Being Home With a Biophilic Designer, Feng Shui Expert, and Interior Designer (Alejandra Brady)13 Mar 202300:35:24

Today on the show we have Alejandra Brady, a biophilic designer, feng shui expert, interior designer, and author.

Alejandra explains how these three modalities — biophilic design, feng shui, and interior design — support each other in the world of home design and decor.

In this conversation, you’ll learn about biophilic design, which Alejandra describes as the modern feng shui. It’s about bringing nature back into the manmade environment.

She shares actionable tips on how to implement biophilic design within your home — no matter your budget or where you live.

Alejandra also shares tips on how to amplify the wealth and career areas of our homes through the trifecta of, you guessed it, feng shui, biophilic design, and interior design. She has great ideas on how the items we use in these spaces can do double or triple duty, covering all the bases of these three modalities. Also, you’ll want to hear what she doesn’t recommend we keep in our career center; she shares ideas for beneficial crystals to place under our pillows or beds; plus, she tells us her top three favorite feng shui cures she uses wherever she goes.

Being Home With a Home Organizing Expert (Megan Golightly of Simplified)06 Mar 202300:26:58

Today on the show we have Meg Golightly, home organizing expert, and founder of Simplified.

For Meg, home organizing is not just about putting things in their place.

She says, "My interest in home organization has evolved from a lifelong fascination with how our brains work reinforced by my degree in psychology and my ongoing interest in neuroscience.”

She believes we all have reasons as to why we hang on to things. And everybody struggles with clutter. Everybody. However, there’s a cost to clutter.

And that we can’t get to where we want to be until we let go.

And so, Meg does more than just show us how to organize — she goes deeper. There’s one important step she believes we all must do before we organize, and she shares it in this conversation.

She also offers tips on where and how to start in the organizing process, as well as the three questions she has her clients answer before starting the organizing process.

We also talk about how find her favorite organizing tools; why she creates “towns” for her stuff at home; and finally, she shares expert ways to organize a pantry. We all know how much we love seeing a well-organized pantry!

If you’re ready to make space in your home — both literally and figuratively — this conversation for you.

Your Work Desk Needs These Feng Shui and Aromatherapy Ideas 30 Jan 202300:08:46

If you’re someone who spends a lot of time at your work desk, it makes sense that you would want your desk to be set up in the most supportive, creative, and prosperous way.

Of course, you want to consider the ergonomics of your desk so you can feel comfortable and keep your neck, back, and wrist pain at bay while working.

But this conversation is not about the ergonomics of your desk – it’s about the energy of your desk and workspace. Specifically, energy that’s created by employing feng shui and aromatherapy.

First, I talk with feng shui expert Amanda Gibby Peters about using feng shui when setting up your work desk.

Then, I talk with aromatherapist Amy Galper about how to use therapeutic essential oils at our desk.

At the end of this episode, you’ll have some concrete ideas to try when setting up your desk so you can create the most positive, supportive, and dare I say lovely energy while working.

Being Home With the Head of Editorial & Creative at Google Shopping (Aya Kanai)23 Jan 202300:31:24

Today on the show we have Aya Kanai, Head of Editorial and Creative for Google Shopping.

Did you know that people shop with Google more than 1 billion times per day?

This is one of the many reasons why I was thrilled to talk with Aya (formerly an editor/director in fashion and beauty) because she has an inside look at shopping trends and habits for 2023 in the home decor and design space, and beyond. It’s interesting to hear what people are searching for right now – and what’s important to them when deciding where they want to put their money (especially for Gen Z and Gen Alpha).

In this conversation, Aya offers insight on the Google shopping experience, including Google’s tools and filters such as 3D imagery and AR. Doesn’t the idea of taking 3D imagery of furniture and putting it in your space to see how it looks in your home or backyard before you buy sound so helpful?

Aya shares some personal thoughts on her own home, including her decor style; what she can’t live without and what brings her great joy when she’s at home; and what she loves most about New York City.

Aya and I agree that how we shop for ourselves – what we choose to put in our homes or on our bodies – is not just about buying things to amass stuff; it’s about purchasing products that help express who we are in the world. Every shopping decision we make is an opportunity to create, support, and tell our personal stories.

