Welcome back to Behind Greatness. We are back again with Rudy. Rudy is a pre-eminent expert on black holes and a world-renowned Astrophysicist from Harvard, practising in the field since the mid-1960s. He is also the co-Founder of FREE / CCRI (see co-Founder past guests Rey Hernandez & Mary Rodwell) and also the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Cosmology.

Rudy immediately brings us to his thoughts on the big bang theory, the mother-daughter relationship of spawning universes and the blunder of the current dark matter theory. He lauds the work of his colleague Carl Gibson, an expert in fluid mechanics, on helping to unlock secrets of the universe. We hear about orbs, the spirality of consciousness and being forever marked by expanded possibilities after being in touch with a ufo ("miracles"?) and Rey Hernandez's contact modalities.

We dive into the burning of libraries and conservatories, the magic of operatic music, composition, intent and emotions - and accessing history and the potential future from the black hole. We talk about the ultimate cosmic intelligence, the purpose of the universe, the "sponsoring" of the "big G" of our universe of universes, the limiting of the size of the black holes by the quantum field, and the limitations of math. And, there's more (as always) … Rudy goes on to describe the agreement he had with Dr. Edgar Mitchell before he died in 2016, the rewiring of the brain after the exposure of light from UFOs and a device that was developed by colleagues which he helped test "to the limits" to detect consciousness beyond the grave.

For Rudy, part 1, please have a listen to episode #179.

Welcome back to Behind Greatness. We are back with Rudy.

We begin in the deep end with Rudy on this talk. We discuss his research experience and scientific exploration and the modern realities of getting ahead of the current science. He describes how the current belief in dark matter is incorrect, his discovery of the cluster of planets, the importance of MECOs (magnetospheric eternally collapsing objects) vs the classical definition of black holes. And that's just the start. We discuss his friend's (astronaut) Edgar Mitchell's mystical experience in space in the 1970s, his desire to get NASA explore this with him, the experience of shared animal and human consciousness in space, our thoughts in the quantum field and the importance of empathy as a driver for the universe. We discuss Rudy's desire for academics to mathematically study the lights emitted by ufos and for establishing intellectual academic research studies in this field, his belief in non-human intelligence and the wish that we open our minds to the wisdom of the universe.

96. Dr. Elisabetta Tosoni – Wildlife Researcher / Expert on Marsican Bears / Story-Teller / Actor – Living in the State of Wonder02 Mar 202200:46:21

We have a delightful conversation with Elisabetta, who joins us from her abode in the Apennine mountains in Abruzzo in central Italy. Elisabetta is the foremost expert on the Marsican Bear in Italy. Originally from Rome, Elisabetta has spent over 20 years living in the mountains observing, researching, writing about, and storytelling on the famous Marsican bear. Elisabetta was an aspiring actress as a teen. As she developed her love for emotional channelling that acting provided, she also began to experience the exact same energy in her nature walks as a biology student. Eventually, she decided to "break up" with acting to pursue a life studying, researching and living with wildlife – but not before learning the lifelong lesson of feeling with her gut. A scientist by trade and a storyteller by heart, Elisabetta brings us through her thoughts on the majesty of wildlife, the importance of empathy, fear and respect and the timelessness of nature and of art. And forest school. And tracking wolves alone in the Arctic. And a playful and frightening close encounter with her beloved bear.

95. Cat Criger – Indigenous Elder / Healer / Spiritual Dreamer / Racing Bike Enthusiast – Contributing to Other People's Curiosities23 Feb 202200:56:08

Today we are joined by Cat Criger in Toronto. Cat has had a life so far filled with experiences in following his curiosities. He is an Elder of the Cayuga Nation, Turtle Clan and has German and English ancestry. His father was a "disenfranchised" Indigenous man, which meant that his children were protected from the "scoop" of government authorities that took children away to residential schools. His father decided to pursue his career for the Department of Defence working on military aircraft. This imbued a young Cat with an interest in high tech machinery, which served him well later in his career. And then Cat pivots again in the 1990s after rediscovering the ancient philosophies of his Indigenous roots. Not shy of professing his passion of racing bikes, Cat discusses with us the importance of "always exploring" and living with the "twisty-roads-only" gps setting. We talk about the majesty of felines, the purpose of February, hot-pink deer, portable record players and Mr Baird, dream-catchers, swamps as both transition and as home and the gift of music from our mothers.

A winding discussion filled with metaphors - and lesson sharing.

94. Julie Church – Founder, Seas4Life / Marine Conservationist & Storyteller - Getting Back to our Blue Roots16 Feb 202200:49:48

We are joined this week by Julie Church on her rear porch. Our backdrop is the night sky over her backyard in Nairobi, Kenya. Julie brings us through a magically-weaved story about growing up in Kenya, with secondary and post-secondary schooling in Europe and South Africa and a life-long commitment to the magic and mystery of the sea. While working with the WWF she created an eco-friendly project where she created jobs and skills centres for the community through the collection of ocean refuse (ie. flipflops) and creating art from it. This kick-started her entrepreneurial approach to creating ocean and marine awareness. We also learned about a childhood filled with exploration of the land and the sea, her family's deep love of cultural and linguistic diversity, a horrific, near fatal and a fatal buffalo attack and the magic of witch-doctor guidance. We discussed her life as one filled with the beauty, the blessings and the danger of deep interconnectedness with nature's flow. Reminding us that we know more about our solar system that we do our ocean … which is a diverse, rich, mystical and charismatic story that she strives to share with the world. We explore how perhaps our human story is dependent on and rooted in our one ocean …. in fact, in our blue consciousness.

