Beers and Beards Episode 158: Millpond Dunkes Bier30 Aug 202401:10:03

rman beer and upcoming Oktoberfest activities.

Dunkes Bier is a German Style Pilsner made from the authentic, 188-years old, Schönberger family recipe from Millstadt’s Sister City, Gross-Bieberau, Germany founded in 787.
In their ancient Odenwälder dialect, “Dunkes” is a friendly word for a person from Gross-Bieberau. Schönberger bierbraurie was founded in 1835 but closed it many years ago.
We named this beer in honor of that deep tradition as Millstadt was founded in 1836 about the time ancestors of many current Millstadt residents immigrated here from Gross-Bieberau.
We brew Dunkes Bier to preserve the cultural bier heritage of Gross-Bieberau and honor our own ancestry.

We also give our NFL preview, and Gary talks about his flag football coaching debut. David talks about his trip to Second Sight Spirits and going to 3 concerts in 3 weeks, and more.

Beers and Beards Episode 157: Urban Roots Nothing is Certain30 Jul 202401:05:04

It's the end of July, so that means it's Oktoberfest season. But David isn't ready to drink one just yet, so he drinks Urban Roots Nothing is Certain, which he got from our new sponsor Beer Drop. Gary breaks out the Old Forester 86.

Urban Roots Nothing is Certain is a black lager with an ominous can. It pours dark as night, and has a nice roasty backbone with a smooth finish.

We also chat about one of our favorite stories of the year: Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout variants are announced. We are a little underwhelmed with the offerings this year - maybe it's a down year after they went all out for the 30th anniversary last year?

We also chat about craft beer declining in the first half of 2024 and why that may be, and Larceny gets a rebrand.

Beers and Beards Episode 154: Traveller Whiskey and Narrow Path Old Fashioned28 Jun 202401:14:54

After an extended break, we're back. This week Gary breaks out the Traveller Whiskey, while David drinks Narrow Path Old Fashioned.

Traveller Whiskey is a collaboration between Grammy award winner Chris Stapleton and Buffalo Trace. The blended whiskey has complex aromas of vanilla, aged fruit and buttery shortbread rounded off by caramel and a touch of oak. The palate has just a touch of sweetness, followed by spice, toasted nut and oak flavors, with a robust finish.

Narrow Path Old Fashioned is a beer inspired by the popular cocktail. It's an amber lager with blood orange peels, Luxardo cherries & bourbon soaked oak chips.

We're back this week with a new episode, and David drinks a beer that is a collaboration between two of his favorite breweries, as Brink and Fretboard came together to produce Electric Llama.

Brink and Fretboard Electric Llama is a Bavarian Style IPA. This Bavarian IPA is moderate strength India Pale Ale made uniquely Bavarian by the use of new varietal German hops. Late additions of Tettnang and Calista hops give this ale notes of intense fruit and berries.

Gary also tells us a great story about how he got a private tour of the location of JFK's assassination when he was in Dallas.

We're back after a short hiatus and David celebrates by drinking Belleflower Finch and Thistle.

David fell in love with Belleflower Brewing when he visited Portland, Maine, and was excited to see that they now distribute to Ohio. Belleflower Finch and Thistle is a dry hopped New England IPA, pouring pale golden hazy with aromas of big papaya, kiwi, pineapple, and stone fruit that will make you long for summer. The strong pale ale opens with flavors of grapefruit and other tropical citrus and stone fruit for a crispy taste that finishes with some light malt sweetness.

We survived the Facebook outage of 2024. That means go find us and like the page. This week we gear up and look ahead to St. Patrick's Day. David gets that good red beer in Conway’s Irish Ale. It takes him back to after prom getting a sixer of some Killians.

In a plot twist, Gary has Karrikin's Bourbon Lemonade. Should have been refreshing but you'll just have to hear him tell you how it is.

A new top bourbon was crowned by Barleycorn, whatever that is. Is it legit?

Gary has a wheated bourbon from Owensboro, strangely similar to last episodes, down the the distillery number. Anyway, KY 10 is on tap. It's ok. It'll get you drunk.

Gary has some Jim Beam Black Extra Aged. That extra char, extra aging is just up his alley and was a hit.

There were Pappy pours at cost on Black Friday, the downfall of some craft breweries and of course some football talk.

Streetside Friendship Bracelet is a Taylor Swift themed beer that is an 8% West Coast IPA that the Cincinnati brewery brewed in collaboration with their friends from Columbus in Derive Brewing and Forbidden Root.

Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel is twice barreled for added complexity. Toasted Barrel takes their award-winning Small Batch Bourbon to new heights. After it's fully matured, they finish this Bourbon in a second, custom toasted new oak barrel, where it’s left to develop even more sweet oak flavor.

In addition to those drinks, we also chat about these news stories:

Gary and David also talk about the cheating scandal at Michigan, and more.

