| Red Shelter - Shurr Jr | 25 Apr 2025 | 01:01:17 | |
Frankie and Kelly Maxwell stop by the show to discuss how the band came together, their father and his love of music, their new EP, Red Shelter, sobriety, and more. ***** Shurr Jr is a family power trio that consists of a guitarist/vocalist, Nick Maxwell, Drums, Frankie Maxwell, and Kelly Maxwell on bass. The siblings’ father, Frank Maxwell, was an Omaha music legend who played guitar in the band Fifth of May in the ‘80s and ‘90s. No doubt, the apples didn’t fall far from the tree. They're a band made up of two brothers and a sister from Sioux Falls. Their father was a well-known musician in Omaha, but he died a few years ago. Since they were a very musical family, the kids decided to do a band as a tribute to their dad... The name "Shurr Jr." is a takeoff on one of their dad's favorite sayings, "Sure, Junior" as a replacement for "Yep, okay." The name of the EP is also a nod to their father, too... He wanted to name a band or album "Red Shelter," but he passed away before he could make that happen, so the kids in Shurr Jr. decided to name that album as another tribute to him. Musically, they take elements of Pixies, Elliott Smith, Husker Du, Avett Brothers, the Replacements, and Title Fight. This is the new single/video, "Ink": https://youtu.be/u1-p5WtdQ9o?si=lEal3FveTCWIiMcz ******* If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.com Upcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest

| Wilder All The Time - Chris Berardo | 18 Apr 2025 | 01:06:58 | |
This week on the show, Chris Berardo stops by the show to discuss his latest release, Wilder All the Time, touring, and more. ******** Chris Berardo is another artist whose life hasn't been the easiest. He was on a MAJOR upswing career-wise a decade ago before the dreaded cancer reared its ugly head. He was forced to abandon his music career to take care of himself, but now, after a decade of fighting, he is releasing his first album since... and it's a great one. A consummate and charismatic performer, Berardo's smoky voice and lived-in tales have charmed audiences from intimate acoustic shows to full-blown theater concerts, often opening for some of his idols, including The Doobie Brothers, The Marshall Tucker Band, Dickey Betts & Great Southern, and America. Chris Berardo and The Desberardos have just released their long-awaited fourth album, “Wilder All The Time”. It’s a deeply personal record that’s easily among the best works of his career! Chris talks about the record, playing live, and his travels from New York to Los Angeles to his current home in Norwalk, Connecticut. Watch this video for his new song "Take Me Back" which features pics and vids from his childhood: https://youtu.be/MDjJXH0ThW8?si=wdw3aYijfmIobIxe. | He/Hymn - Lenny Zenith | 14 Feb 2025 | 01:04:01
Lenny Zenith is more than an artist—he’s a trailblazer in the transgender community, whose life and music have broken boundaries and shattered stereotypes. His career, spanning decades, includes leading iconic bands like Jenifer Convertible, Tenterhooks, Minor Planets, Pop Comb, and RZA as well as his collaborations with industry legends like James Murphy and Wharton Tiers. Lenny’s genre-bending sound draws from his Cuban heritage, merging rock with jazz, electronica, and orchestral ballads, resulting in a body of work that’s as diverse as it is powerful. Lenny’s journey as a transgender man began in his youth in New Orleans, where he struggled to find acceptance while facing the challenges of adolescence. As a young transgender person, he found sanctuary at NOCCA (New Orleans Center for Creative Arts) and life-saving support from two compassionate doctors at Tulane Medical Center, who guided him through a difficult time. Yet, even with this support, Lenny’s path was filled with hurdles. Outed in high school by a classmate, Lenny was forced to leave McMain Magnet School (New Orleans), completing his education in isolation. Despite these challenges, his strength and determination led him to continue his musical career, though his transgender identity remained hidden from the public eye for many years. Fear for his safety kept him silent, but Lenny’s artistic expression always reflected his inner truth. Now, Lenny is no longer silent. In 2018, he fully embraced his identity with the release of What If The Sun, followed by the 2022 trans anthem “Where Is Safe,” a powerful response to the growing threats against transgender people, particularly youth, in the United States. With He/Hymn, Lenny