93. George Stroumboulopoulos – Host, "Strombo" on Apple Music Radio – Refusing to be Limited09 Feb 202201:02:20

George joins us from his abode in LA where he hosts his own Music Radio Show on Apple that is broadcast to over 120 countries. Originally from Toronto, George grew up with a no-nonsense single mom who taught him the importance of being of service to others. As a young boy, his backdrop was a life filled with daily library visits, a senior's home, rough neighbourhood streets, cinema and a growing affection for those anti-establishment music genres: punk and metal. We discuss the flawed artists who George says helped shaped him as he grew into a national media personality – with a unique edge. We go on to discuss the importance of doing "the interior work", living a life with space, refusing to be limited and clearing a path for others. We learn about a muse of his – Raine Maida – who taught him an important lesson on exploring the "what if" at an important juncture in his life. Throughout the chat, we come to understand the important things that really matter to George … and making your mark is not one of them. Listen in. And rock on.

92. Amy Jo Johnson – Director / Former Hollywood Actor / Screenwriter / Musician – Opening Doors to Your Light02 Feb 202200:50:48

Amy Jo is originally from Cape Cod and spent many years as an actor in Hollywood before packing up her bags and leaving for Montreal. After several years, she left for Toronto where she lives currently – devoting herself to film directing, writing and creating music. For 12 years, she, her siblings and her mom lived in a religious cult, with her only outlet for self-expression being gymnastics and story-telling. At age 15, her beliefs suddenly collapsed when her mother took her family out of the cult. From that point Amy Jo set upon a life of continued creative exploration. We discuss escaping rules and judgment, quieting inner voices, investing in story-telling and tapping into the creative flow. But we don't stop there … We explore some of her more reoccurring and lucid dreams and how they are a connective tissue to her sense of creative expression. We listen to a vivid account of "opening of doors" in her dream state and how this has shown itself through her sense of "seeing" beyond the physical. And it's the metaphorical doors to rebirth and to the creative realm that are just as relevant to this discussion as are the literal doors to the same.

During our chat, we invoke a past discussion we had with Carl Ruck (ep 73) about dreaming and an elevated state of consciousness.

91. Edoardo Ghignone – Founder, President – LTx / Bon Vivant – Putting Your Soul on the Table26 Jan 202200:43:40

Today we are joined by Edoardo Ghignone, who lives in The Hague, Netherlands. He is the founder of a consultancy named LTx that works with C-Suite leadership teams of large corporate organizations across Europe. Originally from Milan, Edoardo was brought up in a family that ran a manufacturing business in the city for 75 years. He describes his parental influences: an artisan father and a mother too fast for the world. He lived an early adult life devoted to learning languages, travelling, working in different countries and having fun. He brings us to the point in his life where he decided that he needed to put his "soul on the table". From there, we explore his thoughts on the beauty of caressing your ideas, trusting your intuition, and the importance of feeling. We also discuss a unique psychic ability that he uncovered later in his life and how he incorporates this into his understanding of inter-relatedness. And we hear about how wasting time is a direct input for learning and the creative process … playing cards, sipping wine and listening to elders through mountain side trips.

90. Dr. Rune Hjarnø Rasmussen – Expert, Nordic Animism – Reawakening the Ancient Human Need to be in Relation19 Jan 202200:48:16

We connect with Rune, who lives in Copenhagen. Rune is a leading expert in pre-Christian Nordic Religions & Animism. Born and bred in rural Denmark, Rune explains how hints of Nordic pre-Christian tradition was woven into songs that his grandmother used to sing. This spurred a life-long quest: his need for unearthing and attaining long-lost knowledge of Nordic Indigenous culture. He started with travelling and living as a teen to Norway and learning how the Sami (the last Indigenous peoples of Northern Europe) lived. He soon found that current scholarship in the field was too mundane for him. So, he decided to spend considerable time studying animist religions in West Africa and Brazil and he saw that the peoples from where he was born held similar ancient beliefs, long before the spread of Christianity. Rune brings us through a discussion on relation and connectedness to the "other": the landscape, the animals, other peoples, cycles of the seasons etc. We discuss how death and the dead were uniquely perceived by his Indigenous ancestors and the "carnivalesque" nature of this perception. Just fascinating. We're not going to lie: "Valhalla" was uttered at least once.

89. Marie Henein – Criminal Defence Lawyer / Partner, Henein & Hutchison, LLP / Author – Thriving on Not Knowing What Lies Ahead12 Jan 202200:43:23

Marie joins us from Toronto. Marie is inarguably one of the country's most public and most sought after criminal defence lawyers. She was born of Middle Eastern parents and grew up in Toronto within a tight knit family. Being a serious and studious girl from the get-go, she decided early in life that fighting for the underdog was what she wanted to do. Her deep affection for her uncle brought her to spend much time in NYC as a young adult. It was a world in full contrast to her own life in Toronto and her own cultural upbringing – but it was a world that felt comfortable for her just the same. Laser-focused and with sharp instincts, she also learned to navigate the world with an open mind through her uncle Sami's mentorship. We discuss the perennial battle between objectivity and subjectivity in human-made systems. We hear about her thoughts on toughness, boredom, passions, the dangers of compartmentalizing, therapy, winning, losing and a little about artistic endeavours. And, home-made pasta.

