| Becoming a Freelance Illustrator for Marvel, Disney and DC: Doaly | 31 May 2026 | 00:50:59 | |
How does a creative side project turn into a decade long freelancing business working with the biggest names in pop culture, like Disney, Pixar, Marvel, DC Comics, Lucasfilm, Warner Bros and Sony Pictures? All good super-heroes have an origin story. And this interview tells the series of events that took Doaly from working for a company in Birmingham, England, to the front page of comic covers seen all over the world. Signing at Comic-con events. It's quite the transformation. Tarlochan Doal, AKA Doaly, spent 15 years as a full time in-house web and UX designer. Illustration was the side hustle he did to scratch a creative itch, designing movie posters for films he loved. Then one Saturday morning, Doaly woke to an email from a movie studio. And his whole script changed. This episode of the Being Freelance podcast with Steve Folland covers: - Why he filled his portfolio with the work he wanted to be hired for, and how design blogs and social media got it in front of the right people - The passion projects that catapulted his career — including a Wonder Woman piece that sold 1,500 posters in a weekend and let him quit his day job - Using UX contracting to bridge the financial gap in his first year of full-time freelancing - Building a garden office to separate work from home - because when you love what you do, you'll work all day and night if you let yourself - How a random 45-minute conversation at a New York convention led to his first Marvel Comics cover - Multiple income streams across movies, comics, book covers and advertising - so no single client base can sink you - The weekly phone calls with a fellow designer that serve as his informal co-mentoring It's one hell of a story. And you might think - well, I'm not trying to work with Marvel, how will this freelancer's story relate to me? But there's so much relatable freelance advice and business tips to be drawn from his experiences. Presentations, screen shares, webinars, video calls, demos. Plus livestream/record in landscape & vertical at the same time, perfectly designed for both formats. | Business Name vs Your Own Name: Which is Better for Freelancers? | 24 May 2026 | 00:22:55
It's a question Steve Folland gets asked a lot: as a freelancer, is it better to have a company name or use your own? In this compilation episode, Steve digs deep into 11 years of the Being Freelance podcast archive - pulling together voices from guests including brand copywriter Mark Grainger, branding expert Bhavini Lakhani, copywriter Graeme Piper, illustrator Dan Bailey, social media consultant Alison Battisby, marketing agency founder Ross Simmonds, and more - to try and get to the bottom of it once and for all.
Of course, there's no single right answer - but Steve rounds things up with his own take on when each approach makes sense. HEAR THE FULL EPISODES JOIN THE COMMUNITY NEW TO FREELANCING? | From Freelancer To Studio - The Power Of Positioning | 08 Feb 2026 | 00:56:18
Laura has been a professional graphic designer for over 20 years, but her freelance journey began in 2008 after the birth of her first child. With daycare in Manhattan costing more than rent, Laura started piecing together freelance work from home; juggling projects from a tiny dining table in a fourth-floor walk-up. Freelancing wasn’t always smooth. But eventually, after settling in Massachusetts, it clicked. After a particularly harsh freelance interview left her devastated, Laura made a decisive shift. She stopped calling herself Rizby Designs and became Rizbee Studio instead - a small but powerful change that reframed how clients perceived her work. And how she saw herself and her business. Laura began positioning herself as a studio, using “we”, and gradually building a trusted team of contractors around her. Over time, Laura discovered what she truly loved: designing brand systems, particularly for consumer packaged goods in the food and beauty industries. Finding her niche was the next big change. Laura’s growth has been fuelled by intentional networking. From women-led business groups locally, to major industry expos across the US. Laura shares how she approaches events, follows up thoughtfully, and builds genuine relationships that often turn into work, even if it’s months later. Laura also shares why she’s invested heavily in her business over the past few years: hiring a business coach (who’s helped her double revenue year-on-year), bringing on a social media manager, fractional CMO, director of operations, CFO, and freelance designers - all while remaining the creative heart of the studio. Beyond client work, Laura has created something rare: a true client community. Including hosting a client appreciation dinner (first time we’ve heard that on the podcast!). She explains how fostering connection between clients has become a defining part of her business. It feels amazing the difference defining herself as a ‘studio’ instead of a freelancer has made. | Every client is a learning experience - Illustrator Kendyll Hillegas | 26 Sep 2021 | 00:52:32
Chronic pain had left Kendyll unable to work. Stuck at home, depressed, her sister gave her a watercolour set, saying ‘If Henri Matisse can paint from bed, then you can too”. And she did. Every single day. Sharing her illustrations of food and household objects on Tumblr. Kendyll’s fine art education had helped her find relief from the pain. Unexpectedly, it also helped her find work when a celebrity chef with a magazine got in touch. A year and a half after that first commission Kendyll had the confidence to realise this was actually a career. She was a freelance illsustrator. From dealing with clients, budgets, contracts, deadlines, health, starting a family, diversifying her income… there’s been a lot to learn. And each client gives her a chance to do just that. Now Kendyll paints a picture of life for her being freelance as she chats to Steve in the first episode of Season 15. Enjoy! Tom began freelancing right out of university after realising that the suit-and-tie life wasn’t for him. 12 years on, he’s built a strong and successful web development business and he’s now ready to branch out and try his hand at other things. When one of his tweets blew up and gained 2.5 million impressions, Tom seized the moment and wrote an ebook; the first in a lineup of digital products he’s creating to help freelancers get ahead. He’d always wanted to write a book and sell a product and he finds meaning in helping other freelancers to make their way. Tom shares that story and chats to Steve about finding clients, pricing his services and balancing his time.

