"Belly Button Musings" is a podcast for anyone who wants to experience whimsical wisdom pulled from the navel. Each episode looks at an aspect of life chosen through intuition and experienced through life. The belly button is seen as spiritual and symbolic in many traditions representing a connection to the cosmic, the universe and ancestral wisdom. In yoga and Eastern philosophies, the navel is associated with the vital energy centre known as Manipura Chakra.    We share stories and gently explore life themes to improve our relationship to our lives, appreciating we are not alone in our experiences. We contemplate through the navel, with the energy of a light shower of rain, reflections and learnings to provide a new awareness and insight into how a life could be lived.

Practical Ways to Cultivate Appreciation Daily with Alicia Karabinos

Episode 3

lundi 3 novembre 2025Duration 33:38

In today's episode, Harinder holds her very first interview with fellow podcast host and friend, Alicia Karabinos. They focus on the concept of 'appreciation' and explore the differences between appreciation and gratitude. They also highlight the importance of slowing down to notice the beauty around us, drawing on personal anecdotes and philosophical insights, including the ancient Greek concepts of Kronos and Kairos time. KEY TAKEAWAYS Appreciation is about being present and noticing the richness of life in the moment, while gratitude is reflective, often focused on past experiences. Appreciation serves as a grounding process that can enhance our overall well-being. In a fast-paced world, taking the time to appreciate our surroundings and experiences can lead to a deeper connection with life. This practice can lower stress and improve mental and physical health. Recognising and acknowledging our current challenges can serve as a precursor to appreciation. This awareness can help us find value even in difficult situations, fostering resilience. When one person embodies appreciation, it can positively influence those around them. This shared energy can create a collective atmosphere of positivity and connection. Simple practices, such as taking a moment to breathe and notice our surroundings, can cultivate appreciation in daily life. Engaging fully in experiences, like savouring food or drink, can enhance our ability to appreciate the present moment. BEST MOMENTS "Appreciation is essentially about making our lives richer in all ways, both good and bad. It can protect us against regrets." "Living in appreciation is a lot easier when things are going well, but they are harder to experience when we are going through challenges in life." "Acknowledging where you're at in a challenge is almost like hitting a pause button, and that's where the beginning of awareness comes in." "Appreciation becomes even more important as we get older, especially with everything that's happening in the world." "When we appreciate, it feels like we're bringing all parts of ourselves back together and we're whole again in that second." Groundhog Day Reflections: Battling the Ego in a Sea of Uncertainty

Episode 2

lundi 3 novembre 2025Duration 13:16

Today, Harinder explores the concept of "unbecoming," a transformative process that often arises during times of personal tragedy or significant life changes. Harinder reflects on her own experiences of grappling with feelings of unworthiness, anxiety, and the struggle to navigate the unknown. Through the metaphor of spiritual sloughing, she discusses the shedding of old identities and beliefs, ultimately leading to a more authentic self. KEY TAKEAWAYS Unbecoming is a process that occurs during significant life changes or tragedies, offering an opportunity for deep personal transformation rather than something to fix. The journey through loss often involves a change curve, including stages like denial, anger, sadness, and eventually curiosity, with no set timeline for progression. During periods of uncertainty, the ego can create internal conflict, as it struggles to navigate the unknown and clings to familiar identities, leading to feelings of disorientation. Staying present in the moment can provide balance and clarity, allowing individuals to observe their thoughts and feelings without getting lost in anxiety about the future or sadness about the past. The process of unbecoming involves shedding accumulated beliefs and identities, leading to a return to one's core values and a more authentic self, despite the discomfort it may bring. BEST MOMENTS "It's an opportunity for us to transform. To come out of the other side very different from how we went in." "I felt I was free floating with nothing to hold on to, no handles, no hooks, nothing to push against." "It's really a question of returning to who we actually are at our core, our values being tested and refined." "When something like this happens... to just be with that process is to ride it out, not to fight it." "There's nothing to fix; we're just being shown things that have been hidden from view." The Stories We Tell Ourselves

