includes two #teamrun2pb athletes, Scotty Kennedy and Mel Hiscock.

Scotty talks to us about his journey since joining Run2PB in April 2023. Scotty has significantly increased his mileage and improved his 10km time. As a hybrid athlete, he uses running to prepare for Hyrox, DEKA, and Spartan events.

Mel Hiscock returns to the show, she joined Run2PB back in October of 2022 and has lowered her 5k time from 23:50 down to 22:15 and her half marathon time from 1:57:35 down to a new mark of 1:46:56 set over the weekend, we hear all about that race and her recent training progress.

Chris and Zacca share their training updates. Chris crushed some hill reps and enjoyed a long run banking 83km for the week in preparation for the Burnley Half Marathon. Zacca reflects on consistent weeks with workouts and sets his sights on increasing mileage, embracing the challenge. He also shares his experience running in the new Asics Kayano 31, discussing his impressions and the shoe's legacy with Chris.

This week's guest is Taren "Taz" Kirby, a Run2PB member since May 2020. Taz has achieved personal bests in distances ranging from 1500m to the Half Marathon, competing in track, road, and cross country races. Known for her consistency and determination, Taz faced a major challenge in mid-2023 with a breast cancer diagnosis. Demonstrating incredible strength, she completed treatment and is now cancer-free. Remarkably, she even set a new 5km PB of 26:31 in June 2024.


The episode dives into Taz's running journey, recent challenges, and her responses to Chris' "medium-quick" questions.

This week on the Better with Running Podcast, its Melbourne Marathon race week edition!

In a training update, we hear from Chris about his taper week, as he puts the icing on the cake for his preparation, he openly talks through some struggles and doubts off the back of a session Zacca hits his biggest week since May, hitting 80k and with big improvements to his knee is starting to eye off races and enjoying resuming full training.

Zacca and Chriso swoon over Kipchoge  and his WR run in the Berlin Marathon, talking through some of the insane paces. We also hear about some of the quirky characters of the day, including the famous bottle man and also pineapple man.

We get an around the grounds on the #teamrun2pb athletes who towed the line at Berlin, including this weeks Run2PB hero of the Week – Edo, who managed to snag a huge 30+min PB along with getting an upgrade to the race hotel and snagging that famous viral photo with Kipchoge.

Zacca and Chris to talk through her Melbourne Marathon build up, as we edge closer to race day we hear about sophs long run and final workouts, along with her taper and nutrition plans.

Zac talks through the ongoing battle with his knee and the patience required to get results and momentum from his rehab program, he highlights a mini workout that surprisingly came out ok, but looks ahead to the changes he needs to make to get back moving forward with the help of his physio James Telford.

Chris details his final big long run and sessions and reflects on whats been an amazing training block and marathon build with his great training partner Anna Gee and the excitement he has for race day and seeing the whole running community on the day.

This weeks run2pb hero is announced, and its one of zacca’s athletes – Matty Morgan, who has overcome some obstacles of late with a return to running with a sacral injury but is now back and rolling including a podium on the trails.

Chris and Zac introduce Run2PB’s 20th coach to the community, Guy Walters is based in Newcastle, NSW. This week on the Better With Running Podcast, Zacca and Chris provide an update on their training weeks.

We hear about Chris hitting a big long run and clocking 81ks as he continues to build for the marathon, he talks about how he continues to enjoy the challenge and process of training for a marathon once again.

Zacca reveals his new formal coaching setup, and how he is adapting to having sessions and runs set for him, before getting back on the boulevard for more choice words from cyclists and cars. His session of 5min reps is followed by a long run out at the flats with his athlete James Telford who successfully ticked off a strong long run whilst doing a physio consult in the process.

Zacca’s training partner and MUAC member, Steve Langdon, joins the guys for chat about all things sports psychology and in particular focussing on practical tips leading into the Melbourne Marathon around the taper week, pre race day nerves, visualisation and race day mental strategies. Steve also answers some questions about dealing with missing goal races and bouncing back, and also provides some helpful tips for how you can engage with your support network, family and friends as you get closer to race day.

