mercredi 31 juillet 2024Duration 33:13

This conversation focuses on navigating challenging conversations in the workplace. It was an enjoyable discussion about a topic that all managers need to be skilled at but something which we can only become more comfortable with by doing repetitions!

I hope you enjoy his episode. If you would like to ask Spaska any questions or connect with her about this topic, she has kindly offered to share her email address.

#1: Gregg Patterson | Generating the BIG Happy

Episode 1

mercredi 30 août 2023Duration 49:30

Re-broadcast, season 1 episode 1! Going all the way back to the beginning as we bring you some of my favourite conversations from The Modern Club Management podcast. Watch out for some new episodes coming soon.

Gregg Patterson - generating the BIG Happy

Gregg is the President and founder of Tribal Magic; where he is an in-demand speaker around the globe. Prior to this, he was the General Manager for an incredible 34 years at The Beach Club in Santa Monica, California. He survived all that time and with a median staff tenure of an equally impressive 17 years! Which makes it safe to say that when it comes to the world of clubs, he knows a thing or two! His wide-ranging career has taken him from a gravedigger (yes, really) to Assistant GM of Bel-Air Country Club to GM of The Beach Club and now into one of the most sought-after speakers in the world.

In this episode we dive into Gregg's career; his love of stories and people; the power of curiosity and reflecting; and the main topic of the conversation...generating the BIG Happy for your staff.

Please enjoy!

#30: Monique Landman | Amygdala Hijack and Dealing with Cynics

Episode 30

mercredi 17 mai 2023Duration 30:19

In today's episode I am rejoined by Monique Landman, the Chief Empathy Officer and Co-founder of Unchain. After a successful corporate career in strategy and communications, Monique found her heart eight years ago and a new calling in life to bring empathetic leadership to the world so that people can lead with more humanity. It has never been more important than now to have empathy and compassion as a leader.

In this episode we discuss amygdala hijacking, how to handle this in others and how to notice it in yourself. This may help you handle those difficult interactions with have. What or who is a cynic? Are they actually the most passionate supporters of your club? And how we get them on our side and channel their passion?

I took a lot from this conversation and gave me plenty to reflect in both myself and the interactions I have.

#27: Phoebe Torrance | Getting women into golf

Episode 27

mercredi 8 février 2023Duration 29:33

Today I am speaking with Phoebe Torrance. Phoebe is the Women's Golf and Development Manager at The Metropolitan Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia.

This was a super interesting conversation which gave me some ideas of tactics to implement to make golf clubs more inclusive and welcoming to get more women into golf. It can be a tricky proposition running coaching programmes to bring new members into private members clubs but Phoebe has done a fantastic job and there are lots of ideas that can help clubs attract a more diverse group of members to join their clubs.

Thoughts and reflections

  • Golf clubs are intimidating places for people to arrive at for the first time. Clear signage and great instructions are very important to make people feel comfortable and welcome.
  • Can coaching programmes act as a "trial" for membership for people who are unsure on being able to commit the financial sums required to join great golf clubs. This can be a difficult decision to make when you are new to the game and have other life commitments.
  • Have a single point of contact that participants can reach out to with questions.

#25: Kari Haug | Making golf courses more enjoyable for women and slower swing speed golfers

Episode 25

jeudi 12 janvier 2023Duration 46:40

Today I am speaking with Kari Haug, http://karihaug.com/. Kari is the owner and lead golf course architect at Kari Howg Planning & Design, Inc., a golf course architecture company that focuses on sustainable and eco-sensitive golf course design. Kari is a member of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects (EIGCA), and one of the very few female golf course architects in the world. She is committed to eco-sensitive and sustainable golf course design, and the improvement of course playability for women and seniors. A competitive amateur and former collegiate golfer, Kari is able to envision sound golf strategy from tee to green. Using CAD technology and other design rendering techniques, Kari is able to make drafted designs come to life for a memorable golf experience.

I'm excited to have Kari join me for a discussion around her sustainability model and Playable Pathways, to see how we can make golf courses more enjoyable for female golfers, and slower swing speed golfers in general, to play which is a crucial part of engaging them and keeping them as active golfers.

3 Things to think about while you listen

  1. Are the holes on your course friendly for the slower speed golfers while still providing a challenge to the high speed players?
  2. What are some simple changes you can make to tee locations to make certain holes easier?
  3. Is your entire greens or course committee made up of low handicap male golfers? How representative of your membership is this?

#24: Jules Murray | Unconscious bias, diversity and misogyny in clubs

Episode 24

jeudi 5 janvier 2023Duration 43:17

Welcome to Season 2 of the Modern Club Management Podcast. This season's theme is all around diversity in clubs. We'll be speaking with a diverse group of people from within the industry about their experiences, what we as an industry can do better to encourage diversity, how we can design golf courses to be more inclusive, why diversity of thought is so powerful, and much more. I hope you enjoy these conversations as much as I did. Listen to these with an open mind and be willing to have your current approach and thinking challenged.

We start off season 2 with Jules Murray. Jules started her career in sales and business development before moving into training and consultancy. In 2006 Jules founded Spider on the Wall Ltd which offers managerial training, soft skills, and mystery shopping services. A regular on the CMAE MDP as a presenter, Jules is well known and liked within the club community and brings a contagious energy to all of her sessions. Her passion lies in designing and delivering fun, interactive and experiential training courses; which having had the good fortune in being in some of her sessions she definitely delivers this in spades.

Jules' low hanging fruit to increase diversity

  1. Job adverts: de-bias the wording in your job adverts (website such as http://gender-decoder.katmatfield.com/ can be used to check your wording)
  2. CV selecting: avoid looking at the name, age, and gender. Focus on the skills and talents they could bring to the job. "Youth is no guarantee of creativity." Author unknown.
  3. Get more used to saying 'oh well' or 'so what': if they have a "silly" email address...so what? Does this mean they are unsuitable for the job?
  4. Interview with a diverse colleague who is completely different to you: e.g. if you're a 50 year old man interview candidates with a 20 year old female colleague. Use objective criteria and ask all candidates the same questions and look for areas of divergence in how you each rated them.
  5. Performance reviews: research shows that women are more likely to underrate themselves and men to overrate themselves. Plus in some cultures "boasting" can be seen negatively, therefore people may underrate themselves to appear humble.
  6. Shadow board: have a board full of younger members to gain diverse ideas. They can bring new ideas and creativity to old problems.