| Connection and belonging - Speaker and Facilitator Kat Vellos | 20 Jun 2021 | 00:43:03 | |
Kat freelanced on the side of her design jobs for years, with work coming in via word of mouth referrals from her large, local community. After designing day and night for years, Kat eventually pulled back on freelancing so that she could spend her free time exploring other creative pursuits. Later, Kat spent several years writing a book while still working as a designer for companies including Slack and Pandora. After self-publishing that book in January 2020, opportunities and offers began pouring in and Kat’s now freelance full time, speaking and facilitating around the topic of her book — cultivating better friendships in adulthood. She chats to Steve about finding community and connection, pricing her work, and writing a book and the self-publishing process.

| Cold Outreach: What Actually Works for Freelancers | 31 Jan 2026 | 00:15:34 | |
Cold outreach can often get a freelance business started. When you need to bring in clients, maybe a period of cold outreach, or even a consistent long term pattern of it, could be exactly what warms our business back up again. But again and again on the Being Freelance podcast, freelancers have shared how proactive outreach - in many different forms - played a huge role in getting their business started, or getting it moving again when things felt quiet. This episode is a little different from the usual Being Freelance format. Rather than a single guest interview, it’s a reflection on conversations with freelancers who’ve taken a deliberate approach to outreach. You’ll hear how copywriter Adri Kopp refined her cold email process, worked out who she should actually be reaching out to, and set herself daily outreach targets - discovering that volume and timing mattered just as much as personalisation. You’ll hear how fintech copywriter André Spiteri approached cold outreach as a simple, repeatable habit, deliberately avoiding emotional attachment to individual emails so he could keep momentum going. Designer and illustrator Iancu Barbarasa shares how sending hundreds of emails wasn’t about asking for work, but about starting conversations - conversations that later led to some of the biggest projects of his career. The episode also explores outreach beyond email. Sustainability copywriter Raymond Manzor talks about cold calling, sending physical letters with samples, and following up by phone. Standing out simply because hardly anyone else was doing it. Whilst visual storyteller Ashwin Chacko shares how self-publishing a book and proactively sharing it opened doors to workshops, conversations, and paid work. Alongside the tactics, there’s plenty of honesty about rejection. Most people won’t reply. Some will say no. A few might tell you to get lost. And that’s all part of the process. The freelancers featured here talk candidly about learning not to take it personally, separating their identity from their work, and trusting that being in the right place at the right time often comes from showing up consistently. What comes through most clearly is this: And while outreach often becomes more selective as a business grows, it never completely goes away. So even if your work mostly comes through referrals, word of mouth, or SEO, this episode is a gentle nudge to ask: Featuring insights from these brilliant freelance guests, whose full episodes you should absolutely check out: Fintech Copywriter André Spiteri Designer & Illustrator Iancu Barbarasa Sustainability Copywriter Raymond Manzor Visual Storyteller Ashwin Chacko Conservation Illustrator Stefán Yngvi Pétursson JOIN THE COMMUNITY NEW TO FREELANCING? | Human-centred freelancing - Brand Designer Nela Dunato | 06 Jun 2021 | 00:41:43
Nela Dunato is an artist, designer, and writer from Rijeka, Croatia. She likes to have fingers in 'many pies’, but equally has to balance the challenge of having so many hobbies that could also become work. She's forged a successful freelance career working for 'human centered brands'. A form of business ownership she knows so well she could write the book on it. In fact, shedid. Nela discusses the great position bilingual freelancers are in. So many go straight for English language websites, but actually if you have a site in your native tongue too, you can make a far greater impact SEO wise in that smaller pond.