Chris and Zac have a listener question from Rory Flanigan, Run2PB Athlete & Bendigo Bat  “Do you think Mona’s formula of double your half and add 7 minutes is a good way to calculate your goal?” The boys openly chat around the use of marathon predictions and formulas, they go into detail as to what they utilise and how they go about predicting goal times for the marathon.

Zacca and Chris are joined by a special guest – Darren Templeton, Founder of the Run the Tan Showcase Event, we hear about Darrens running journey, his passion for starting this event and his why along with the plans for the event in 2023. Darren also invites listeners to his weekly run club, at the Tan, with a special guest  Olympian Eloise Wellings  and the chance to  joinScotty Orchard for a lap or two around the Tan Track. This week on the Better With Running Podcast, Zacca and Chris open the show with a special guest joining them who is on an epic world record attempt, Erchana Murray Bartlett is running a marathon every day, making my way from the tip of mainland Australia (Cape York) to the toe (Melbourne) that’s 155 consecutive marathons for a total of 6,200kms to spread a very important message - Extinction is a CHOICE and she has partnered with the wilderness society to raise $62,000.

The boys try to get their head around how this was even conceptualised, the planning involved, if she has to do it without stopping, the fuel she takes on, highlights along the way and the journey plans.

Is an inspiring story from someone genuinely attempting something pretty crazy.

Zacca and Chris talk through their running updates, including Chris doing some marathon training to rekindle the feels of mara blocks to help his coaching and go on the journey with his athletes. Zacca continues to get momentum, although felt the wrath of joining a run mid way through on his sunday run.

The Run2PB Hero of the week is revealed with Run2PB Coach James Hansen, making headlines across the nation breaking the AU Parkrun Record runing 13:53, and the lads push for him to bring the ashes back and get the global record.

Zacca launches the driver over an article that he came across relating to Mark Zuckerberg hating on running in a podcast with joe rogan, and then digs up some history and examples of when he used to love running

Chris and Zacca both put the call out to Mark to join Run2PB and find the love of running.

Long Time Friend of the Show from Run Culture, Dane Verwey is back to chat to the boys about Binary Bias and Running by Feel, he talks through his definitions on the topics, experiences as a phyiso and coach, before they all riff on their own coaching experiences on the topic.

EP105 James Hansen - Chasing Races and P.Bs in Europe, Preparing for National XC and Future Goals.24 Aug 202201:23:38

Chris gives us a recap of his pacing job at Ballarat as he ventured down for the first time, with a job of pacing elite marathoner, run2pb coach and regular BWR host, Sophie Fitt. They also finally meet for the first time in real life and get to share a race experience together. Zacca continues his rebuild and return to running.

James Hansen joins the boys for a catch up, last time they caught up was in April and James had his sights set on a few domestic road races, before heading to Europe, we get an insight into his life on the road in Europe  as an athlete trying to run fast times and the challenges of getting into races. 

James now back in Tasmania is preparing for a tilt at making the Australian Team for the World Cross Country Championships next year being held in Bathurst, and this weekend he lines up at the National Championships in Adelaide, representing Tasmania, we hear about his hopes for the race and then future race and training plans as he turns his attention to chasing down that Aus Singlet.

He was racing through a vineyard on proper xc through mud and water etc, we hear via his coach Matt Davy about his tactics to take down a young punter!

In the 100th episode of Better with Running Podcast, Zacca and Chris are joined by Sophie Fitt.

We hear a training update from them all, Sophie talks about her 1st race back and how she is building mileage and aiming towards the melbourne marathon whilst juggling a busy schedule, we discuss how she is managing her body with the increased training demands and find out about some of her race plans. Chris continues to recover from his half before hitting a workout with Anna, followed by a meteor shower. Zacca talks about some light running, taking the pressure off with clock face running after a long bout of races.