Being Home With The AstroTwins and 2023 Astrology (Ophira Edut)09 Jan 202300:32:41

Today on the Being Home With Hunker podcast we have Ophira Edut, one half of the AstroTwins.

The AstroTwins are professional astrologers and twin sisters, Ophira and Tali Edut. As authors, the official astrologers for ELLE magazine, and the matchmakers on Amazon Prime Video’s show “Cosmic Love,” their work reaches millions. They have a very approachable and fun way in which they offer information on our horoscopes.

As they say, their mission is to keep “bringing the stars down to earth,” interpreting ancient wisdom with a practical twist.

Ophi and Tali recently released their latest book: The AstroTwins’ 2023 Horoscope: The Complete Yearly Astrology Guide for Every Zodiac Sign. We talk about their book at the top of this episode and why they are dubbing 2023 as the year of “what if?”

In this conversation we talk about how this new year is a year of restructuring – and she explains the two big astrological events that are happening in the first quarter of the year.

She shares how the Law of Attraction is making a comeback this year – where the thoughts that we have will show up quickly and will materialize in the physical universe. So, do your vision boards everyone!

We discuss the Day of the Miracles – which day in 2023 has the overall energy of hope. Probably a good day to mark your calendar if you’re thinking of launching something new.

Also, on the home front, you’re thinking about moving, or want to sell your home, Ophi divulges the months when not to do it this year. She also talks about the best months for organizing your finances and getting any home repairs done.

And we talk Feng Shui Astrology: How we can work with the element that’s specific to our birth year to help support us in our homes – and how each element has its own style.

Being Home With Leanne Ford and the Freedom to Create [BEST OF]26 Dec 202200:29:54

Hi — I'm Laurie Gunning Grossman, host of Being Home With Hunker. For this last episode of the year, I wanted to replay a conversation I had with interior designer, HGTV star, furniture designer, and author Leanne Ford about the launch of her new print magazine, Feel Free.

So why this particular podcast conversation?

As we enter into the new year, many of us have dreams, goals, and intentions of things we want to create or experience in the year ahead.

It’s a moment of great momentum—and I think that what Leanne represents, and what her magazine represents, is the freedom that comes when we give ourselves permission to take chances, to say yes, to be okay with not being perfect. Like, it’s okay to make mistakes … as long as we’re trying.

As she says in this conversation, “What's this perfection thing we're all aiming for?"

She says, “Raise your hand if you've done it. Who's perfect? So let's just cool it.” She goes on to recite a quote from the John Steinbeck book East of Eden which is, "Now that you don't have to be perfect, you can be good."

So, if you’ve wanting to try something new or to take a chance on an idea that you’ve been sitting on, no matter what it is, listen to this episode. It’s pure inspiration. And then, after you’re done, take one step in that direction of your dream or creative idea.

Being Home With an Herbalist on the Power of Plants (Wooden Spoon Herbs Founder Lauren Haynes)18 Dec 202200:29:57

Today on the Being Home With Hunker podcast, host Laurie Gunning Grossman is talking with Lauren Haynes, the founder of Wooden Spoon Herbs.

If there’s one thing that Lauren knows, it’s herbalism. She started delving into the world of herbs years ago through tinkering, and trial and error before she created Wooden Spoon Herbs. She started in her Tennessee kitchen and sold her products at an Appalachian Mountain farmers’ market stall – and then over the course of years, her company grew.

Lauren has said that she has always found nourishment in nature, and that when it comes to plants, she sees possibility; she sees the mystical aspects of them, and their art form. Lauren believes that herbs are a powerful adjunct to conventional medicine.

In this conversation, she shares ways that we can boost our wellbeing as we move into a new year. We talk about her time living in the Appalachian Mountains in a rural town, her thoughts on wildcrafting (which is harvesting from the wild), and how we can use indoor plants for medicinal or nutritive reasons.

Be sure to listen to the end of this episode where we’ll share a code for you to receive 15% off your order at Wooden Spoon Herbs.

Being Home With Cheese Board Experts (Lady & Larder Founders Sarah and Boo)12 Dec 202200:30:01

Today on the Being Home With Hunker podcast Laurie Gunning Grossman is talking with cheese and charcuterie board experts, Sarah Simms and Boo Simms Hendrix from Lady & Larder.