Episode 6

lundi 3 novembre 2025Duration 39:56

In this episode, Harinder and Alicia look at how limiting beliefs, often rooted in childhood experiences, shape our perceptions and behaviours throughout life. Through personal anecdotes, including Alicia's experience with an authoritative teacher and Harinder's journey in the workplace, they discuss the importance of self-inquiry and observation in recognising these narratives. KEY TAKEAWAYS The stories we tell ourselves often stem from deep-seated limiting beliefs, such as feelings of inadequacy or not belonging. Recognising these narratives is the first step toward reframing them. Personal experiences, especially from childhood, shape our current beliefs and behaviours. Reflecting on these moments can help us understand the origins of our limiting stories and how they continue to influence our lives. Engaging with trusted individuals can provide valuable insights into our patterns and behaviours. Their feedback can help us identify blind spots and challenge the narratives we hold about ourselves. We have the ability to change our stories and narratives at any point in our lives. By recognising that our past does not define us, we can choose to create new, empowering stories that align with our true potential. Acknowledging and accepting our past experiences, including the stories we tell ourselves, is crucial for personal growth. Practicing self-compassion allows us to let go of negative narratives and embrace a more positive and hopeful outlook on life. BEST MOMENTS "I had been living in a lie, thinking I wasn't capable. When I really was, I knew that I had done this." "When we dig into the stories that we believe that are on repeat play, there's a deeper message underneath." "It can take years to be in a position where, to even ask ourselves the question, why does the same thing keep happening?" "We are so connected to the circumstance that we are one with it. If I'm not enough, then I identify, well, I'm personally not enough." "Our stories can change. We can see our stories and we can choose to define ourselves differently." How Spending Time In Nature Revives Our Spirit

Episode 4

lundi 3 novembre 2025Duration 09:08

Today, Harinder explores the profound benefits of spending time in nature and its impact on our well-being. Drawing on insights from an old mentor, she reflects on how modern life has distanced us from our natural roots, leading to feelings of anxiety and disconnection. Through vivid descriptions of engaging with plants, trees, and the elements, Harinder invites us to slow down, breathe, and appreciate the beauty of the natural world. KEY TAKEAWAYS Spending time in nature helps individuals reconnect with their roots, alleviating feelings of sickness, anxiety, and depression that can arise from urban living. Nature allows us to access our intuition and connect with the quantum field, encouraging a state of presence that can lead to insights and clarity. Engaging with nature, such as tree hugging or walking barefoot on grass, grounds us and promotes relaxation, helping to release burdens and negative energy. Observing the details of nature -like the colours and textures of plants - can inspire stillness and a sense of connection to everything around us, enhancing our emotional well-being. Interacting with nature creates an energy exchange, where we can discharge negative energy and recharge ourselves, leading to a greater sense of self and well-being. BEST MOMENTS "We're like leopards originally from the jungle, and we've moved to cities. The longer we are away from nature, we become sick, withdrawn, depressed, anxious." "Spending time in nature allows us to connect back with the infinite, the divine." "When we connect with something beyond ourselves, we leave an imprint of us, and it leaves an imprint of itself on us." "The world is always rushing and we forget what it's like just to be, to just exist, to take it all in." "Just remember what it was like as a child to look up and imagine the possibilities and allow yourselves those moments." Little Life vs Big Life

Episode 5

lundi 3 novembre 2025Duration 27:33

In this episode, Harinder is joined once again by her friend Alicia Karabinos to explore the concept of "a little life versus a big life." They discuss the importance of living consciously and the impact of societal expectations on our personal journeys. They emphasise the significance of focusing on small, meaningful actions and the ripple effects these can have on others. KEY TAKEAWAYS Life challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, can serve as catalysts for reflection and personal growth, prompting individuals to reassess their values and priorities. Small acts of kindness and connection can have a profound impact on others, highlighting that even seemingly insignificant moments can create ripples of joy and meaning in people's lives. The concept of Kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with gold, serves as a metaphor for embracing our brokenness and imperfections, allowing us to create something beautiful and stronger from our experiences. Finding joy in personal pursuits and nurturing oneself is essential. By focusing on what brings happiness, individuals can inspire others and create a positive ripple effect in their communities. BEST MOMENTS "Are we doing it consciously? Are we consciously choosing life to happen to us or life to happen for us?" "COVID gave us the opportunity to kind of stop, to focus on what is it that I'm really looking to accomplish in my life." "Just know that you being a mom, that's monumental. That is a drop that has ripple effects, not only throughout your life, their life, but throughout the world." "Sometimes it's necessary because it's just a regrouping. It's the way we define that process that we're going through." "Fill your own cup first. You're worth it. You deserve it. The world needs it." Navigating the Unknown