| How Katie Chappell Built (and Unbuilt) a Scalable Freelance Illustration Business | 25 Jan 2026 | 00:54:28 | |
Katie Chappell is a freelance live illustrator based in the UK - and her story takes some unexpected turns. After being sacked from a graphic design job, Katie slowly built a freelance illustration career through side jobs, teaching guitar, working in retail, and even becoming a nanny abroad. A 100-day drawing project helped her find confidence, momentum, and visibility - and eventually led her into live illustration and graphic recording. Things really took off during the pandemic, when Katie adapted quickly to online events and found herself booked solid. At one point, she scaled the business into an agency-style setup with salaried staff and 24 illustrators on the books. On paper, it looked amazing. In reality, it nearly broke her. In this episode, Katie talks honestly about scaling up, scaling back, pricing, niching, marketing, work-life balance, and the moment she realised something had to change. We also get into the practical stuff: working with a virtual assistant, setting clear prices, and why “make work, share work” is still the foundation of her marketing. Katie is part of The Good Ship Illustration - an education and community space for illustrators, that she founded with two of her friends. If you enjoy Katie on here, do check out The Good Ship Illustration podcast!

| Blagging and learning - Web Designer Andy Clarke | 21 Feb 2021 | 00:52:29 | |
In 1998 Andy gave up a comfortable position — “£35,000 a year to answer the phone about three times a week” — to start his own thing as a freelancer. It was the early days of the web and he didn’t have much of a plan, but he was keen and enthusiastic about doing better work. Two decades later, Andy and his wife Sue, who handles the business side of things, are still going strong. He chats to Steve about putting out good content to show what you can do, maintaining a reliable income with fewer clients, and why living at work, rather than working from home, is bad for you.

| How These Freelancers Work ON Their Business All Year | 18 Jan 2026 | 00:14:37 | |
As freelancers, it’s easy to spend most of our time in the business - delivering client work, meeting deadlines, keeping things ticking over. But if we never step back, time has a habit of running away from us. We can be swept along on a current of what people ask us to do, not thinking about if it's where we want to be heading. This episode is a little different from the usual Being Freelance podcast format. Instead of a single guest interview, it’s a reflection on conversations with freelancers who consistently make time to work on their business - not just once a year, but regularly. You’ll hear how different people approach this in their own way: Some take themselves off on solo business retreats - sometimes to a hotel, sometimes just to a different room in the house — with no client work allowed. Others hold quarterly CEO retreats, stepping away from day-to-day delivery to review what’s working, what isn’t, and what they want more (or less) of. One even does a 'Weather Report', seeing what's on the horizon for their work, personal life, creativity, and the wider world - treating their business like something that moves in seasons. What they all have in common is this: Regular reviews help remove mental load, bring clarity, and often make client work feel more enjoyable - because you’re no longer carrying half-finished thoughts about marketing, pricing, direction, or next steps in the back of your mind. You’ll also hear a very practical reminder: if you want thinking time, you usually have to put it in the diary first. Two or three hours, a half day, once a month or once a quarter - it all counts. This episode isn’t about grand five-year plans or fancy frameworks. It’s about creating space to ask better questions: Is this still working? Am I enjoying this? Is this profitable? Is this taking me where I want to go? Because freelancing doesn’t have to be something that just happens to you. With a little regular reflection, you get to design it - deliberately. Featuring the insights of these fantastic freelance guests, whose full episodes you should totally check out.