Lady & Larder is a boutique cheese shop in Santa Monica, California. If you’re unfamiliar with their boards, you really need to go to their website and to see their cheese, charcuterie, fruit, and vegetable boards, which are true pieces of edible art.

Sarah and Boo, who are twin sisters, grew up in the world of hospitality and in a family who connected over cooking and sharing meals. Now with Lady & Larder, they say that they’re storytellers — the way they sell cheese is by telling the stories of the humans who made them. For them, this is a huge piece of the pie.

In this conversation, they share expert tips on how people can build their own cheese and charcuterie boards, including how much food you’ll need, and why it’s important to source locally and seasonally when possible. They also share some thoughts on pairings — which drinks pair best with certain cheeses, and the board trend that they are excited about right now.

Oh, and we also touch upon a hot button topic: how we should be wrapping and storing our cheese.

Being Home With Clutterbug's Organizing Expert (Cass Aarssen)05 Dec 202200:33:46

Today on the Being Home With Hunker podcast we have organizing expert Cass Aarssen.

Cass is the creator of the home organizing business Clutterbug, she’s the author of four best-selling organizing books, she’s the host of the Clutterbug podcast, and host of HGTV’s “Hot Mess House.”

Suffice to say, Cass knows all about organizing.

In this podcast conversation, Cass talks about how excess physical belongings drain us and add to our overwhelm — emotionally, physically, and spiritually. And we may not fully understand how much they drain us until we start decluttering.

As Cass shares, the first step to getting organized is letting go. She’s seen the life transformations that come when we are, as she says, brave enough to let go of physical things.

You’ll love her helpful tips on how to declutter, including why she keeps bins at the bottom of closets, which space has the biggest impact on your mindset when you keep clean and clutter-free, and you’ll want to hear her process on how she personally declutters.

Being Home With an Interior Designer Transforming Old Homes (Victoria Sass)28 Nov 202200:35:43

Today on the Being Home With Hunker podcast we have interior designer Victoria Sass.

Victoria is the founder of Prospect Refuge Studio. She was named one of Architectural Digest’s 2022 New American Voices, highlighting rising designers who are “shaking up American interiors.”

Based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Victoria and her design studio focus on transforming old homes for young families.

Her design aesthetic is a mix of California, Scandinavia, and midwestern soul.

Through her work, Victoria likes to amplify the stories that our homes tell. Part of her talent lies in world-building, in using these stories to encourage people tap into an emotional mindset and get out of the literal when designing their homes.

You’ll love what Victoria has to say on the topic of interior design, including her tips on client and interior designer relationships, her favorite materials to mix when designing a room, and which items she likes to start planning a room around.

Being Home With Gratitude (Guests Share Personal Thoughts)21 Nov 202200:15:07

It’s the season of giving and I've been thinking a lot about thankfulness.

Gratitude, what we’re personally grateful for, is different for each of us — because we each have our own life experiences, our own lens on how we see our world, both macro and micro.

But why is expressing our gratitude daily so important or helpful?

According to Harvard Health, giving thanks can make you happier. That in “positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.”

Perhaps you’ve heard that saying: “What you appreciate, appreciates.”

Or, where your attention goes, energy flows.

So, it makes sense as to why focusing on the things we’re grateful for is powerful.

I’m often curious what fills a person with appreciation – because within that I find inspiration. And so, for this podcast episode I reached out to some of our past guests to find out what they are grateful for, and I’m sharing it here with you.

Being Home With a Feng Shui Expert on Elevating Our Home’s Energy (Amanda Gibby Peters)14 Nov 202200:36:09

“Feng shui is happening whether you endorse it or not, whether you believe it or not. Because if you have stuff, if you have space, it is happening all around you. So, it doesn’t care whether you believe in it or not. And again, this is my invitation, get curious about where your house can help you out, because it can.” -- Amanda Gibby Peters

Today on the show we have feng shui expert Amanda Gibby Peters.

Amanda is the creator and founder of Simple Shui and has been teaching feng shui techniques for over a decade. This includes teaching people how to become their own feng shui consultant, and her House Therapy Certification Program which empowers people to see their homes as living, breathing entities. Basically, she’s training us to see our homes as another family member!

In this conversation, we talk about how everything is energy, and everything is connected – this includes what we have in our homes or what’s happening in and around our homes. These things affect us.