In our Run2PB Heroes segment Nathan Contin is recognised, he coached by one of our Run2PB heroes Jack Davies, Nathan has been with us for a few months now and taken his 5km PB from just over 25 minutes, down to 21.45 on Saturday at Albert Park parkrun, currently working towards a half marathon at Run Melbourne in a couple of weeks and then Melbourne Marathon in October

In Soph's Health Corner, we discuss how Run2PB managed an an enquiry about  a junior athlete under the age of 13, wanting help with their distance running, they’ve run multiple half marathons and marathons, we hear about the dangers of this as well as the physical and emotional stress of putting young children through long distance running.

We hear from two listeners on a questions regarding plantar fasica pain and how to manage it, and another question regarding gauging easy pace/effort and the use of heart rate in training.,

Soph, Chris and Zacca discuss a tweet from Kara Goucher regarding leaving pebbles in her shoes, which is very triggering for soph in particulary.

Zacca catches up with Sean Whipp who is an IAAF representative manager, they discuss how he manages his athletes, getting his athletes into meets across the globe, how he has built his roster and what he is learning on this new journey. Sean also give us a preview of the Australian chances at the upcoming World champs and Comm Games.

Chris and Zac recap the highs and lows of the Gold Coast Marathon, we hear about an emotional half marathon for Chris, whilst Zacca recaps a tough 10k, after a long series of races. They both vow to come back stronger as they gear up for another head to head at Bundoora XCR.

We hear about packed trams, the buzzing event feel and a disturbing experience from a man in speedos, who chose the wrong footwear and was paying the price for it, a definite lowlight from the weekend.

Chris and Zac move onto highlights and reflect on some individual results mentioned by some of the Run2PB coaches, as they discuss how getting to the start line and taking on the event is the big achievement. We hear the boys talk about cult figure 2:07 Marathoner Yuki, who went onto finish the marathon in 3:57 after hitting trouble at 5k and they boys are in awe of his effort.

The guys rounds out the show talking about the 100th episode and that Sophie Fitt will be back for the big occasion.

Chris and Zac recount their battle at the farm, as they discuss lining up in a big field and duking it out over a muddy course, as they both are happy with the hit out as they head towards the gold coast marathon in their respective events.

Chris talks us through some creepy events happening on his runs, with some mysterious characters popping up for cameos in his runs, which scares Zacca from joining him for any future runs.

The boys lead into a new segment " Run2PB Heroes", where they shine a light on some inspiring and amazing people in the community, this week they give a shout out to Jo from Melbourne, one of Sophie Fitt’s athletes. Jo’s had a pretty tough 2022 recovering from third degree burns that have required time in hospital, skin grafts and extensive rehab, She’s also had to battle covid and the stress of moving interstate, but is gradually returning to running and has a goal to run the 10km at Gold Coast.

Chris and Zacca talk about John Cox's massive breakthrough on the track breaking 10mins, in potentially the same race as his partner Kelly Dicks, from Single Malt Marathoners Podcast fame.  We hear more from around the grounds including some results  from Cruden Farm.

Zacca and Chris touch on some of the exciting races at the recent Australian Track and Field Championships, including a shout out to James Hansen, Run2PB coach finishing 5th with a new P.B in the Mens 5000m, before going into more detail about their favourite race of the meet.

The boys are in awe over a Tommy Hughes - 60+ Masters World Record Marathon run at Manchester and try to come to terms with how good that run is for someone at that age.

Chris previews his interview with this weeks guest Run2PB athlete Kate Dainton, where in a raw and open chat chat between coach and athlete, we hear about Kate going from drinking cosmopolitans on a Friday night having never run or played sport before at 35 to running ultra marathons, raising money for her terminally ill step mum and there’s a few laughs in there including Kate’s short lived TV career.

Chris talks us through the excitement of race week but also the logistics involved in getting to the event and towing the line just before bed time!

Zac catches up with Run2PB Coach Josh Harris, chatting about his return to form on the track, and how he is slowly ramping his training up after some setbacks in the past few years.

Josh talks about some key learnings from coaching and from his athlete and also about his role as a mentor at the Tassie Based Spark Track Club, and we also close out with hearing about his World Beer Mile plans, and how he is keen to take on the worlds best in Belgium later this year.

For this week's Listener Question, Chris and Zac tackle one around preparing for your marathon block and what aspects of training you should focus on, especially when you have a long term goal pegged out.