| Bake it till you make it! - Illustrator Tom Hovey | 25 Oct 2020 | 00:54:21 | |
For Tom, the guy behind the illustrations on the Great British Bake Off, freelance life was years in the making. After studying illustration at university, Tom worked in a series of full-time, temporary jobs while pursuing illustration on the side. Tom’s break came when, by chance, he landed a role as an editing assistant on a TV show. Tom was honest about his situation: “I’m not interested in a career in telly, this is just something to pay the rent. I’m going to be an illustrator.” Management paid attention and came back to him later with a proposal. That TV show was the very first series of The Great British Bake Off and, while maintaining his full-time role as an editing assistant, Tom spent his evenings and weekends illustrating for the show. Skip ahead to today and Tom’s running his own studio with a team of freelancers and a new intern every year. They’re producing work for the Bake Off franchise and other clients in the food industry, as well as selling prints through an online shop. Listen to hear how Tom's freelance life has evolved since Bake Off began ten years ago.

| The Yorkshire Tea break that didn't end - PR Consultant Sharon Davis | 11 Oct 2020 | 00:52:00 | |
Sharon has always known that she wanted to do her own thing. Her freelance journey began back in 2010 when she was in her mid-twenties, restless and ready for a change. After six years freelancing and with plenty of successes (and some failures) under her belt, Sharon felt that call again. She needed something new, or a break at the very least, and so she moved to the middle of the English countryside to take a waitressing job for the summer. Still there 3 years later, Sharon’s freelancing again, building her PR agency with a small team and running a second business - a networking organisation for women in business in the local area. This is her incredible story so far.

| Learning to say no - Branding Expert Bhavini Lakhani | 27 Sep 2020 | 00:37:43 | |
Bhavini didn't want to be freelance. When she came back from maternity, her role was no longer available and so she had a choice: retrain or take voluntary redundancy. Bhavini took the redundancy and started out with one freelance client. When the work kept coming in - mostly through friends and family on Facebook - she soon fell in love with the flexibility. She chats to Steve about finding clients, building a website and social media presence, protecting her family time and learning to say no to the work she doesn’t enjoy.

| Bonus episode: Live Q&A with John Espirian (LinkedIn, content marketing and personal branding) | 16 Aug 2020 | 00:34:13 | |
Previous podcast guest John Espirian (friend of the show), joined us for a Live Q&A in the Being Freelance community in May. John is widely known for his “Relentlessly Helpful” approach and he was indeed very generous during this chat. As a content marketing expert and self-confessed LinkedIn nerd, John answered questions from the community around building a personal brand, making quality connections on LinkedIn, and finding ways to do more with the content you’ve already spent time and energy creating. John’s book, Content DNA, contains a handful of building blocks that will help you define the unique “shape” of your business and then build an online presence around it. It’s available now. Huge thanks to John for his time and generosity! JOIN THE COMMUNITY NEW TO FREELANCING? THERE'S A COURSE FOR YOU! The Being Freelance course is made for you! | Survival skills - Copywriter and Author Sarah Townsend | 19 Jul 2020 | 00:38:55
Sarah’s been freelance for more than twenty years now and she says it’s taken her “a damn long time” to get to where she is. She’s gone from saying yes to everything and trying to do it all herself - including raising two children as a single parent - to taking herself seriously as a business owner and finding boundaries, balance and a way to do more than just survive. These days, after turning fifty, Sarah gives herself Fridays off and outsources the jobs she doesn’t enjoy. She works from the gym (when we’re not in lockdown), where she breaks up her day with exercise and feels energised by the buzz of people around her. In her book, Survival Skills for Freelancers, released recently in June 2020, Sarah shares the biggest lessons she’s learnt about working for yourself without burning out. The book has been voted as the next Being Freelance Book Club read for summer 2020, so come and join us in the community to read along.