Do you have leaks? Clutter? Something broken? Amanda encourages us to look at how these things are affecting us in other ways, such as financially, with our health, our relationships, our career… you get what I mean.

Amanda is here to drop some serious feng shui knowledge, tips, and advice – you’ll definitely come away with something tangible to help elevate the energy in your space and therefore in your life as well. Honestly, I was so thrilled with this conversation, and I think you will be, too.

Being Home With a Design Book Author (Nina Freudenberger LIVE at Hunker House)07 Nov 202201:00:21

This past October, host Laurie Gunning Grossman (@laurie.gunning.grossman) welcomed Nina Freudenberger to Hunker House in Venice, CA for a live recording of the Being Home With Hunker podcast.

Nina is no stranger to the podcast. We first had her on the show in 2021, and after that conversation ended, we realized that had even more questions we wanted to ask her. So, we were delighted when she agreed to come back to Hunker, yet this time IRL and in front of a design-loving group.

If you scroll through Instagram or Pinterest, chances are you’ve seen Nina’s books “Surf Shack” or “Bibliostyle” styled on a coffee table or bookshelf. (Her third book on mountain houses will be available in fall 2023.)

As the founder of Freudenberger Design Studio, she is known for her impeccable taste seen through her residential and hospitality projects. (We highly recommend a visit to White Water Cambria or San Luis Creek Lodge if you’re in California!)

Nina is a wealth of information and inspiration for anyone who loves design, wants to write design books, or is interested in an interior design career or side hustle.

Being Home With Ghost Stories (Kimo Kepano)31 Oct 202200:36:10

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host Laurie Gunning Grossman (@laurie.gunning.grossman) talks with Hawaiian light seer Kimo Kepano.

On Kimo’s Instagram and TikTok accounts, Kimo has been commenting on videos that feature paranormal activity — people seeing ghosts, knives flying through kitchens, hair being pulled when no one is in the room… you name it. He does these blind reactions where he watches videos that people send to him and then tunes into whether it’s truth or fiction. And you guys, some of these videos really are true. (Like the knife being thrown across the kitchen by spirit energy!)

As a light seer, Kimo can see what a lie looks like. This is how he knows if these ghosts videos are real or fake. He says that lies literally look like something — the colors are different, they have a different vibration — and so does truth. So Kimo can see it, hear it, and feel it. How cool is that?!

Kimo explains more in this conversation and shares some real spooky stories (as well as a sweet spirit story), so you’ll want to listen all the way through!

Being Home With an Interiors Expert (Hilary Robertson)24 Oct 202200:27:53

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host Laurie Gunning Grossman (@laurie.gunning.grossman) chats with interiors stylist Hilary Robertson.

Hilary is an interiors expert — so that means that she’s involved with creative direction, art direction, interior styling, product development (have you seen her gorgeous chain links you can find online at Bloomist?!)… and she is an author of five books, including “Monochrome Home” and her latest “Nomad at Home” which examines the influence of travel on home design. Her client list is vast, and includes Crate & Barrel, West Elm, Town and Country, Vogue Living, and Metropolitan Home, to name a few.

And in addition to all those “hats” that Hilary wears, she is also the style director for Leanne Ford’s new magazine FEEL FREE. (If you want to know more about that magazine, listen to the latest interview with Leanne Ford.)

In this conversation, Hilary talks about her work with FEEL FREE, her latest book “Nomad at Home,” the impact of travel in her life, and her styling rules.

Being Home With FEEL FREE Magazine Creator (Leanne Ford)17 Oct 202200:30:02

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman chats with Leanne Ford.

You most likely know Leanne as an interior designer, or as an HGTV star (Restored by the Fords and Home Again With the Fords), or as furniture designer in partnership with Crate & Barrel. But now Leanne has a new title to add to her name: print magazine creator.

Leanne recently launched a quarterly print magazine on art and home design called Feel Free. If you follow Leanne, you’ll agree that this name is just so fitting for who she is and what she represents.