Episode 7

lundi 10 novembre 2025Duration 44:13

In today's episode, Harinder sits down with her friend Alicia as they discuss the complex and often challenging experience of 'navigating the unknown' in life. Harinder begins by sharing her personal journey, describing it as a 'rollercoaster' and a process of 'stripping bare of identities and labels' as she grapples with uncertainty. The conversation explores the struggle between looking to the past for a template or fearing the future, and the power of embracing the present moment. KEY TAKEAWAYS Navigating the unknown often involves letting go of old identities and labels ('stripping myself bare of identities and labels') that no longer serve you, a process that can feel like being 'washed clean' but ultimately leads you back to your true core. The present moment is the only true anchor you have when facing the unknown, as dwelling on the past (for a template) or the future (with anxiety) prevents you from seeing new possibilities. Reframe the unknown from a terrifying, dark experience to a 'pool of possibilities', which encourages curiosity, play, and a willingness to explore different sides of yourself. Difficult or unsettling moments are not a waste of time or a sign of failure, but rather 'stepping stones' that lead you to new opportunities and a greater appreciation for your life and what you are truly capable of. A crucial part of navigating life's uncertainties is practicing self-love, self-acceptance, and forgiveness, allowing your "whole self" to be present, flaws and all, without holding back. BEST MOMENTS "I find I always use the term navigating the unknown, which says so much because I'm still trying to find my way through it." "The idea of sitting in the space where we are deeply unsettled it is a core part of me being able to navigate the unknown." "I think the process has been a series of stepping stones to get to where I am now." "It is an invitation for all of us, all of our self, to play in that, to play in the unknown, so we have a full relationship with the unknown." "That is part of our beauty. That we all have our different colours of our personality." HOST BIO I am Harinder. Empowering Others Without Sacrificing Yourself

Episode 8

lundi 17 novembre 2025Duration 13:09

In this episode, Harinder explores the concept of 'giving from empty', reflecting on the motivations behind helping others when we ourselves are depleted. Drawing from personal experiences, Harinder discusses the challenges of being a people pleaser and the tendency to prioritise others' needs over our own. She emphasises the importance of self-care and the need to recognize our own emotional, spiritual, and physical capacities before extending help. KEY TAKEAWAYS Helping others can stem from a desire to please or an inability to say no, often leading to neglecting one's own needs. It's important to assess whether the motivation to help is genuine or driven by personal emptiness. When assistance is given without empowering the other person, it can create a cycle of dependency. This not only disempowers the individual seeking help but can also lead to feelings of burden for the helper. Prioritising personal needs is crucial. Before offering help, it's essential to check if you have the emotional, mental, and physical capacity to assist others. Learning to say no is a vital part of self-care. Instead of solving others' problems, providing a listening ear can empower them to find their own solutions. Encouraging self-reliance fosters personal growth for both parties. Genuine support comes from a place of abundance rather than emptiness. By taking care of oneself first, individuals can become more resourceful and effective in helping others without compromising their own well-being. BEST MOMENTS "I had an inability to say no. It was about the other person more so than about myself." "By helping out somebody else, even though we might be running on empty, we may already have negative feelings." "If we begin by setting an intention that we're going to empower them, we're not going to do something for them." "What remains in us is this hole, is an unfulfilled need and the only person who can actually understand what that is and help us to fill it is ourselves." "It is better in the longer term to help someone to help themselves." Infinity In a Water Drop

Episode 10

lundi 1 décembre 2025Duration 10:23

In this episode, Harinder explores the profound symbolism of a water droplet, reflecting on its infinite journey and the wisdom it embodies. Through vivid imagery, Harinder invites listeners to appreciate the beauty and complexity of water, emphasizing how it mirrors life's possibilities and connections.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Reflections and Perspectives: A water droplet serves as a metaphor for the reflections of light and darkness in life, highlighting that things are not always as they appear and that there are multiple perspectives to consider. Time and Awareness: The experience of observing a water droplet can alter one's perception of time, creating a sense of "gloopy" time where infinite insights and awareness can emerge in a brief moment. Connection and Community: The journey of a water droplet symbolizes the interconnectedness of life, emphasizing the importance of belonging and the impact of individual experiences on the greater whole. Transformation and Continuity: Water's ability to change forms—liquid, gas, solid—illustrates the idea of transformation and continuity in life, suggesting that endings are merely transitions to new states of being. Intuition and Intent: Engaging with water can enhance intuition and connection, as it is suggested that setting intentions can influence the structure of water, highlighting its potential as a medium for personal insight and growth. BEST MOMENTS "When looking at a water droplet, time feels different. The word I use is gloopy." "A whole lifetime can be lived in one droplet. As it moves through the air, it changes constantly." "Water is life, and so much more. Life-giving, we need it, but also how powerful it is." "It may be absorbed into the atmosphere, absorbed into the universe; it's still there just in a different shape." "If we can be anything today, let's try and emulate what it would be like to be a water drop."
