Non-musical history for today: 1954 – United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower gave his "domino theory" speech during a news conference. A standard theory in the United States from the 1950s to the 1980s, especially in the context of the Cold War. It suggested that if one country in a region came under the influence of communism, then the surrounding countries would follow. Successive United States administrations used it during the Cold War to justify American intervention worldwide. But... we'll just let Russia take over Ukraine, right? Non-musical history for today: 1882 – American Old West: Robert Ford killed Jesse James. Couldn't have happened to a nicer a-hole. But, Ford was no angel, either. He had been part of the James-Younger Gang and secretly colluded with the Missouri Governor, Thomas Crittenden, to capture James and bring him in. Ford panicked, thinking that James was onto him, and when James got on a chair to clean a dusty painting, Ford shot James in the back of the head. Ford wired Gov. Crittenden to collect the reward. He and his brother were then charged with first-degree murder. They were arrested, charged, tried, and convicted to hang in a single day, but Crittenden pardoned them and said he knew they were going to kill James instead of bringing him in. That led to a scandal since it showed a chief executive could have been involved in the conspiracy to murder. Too interesting, I'd say. Non-musical history for today: 1873 – The White Star steamer SS Atlantic sank off the coast of Nova Scotia, killing 547 in one of the worst marine disasters of the 19th century. Man, White Star had it bad. Atlantic in 1873; Republic sank after colliding with SS Florida from Italy in 1909; Brittanic was sunk in 1916 by a German mine. Non-musical history for today: 1855 – "Border Ruffians" from Missouri invaded Kansas and forced the election of a pro-slavery legislature. Crimes committed by border ruffians included electoral fraud, intimidation, assault, property damage, and murder. The actions were somewhat the basis of the Civil War. Committing crimes led to what is collectively known as "Bleeding Kansas,"  many border ruffians took pride in their reputation as criminals. Non-musical history for today: 1812 – A political cartoon in the Boston-Gazette coined the term "gerrymander" to describe oddly shaped electoral districts designed to help incumbents win reelection. "Gerrymander" is a portmanteau (I like that word) of a salamander and former Vice President of the United States, Elbridge Gerry. Gerry, as governor of Massachusetts in 1812, signed a bill that created a partisan district in the Boston area that was compared to the shape of a mythological salamander (my understanding is that it had wings and everything). Oddly enough, Elbridge Gerry wasn't a fan of the practice. One of the worst gerrymandered areas in the country currently is right here in North Carolina. The whole state is ridiculous. Non-musical history for today: 1765 – The British Parliament passed the Stamp Act that introduced a tax to be levied directly on its American colonies. The purpose of the tax was to pay for British military troops stationed in the American colonies after the French and Indian War, but the colonists had never feared a French invasion, to begin with, and they contended that they had already paid their share of the war expenses.[4] Colonists suggested that it was actually a matter of British patronage to surplus British officers and career soldiers who should be paid by London. Non-musical history for today: 1945 – Adolf Hitler issued his Decree Concerning Demolitions in the Reich Territory (aka "Nero Decree"), ordering all industries, military installations, shops, transportation facilities, and communications facilities in Germany to be destroyed. What a d*ck! It came to be known as the Nero Decree, which refers to the emperor Nero, who is said to have been the architect of the burning of Rome in 64AD. Luckily, his lieutenant, Albert Speer, purposely disobeyed the order. I guess ol' Addy decided if he couldn't have it, no one else could. Non-musical history for today: 1985 – Serial killer Richard Ramirez, aka the "Night Stalker," committed the first two murders in his Los Angeles murder spree. I am fascinated by serial killers. Not in a "I'm going to become one" sense, but just that the whole thing is quite interesting. He was beaten by around 10 civilians when he attempted to do stupid stuff in their neighborhood. They held him down until the police could arrive. He ended up on Death Row but died from complications secondary to B-cell lymphoma. He had also been affected by "chronic substance abuse and chronic hepatitis C viral infection." His body was not claimed, so it was cremated. Hey! Also, traditionally St. Patrick's Day is a day for public celebration, jubilation, etc. Please be careful out there this evening. Non-musical history for today: 1927 – Samuel "Roxy" Rothafel opened the Roxy Theatre in New York City. It was the largest movie theatre ever opened at the time (a capacity of a whopping 5,920). The first film shown was the Gloria Swanson silent picture, The Love of Sunya. It was closed on March 29, 1960, and demolished. It became part of the Time-Life Building (or the ever-boring 1271 Avenue of the Americas as it is known now), part of the broader Rockefeller Centre complex. Non-musical history for today: 1629 – Charles I dissolved the Parliament of England, beginning the eleven years known as the "Personal Rule." This was when King Charles I ruled as an autocratic absolute monarch without recourse to Parliament. Charles claimed he was entitled to do this under the royal prerogative and had a divine right. Non-musical history for today: 1868 – Japanese samurai kill 11 French sailors in the port of Sakai, Osaka. The samurai were disbanded in 1870 and designated to the Shizoku (a distinct class between the kazoku and heimin (commoners) with no special class privileges). The title was solely on the register. Non-musical history for today: 1836 – After a thirteen-day siege by an army of 3,000 Mexican troops, the 187 Texas volunteers, including frontiersman Davy Crockett and Colonel Jim Bowie, defending the Alamo, were killed, and the fort was captured. The Texians took it back a little over a month later. Remember the Alamo... and the state that wanted to be free of Mexico so it could own slaves. That's two countries they abandoned. Non-musical history for today: 1770 – Five Americans, including Crispus Attucks, were fatally shot by British troops in an event that would contribute to the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War five years later. This is known as the Boston Massacre. Stephanie and I stood at the site in 2018, and a particular wind came around us; a chill followed, and I thought I could almost hear the gunshots. I wondered how we could have a military base in Cuba when we can't go to Cuba and Cuba probably wants us out. What do they get in the lease? It's an annual ration of gold. All the numbers I could find was that in 1974, it was about $4000 a year. I'm surprised that Cuba hasn't tried (harder) to get out of the deal. Especially now. Non-musical history for today: 1945 – About 30,000 United States Marines landed on the island of Iwo Jima to start the battle of Iwo Jima. That battle went on for around five weeks. The Japanese Army positions on the island were heavily fortified, with a dense network of bunkers, hidden artillery positions, and a shload of tunnels. The American ground forces were supported by extensive naval artillery and had complete air supremacy provided by U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviators throughout the battle. An anomaly of war, the American casualties were 3-to-1 compared to that of the Japanese. Yet, persistence and attrition finally won out.