In This Episode We Talk About:

  • The FEEL FREE magazine — what Leanne also calls a workbook — with the hope that people write on it, rip on it, put it on their wall, and get it messy!
  • Creating the magazine to expose people to artists, art, and to inspire people to live freely. (Because being perfect just isn’t a thing.)
  • The generosity of the artists who shared their artwork with Leanne to feature in the magazine (and for all of us to rip out!) – along with their tips on how to create art.
  • This magazine is for everyone, no matter what you want to create, whether it’s curating an online shop or writing that book you’ve been dreaming of.
  • Where Leanne gets her biggest inspiration (hint: it’s not design).
  • How the freedom to create is contagious.
  • How her 3 ½ year old daughter is in her prime creative time — and how inspiring it is to Leanne. (And how her launching her magazine is no surprise that it’s aligning with her daughter’s creativity.)
  • How much her spiritual life plays into her creativity, and how what she creates does not dictate her worth.
  • Working with interior stylist and author Hilary Robertson, who is the Style Director at FEEL FREE.

Being Home With a Celebrity Nutritionist (Kelly LeVeque)10 Oct 202200:29:30

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman talks with Kelly LeVeque.

Kelly wears many hats: she is a celebrity holistic nutritionist and wellness expert, an author, and podcast host of Be Well By Kelly. Perhaps you’ve heard of her and her uber-popular Fab 4 Smoothie. (She and her smoothie recipes have a big celebrity fan base.) I have her book “Body Love” and I can personally attest to the many great recipes, thoughtful advice, and scientific-based knowledge.

In our conversation, Kelly shares how to make her famous smoothie — as well as the science behind why it works. She also talks about the big renovation she and her family have been going through as they design their first home, and she has helpful ideas on how to “green” a home, from the paint to the furniture to the glue that holds her floors together.

Take a listen to the episode, and then be sure to check out Kelly’s protein powder, her books, and her guides and course. See below for links to everything.

In This Episode Kelly Talks About:

  • What the Fab 4 Smoothie is, and how everyone can make one at home.
  • How she is renovating her first home.
  • How she is designing her home with what she holds as valuable. Think: water filters, zero-VOC paint, non-toxic flooring, and eco-friendly furniture.
  • How to improve air quality in a home.
  • The effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) — and how she is addressing this in her home.
  • Wellness tips for how to use lighting in our homes.
  • Why she’s creating an open concept home.
  • Her happy place — the kitchen — and how she’s encouraging her boys to spend time together in this space.
  • Why she loves rugs — and how she’s choosing them for her home, making sure they are natural and non-toxic.
  • Other design elements she’s using and creating in her new home.
  • The words she and her husband used to help envision their home.

Being Home With the Brownstone Boys (Jordan Slocum and Barry Bordelon)03 Oct 202200:33:43

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman is talking with The Brownstone Boys.

The Brownstone Boys, otherwise known as Jordan Slocum and Barry Bordelon, are interior designers, DIY-ers, and renovators of historic brownstones in Brooklyn, New York.

They share in this episode that after they purchased their first home together — which, yes, was a brownstone —they started a blog and Instagram account about their renovation process. What started as something to share with family and friends quickly turned into them helping other people renovate their brownstones. So, they did what anyone else would have done!  They quit their corporate jobs and became the Brownstone Boys.

Jordan and Barry talk about their passion for preserving original details when renovating brownstones. They say that craftsmanship is very important to them and that their biggest goal is restoring the way brownstones used to be made.

They also discuss the definition of a brownstone, they share tips for anyone about to embark on a renovation, no matter they style of their space, and they suggest the two biggest things everyone should talk to their contractors about at the start of any project.

Finally, you’ll hear them share on how history has unfolded — meaning, the things they’ve discovered — when they’ve opened walls during some of their renovation projects.

Being Home With a Home Editor’s Costco Shopping Tips (Anna Gragert)26 Sep 202200:26:44

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host Laurie Gunning Grossman (@laurie.gunning.grossman) is talking with Anna Gragert, Senior Lifestyle Editor at Hunker (an home design and decor online publication).

Anna knows a thing or two about Costco. As the senior editor of lifestyle and design content, one topic that seems to captivate the Hunker audience is anything that involves Costco, everyone’s favorite wholesale store. In a nutshell, if you’re unfamiliar with Costco, this store has food, clothing, furniture, alcohol, electronics – you name it, they have it or have had it at some point. And they have it in bulk.

After all the articles that Anna has researched, written, and edited about Costco (with her team of writers), it’s safe to say Anna is an expert on all things Costco.