steps forward once again—boldly sharing his story through music that speaks to the universal need for acceptance, love, and healing. With He/Hymn, Lenny Zenith’s artistic vision reaches new heights, showcasing both his growth as an artist and the assured power of his voice. It is a remarkable testament to his journey and his extraordinary talent. His music doesn’t just resonate with the transgender community—it speaks to anyone who has ever felt different, isolated, or in search of their true self. He/Hymn is a testament to his strength as both an artist and a transgender advocate, offering hope and a reminder that music, like identity, is a force of transformation and empowerment *** If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.com

| Chasing the Wrong Dream - Jerry Zehr | 26 Jan 2022 | 01:12:53 | |
Jerry and I talk about his journey from following his dream of being an actor to Hollywood only to realize it was the wrong dream. His true dream was on a more spiritual path. As I gave in to drugs and alcohol to medicate my emptiness inside, I finally realized my soul was dried up. I would be dead in five years if I didn't get out of this environment. I left the entertainment life and began a journey of self-exploration, studying the world religions, and traveling around the world. I have a new understanding of God and the Divine within us. I am a recovering perfectionist/worrier, learning how to grow into the fullness of who God created me to be. It has only taken 66 years, and I am still growing. | Reluctant Author - Joann Kedder | 24 Jan 2022 | 01:05:45
Joann and I talk about how she kept pushing away her dream of being an author, and how it kept coming back until she faced her destiny. Mid-life I took a leap and obtained my master's degree in creative writing, not as a career path but to prove I could do it. A publisher was interested in my thesis novella, "The Something That Happened in Pepperville," and I still didn't feel comfortable embracing this identity. Authors were smart and successful people and that wasn't me. The day after my first book signing, my husband and I moved 2,000 miles across the country to begin our next adventure. Every opportunity I thought I had waiting for me fell through. In addition to that lack of self, I now had no job, no friends, and no outlet. On top of that, a foot injury left me housebound for over a year. I went through counseling with a person who used ME as her therapist and spent hours sitting in the dark closet trying to feel connected to something. I convinced myself things would get better if I just sat there long enough. Two years later, my husband had a massive heart attack while hiking in the woods. His heart stopped six times, and as a result, he has permanent brain damage. While I was sitting in his room, listening to the machines pump and whir, I had a revelation: I've been pushing the notion that I'm a writer out of my head all of my life, waiting for the perfect moment. When would that be, exactly? It certainly wasn't happening inside the closet. Looking at my husband, I realized we have no guarantees and if that's who I truly was, the time to write was now. I spent his recovery writing my first novel, telling myself it was a one-and-done. The part of me I'd shoved away for so many years, spoke up and said, "I'm not going away now. This is who you are. Embrace it." Currently, I've published eight novels (two are award-winning novels) and have several more planned. Eventually, I was able to find a therapist and medication that kept me out of the dark space. Giving in to that inner voice and following the path laid out, I've finally found peace and my identity: I am an author. | I Lost On Jeopardy - Jim Flynn | 18 Jan 2022 | 01:11:05
Jim and I discuss how a brain tumor turned his world as a financial manager completely upside down. However, it end up offering him a new career as a published author in the process. I lost-bet it all on the Final Question and got it wrong Still-it was a Bucket List experience. my story was published in The Hartford Courant Sunday magazine. Response to the article was positive and I even got fan mail and calls from strangers. Many encouraged me to be a writer. Since I had three kids who wanted a better menu than just eating library paste, I continued my day job for the next 25 years. A few years ago I retired and began to write Be Sincere Even When You Don't Mean It, starting it on a flight from Hartford to Albuquerque when I couldn't find a book to read in the gift shop and resolved