#261 - I’m Done Hunting Deer Like Everyone Else02 oct. 202600:24:21

I’m done hunting deer like everyone else.

It’s easy to get caught up in what everyone else is doing — the newest tactics, the perfect setups, the latest gear, and the idea that there’s only one “right” way to hunt mature bucks.

But this season, I’m changing my approach.

In this episode of Before the Echo, I talk about why I’m simplifying the way I hunt, trusting what I’ve learned through experience, and making decisions based on what’s actually happening in the woods instead of what everyone else says I should be doing.

We’ll talk about hunting pressure, mobile hunting, overthinking setups, trusting your instincts, and why sometimes becoming a better deer hunter means doing LESS — not more.

If you’ve ever felt like deer hunting has become way more complicated than it needs to be, this episode is for you.

Drop a comment below: What’s one thing you’ve changed about the way you hunt over the years?

#260 - What Are You Actually Trying to Accomplish This Deer Season?30 sept. 202600:35:36

What does a successful deer season actually look like?

For most deer hunters, the obvious answer is killing a big buck. But if that's the only way we measure success, we can do almost everything right for an entire season and still walk away feeling like we failed.

In this episode of Before the Echo, I’m sitting down to talk about my goals for this deer season—and why I think setting the RIGHT goals can completely change the way we hunt.

We’re talking about:

• My personal goals for this deer season

• Outcome goals vs. goals you can actually control

• Becoming a better deer hunter instead of simply hunting more

• Why we shouldn't let social media change our standards

• Hunting new areas and getting outside our comfort zones

• Balancing deer hunting with family and the things that matter most

• Why killing a buck doesn't have to determine whether your season was successful

Obviously, I want to kill a mature buck. We all want to punch a tag. But I don't want one dead deer to determine whether hundreds of hours spent scouting, hunting, learning, and making memories were worth it.

So here's my question for you:

**What is YOUR #1 goal for this deer season—and it can't just be “kill a big buck”?**

Drop it in the comments. I want to hear it.

Episode #26 - Jesus Was Never Out of Control | John 1824 sept. 202600:45:34

John 18 takes us into one of the darkest nights in the Gospel of John—but through every moment, we see that Jesus is still completely in control. In this episode of Rooted & Raised, we walk through John 18 together, beginning with Jesus’ arrest in the garden and the incredible moment when the soldiers step back and fall to the ground after He says, “I am He.”We also look at Peter’s attempt to defend Jesus with a sword, Peter’s three denials, Jesus’ questioning before the high priest, and His powerful conversation with Pilate about His Kingdom and the truth. There’s a huge contrast throughout this chapter: Peter is afraid, religious leaders are plotting, Pilate is conflicted, and the crowd chooses Barabbas—but Jesus remains steady through it all.John 18 reminds us that Jesus wasn’t simply a victim of the events happening around Him. He knew what was coming, willingly stepped forward, and continued toward the cross. In this episode, we discuss:• Why did the soldiers fall to the ground when Jesus said, “I am He”?• Why did Jesus stop Peter from fighting?

#259 - What I’d Do If I Had ZERO Hunting Spots This Season24 sept. 202600:25:57

What would you do if you woke up tomorrow and EVERY hunting spot you had was gone?

No permission. No familiar public-land spots. No backup property. You’re starting completely from ZERO.

In this episode of Before the Echo, I’m breaking down exactly what I would do to find new places to hunt and still have a successful deer season. We’ll talk about finding overlooked public land, knocking on doors for permission, using your network, scouting new ground quickly, and why learning how to FIND good hunting spots may be more valuable than having one great property.

🎁 PLUS — THE FIRST GIVEAWAY STARTS TODAY!

One person is going to win a pair of Hawke Vantage HD binoculars! Watch the episode to find out how to enter.

Let me know in the comments: If you lost ALL of your hunting spots tomorrow, would you start on PUBLIC LAND or start knocking on doors for PRIVATE PERMISSION — and WHY?