In this conversation, we discuss how she and her team identify what’s trending at Costco, the secrets she’s learned about how to spot deals and other perks, and whether a Costco membership is actually worth it. We also hear about the psychology behind why people spend so much time in Costco. Costco has a sneaky shopping strategy.  It’s fascinating!

Being Home With a Lifestyle Game Designer (Jill Wilson)19 Sep 202200:29:06

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman talks with Robin Games founder and CEO Jill Wilson.

If you’re wondering about the connection between mobile gaming and home design and decor, Robin Games focuses on new genre of mobile gaming called Lifestyle Gaming — beginning with their debut of PLAYHOUSE, an interior design-focused mobile game. Basically, you’re stepping into a moodboard where you get to design spaces with beautiful art and decor. Lifestylist enthusiasts, this is a game for you. And if you don’t think of yourself as a gamer, Jill and her women-led Robin Games team are here to challenge your perception of a gamer.

In this conversation, Jill discusses her passion for providing more opportunities for women in the game industry; the love of games that she’s had for her entire life; and of course, we get into how to play PLAYHOUSE: think designing spaces, getting feedback, rewards, and advancing to more projects.

If you love making spaces look beautiful, and, as Robin says, putting pretty things in pretty places, listen to our chat, and then go download the app and get to designing. It’s a fun, relaxing escape that’ll keep you inspired.

Being Home With an Expert Aromatherapist (Amy Galper)12 Sep 202200:26:38

“It could even be like a passive diffuser which means just putting a few drops on a cotton ball and leaving it around the room or putting a drop on a pillow on your couch, you know, and have it diffuse that way.” — Amy Galper on ways to use essential oils in our home.

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman talks with aromatherapist expert, author, and teacher Amy Galper.

Amy is the founder of the New York Institute of Aromatherapy (the first aromatherapy school in New York City) and is a consultant in the clean beauty and wellness space. In addition to her Aromatherapy Certification Program called “Aromatherapy in Action,” Amy is the author of the “Ultimate Guide to Aromatherapy” and co-authored “Plant Powered Beauty.” It’s safe to say that Amy knows essential oils.

In this conversation, Amy talks about the power of aromatherapy and how our sense of smell has a profound effect on our health and wellbeing. We talk about the essential oils and ways to use them in the bedroom (for relaxation and sleep), the kitchen (specifically in cleaning products) and our work desks (for focus and energy).

IN THIS EPISODE WE ALSO TALK ABOUT

  • The importance of using 100% plant-based natural essential oils.
  • Aromatherapy diffusers and where (and where not) to use them.
  • Aromatherapy oils she uses according to the seasons.
  • How aromatherapy triggered her desire to simplify her life and to use plant-based ingredients (which meant detoxifying her home and decluttering).
  • How we can start paying attention to our own smelling abilities.

Being Home With Rachel Moriarty [BEST OF]29 Aug 202200:36:43

On this episode, we’re sharing @laurie.gunning.grossman’s chat with Rachel Moriarty in this “best of” conversation.

Rachel is an award-winning, color-loving, San Diego-based interior designer. And when we say color loving, we mean it. Take one look at her Instagram page or her website and you’ll know what we mean. She describes her style at colorfully coastal, and as she says, this either magnetizes people to her or repels them. If you don’t love color, you need not apply!

You’ll hear Rachel talk about how she works with her ADHD to tap into her creativity, the path that led her into interior design, and how The Grateful Dead plays a part in her home decor. She’s been featured on HGTV and The Design Network and does Visibility Coaching for fellow interior designers on brand strategy.

Being Home With Spirit Daughter Jill Wintersteen [BEST OF]15 Aug 202200:34:18

I’m thrilled to share again my chat with Jill Wintersteen in this “best of” conversation.

Jill is a spiritual teacher and founder of Spirit Daughter, an astrology and wellness brand. I personally turn to Spirit Daughter for their beautiful crystals, Moon workbooks, gratitude journals, and manifestation cards. All these products are a part of my spiritual practice.

Although we recorded this episode at the top of 2022, I wanted to share it again because Jill offers evergreen advice on how to manifest a home, why setting our vibration first thing in the morning with a gratitude practice can change our entire day, and specific crystals that can help support us in our home, offering protection, abundance, and prosperity.