to write a book that I'd like to read. Be Sincere Even When You Don’t Mean It to Amazon. It does ask you if you want to publish under another name. Why would I want to do that? It takes a while for the book to get on the site, and when notified that it was now live I searched for it by Author’s name and: I noticed there were already five other Jim Flynns there–and there are seven James Flynns! And using my middle initial didn’t help either. After considering the alternatives, I’m publishing from now on under Jim Flynn Six, and I wish I was as good a golfer as Miss JL6 Find more info about Jim and his books here: Video of the interview is available here: https://youtu.be/PziGavBqohY Have a question or want to be a guest on the podcast email: dauna@bettertopodcast.com To see upcoming guests click here: https://www.dmneedom.com/better-topodcast Support the podcast here: https://www.patreon.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedom

| Santa's Rockin Band and My Musical Dream - Rich Chambers | 24 Dec 2021 | 01:15:13 | |
Rich and I discuss how he never gave up on his passion to play music. We also discuss his Christmas album. Chambers’ journey has not been without its bumps though. After completing high school, he was so sure he would be the next big thing, until countless nights playing in many cheesy dives, for at best a round or two of cheap draught beer, taught him otherwise. It was then he made an important, life-changing decision—he went back to school, which eventually led to a bachelor’s degree in English and later a master’s degree in Humanities. As Chambers so enthusiastically always says, “education rocks!” Following on the heels of his successful 2020 Christmas album, Chambers has been consistently and methodically releasing new original music throughout 2021. His socially conscious rocker, “I’m So Tired,” came out in January, accompanied by a hard-hitting video brimming with thought provoking social commentary (the video continues to receive accolades from film festivals around the globe). This was followed in the spring with his mid-tempo, love gone wrong, “Sorry Isn’t Good Enough.” His summertime release was “Summer Looks So Good On You,” a Beach Boys meets Katrina and the Waves fun and sing-alongable offering, which was followed by his fall release, “High School Can’t Last Forever,” a rocker that merges the sounds of Buddy Holly and Green Day to explore the notion of what really constitutes youth and innocence. For winter 2021/22, Chambers has released “I Wonder,” an infectious, almost bubble gum pop/rock song that Chambers likes to simply call a “musical guilty pleasure.” ****** Video of the interview is available here: https://youtu.be/JOFRTBC0Xs8 Have a question or want to be a guest on the podcast email: dauna@bettertopodcast.com To see upcoming guests click here: https://www.dmneedom.com/better-topodcast Support the podcast here: https://www.patreon.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedom ©2021 Better To...Podcast with D. H. J. and I discuss her choice to go for her MBA in writing at a New Age college even though it was out of her comfort zone. I have been writing since I was nine years old, always desiring to create stories that spark emotions in the reader, and inspire them to look at life a little differently. I have a Master's degree in Writing, and I know the depths of what the human heart can handle. I have a love for stories that show the messiness of life because I've also endured that messiness. I believe that fiction often shows us the truth in better and more effective ways than actual true stories. I want to give people stories that are truthful, full of heart, and that is engaging. | Walking Away For Self Preservation - Sharon Valenti | 22 Nov 2021 | 01:05:50
Sharon tells us about how she was in a situation she knew she needed to get out of, but wasn’t certain how she could. She talked about what finally gave her the push to make the changes and what she does now to help others. We all have a mission in life we’re born to do. My purpose is to spread peace throughout the world. As a result of my own trials and tribulations in life (from alcoholic parents, sexual abuse, death of my son, heroin addict sister, etc.), and a determination to live a life of peaceful thoughts and genuine happiness, and accomplishing that, helped me to become an expert in this field. Now I show others how simple it is to make this change in their own life. They turn their unhappy relationships into ones that feel like chocolate for the soul. | Ending Child Marriages - Bongai Mhloyl | 01 Nov 2021 | 00:59:09