88. Dr. Antonia Mills – Reincarnation Researcher & Scholar /Anthropologist / Author - Seeing Reincarnation as Simple Human Truth05 Jan 202200:38:29

Antonia joins us from Vancouver, Canada. Antonia brings us through her experience in an idyllic US Midwest setting as a little girl, as a curious PhD student at Harvard and as a mother of four moving to Northern British Columbia and living with her adoptive Indigenous family. In the 1980s, Antonia met Dr. Ian Stevenson, an American psychiatrist from the University of Virginia. She became interested in his pioneering work on reincarnation research and the afterlife and she took it on herself. Already having a deep connection to the Beaver, Gitxsan and Witsutit'en peoples in BC she began researching reincarnation within these tribes. This soon had her join Ian Stevenson in becoming a pioneer in her own right in North America on the subject. We discuss the last dreamer/prophet (Charlie Yahey) of the Dane-zaa peoples and her first-hand experience witnessing one of his travels. We chat about the role that the child has in their society as a bridge between the past and the future, the Catholic Church's changed stance on reincarnation and how the Canadian government currently actively funds studies like hers (!). And we hear about a wonderful early life transcendental experience of her own as a little girl. A purely enchanting discussion.

87. Suzanne Giesemann – Former US Naval Commander / Medium / Author – Experiencing our Inter-Connectedness29 Dec 202100:48:38

Suzanne joins us from Hilton Head, South Carolina. She grew up admiring her older brother's career in the Air Force and dreamed of a military career as well. After becoming a Naval Commanding Officer and travelling around the world, she was invited to serve as the aide to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. For several years she was privy to top secret files, she was meeting kings and presidents and she was sitting in meetings with the President of the United States. During the tragic day of 9/11 she flew over Manhattan on Air Force 2 - which was the last aircraft in US airspace. She tells us of her walk through the wreckage at the Pentagon (her home-base) that same day with her superiors. Soon thereafter, she retired and her life changed forever. And soon after, her young stepdaughter Susan was killed and her life changed forever - again. Suzanne awakened eventually to her abilities to see connection with the unseen. We discuss training yourself in untraining … in getting away from the philosophy of "sucking it up" and "stuffing it down". Questioning belief systems was/is key to Suzanne for re-awakening to the reality of expansion and inter-connectedness. "Going from an emptiness that can't be filled to a fullness that can't be contained". This is a must listen back to back with episode 67 with Federico Faggin.

85. Dr. Jonathan Cardella, MD – Endovascular Surgeon / Assistant Professor, Yale / Gardener – Being Comfortable with Feeling Uncomfortable15 Dec 202100:50:51

Jonathan, a Toronto boy, joins us from his office in Connecticut where he plays out his days as an endovascular surgeon and a Yale professor. Jonathan lives and breathes his passion for surgery – and from that passion we discover a lot of what makes him really tick. We delve immediately into themes like seeking approval, the real definition of confidence and his view on the life of servitude that he's chosen. We discuss leadership through humility and hard work and the desire to guide and mentor "Al Lawson-style". We discuss the "filing cabinet of worry", the intimacy of his work and the dangers of pedestalization. Being a former varsity baseball player, Jonathan also weaves his thoughts with us through the metaphor of sport and the lessons of some of its heroes.

But, more importantly we explore what Jonathan is realizing has become important to him. He explains what "legacy" really means for him. And we go deeper into discovery with him about the connection to the earth and being connected to his own human existence – through both the seen and the unseen.

84. Marysia Miernowska – Green Witch / Herbalist / Earth Activist / Author – Being Intentional, Even When "Inefficient"08 Dec 202100:51:51

Marysia joins us from southern California. A "green witch", she is a sought after herbalist and healer in the US. Her own roots lie with a rabble-rousing family in Poland who were active in the Nazi resistance during WW2. Growing up in a matriarchal family, she learned the importance of the plant world and the abundance of the earth from her grandmother. With the understanding that plants create the ecosystem that we are born into, Marysia's philosophy is centered on our intimate connection we have with plants' spiritual essence. We have an engaging chat on plants as elders, teachers, healers and guides. We discuss mountains, the (thin) veil present at both birth and death and wholeness being holiness. Oh, and that's not the half of it …. We talk at length about modern humans' linear view on production and consumption, the ancient wisdom of mountains and our connection with the "dreaming" earth. Throw in some musings about envy, the genius of the self and human creativity and we have an upbeat, expansive talk with a woman of the earth.

83. Nigel Osborne – Composer / Badass Humanitarian / Co-Founder, X-System / Professor – Realizing That Art Always Wins01 Dec 202100:57:28

Nigel joins us from his abode in the UK. Growing up, he celebrated and channeled the  emotionally charged culture of his Scottish and Irish roots, which helped him make music his lifetime muse. A true citizen of the world, Nigel brings us through his journey in life from a wayward youth to internationally renowned composer to musically-focused healer and humanitarian. We walk through his experience as a head-strong youth who turned his back on a rock and roll career with a global music label and decided to live a high energy rock and roll life instead - in Eastern Europe in the early 1970s, no less. Nigel shares with us his run-ins with secret police in communist Poland and his unlikely collaboration with the KGB in the USSR, in the name of shining the light of art to others. Going on to compose for many of the world's greatest music halls and opera houses as an internationally renowned composer, Nigel always kept his eye on helping to heal the world with his creativity as a badass humanitarian - from Bosnia to Uganda to Syria to India and many other places in between.