Healthy Candle Tips You Need to Know - Minisode08 Aug 202200:08:05

Many of you in our Hunker audience are candle lovers, so we're sharing tips and tricks on how to keep your candle burning for as long as possible. You’ll also hear from Kristen Pumphrey and Tom Neuberger from P.F. Candle Co. since they are experts in this field.

With the price of candles these days, you don’t want any of it to go to waste, right? If you follow these steps, your candle with burn clean and bright, just like was born to do.

In this minisode, we cover these tips (listen to the full episode to hear more):

#1. Before you light a candle, trim the wick to a ¼ inch long.

#2. When you light a candle for the very first time, let it burn at least two hours or until the entire top layer of wax is melted all the way to the edge.

#3. Speaking of tunneling, there’s a fix for that.

#4. Don’t put debris in your candle.

#5. When you want to put out the flame, don’t actually blow it out. Use a metal dipper to dip the lit wick back into the wax.

#6. If you haven’t taken care of your candle, don’t worry – there are ways to rescue it.

#7. Some final tips for your candle care.

Being Home With Botanical Black Girl (Stephanie Horton)01 Aug 202200:35:46

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman chats with plant enthusiast and plant consultant Stephanie Horton, otherwise knowns as Botanical Black Girl.

Stephanie makes caring for houseplants feel so effortless. As she says, she loves plants because they’re “chill.” She has such a relaxed approach to caring for greenery.

In this conversation, Stephanie talks about how she is moving away from being a plant collector, and instead calls herself a plant enthusiast. Although, many people refer to her as a plant consultant—she helps others discover how they can get their plants to thrive and stay alive.

Here she shares how it’s important to know where your indoor plants originate from before you bring them into your home; how to deal with negative self-talk around your ability to care for plants; and the best plants to have in the kitchen, the bathroom, and the bedroom.

We also talk about which plants are on her bucket list; greenery that work best in modern decor, or which ones to add when you want a lush feeling in your home; and she shares ideas on propagation — it’s something she loves doing with her plants.

If you’re feeling timid about indoor plant care or how to get started, Stephanie’s helpful advice that will make it all feel more manageable to you.

By the end of this conversation, you’ll be ready to add some new plants to your space!

Being Home With a Prop Stylist on Home Styling Tips (Robin Zachary)25 Jul 202200:31:31

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman is talking with prop stylist Robin Zachary.

In this conversation, they talk about how people can unlock their inner stylist to create beautiful vignettes and spaces at home. After many years of working in magazines where Robin learned how to do prop styling on the job, she now does it as her full-time gig.

Robin shares tips from the photo world on how we can style specific areas of our homes, including bookshelves, coffee tables, and the entryway table. She also has suggestions on where to find unique items for decor. For her, she loves the hunt.

She encourages us to see our homes as ever-changing—and that using styling techniques helps us to curate our spaces, establishing a sort of world within our homes.

You don’t have to just be interested in a career in prop styling to enjoy this episode. If you love to create beauty just for the sake of beauty (and learning styling tips on how to do that, especially in your personal spaces), you’ll love this episode.

In this episode we also talk about:

  • Understanding the hierarchy in how we arrange items in our home – and how to use the spaces around us.

Being Home With a Feng Shui Expert on Bedrooms (Kate MacKinnon)11 Jul 202200:31:01

In this conversation, host @laurie.gunning.grossman talks with Feng Shui expert, Kate MacKinnon.

Kate shares how we can use Feng Shui in our bedrooms to create the most supportive spaces for our health and wellbeing. She believes that the bedroom is a place for restoration, rejuvenation, and intimacy – a sacred place where we can go to recharge. So, how we set it up is important. We talk about the ideal placement of the bed, the one color she does not recommend, ways to create a feeling of balance, and much more.

Kate says that when she was younger, she originally wanted to go into interior design, yet she took a detour into a corporate career in banking. However, in 1999 she felt something was missing and did "The Artist's Way"—and connected with the question: “When you were 7 years old, what did you think about before going to sleep at night?” She remembered that she loved rearranging people’s homes and buying furniture for her best friend’s doll house. When Feng Shui was introduced to her on a business trip to Hong Kong, she decided to study it. She’s been a Feng Shui consultant now for 21 years, and now has her own business called Everyday Feng Shui.

If you’ve wondered about Feng Shui—what it is and how it works—and especially how you can use it in your bedroom, listen to this episode.