Originally from Zimbabwe, Bongai has witnessed the “girl child” being sold into marriage at a very young age (some as young as 10) to men in their 60s and 70s. End Child Marriages focuses on education in African countries so that girls are not forced into marriage. Education equips them with the tools necessary for success. American-African Youth Leadership Foundation (AAYLF) founded in 2010, is a nonprofit organization, 501©3 registered in Pennsylvania MISSION: We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving vulnerable girls from poverty ending the risk of early child marriage. WHY DO WE DO WHAT WE DO? When a girl is married before the age of 18, she and her family are more likely to be poor, uneducated, and unhealthy. In Zimbabwe, more than 50% of girls that are married before age 18, face an end to their education, barriers to vocational and life skills, and increased risks of domestic violence and sexual diseases. Not only is child marriage illegal, but it is also a direct violation of human rights, one that can be corrected through education. LONG-TERM IMPACT: We hope to challenge the rigid cultural norms that promote gender discrimination and child marriages in Zimbabwe. Currently, we have sixty (60) girls in our program saved from child marriages. Our goal for 2021 is to save 100 girls from child marriages and keep them in school. https://www.facebook.com/EndChildMarriagesOrg/ https://twitter.com/no2childbrides https://www.linkedin.com/in/bongai-mhloyi-23a92096/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOAV1n0-Xbgu9_fUp8mio-w ©2021 Better To...Podcast with D. | A World So Kind - Wonderly | 20 Dec 2024 | 01:03:56
This week the Portland-based duo, Wonderly stopped by to discuss their latest album Wolves/ We also talked about the Low Bar Chorale, A new German Opera, and so much more. Jim Brunberg was a touring song and dance man for 12 years with the hugely successful rock/harmony/acoustic duo (and sometimes quintet) Box Set, touring with acts ranging from Dave Matthews to Huey Lewis, through the 90s. In 2000, Jim opened a recording studio, turning to the recording and composing world to satisfy his constant hunger for music. He produced and engineered dozens of records for many artists (Storm Large, Kristin Hersh, John Wesley Harding, and countless Portland-based bands) and released a few solo albums before converting the studios into a world-class music venue (Mississippi Studios). This spawned a few larger venues (Revolution Hall and Polaris Hall) where Jim personally built the stages, much of the seating and decor of a family of venues he still co-owns with his business partner Kevin Cradock. Ben Landsverk is an American composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist, based in Portland, OR, whose work focuses on social change through music. Hailed as a “prominent Portland composer” (Bloomberg Magazine) and “a unique musical talent” (Willamette Week), he is best known for his work as one half of the duo Wonderly, with musical partner Jim Brunberg. An active session musician, Landsverk has worked with such musical luminaries as Father John Misty, Pink Martini, Smokey Robinson, Van Dyke Parks, Storm Large, and Ruby Friedman Orchestra. From 2003-2015, he was a collaborator and music director with avant-garde performance artist Holcombe Waller and performed at such festivals as Under The Radar (NYC), Festival de Teatro de Curitiba (Brazil), Queer Zagreb (Croatia), Brooklyn Academy of Music (NYC), and Centre Pompidou (Metz and Paris, France).

| No To People Pleasing - Margaret Ghielmetti | 18 Oct 2021 | 01:03:25 | |
Margaret and I set down and discuss her life as the perfect wife and how she thought that was the only role she could have. One day, something changed, and it was a blessing that her husband supported her by taking her power back. It is a story that we can all learn something from. Ghielmetti's solo show, “Fierce,” is about reclaiming her creative expression in mid-life . . . and she wrote Brave(ish): A Memoir of a Recovering Perfectionist to inspire readers that it’s never too late to learn to live our own lives – if we dare to let go of outdated roles and rules we thought kept us safe. She also hopes to entertain readers with her adventures (and misadventures) abroad . . . and to share what each country taught her (that she never would have learned on her own.) Genuine connection and deeper conversations with other humans is what drives Margaret’s art.