| The power of choice - Cultural Consultant Marge Ainsley | 05 Jul 2020 | 00:46:08 | |
After she hit the ten-year mark in her freelance career, Marge took a step back to reassess. She hired a business coach and began reflecting on her values, her ideal clients and the way she structures her time. In the process, she discovered the power of choice. The choice to work with clients who share her values. To take a month off every summer. To start a second business that fills a creative hole. Marge chats to Steve about what she learned from that period of reflection and the changes it brought it about. She also talks about her joint side project, Museum Freelance, and the work they’re doing to support and lobby for freelancers in the Arts and Heritage sector.

| An appetite for adventure - Photographer and Videographer Steve Zavitz | 28 Jun 2020 | 00:43:36 | |
Steve began learning his craft in 2008 and took it professional in 2011. His ambition, back then, was to build a name for himself as an action sports photographer in the world of Parkour (freerunning). Depsite knowing there wouldn’t be much money in it, Steve gave it a go anyway. And he invested his time into a second niche, too. Calling on his background and contacts within the food industry, he began shooting for restaurants and then built his portfolio as a food photographer from there. He explains how he presents the two sides of his work online in a way that appeals to both types of client. He also talks about finding work, figuring out what to charge and trying to move on from Instagram and YouTube.

| Graphic Designer & Illustrator Itzel Islas | 24 Nov 2025 | 00:34:45 | |
From an overworked designer posting “a visual diary” on Instagram to running a multi-stream creative business, Itzel Islas has built a freelance life entirely on her own terms. After almost a decade in apparel design, she started illustrating for fun - and quickly realised people loved her colourful, playful style. “Little by little I started creating art… and then I started getting clients through it.” Today she runs YAY Itzel, blending branding work, her online shop, Patreon sticker club, brand partnerships with Adobe and Wacom, murals, workshops and even organising pop-ups, all rooted in her Mexican culture. “I’m just chasing whatever is fun for me. And if it sounds fun, I’m all in.” She talks building a business organically, finding clients who share her values, and why being authentic is her biggest asset. “I’ve always seen everything I do as a big package of what is my business and how I sustain myself as an artist.” Hosted by freelance podcast and video podcast editor Steve Folland. | What do I want my days to look like? - UI/UX Design Consultant Rafal Tomal | 21 Jun 2020 | 00:43:24
Rafal taught himself design and started freelancing around his schoolwork at age 16. When he moved from Poland to the United States at 18, and with zero contacts and no design qualification, he landed a full-time job as a developer. Rafal progressed within the company, designing for some of the biggest websites and blogs out there, all while continuing with freelance work on the side. Until, eventually, he left the job to focus on his business and his personal brand full time. He formed a small agency with friends later, before leaving because his days were filling up with project management tasks rather than design work. These days, Rafal’s running a one-person design studio (with help from assistants and other specialists) and selling digital products and courses. “It’s not for everyone,” he says. “But don’t quit too soon. Give yourself a chance to see what’s really out there.”

| Nothing is a mistake - Email Conversion Strategist Eman Ismail | 14 Jun 2020 | 00:52:29 | |
Eman was working as a production assistant at a local TV station when she realised she wanted to write. She began applying for jobs while at the same time setting up her business and brand. Eman took a job offer and became the communications manager at a charity. A necessary experience, she says now, even though the commute was a killer and she barely saw her young son. These days, Eman’s found her own version of work-life balance after leaving the 12-hour days behind. She’s building on the skills she picked up in that first writing job and investing in herself with courses, mentorships and a mastermind. She chats to Steve about how her freelance career has developed so far, sharing plenty of practical tips along the way.

| Finding my own clients - Graphic Designer Christian Tait | 07 Jun 2020 | 00:34:20 | |
Christian spent the best part of two decades working in agencies before eventually going freelance. He’d had a couple of trial runs before but this time he wanted to do it properly. To Christian, that meant bringing in his own clients rather than setting up in the corner of an agency. And it’s working. These days, Christian gets most of his work via social media or word of mouth. He talks about taking a slow approach where the focus is on building relationships. He also chats to Steve about working at home with his wife (a fellow freelancer), collaborating on projects, and finding balance (by riding around on tractors every Friday when he volunteers at the local nature reserve).