We talk about the winning nature of art, what the limelight really is to him (as a "refusenik"), the wisdom of music and acoustic ecology of indigenous culture. Nigel also warns us against sentimentalizing "great", imploring us instead to see ourselves as natural creators. Rock and roll, baby.

We immediately dive into the existential, where Rob also feels at home. He shares with us some of his personal experience in childhood where he spent much time in and out of hospitals, leading up to a long, excruciatingly painful battle with cancer in highschool. We have a conversation about Robert's journey with his unique perspective on hope – and the recognition that bad things happen to good people. Healthy and profound perspective is what Rob helps us explore ... staring at a hospital ceiling ... humanity's "de-prioritization" of intuition … inability of modern humans to access beyond the veil … and a certain primal truth through speed. A joy.

81. Dr. Vera Tiesler – Leading Bio-Archaeologist, Mesoamerica / Artist / Professor – Searching For Balance With the Cosmos17 Nov 202100:53:44

Vera joins us from the sunny Yucatan. Her focus has been bioarcheology and archaeology of pre-Hispanic and pre-colonial Maya. As a child, she grew up in Germany under a very demanding upbringing. Being an artist at heart, she wanted to explore what was calling her. As a teen, she "fled" to the US to study Art History at Tulane. From there she decided to pursue her studies in Medicine in both Germany and Mexico. But that was merely the beginning. Enchanted by the warmth of Latin American culture, she dove head first in a life of exploration in archaeological and anthropological adventure graduating from Medical School. Now a leading bioarchaeologist in Latin America, she weaves her skills as a trained physician and her sense of wonder as a social scientist and artist to explore human remains and what they tell us about the ideas of our ancient ancestors. We discuss ancient Indigenous Mesoamerican cultures and how their idea of the cosmos was anchored in the divinity of the human body. We discuss some lessons that the ancient Maya teach us about the realities of both the anguish and the intensity of life, including how modern children should live that intensity, instead of being protected from it. Such an intriguing conversation with Vera about veritas.

80. Russell Targ – Physicist / Remote Viewing Pioneer / Former-CIA Researcher in ESP / Author – Moving Into Timeless Awareness Through Your Own Abilities10 Nov 202101:24:43

Russell joins us from his home in California. Born during the Great Depression, Russell spent his childhood in Chicago and then NYC. A gifted learner, Russell graduated highschool early and decided to study physics in College, setting the groundwork for his career as a scientist. But his real passion already laid elsewhere…. While becoming a pioneer in the 1950s and 1960s in laser development, Russell kept the fire of his passion burning. He was bent on understanding and studying Extrasensory perception (ESP) and built an actual machine for his research "on the side". His work soon caught the interest of NASA and then of the CIA. In the early 1970s, he co-founded the Stanford Research Institute in San Francisco where the CIA fully funded him and his team to investigate the development of psychic abilities. Here he meticulously researched remote viewing and taught senior government officials and hand-picked US Army personnel how to develop their remote viewing skills. Since his research was finally declassified in the last 5 years, Russell has been free to discuss some of the extraordinary experiences as a Remote Viewer researcher and teacher. We talk non-local consciousness, timeless awareness, the "tugging" of the future, lucid dreaming - and untrammelled Milanese women. He has spent 50 years researching and teaching these abilities – abilities that he says are innate in each and every one of us.

79. Joan Koenig – Founder, L'Ecole Koenig American Conservatory & Kindergarten / Musician / Author – Devoting Ourselves to the Whimsical03 Nov 202100:51:32

Joan Koenig has called Paris her home for the last several decades. She grew up playing the piano and falling in love with the flute. Originally from the US, Joan moved often and lived in many states. But one thing that didn't change was her desire to play music. She eventually found herself studying at the prestigious Julliard School in NYC and after graduation embarked upon a journey that brought her to her lay roots in France, have a family and build a business structured on her passion: music. She has spent the last several decades at the forefront of educating children where she has built an school / laboratory for innovative learning and creative entrepreneurship - through the magic of music and dance. In our dicussion, she reminds how and why in the West we have largely "forgotten" that we are all musical. We hear her thoughts on the blurring of the self and in the feeling in communion with others during musical connectedness. As the teaser shows, she shares a transcendental experience where she found herself disappearing, while in the middle of her art. And what's at the centre of it? Listen in….

78. Dr. Nicholas Christakis, MD – Scientist / Physician / Director, Human Nature Lab @ Yale / Author - Being Addicted to Discovery27 Oct 202100:52:49

Nicholas joins Behind Greatness from his office at Yale in Connecticut. Nicholas grew up with two parents who had originally came to the US from Greece as young scholars. One of Nicholas' heroes was his mother, who suffered for two decades with a form of fatal cancer. This experience was instrumental in Nicholas' decision to later become a physician. As a physician, he specialized in palliative care. Having been present at countless amount of deaths, he began to take more interest in what he saw made humanity tick: love and the need for human connection. For the last 20 years, Nicholas has been spearheading a unique scientific adventure with his team at The Human Nature Lab at Yale. For too long scientists have pondered and studied the obvious dark side of human nature, but it is his scientific view that the capacity for love, friendship and teaching are much more powerful than our darkest forces. Armed with the increasing knowledge of how human social networks work, he and his growing inter-disciplinary team of scientists have been on a relentless quest to make it even better. Interestingly, we also discuss the reality of "like at first sight" and Japanese interpretation of neighbourhoods as an analogy for contrast against the Western view of interpersonal relationships. Oh, and Brazilian soccer.

