We are back Behind the Shedd! In episode 31, Harold, Russ, and Wade sit down with a true renaissance man and a dear friend to our team, Tommy Jackson. Tommy is a mentor, a leader, a life coach, a motivational speaker, a football coach, a money manager, an author, a music guy, a song man, and just a great human being. Ladies and gentleman, Mr. Tommy Jackson. Bio: Years later, Tommy returned to AUM to experience a full-circle moment. In 2017, he was named Business Alumni of the Year, and the following year, he was honored as one of AUM’s Top 50 Most Influential Alumni.
With over 30 years of experience helping clients plan for their financial goals, Tommy’s passion for helping others has remained a constant. His ability to connect deeply with people—drawing from his own life experiences—has allowed him to mentor and empower individuals across the nation, from student-athletes to high-level business leaders. Tommy’s commitment to helping others began on the football field. Though initially hesitant, he observed one of the Cahaba Heights Knights’ practice sessions in Birmingham, Alabama. During that visit, he overheard a child say, “Don’t expect much from us, mister, because we’re a bunch of losers.” That moment was pivotal. It reminded him how the people who believed in him had changed the course of his life—and he knew he wanted to do the same for others. Recognizing that his life principles could reshape how these kids saw themselves, Tommy agreed to coach the team—and he was right. Under his leadership, they went undefeated, outscoring their opponents 357–12. He not only led that team to a championship, but coached two new teams in the years that followed. As each group bought into his system, Tommy led the program to three consecutive championships. It was Tommy later transitioned to high school football, where he coached for seven years and won three state championships with Briarwood Christian High School. Building on his success in coaching, he founded The Knights, a youth mentorship program in 1998 that trained and guided over 100 athletes. Many went on to excel in college and professional sports. Among his proudest moments were seeing two of his Knights face off in the 2009 Super Bowl and another achieve a career-high ranking of World No. 11 in Women’s Tennis Doubles. Tommy’s journey also ventured into music. In 2010, he founded First Note Entertainment (FNE), a multi-genre record label that has achieved over 175 consecutive sold-out shows and launched artists into the Billboard Top 20. Songs from FNE have been featured on The Today Show, World of Dance, American Idol, The Voice, Grey’s Anatomy, and other popular TV shows. So far, Tommy’s journey has taken him through many unique chapters—but none as important as this one: helping others find their true potential. Dave's Bio: From 1990 to 1994, Gibson showcased his musical versatility as the frontman of the Gibson/Miller Band. Not only did he captivate audiences with his soulful voice, but he also penned many of the band's hits, including "High Rollin'", "Texas Tattoo", "Red, White, and Blue Collar", and "Stone Cold Country". He received the ACM award for ‘Best New Group’ in 1993. He’s also won six BMI awards, two NSAI awards, and was nominated for a Grammy. But for him, this is just the beginning. Gibson's portfolio of written songs is nothing short of impressive. His notable works include Alabama's "Jukebox in My Mind", Tanya Tucker's "If It Don't Come Easy", and Confederate Railroad's "Queen of Memphis" and "Daddy Never Was the Cadillac Kind". Gibson's songs have a unique ability to resonate with listeners, often exploring themes of love, loss, and the quintessential country lifestyle. Bio: In 1987, Conway was named President of Buddy Lee Attractions, and he eventually became CEO and co-owner of the company in 1998. During his tenure at BLA, Conway represented some of music’s most beloved and legendary artists, including Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, The Highwaymen (Willie, Johnny, Kris, and Waylon), Bill Monroe, The Dixie Chicks, Roy Orbison, George Strait, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Ronnie Milsap and Emmylou Harris. Tony has helped guide the successful careers of some of Country Music’s biggest stars, such as Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride, Tracy Lawrence, Jason Aldean, Lorrie Morgan, Sawyer Brown, Miranda Lambert, Jamey Johnson, Ricky Van Shelton, and John Michael Montgomery among others. Some major successful tours booked by Conway include The Highwaymen Featuring Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, and Waylon Jennings; Neil Young & Crazy Horse; Garth Brooks’ World Tour; and The Dixie Chicks World Tour. Tony Conway is also widely recognized as a leader in the production area of live entertainment. The coordinator of the very first FarmAid show, held in 1985, Conway has worked closely with many of those shows since. He was Executive Producer for the annual CMA Music Festival (formerly Fan Fair) for eleven years and has also served as the Executive Producer of the annual Verizon Wireless BamaJam Music & Arts Festival in Enterprise, AL and the new ShowMe Music & Arts Festival in Springfield, MO. The recipient of numerous industry