Zacca introduces his new co-host for this new season of the better with running podcast, Run2PB Coach Chris Armstrong. They discuss the big shoes required to fill, after taking over Matt's job, but we also reassure listeners that Matt (Mattress) will be featured throughout the season with regular updates and training insights.

Chris talks us through his plans for the season 2022, including an assault on his 3km Track P.B at the 'home of P.B's' - Box Hills, Hagenauer Reserve. He takes us through some of his current training, including explaining the "BoTan" and the origins of the name, and we also hear about his solo track session, which finished with a photo shoot on the track. Chris also sets the scene for his upcoming season which includes the Athletics Victoria XCR calendar of races and going full noise at the Gold Coast Half Marathon. He also leaves the door open for contract negotiations for a key signing for the Melb University Athletics Club.

Zacca talks through coming off the marathon with an extended break and the highs and lows of coming back onto strava and piecing together consistent weeks, before being caught out hitting a track workout with his club mates, including butchering his splits on the watch, but we  do hear about the fire in the belly coming back on the last rep. Zacca also sets his sights on the Gold Coast Marathon Weekend, with a 10k or Half on the cards. 

In our first "around the grounds" segment for 2022, we hear about some of Chris's stable doing some big things across a number of events, recognising a number of individual inspiring stories, including Ian Newman breaking 90mins over in the UK and how the Run2PB rallied behind him with some strava love before and after his big race. Chris also lets us know about his Father / Daughter combo that he has the pleasure to coach, as they are both astounded by Phil's 63min 10km, at the age of 79.

The boys finish up the show talking through some exciting results at the professional level that have caught their eye this past summer, before going down a rabbit hole of ways to get more fans to Australian athletics meets.

Just 4 weeks out from Melbourne Marathon, Zacca and Matt catch up to discuss how they’re progressing. Zacca gets out for another crack at the Portsea Fartlek, then changes things up with a Saturday long run session, hitting 30km of 1km ON/1km OFF. Along the way he adds some reconnaissance of parts of the Melbourne Marathon course.

Matt keeps his mileage up but reduces the amount of intensity in his week as he comes off a solid Sunday. Getting the leg turnover in a 30min fartlek of 5 x 2min on / 1min off, 5 x 1min on/1min off, 5 x 30sec on/30sec off. He then heads down to Safety Beach for a longer progression run of just over 12km, starting at marathon effort before pushing down. Matt finishes the week off by meeting up with Run2PB athlete Rhys and getting out for the long run of 2.40hr around Devilbend.

Listener question comes in around whether or not to race before your goal marathon and what the pros and cons are in doing so.

Zacca and Matt catch up about how their Melbourne Marathon prep is going. Both switch to a Wednesday / Sunday workout setup to allow for enough recovery from the more marathon specific workouts. Matt increases his fartlek length by working through a 48min fartlek, whilst Zacca gets into a 5k/4k/3k/2k/1k and has to use some strong mental game as his stomach gets a little upset. They both head out for Sunday long run workouts, Matt going for a longer progression style workout, wanting to be really hurting at the 34k mark and teaching the body to not panic. Zacca gets out for a 25min marathon effort at the back end of his long run, charging over some rolling hills to simulate the back end of the Melbourne Marathon. 

Zacca also catches up with Jordan Oneill from 02 Events and Zareen Sayed from Beyond Blue about an exciting event that is coming to Melbourne on Sunday 5th of December, the 2XU Wellness Run. They chat about the vision for the event, what the event can do for the wider community in regards to mental health and what ways people have been able to use the Beyond Blue organisation during the COVID pandemic.

Zacca and Matt catch up about how their Melbourne Marathon prep is going. Coming off a down week, Matt ups the mileage above 160km. He discusses his longer fartlek session, 12 x 2min on / 1min off, works on some speed with some 30sec surges and hits his first marathon specific session in a long run. They also discuss the idea behind fasted long runs and the adaptations that brings.