Welcome back to Behind Greatness. We have a chat today with Michael from his home in Butte, Montana. Michael is a professor of biological anthropology at Montana Technological University in Butte where he actively researches hominin evolutionary anatomy, human variation, archaeology, biomedicine, and the UFO phenomenon. His research examines the premise that 'aliens' may be our human descendants, returning from the future to visit and study their own hominin evolutionary past. He brings us through his early fascination with the unknown as a young boy and his personal follow through on his what ifs straight into a life in anthropology – and back beyond. We learn about his experience holding ancient skulls, non-local consciousness and the question on whether or not rocks and mountains are 'alive'. We talk manufactured stigma, telepathic downloads and the support of his university in his quest to investigate the ufo question with both a scientific fastidiousness and an open-minded viewpoint of the world informed by his own mystical experiences.

Straight-up, straight-talk.

See our talks with Archeologist Dr. Vera Tiesler (ep 81) and world renowned Paleontologist Jack Horner (p 158) …. And Jeffrey Kripal (ep 118).

76. Maurizio Gherardini – GM, Fenerbahce SK / Former VP, Toronto Raptors – Turning away from the Motorcycle13 Oct 202100:38:28

Maurizio currently lives in Istanbul where he leads European professional basketball powerhouse Fenerbahce SK as its General Manager. Prior to this he was the first ever non-American VP of an NBA franchise with the Toronto Raptors and one of the most successful GMs ever in Europe. We discuss a journey riddled with serious life-altering, pivotal moments. It all started with a motorcycle dangled in front of him as a "carrot" before he left for the US for a brief stint as a foreign student. After coming back, he soon became GM of the pro basketball team of his home town of Forli, well before the age of 30. This started a decades' long journey that has brought him to embrace the philosophy of an andrenalinic approach to learning, impacting people around him and networking. Maurizio's is a life where pivotal moments were faced head on with the blood of his passion.

75. Dr. Indre Viskontas – Neuroscientist / Opera Singer & Director / Podcaster / Author – Bending Time Through Music06 Oct 202101:00:52

Indre joins us today from San Francisco. Growing up in Toronto she moved to California (for good) as a young adult to figure out her path as an Opera singer, while also on scholarship as a budding neuroscientist. We learn about her evolution as an artist and as a sought-after science communicator … she also hosts two podcasts: "Cadence" since 2017 and the widely acclaimed "Inquiring Minds" since 2013. Indre shares her thoughts on the necessity of facing the "stuck" as part of the creative process and on viewing creativity as a behaviour and an act. Indre addresses how we are all knowledgeable in music in a sense – as either listeners or performers. We also explore her how musicians are able to bend time. And, for good measure, we sprinkle in some talk about remote viewing as a phenomenon she investigated as part of her work on the Oprah Winfrey Network. A melodic discussion to say the least.

74. Anson Henry – Olympian Sprinter / Broadcaster / Content Creator / Podcaster – Being an Observant While Being in the Lane29 Sep 202100:46:14

Anson joins us from London, England. His parents were originally from Jamaica and moved to Canada for a better life. He grew up just outside of Toronto with his sister. He was a natural athlete and in his late teens he found a real passion in sprinting. From there, he took off. Winning most of his competitions in Canada, Anson wanted more. On full scholarship at Washington State in the US, Anson soon became All-American and entered the elite world of top sprinters, keeping that same pace as he went professional. We discuss "elite" and elite "savagery" and the difference between the two. For most of his career, he trained with and raced against the world's top sprinters. Anson describes how he had a front row seat as an observer while always "having a lane in the race". We discuss how the importance of telling the story of sport-journey has become Anson's post-racing calling. We also have fun breaking down the existence of the mind of the sprinter, the altered dimension of emotional existence and the need for athletes to leverage their bodies to attain experiences more other-worldly. Daaamn.

73. Dr. Carl Ruck – Professor, Classical Studies / Authority on Ecstatic Rituals of the god Dionysus / Pioneering Author – Pursuing The Truth of Who You Are22 Sep 202100:50:05

Carl joins us from Boston University. He shares with us how his path changed from pursuing the field of medicine to that of philosophy and the classics. Ever since that pivot in his life, Carl has been dedicating his life to find the truth to our human existence. Over 40 years ago, he pioneered research on the Dionysian mysteries of ancient and classical Greece. He was shunned and ostracized by some of his peers, but pursuing the truth was always more important to Carl than being relevant to current dogmatic beliefs. In this discussion, Carl brings his decades of learning and wisdom from studying the shamanic roots of Western culture – roots that have been unpopular to discuss until very recently. We discuss what our ancient ancestors were discovering about our existence, the prominence of the feminine divine and the Hellenic and pagan roots of modern Christian religious practice …. And there's more: learning the reality of being what you are and also being what you think you are not and learning about how psychotropic medicines played an important part in the development of ancient Greek Philosophy, Mathematics and Art. In case you were wondering, we also discussed the dream state and the direct correlation to the out of body experiences that our Greek, Samothracian and Persian ancestors were actively pursuing to uncover their understanding to human consciousness.