#258 - 10 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started Deer Hunting19 sept. 202600:33:52

After years of deer hunting, I’ve realized that some of the advice I once treated like gospel probably made hunting harder than it needed to be.In this episode of Before the Echo, I’m breaking down 10 things I wish I knew earlier about deer hunting—from hunting pressure and wind direction to gear, stand locations, mature bucks, and waiting for the “perfect” conditions. Some of these are lessons I learned the hard way.The biggest takeaway? There are very few absolute rules in deer hunting. What works on one property, for one hunter, or for one buck might be completely wrong somewhere else.Whether you’re brand new to deer hunting or you’ve been chasing whitetails for decades, hopefully there’s something here that makes you think differently about how you approach the woods this fall.Drop a comment: What’s one piece of deer hunting advice you wish you would’ve ignored?🤝 BEFORE THE ECHO PARTNERSLatitude Outdoors — Mobile hunting gear, saddles, climbing sticks, platforms & packsUse code BTEShop Latitude OutdoorsASIO Gear — Purpose-built whitetail hunting apparelUse code ECHO15Shop ASIO GearHawke Optics — Binoculars, rangefinders, scopes & hunting opticsUse code BTEShop Hawke OpticsThank you to these companies for supporting Before the Echo and helping make this content possible. If you enjoy the episode, subscribe to Before the Echo, hit the like button, and share it with another deer hunter.Same woods. #256 - This Deer Sign Matters More Than Rubs & Scrapes12 sept. 202600:34:31

Most deer hunters know how to spot a big rub, a giant scrape, or a heavily used trail—but some of the most important deer sign is the stuff hunters walk right past.

In this episode of Before the Echo, I break down the subtle clues I pay attention to when scouting and hunting whitetails. We’re talking about lone buck tracks, faint secondary trails, small rubs in the right places, overlooked bedding, vegetation changes, browse, staging areas, and even what the absence of sign can tell you.

The goal isn't to find the MOST deer sign. It's to find the sign that actually tells you where a buck is coming from, where he's going, and how you can kill him.

If you're scouting public land or trying to get tighter to mature bucks this season, this is one you'll want to hear.

#255 - Nobody Wants to Admit This About Deer Hunting09 sept. 202600:29:24

Nobody Wants to Admit This About Deer Hunting…

Deer hunting has a way of exposing the truth. We can spend all year talking about strategies, gear, mature bucks, public land, and what we're going to do differently—but once the season gets here, things don't always go according to plan.

In this episode of Before the Echo, I’m talking about some of the uncomfortable truths that deer hunters don't always want to admit. The mistakes we make, the excuses we tell ourselves, and the things that actually matter when it comes to becoming a better and more successful hunter.

Whether you hunt public land, private land, from a saddle, treestand, compound, recurve, or rifle, I think there’s something in this conversation that every deer hunter can relate to.

Drop a comment and let me know: What’s one truth about deer hunting that nobody wants to admit?

#254 - The #1 Deer Hunting Advantage Nobody Talks About05 sept. 202600:26:36

What if one of the biggest advantages in deer hunting has nothing to do with scouting, wind, thermals, or the latest piece of gear?

In this episode of Before the Echo, I’m talking about something that rarely gets discussed: COMFORT.

We’ve almost glorified being miserable as deer hunters. Freezing feet, aching backs, uncomfortable stands, soaked clothing — somehow we’ve convinced ourselves that suffering makes us better hunters.

But does it?

I believe being comfortable can actually make you a more effective deer hunter. When you’re comfortable, you stay longer. You move less. You remain mentally focused. And when that buck finally shows up, you’re ready to make the shot.

In this episode, I cover:

• Why comfort can mean more time in the woods

• How being uncomfortable creates unnecessary movement

• Why physical comfort affects your mental focus

• Choosing a stand, saddle, or setup that works for YOU

• Why clothing can matter more than expensive hunting gear

• The little things that make all-day sits easier

• Being comfortable and confident with your weapon

• Why you should stop choosing gear to impress other hunters

Being miserable isn’t a hunting tactic.

Sometimes the best hunting strategy isn’t figuring out how to get closer to the deer — it’s figuring out how to stay in the woods long enough for the deer to come to you.