awards, Conway has been honored with the following: two-time CMA-SRO Agent of the Year, Performance Magazine Agent of the Year, four-time Nominee for Pollstar/Third Coast Agent of the Year, and the Hubert Long Lifetime Achievement Award from the NATD. He also received the IEBA Talent Agent of the Year award, and was recognized as Volunteer of the Year by the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce. Tony was a recipient of the CMA President’s Award for leading the redesign and transformation of Fan Fair to the CMA Music Festival. In 2010, Tony took his 35 years of experience and industry contacts and struck out on his own, forming Conway Entertainment Group/Ontourage Management. More about today's guests: Upon the release of "Mrs. Steven Rudy", McGuinn was considered a "dark horse" on the country music scene, due in part to his jazz background and beatnik image, which were considered outside the norms of country radio. Mrs. Steven Rudy" was a top ten hit on the Billboard country music charts, and the highest-selling single on the country singles sales charts for five consecutive weeks. His album entered the Top Country Albums chart at number 18, setting a new record for the highest entry on that chart for the first release from an independent label. Bobby E. Boyd (aka 'Bandera Bob') is a Grammy Award Winning Songwriter with his most recent hit "Bless The Broken Road" (co-written with Marcus Hummon and Jeff Hanna) recorded by 'Rascal Flatts' . The song was No.1 for 6 weeks in 2005 and won a Grammy for Country Song of The Year in Feb. 2006 . It was also the most played song of the year , NSAI Song of the Year and has been awarded a Million-Air Certification by BMI (the 3rd for Boyd) . Welcome back to Behind the Shedd! In Episode 15, Harold, Russ, and Wade get in the huddle with Coach Barry Switzer. Coach Switzer is a former college and professional football coach. He served for 16 years as head football coach at the University of Oklahoma and four years as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL). He won three national championships at Oklahoma, and led the Cowboys to win Super Bowl XXX against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has one of the highest winning percentages of any college football coach in history, and is the second of only three head coaches to win both a college football national championship and a Super Bowl! Harold and Coach go way back to 1982 when they first met in Nashville and have remained friends ever since. Coach Switzer and Toby Keith were also close. Welcome back to Behind the Shedd! Harold and Eddie met in engineering school in Texas in 1959!! A lifelong friendship was born. Here's a little about Eddie - After moving to Nashville, Kilroy gained a position as a producer at Mercury Records. Kilroy's first studio record, produced in 1968, proved to be a hit for Jerry Lee Lewis — and made Kilroy the "one man responsible" for changing the fortunes of Jerry Lee Lewis' flagging career. Kilroy was a producer at Westpark Records in the early 1970s, and became president of Playboy Records when he founded the label for Hugh Hefner, for whom he signed Mickey Gilley. He recorded "Roomful of Roses" in 1974 with Mickey Gilley, and the album became a number one country western hit – Gilley went on to create six number one albums with Playboy. From there Kilroy moved to become the co-president of the MCA Nashville Records office. While at MCA Kilroy signed Faron Young to the label and produced two albums with Young: Chapter Two (1979) and Free and Easy (1980). In 1981 Eddie produced Louise Mandrell & RC Bannon on RCA records. Eddie Kilroy went independent after leaving MCA, and as an independent he produced the last album by Marty Robbins. Eddie developed and built a classic country music station for the newly created XM Satellite Radio company called Hank's Place, and later Willie's Place. Eddie now hosts Kilroy's Behind the Music: Stories of Outlaws & Legends Podcast. From humble beginnings in small town Autryville, North Carolina, Nick Autry started as a teenage drummer and has evolved into one of Nashville’s premier singer/songwriters and producer/ engineers. Autry has been a part of two Grammy-nominated albums, has recorded over a dozen Number One country songs and has more than 100 million streams as a songwriter. Eric Hurt - VP Empire Records Eric Hurt has a strong background in the music industry, with experience working in various roles for different companies. Eric's most recent position was as the VP of A&R Publishing for EMPIRE - Distribution | Recordings | Publishing in Nashville, where they played a key role in expanding the company's presence in the country music space. Prior to that, Eric worked as the Sr. Director of Creative for independent publisher Black River Entertainment, LLC, representing hit songwriters and artists. Eric also held similar positions at Spirit Music Group and Zavitson Music Group, where they represented artists and songwriters on a publishing and management level. Eric's early career included a role as the Creative Director for Universal Music Publishing / Brentwood Benson. Overall, Eric's experience demonstrates their expertise in A&R, publishing, and creative direction in the music industry.
