#26: Emily Davidson | Making room for everybody

Episode 26

mercredi 4 octobre 2023Duration 50:25

Re-broadcast! Going all the way back to the beginning we bring you some of my favourite conversations from The Modern Club Management podcast.

Today I am speaking with Emily Davidson. Emily is the Participation and Inclusion Manager at Golf New Zealand, an organisation she has worked for since 2017. Her biggest career highlight to date was Golf NZ winning the NZ Sport and Recreation Award for Leadership in Diversity and Sport for 2022. Not being a golfer herself when she joined Golf NZ, Emily was able to bring a fresh perspective and ask the crucial disrupter questions against the doctrine of 'this is just the way we do it in golf'.

This was a super interesting conversation which helped to broaden my thinking around some of the challenges facing different groups when it comes to golf. I had some great takeaways of simple things that can be done to improve the user friendliness of our website, clubhouse, and some longer time/bigger project ideas also. If you have any level of diversity within your membership then I recommend taking a listen.

Thoughts and reflections

  • Beginners having to wear full golfing attire can be a big barrier to entry. Cost is an obvious one but also imposter syndrome being created of the "all the gear, no idea" mentality and being embarrassed dressing like a golfer but not being able to play.
  • Etiquette can come later when it's needed. Don't start off with all of these rules. It doesn't come across as welcoming to the sport.
  • What can we do to change the image perception of golf?
  • Why is a shirt with a collar automatically smart and a shirt without one not?
  • Tradition and history of the game isn't a good enough reason for current dress codes, why? Because if it was, men would still be wearing plus fours and women long floaty dresses!
  • Don't assume everyone knows where they need to go or report to when they arrive. This starts with the website.

lundi 26 septembre 2022Duration 05:01

In these 'Monday Motivation' bonus episodes of my podcast, I'll be sharing some of my favourite takeaways and moments from the previous episode of The Modern Club Management Podcast.

In this episode, Gregg Patterson tells us that debriefing (the art of reflection) after an event, or doing demands debrief as he calls it, is the best piece of advice he's ever received in his career.

He also explains some of the best examples of team bonding. Both from the view of departments within the club and the overall clubs.

Please enjoy this episode.

#25: Kari Haug | Making golf courses more enjoyable for women and slower swing speed golfers

Episode 25

jeudi 12 janvier 2023Duration 46:40

Today I am speaking with Kari Haug, http://karihaug.com/. Kari is the owner and lead golf course architect at Kari Howg Planning & Design, Inc., a golf course architecture company that focuses on sustainable and eco-sensitive golf course design. Kari is a member of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects (EIGCA), and one of the very few female golf course architects in the world. She is committed to eco-sensitive and sustainable golf course design, and the improvement of course playability for women and seniors. A competitive amateur and former collegiate golfer, Kari is able to envision sound golf strategy from tee to green. Using CAD technology and other design rendering techniques, Kari is able to make drafted designs come to life for a memorable golf experience.

I'm excited to have Kari join me for a discussion around her sustainability model and Playable Pathways, to see how we can make golf courses more enjoyable for female golfers, and slower swing speed golfers in general, to play which is a crucial part of engaging them and keeping them as active golfers.

3 Things to think about while you listen

  1. Are the holes on your course friendly for the slower speed golfers while still providing a challenge to the high speed players?
  2. What are some simple changes you can make to tee locations to make certain holes easier?
  3. Is your entire greens or course committee made up of low handicap male golfers? How representative of your membership is this?

#24: Jules Murray | Unconscious bias, diversity and misogyny in clubs

Episode 24

jeudi 5 janvier 2023Duration 43:17

Welcome to Season 2 of the Modern Club Management Podcast. This season's theme is all around diversity in clubs. We'll be speaking with a diverse group of people from within the industry about their experiences, what we as an industry can do better to encourage diversity, how we can design golf courses to be more inclusive, why diversity of thought is so powerful, and much more. I hope you enjoy these conversations as much as I did. Listen to these with an open mind and be willing to have your current approach and thinking challenged.

We start off season 2 with Jules Murray. Jules started her career in sales and business development before moving into training and consultancy. In 2006 Jules founded Spider on the Wall Ltd which offers managerial training, soft skills, and mystery shopping services. A regular on the CMAE MDP as a presenter, Jules is well known and liked within the club community and brings a contagious energy to all of her sessions. Her passion lies in designing and delivering fun, interactive and experiential training courses; which having had the good fortune in being in some of her sessions she definitely delivers this in spades.

Jules' low hanging fruit to increase diversity

  1. Job adverts: de-bias the wording in your job adverts (website such as http://gender-decoder.katmatfield.com/ can be used to check your wording)
  2. CV selecting: avoid looking at the name, age, and gender. Focus on the skills and talents they could bring to the job. "Youth is no guarantee of creativity." Author unknown.
  3. Get more used to saying 'oh well' or 'so what': if they have a "silly" email address...so what? Does this mean they are unsuitable for the job?
  4. Interview with a diverse colleague who is completely different to you: e.g. if you're a 50 year old man interview candidates with a 20 year old female colleague. Use objective criteria and ask all candidates the same questions and look for areas of divergence in how you each rated them.
  5. Performance reviews: research shows that women are more likely to underrate themselves and men to overrate themselves. Plus in some cultures "boasting" can be seen negatively, therefore people may underrate themselves to appear humble.
  6. Shadow board: have a board full of younger members to gain diverse ideas. They can bring new ideas and creativity to old problems.