Episode #25 - Jesus Prayed for You Before the Cross | John 1704 sept. 202600:25:07

What was on Jesus’ heart just hours before He was arrested and crucified? In John 17, we get an incredible look into one of the most personal prayers Jesus ever prayed. He prays for Himself, for His disciples, and then He looks ahead and prays for those who would one day believe through their message — including us.In this episode of the Rooted & Raised Podcast, we walk through John 17 and talk about what Jesus’ prayer teaches us about eternal life, living in the world without becoming like the world, being sanctified by truth, Christian unity, and what Jesus ultimately desires for His followers. One of the biggest things that stood out to us is this: Jesus didn't pray that His followers would be removed from the world. He prayed that God would keep them faithful while they were in it.And then in John 17:20, the prayer becomes incredibly personal:Jesus begins praying for future believers. That means this isn't only a prayer for Peter, John, and the disciples sitting with Him that night. It's a prayer that reaches all the way to believers today.Grab your Bible, open to John 17, and study it with us.If this episode encourages you, consider subscribing and sharing it with someone who could use it.Scripture: John 17Rooted & Raised Podcast#John17 #Jesus #BibleStudy #ChristianPodcast #Christianity #Bible #Faith #Prayer

#251 - I’m Changing the Way I Deer Hunt This Year27 août 202600:16:27

This year, I’m changing the way I deer hunt.

After years of chasing mature bucks, scouting, running cameras, trying new gear, and constantly looking for the next piece of information, I’ve realized that sometimes becoming a better hunter isn’t about doing more—it’s about knowing when to do less.

In this episode of Before the Echo, I break down what I’m doing differently this deer season. I talk about putting less pressure on my best spots, trusting my instincts, being more calculated with my decisions, and—when the time is right—being willing to get aggressive and make a move.

I also get into something that has become more important to me over the years: not measuring an entire hunting season by the size of the antlers at the end of it.

I still want to kill mature bucks. I still want to improve. But this year, I want to hunt with more purpose, trust what I’ve learned, enjoy the process, and stop overcomplicating something I love doing.

What are YOU doing differently this deer season? Let me know in the comments!

#248 - They Gave Me their Most Expensive Bow... Here's the Truth12 août 202600:20:18

Bow prices have gotten pretty wild over the last few years. #247 - You’re About to Ruin Your Best Hunting Spot11 août 202600:24:43

Are you scouting too much?

As deer season gets closer, it’s easy to feel like you need to keep checking cameras, looking for fresh sign, moving stands, trimming shooting lanes, and making one more trip into your best spots.

But at some point, scouting stops helping you and starts hurting you.

In this episode of Before the Echo, I talk about why sometimes the best thing you can do for your best hunting spot is simply leave it alone.

We’ll get into trail cameras, hunting pressure, bedding areas, access routes, historical information, and why constantly needing confirmation that a buck is still there could ultimately cost you an opportunity at him.

You’ve done the scouting. You know the terrain. You know where the deer want to be. At some point, you have to trust what you’ve learned and stop putting unnecessary pressure on the very spot you’re trying to hunt.

So when does scouting become too much? And how do you know when it’s finally time to back out and leave a spot alone?

Let’s talk about it.

#246 - He Got Ticketed... Then Everything Changed07 août 202601:05:21

What started as a citation on a public wildlife area turned into something much bigger.

In this episode, Derek Norwood shares the full story of what happened, why he believed the ticket was unjustified, how the citation was eventually dismissed, and how the entire situation led to changes in the way the wildlife area is patrolled today.

Whether you hunt public land every season or are just getting started, this conversation highlights why knowing the regulations, standing up for what's right, and treating conservation officers with respect can make a real difference.

This is a story every public land hunter should hear.

#245 - The Hunting Industry Doesn't Want You to Hear This05 août 202600:31:43

Has the hunting industry convinced us that we need more gear...or have we forgotten what actually makes a great deer hunter?