72. Antoni Abad - Digital Artist / Founder – Blind.wiki, Megafone.net, Deaf.city – Moving beyond Social-User to Citizen-Participant15 Sep 202100:53:51

Antoni is based in Barcelona. He grew up Lleida, Spain partly under Franco's totalitarian regime. The harsh political conditions didn't deter Antoni's parents, who chose to live lives dedicated to artistic endeavour. Antoni also realized at a young age that he wished to pursue his artistic curiosity and once he left his home town he began to explore his sculpting craft along with exploring the world outside of Lleida. In the early 90s, he left for Banff, Canada for a brief stint. He arrived with measuring tape and materials and left with something called an email address. From that point on, Antoni's journey took the path of a digital artistic pioneer travelling and showcasing his works all around the globe. Based in Spain, he was also the first to create the world's first digital "social" network – a network that was predicated on a decentralized-view of communication and a view that paid emphasis on participants, not users. We discuss how building platforms for the marginalized, the displaced, the demobilized - all over the world - has been a calling card for his art. Antoni explains how a "citizen's network" is more meaningful than a social media network. We also understand that the artist creates the sublime when the artist sees themselves as a true mediator.

69. Dr. Bruce Greyson, MD – Psychiatrist / NDE Researcher / Co-Founder, IANDS / Author – Dedicating Your Life to Studying What We Don't Understand25 Aug 202100:49:36

Bruce grew up in the suburbs of NYC, where his upbringing was rooted both in healthy skepticism and in a strong curiosity about the material world. His father, a chemist, always urged young Bruce to blaze a trail. As a green intern in the 1970s, one of Bruce's first patients revealed to him a peculiar experience that puzzled him. He habitually wrote off this type of experience with other patients as well - for a little while. Soon enough though, he realized that ignoring these phenomena was a simple choice in taking a dogmatic approach rather than a truly scientific one. So he made a switch. And with that switch he started to blaze a trail – a trail now of 50 years as the globe's prominent scientist in the research and study of the near death experience (NDE). We hear from Bruce his findings about the brain vs the mind and he shares with us his message about making the big advances in science with things that we don't understand. Bruce also tickles us with two experiences he had in dream state that spoke to perhaps something greater. What a treat.

68. Cheryl Bernard – Olympian / CEO, Canada Sports Hall of Fame / Author / Speaker – Living for the Journey, not the Goal18 Aug 202100:40:14

Cheryl was born in a small city near the Rocky Mountains nicknamed "Swan City" and a place originally settled by First Nations tribe the Danezaa. She grew up in a family where everyone pitched in and learned to do everything needed to get things done. With this example – and a little bit of a perennial impatience – Cheryl threw herself into her sports and finished highschool early. With a fierce determination she started a business in her 20s while her friends were travelling and studying. In her 30s she sold her business and focused on her true sport-love. In her 40s, she brought her team to win an Olympic silver in her home country. We learn from Cheryl the importance of playing to win and not playing not to lose and also not fixating on success as the marker of her identity. And, we discover how her real dream is not so far away from the ancient spiritual essence of her home town. A real-people, real salt of the earth discussion.

67. Federico Faggin – Scientist/Engineer/Inventor/Entrepreneur/Author – Knowing by Becoming What We Know11 Aug 202100:58:20

Originally from Vicenza, Italy, Federico was born during WWII. As a little boy his family moved to a pre-industrial area of his region in order to escape the ravages of war. But there, little Federico soon developed a penchant for creating and building machines. As a young scientist, Federico moved to Silicon Valley where he invented and developed the 1st silicon designed micro-processor that was adopted by Intel to become industry standard. He became an entrepreneur and over the decades he founded widely successful companies where he continued to pioneer and invent, including the technology behind the touch pad and touchscreens for phones and tablets. He recounts an extremely profound out of body moment in his life in 1990 that forever changed the way he viewed the world and how he re-prioritized what was important to him. He has since then dedicated his life to supporting the science of consciousness – the marrying of science with spirituality. Get ready for a talk on the self, the quantum realm, the reality of reality, dreaming and consciousness.

Welcome back to Behind Greatness. We sit down with Fr. Francis today who joins us from Molise, Italy. Fr. Francis is an author, a scholar, an expert on Tibetan Buddhism an alchemist and an artist. He lives a life of science and spirituality and we discuss how alchemy plays an important part in his life as a reflection of that balance. We dive into languages and dialects and their interconnectivity to geography and culture, the trek of the snow leopard and a discussion on the most important laboratory on earth. We hear about his mystical experiences as a young man and the wonder that has pushed him since. We learn about his searching for those in Tibet who have experienced the actual dissolution of their physical body and the manifesting of their light body – the so-called rainbow body. And we learn about the wisdom collected along the way.

66. Kenneth Choi – Hollywood Actor – Imagining That You Can04 Aug 202101:02:53

Ken joins us from LA where he lives, works and breathes his life's passion. Having grown up in a conservative immigrant family environment in Chicago, Ken felt that he wanted to explore more and differently than what was expected of him. Being very shy and emotionally-tuned, young Ken also understood that he needed to break out of his environment. But, as he explains, he spiralled downwards for several years into his early adulthood. It took a certain self-realization to have him turn it around. And boy, did he. We discuss with him many of life's lessons that he's learned along the way and how he weaves them into his work: having empathy for others and leading with compassion, the belief in making happen what you want, the confidence in your own creative self, the courage in leaving everything behind to focus on exploration.