Zacca chats about his reduced volume of session week, hitting some quality and running a session PB in the MD fartlek. On a rough weather day nails his bread and butter long progression run, then raises the long run to 2.30hrs to close out the week with a 144km.

Zacca and Matt discuss the results over the weekend from some of the Run2PB Team, with some big runs over in the Perth Marathon Festival, as well as the Mclaren Vale Half Marathon.

Always a great pub debate question comes in around whether there is a rule of thumb for determining easy/recovery run paces. Zacca and Matt discuss their own thoughts and how they gauge their easy effort. They also chat about the various purposes of the easy run.

Zacca and Matt chat about how their weeks have gone. Matt discusses getting a delayed response to Pfizer and really has to pull back on his down week. He gets stung by a bee in his Diddy K Fartlek, then knocks out 2 x 10min with Ben around Ben’s Loop. Finishing the week with the most important run of the week, a long run of 30km. Zacca has a crack at the Portsea Fartlek and basically splits the same time as Matt. He ups his mid week run, before having to work his way mentally through a solid marathon specific session. Finishing the week with a brisk 32k to close out a big week of 146km. Some big results over the weekend to discuss, with many Run2PB athletes taking on the Sunshine Coast Half and Marathons, along with plenty of action around the streets with people taking on the Virtual Melbourne Maraton Festival event along with some impressive Time Trials. Captain of the Bendigo Bats and Run2PB coach Andy Buchanan jumps on to discuss how he’s been tracking since the Gold Coast Marathon cancellation. Zacca and Matt catch up about their weeks leading into Melbourne Marathon. Zacca continues with his strength phase and goes into detail about how he's targeting that, with a solid 5k/4k/3k/2k session and an 8/7/6/5min session. Matt has a crack at the 'Portsea Fartlek', where they then discuss one of Australia's most influential coaches, Percy Cerutty. Matt also knocks some time off his 3 lap progression run of Frankston Reservoir, then finishes off the week with a 32km long run.

Zacca and Matt then hit up a listener question, 'Are there any specific sessions that you use to gauge precisely what pace or time you
should be able to run your particular event in?'. Detailing specific workouts, as well as how to use time trials as a gauge leading into races and to not always go all out in them to ensure enough time to recover before your big race.

Benji shares exciting stories from his travels abroad for his job in high-performance elite sport. Then, he dives into his recent racing success in New Zealand, including a huge personal best in the half marathon and another PB in the 10k, where he even achieved a negative split! Matt and Zacca are up and about following the news of Melbourne Marathon Festival to go ahead on 11th and 12th of December. They are also wary, but keen to push ahead. They detail their weeks, Matt pushing his mid week session back a day to ensure more recovery from feeling a bit flat. Zacca and Matt catch up about their post 5km TT weeks. Both decide it was a good opportunity to up the kilometers and get after some strength work. CR hunting season down on the Mornington Peninsula, so Matt incorporates some into his Tuesday workout. Then turns the clock back and reminisces about the old 3 lap progression of The Tan and hits a similar styled 3 lap progression run of Frankston Reservoir. Zacca pumps out a massive pickup run then gets the legs turning over in a 25min tempo to pump out a solid week.

Big result from Mel Cullen, a she nails her 10km time trial with a massive PB, setting off a huge smile from coach Madeline Heiner.

Listener question comes in looking at training mistakes made early on in Zacca and Matt's running. Zacca reflects on how he tried to ramp mileage up too quick and Matt discusses taking on too much quality too quickly.

Run2PB coach Sammy 'shoe dog' Mclean jumps on to answer some important shoe based questions. Discussing what makes a versatile shoe as well as giving some specific examples, how can a runner who trains in support shoes best choose a super shoe, how to transition into spikes and answers a listener question on how do you know when it's time for a new shoe.

Only for Zacca to finish with the exact same time! Who would’ve thought! Zacca had a tough week also with a calf niggle popping up, but managed to put it together for his time trial.

Zacca and Matt chat about a few of the result that came through for the Virtual Run2PB x TRC Yarraville 5k/10k TT. They then go through a random number generator to choose the winners of the New Balance 1080’s, with winners being announced on the podcast.