In this episode, I share some thoughts that honestly could cost me a few dollars. After years of working with hunting companies, testing products, and spending countless hours in the woods, I've come to one conclusion:

We've started confusing buying gear with becoming better hunters.

This isn't an attack on the hunting industry. There are incredible companies building products that make hunting more enjoyable and more efficient. But no piece of gear can replace woodsmanship, time in the woods, patience, or experience.

We talk about:

Why gear isn't the same as skill

How social media has changed deer hunting

The biggest mistake I see hunters making

Why comparison is hurting more hunters than helping them

What actually leads to consistent success on mature bucks

The skills that no amount of money can buy

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Do you think hunters are too focused on buying gear instead of becoming better hunters?

#240 - The Hunting Advice That's Ruining Deer Hunters17 juil. 202600:39:22

Everyone has hunting advice... but not all of it will help you kill more deer.

In this episode of Before the Echo, I'm talking about some of the most common advice shared across YouTube, podcasts, and social media—and why following it without thinking can actually make you a worse hunter.

This isn't about calling anyone out. Many of the hunters featured have forgotten more about deer hunting than I'll ever know. The point is that every successful hunter has built a system around their experiences, their ground, and their style of hunting. What works for one person may not work for you.

In this episode we'll discuss:

Why copying another hunter can slow your progress.

The difference between principles and tactics.

The danger of "one-size-fits-all" hunting advice.

How social media has changed deer hunting.

Why building your own system is the fastest path to becoming a better hunter.

👇 I'd love to hear from you in the comments:

What's one piece of hunting advice that everyone repeats—but you don't completely agree with?

• Why consistency beats chasing the latest trend.

I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. What's one truth about mature bucks that you've learned the hard way?

#263 - The Real Reason Hunters Fight About Crossbows24 juin 202600:26:23

Crossbows have become one of the most divisive topics in the hunting community. But after reading hundreds of comments and having countless conversations, I've come to realize that hunters aren't really fighting about crossbows.

They're fighting about challenge.

They're fighting about identity.

They're fighting about what hunting means to them.

In this episode, I dive into the real reasons hunters turn on each other over equipment choices and why these conversations often become much bigger than the gear itself. We discuss challenge vs. success, convenience vs. fulfillment, and whether making something easier always makes it better.

This isn't an episode about telling anyone how they should hunt. It's an honest conversation about why we care so much about how other people hunt and what we might learn from those disagreements.

I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Could Oregon become the first state to effectively ban hunting, fishing, and trapping?

In this episode of Before the Echo, I break down Oregon Initiative Petition 28 (IP28), also known as the PEACE Act. • Why hunters across America are paying attention

• The 120,000+ signatures submitted to qualify for the ballot

• Potential impacts on conservation funding

• Wildlife management concerns

• Why this debate extends far beyond Oregon

• What hunters can do to get involved

Episode #17 - You Can See… But Still Be Blind | John 9 Breakdown28 avr. 202600:46:46

What if you could see… but still miss the truth right in front of you?

In this episode, we break down one of the most powerful miracles in the Gospel of John—when Jesus heals the man born blind. But this chapter is about way more than physical sight. It’s about spiritual blindness, pride, and what it really means to see Jesus for who He is.

The religious leaders had perfect vision… yet they couldn’t recognize the Son of God standing right in front of them. Meanwhile, a man who had never seen anything ends up seeing more clearly than all of them.

This chapter will challenge you to ask:

* Am I truly seeing Jesus… or just going through the motions?

* Is pride keeping me spiritually blind?

* What happens when Jesus opens your eyes?

If you’ve ever wrestled with doubt, truth, or what it really means to follow Christ—this one hits deep.

---

**In this episode:**

* The healing of the blind man (John 9:1–12)

* The Pharisees’ response and spiritual blindness

* Bold faith in the face of pressure

* What it means to truly “see” Jesus

This chapter forces a decision.

👉 Are you walking in truth… or just believing you are?

We dive into:

What true freedom really means

Why truth offends people

The difference between belief and discipleship

And how this applies to your life right now

This isn’t just theology — this is personal.

Where do I actually stand with Jesus?