65. Raine Maida – Lead Singer, Our Lady Peace / Producer / Tech Founder / Entrepreneur – Reigniting the Sparks from Within28 Jul 202100:52:18

Raine joins us from his studio in LA where he shares with us about growing up in Toronto and how disconnected he felt from artistic purpose – until he wasn't. As a teenager at his boarding school he spent his nights in solitude, devouring music, learning to play guitar and writing songs. When his head-master asked him to cut his hair and quit his band, he knew what he needed to do. Through sheer passion, years of hard work and dedication to his art he went on to lead his rock band Our Lady Peace to sit as one of the most celebrated bands in North America of his era. But that was merely the start of things. Today, Raine is still that man creating music but he is also a conscientious father, a recognized humanitarian and a tech entrepreneur on fire focused on honouring the intellectual property of the artist. We discuss the natural human need to revere the arts and how we need to reverse the stigma of artistic endeavour in our lives. Raine also explains how many of us have let our "creative muscle" atrophy in our lives. We discuss the importance of "flying", of exploring and of re-igniting the sparks of creative imagination from our childhood that have been so often (and methodically?) cut off by culture and curriculum.

64. Mike Sutton - President & CEO at Zulu Alpha Kilo Inc. – Clearing the Way for Creativity21 Jul 202100:53:48

Mike grew up in an idyllic small-town setting near Niagara Falls, enjoying music, frog-hunting, exploring and sports. He decided to pursue his education through sports scholarship in North Carolina and his world opened up forever thereafter. After his India, Thailand and Scotland adventures, he landed back home with no clear path in sight. He decided to move to Toronto, knowing no one and starting from zero. But Mike likes blank canvases. We hear how he learned to listen to his instincts and both plan and "feel" his way through his personal and professional experiences. Today, Mike sees his role as a "path-clearer" for those around him to create and cross the boundaries of the conventional.

63. Bruno D'Amicis – Award-Winning Wilderness & Wildlife Photographer, Speaker, Author – Needing to be in the Here and Now14 Jul 202101:00:08

Bruno grew up in the hustle and bustle, chaotic urban environment of Rome. He recounts with fondness the life-defining experiences as a young boy in his family visits to the dry, hot lands of southern Italy in Puglia and the green abundance of the mountain sides in Abruzzo. Keeping these memories close as he grew older, he moved to Berlin where he launched his career as a conservationist-wilderness-award-winning photographer and author. His accolades with the BBC, National Geographic, UNESCO etc helped propel his work and spread his message to more people than he could imagine as a young boy in Rome dreaming about just this. Spending years studying and observing what the natural world teaches, Bruno shares with us what he has learned from his years in the desert, in the mountains, in the forests and from his beloved wolves. For good measure, we get to discuss a couple of his transcendental experiences and on finding the majesty in the earth's wisdom. We hear from Bruno how we are so closely linked with the living world and how we need to "re-awaken the grammar" in us to reconnect and find the union that has always existed.

62. Dr. Jay Dahman, MD – Pediatric Hospitalist / Humanitarian – Helping Others and Saving Lives as Therapy07 Jul 202100:49:12

Born in Toronto of Syrian descent, Jay split his life of education among Canada, Syria and the USA. Coming from a family of medical practitioners, Jay was also able to see his first live surgery at 6 years of age. We hear about his travails in his path to become a doctor in Canada - a story not so uncommon. And we also hear about his dedication to his patients and to his personal mission of helping those less fortunate. Learning an early lesson from his father about helping those in need, Jay recounts his journey in travelling to Guyana and to war-torn Syria to help other doctors with his expertise. We get to know about his numerous missions to war zone field hospitals and averting spies and bombs all the while. His journey we feel is only just beginning, as Jay explains what other humanitarian pursuit he has now set his eyes on. Inspiring. Just inspiring.

61. Hazel Henderson – Futurist / Founder, Ethical Markets Media / Author – Living By the Golden Rule - Period.30 Jun 202100:47:32

We sit down with Hazel Henderson, a world-renowned Futurist, Activist, Producer, Founder and an economic Iconoclast. We follow Hazel from her upbringing in Bristol, England with a Naturalist mother and a Corporate executive father. She left England as a young woman and soon started her working career in NYC. She found her power in calling for large corporate interests in seeing the value in the other half of the economy: the non-monetized. Since then, over the last 6 + decades Hazel has been a true global leader in helping to shape the idea that the Natural World and the Love Economy constitute at least an equal footing to the Monetized Economy. Insert the Golden Rule and Charles Darwin's actual theory on the development of our species and we learn what makes Hazel really tick.

Game on! As a young red-headed Moore, we hear about his exploration with hockey, acting, stock market couriering and stand-up comedy. We also chat about ego, giving back to your world, cursive writing, good manners … and dinosaurs. A good time was had by all.

59. Rita DeMontis - National Lifestyle & Food Editor, Sun Media / TV & Radio Host / Lady Bountiful – Celebrating the Achievements of Others16 Jun 202100:47:09

Born in France of Sardinian parents, little Rita emigrated to Toronto where she grew up believing she was American for a while. As a child with a joie de vivre, she found inspiration in others who lived without judgement towards others and who gave for their community. As a young woman starting her career, she found that if she faced barriers head-on and with a smile she could reap great learning. A wildly accomplished media professional, we learn that her success in her profession comes from being awake to what's around her while she drives at the truth. But we find that the true source of her success comes from her profound passion of what life gives her: people to help, achievements of others to broadcast, dreams to heed and food to share.

