Gina Knight, the dynamic, multifaceted drummer has been active in the Chicago music scene for 25 years, and attributes her staying power to getting a chance to play out very early in age, and performing with a variety of different acts, rather than just focusing on one genre.

These days, Gina is enjoying being a first call sub for a number of different busy groups in town, as well as her steady gig "Nick@Knight!" Her favorite accomplishment is her instructional body of work known as "Drum Lessons Girl" on youtube. She has many youtube videos that help young drummers learn to play, and they are all featured on her Gina Knight Youtube channel.

Since then she has contributed to The Guardian, Bachtrack, musicOMH, BroadwayWorld, BBC Music Magazine and OperaWire, and conducted operatic research around the world for The Callas Imprint: A Centennial Biography. This richly detailed account of Maria Callas’ life was published to coincide with her one hundredth birthday in December 2023, and is currently a finalist in the 2024 ARSC Awards for Best Historical Research in Recorded Classical Music.

We are very lucky to welcome this week's guest, Marty Wheeler! In this week's episode, we have an in-depth conversation about the Nashville Music publishing industry. Music publishing can be very complicated, and Marty helps us navigate all the different ways musicians can utilize publishing to enhance their careers.

Marty is a seasoned executive in the music industry with over 30 years of experience, holding a BBA in Music Business from Belmont University. As Vice President of Music Publishing at renowned companies such as EMI, Universal Music, BMG, Zomba Music's Brentwood-Benson Music, and McSpadden-Smith Music, he has signed over 200 artists and songwriters and managed the launch of numerous joint ventures and independent publishing companies across country, rock/pop, and Christian music genres.

In 2008, Marty founded his own company and passed the Series 7 stockbroker exam with the Securities Exchange Commission to establish a fund for catalog acquisitions. This endeavor led him to broker numerous multi-million dollar catalog transactions and consult for entertainment companies, including Legendary Pictures, Big Tractor, Murrah Music, and many others.

Marty has been an adjunct professor at Belmont University for over 24 years, teaching music publishing and earning multiple nominations for the Chaney Distinguished Professor Award and the Presidential Faculty Achievement Award.

Marty serves as the Senior Regional Director for Samaritan's Purse, overseeing eight regional directors. He continues to teach at Belmont and co-owns Fort Noxx Music Publishing Group, where he sits on the board of directors and focuses on music IP-related catalog acquisitions.

Dr. Endres accepted a faculty position at the University of Wisconsin in 2017. Here he acts as professor of drum set, jazz history, and is the drumline coordinator for the UW Marching Band.

Dr. Endres received his Bachelor of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, his Masters of Music at the University of Illinois, and his Doctorate of Music and Ethnomusicology at the University of Illinois.

Dr. Endres has been adjudicating music festivals and competitions extensively throughout the United States over the last decade. Garrett Breeze is a Nashville-based composer best known for his catalog of more than 1,500 choral arrangements of popular music, including more than 1,000 written for competitive show choir. He has worn many hats during his career as a freelance orchestrator and music preparer including work on 11 large-format films, Christmas with the Tabernacle Choir, video games such as World of Warcraft and Overwatch, and artists such as Brian Stokes Mitchell, Jordan Smith, Kristin Chenoweth, Michael W. Smith, Santino Fontana, Sutton Foster, and Tauren Wells.  His original production music has been used in commercial spots on all the major television networks and in shows such as Access Hollywood, Judge Judy, Lego Masters, and NOVA. In 2022 he ventured into podcasting with his show Selling Sheet Music, which quickly became a leading voice in the publishing industry. Introducing our Co-Host, Jillian Shively!

Jillian works for Musicnotes as our Content and Production Assistant. She graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a degree in Music Composition and Film Scoring, and a certification in Music Technology and Production.

Born and raised in Colorado, Jillian has been performing and writing music since elementary school. She has received three DownBeat awards for vocal Jazz performance and has earned opportunities to perform with several notable musicians, including Sarah Brightman (of Phantom of the Opera) and Larry Braggs (of Tower of Power).

Now having moved to Nashville, she continues to pursue her passions of teaching, composing, and performing music!

Ashley Miller has been the band and general music teacher at Lancaster Middle School for 13 years. She has a booming program in her rural school - and loves teaching middle school.

We discuss the experiences of a music educator in rural areas, Solo and Ensemble across the U.S., and explore the opportunities available to anyone who wants to pursue a career in music education.

President Kathleen Marsh tells the story of Musicnotes from the origin until today. For the past 25 years, President Marsh has been the driving force behind the tremendous catalogue Musicnotes has to offer and made sure the artists and publishers were included in the process. There is even some discussion about Olympic dressage!