58. Colleen Moorehead - Chief Client Officer at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP / Founder, The Judy Project – Feeling More Whole When Creating09 Jun 202100:49:04

Colleen grew up in Rostock, Ontario (between Toronto & Detroit) where community was everything and farm-work for her was a outlet for fun and creative exploration. Even in this idyllic space Colleen found balance with her desire to "hussle" and grow her natural inclination for business and for working with people. Although strong in the sciences as a high-schooler, she found a path in business that led her to explore the waters of both senior corporate life and an explosive, rip-roaring entrepreneurial adventure as a co-founder of E*Trade in Canada. Shaking the financial world with a new approach to empowering customers via the emerging online world, Colleen saw how important it was – and is – to build community. We discuss how she leverages this not only in her present work, but with future executive leaders in The Judy Project she co-founded. Most importantly, we talk about something that brings Colleen back to her original world of exploration and creative escape in Rostock: the importance of creating those spaces for creative minds to practice, thrive and "feed" the world.

57. Dick Pound – Former Exec, International Olympic Committee / Lawyer / CPA / Olympian / Author - Putting Back into the Well to Help Others02 Jun 202100:46:34

Richard started his journey training as a swimmer in the rainforests of British Columbia isolated from civilization. Having beat out most of his compatriots as a competitive swimmer, he went on to compete at the Olympic, PanAm and Commonwealth games as a young man. Having returned home he put his efforts into his books to gain designation as a CPA and subsequently as a tax lawyer in Montreal. In the meantime, as a retired Olympian, the Young Pound was invited by other Olympic committee elders to join and take notes for their meetings (reference "information is power" message). This was the beginning of a decades-long adventure that took him to being a senior member of the IOC – overseeing a seismic shift in how the Olympics raised funds, how it redistributed the funds and how it developed a global anti-doping strategy. We discuss creative input in fiction writing vs non-fiction writing and both their similarities and differences in the philosophy of telling story. We discuss the wisdom in giving back to those who are looking for the same help that he once received throughout his own life's journey. And, we discuss the significance in achieving ascended status through the unity of community. A strong "memo to self"-inspired conversation.

182. Pacho Flores - Trumpeter, Composer, Dreamer - Seeing the Sound27 Feb 202401:02:34

Welcome back to Behind Greatness. We are honoured today to be speaking with Pacho Flores from Valencia, Spain, in his first interview in English. A native of San Cristobal, Venezuela and an early student of El Sistema, Pacho is a globally recognized trumpeter. He is also a leader in the blending of Latin American sounds in his compositions, with composers drafting pieces explicitly for his style. He is also the lead artist in residence with the world's leading brass instrument manufacturer Stomvi. He hear about his thoughts on genius v crazy, investing for quality, the miracle of Jose Antonio Abreu's El Sistema and the joy that the Southern Hemisphere brings to the world (of music). We learn about the trumpet as the big protagonist in music and Latin American sound, the joy and the sorrow it emotes and his personal/professional mission to show Latin culture through his repertoire. We discuss why music is "the queen of the arts", the role of empathy in music and why dreaming for Pacho is pivotal in creating pathways.

Our warmest abrazo to our friend Dr. Vera Tiesler (ep 81) and a tip of the hat to Joan Koenig (ep 79) and Wynton Marsalis (ep126).

55. Dr. Anthony Cicoria (MD, PhD) – Orthopedic Surgeon / NDEr / Composer – Contributing to Understanding Through Music19 May 202101:06:41

Dr. Cicoria grew up in Upstate New York, a rambunctious boy with a streak of independence, enjoying life as a "free range chicken". At the behest of a coach and of his father, he enrolled in a military college. But from there he decided to pursue a career in science and medicine and a story peppered with a string of "God winks". At 42, he was hit by lightning. His heart stopped and he left his body. He brings us through exactly what he experienced on the other side, what he saw, what he became and how that changed him forever. He was resuscitated by a stranger (a nurse!) who brought him back to life. Miraculously, Dr. Cicoria was soon able to return to work where he shared his experience with very few people and continued to practice medicine. However, the experience left him with a dogged need to compose the music that was left inside him after his experience. Being consumed by this, a composer was re-born … as was a journey to seek the truth. What. A. Story.

54. Rob Knesaurek - Group VP @ NHL, Youth Development & Industry Growth Fund – Learning How to Suspend Judgement12 May 202100:41:28

Rob joins us from Toronto where he currently spends his time working as a senior leader in the NHL (National Hockey League). A natural story teller, Rob brings us through his journey as an only child of a Croatian father and Jamaican mother, and growing up playing with the neighbourhood bullies and forming life-long relationships, to playing hockey at competitive levels, to the heart-breaking split of his parents, to coaching the national hockey team in Australia, and to CEOing a Pharmacare company before joining the NHL. We learn his take on not over-indexing energy in your work role vs your personal roles in the empty "race to relevance". We hear his thoughts on playing the role of actor with the balance of projecting your authentic self. Rob brings us to present day as he reflects on how important it is to have a mindset focused on the "now" versus "what's next" and how growth and failure need to co-exist. And most importantly, we discuss how suspending judgement opens the door to learning, exploring self-development, and enjoying the human quest for truth. Rob #2 is not short on interesting stories and positive vibes.