Beers and Beards Episode 134: North Coast - Old Stock Ale and Old Forester 187021 Jul 202301:15:09

Should we go to an Offspring concert. Maybe that's the main takeaway this week. Listen, we start talking about 2020 movies and Covid but we do drink and Gary gets drunk

David has North Coast's Old Stock Ale and he's not as complimentary as he usually is. It's beer though so he powers through.

Gary had a little virus the first time he tried this bourbon but how do you go wrong with Old Forester. This week he has a generous sample of 1870 90 proof and it goes off the rails.

Is Morgan Wallen good?

Hooters has some whiskey. Does it taste good? Who is to say.

Steph Curry is a man who drinks bourbon that is reasonably priced but it's his own so try it. We haven't .

Beers and Beards Episode 131: Larceny & Esoteric Celestial13 May 202301:03:58

What do you do when you have time and resources as a young man, you run a marathon like David McKinney. This week we talk about how Mother Nature tried to sabotage him but he persevered and came out with a new personal best. Gary was in Dallas and got no activity other than talking alot.

A life goal would be having so much beer delivered to your house that the government thought you were selling it. Turns out that's exactly what happened to Dale Earnhardt Jr. back in the day.

Will Oak run out for the bourbon industry? They are burning through some wood for sure.

One of us is making a stop in Maui next week, You decide who that is.

David stays local this seek with Esoteric's Celestial, a pale ale that just hits the spot. Gary went to the archives to sip on one of his favorites , Larceny. The wheated bourbon also hits the spot.

Beers and Beards Episode 130: Perennial Intentionally Indulgent and Evan Williams Single Barrel27 Apr 202301:11:08

We're back on our normal game this week as David drinks Perennial Intentionally Indulgent and Gary revisits an old favorite in Evan Williams Single Barrel.

The 2022 version of Intentionally Indulgent from St. Louis' Perennial Artisan Ales is an Imperial Stout with tiramisu inspired ingredients including vanilla, Sump coffee, and decadent chocolate sauce and brewed in collaboration with 2nd Shift Brewery.

Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage from Heaven Hill Distillery is 7-8 years old and comes in at 86 proof.

We also discuss the new list of the top 50 craft breweries by volume that was released by the Brewers Association, and this year featured a few surprises. The top five were all the same from last year, but fast-growing non-alcoholic craft brewery Athletic Brewing jumped 14 spots from 27th to 13th. Bell's is no longer ranked after being purchased last year by Lion/Kirin, and Cincinnati's Rhinegiest moved up five spots from 28th to 23rd. Craft beer gained share of the overall beer market from 13.1 to 13.2% but the overall beer market shrank by 3%. There were also 549 new brewery openings and 319 closings.

There's also news this week that the bourbon industry could be worth $12.8 billion by 2031, up from $7.8 billion in 2021.

And in a story that we discussed just to say the name of the bourbon is that Furman University released their own private label bourbon called FU All The Time.

Beers and Beards Episode 129: Rhinegeist Hustle and Happy Dad Seltzer18 Apr 202301:09:59

We’re back after a short break as David drinks Rhinegiest Hustle while Gary tries a Happy Dad Seltzer in fruit punch flavor.

David talks about baseball starting a few weeks ago, and how Cincinnati has an abundance of baseball-themed beers. One such beer is Rhinegiest Hustle, an 6% IPA with notes of citrus, peach, tangerine, and mango.

In keeping with the baseball talk, we chat about how MLB teams are extending beer sales longer due to the new pitch clock shortening games.

We also talk about a famous Kentucky priest releasing an extremely rare barrel pick from Willett, and how two bottles are already reserved for the pope and Shaq. We also try to decide if we can think of two more famous people than those two.

We also debut the new hit game show “bourbon or baby food” where David reads a description and Gary tries to decide if it describes bourbon (or whiskey) or baby food.

Happy Dad Seltzer has 1 gram of sugar, 100 calories, and is gluten-free.

Beers and Beards Episode 128: Christian Moerlein Lager and Woodford Reserve Wheat Whiskey06 Apr 202301:04:51

This week we have a doozy of a show for you as Gary drinks Woodford Reserve Wheat Whiskey while David has Christian Moerlein Lager.

Woodford Reserve Wheat Whiskey has wheat as the dominant grain, making up 52% of the mash bill. It also has malt, corn, and rye, and boasts fruit and floral flavors. It comes in at 90 proof and has a spicy palate with a dry finish.

Christian Moerlein Lager is a traditional lager brewed with malted barley, noble hops and pure water true to the German reinheitsgebot. David tells about the new owners of the Moerlein brand and how they are reviving not only that brand, but also Little Kings and Hudepohl and also renovating three historic breweries in Cincinnati.

Beers and Beards Episode 127: Blue Run Reflection 1 and Side Project Yuzu24 Mar 202301:07:34

We're back this week as Gary gets back into drinking with Blue Run Reflection 1 from Castle & Key while David cracks open Yuzu Blend #1 from Side Project.

Blue Run Reflection 1 Straight Bourbon comes in at 95 proof and is aged at least 4 years. It also is on the higher end of bourbon, retailing around $100 per bottle. It was released in April 2022, and is meant to be a gentle and sipping bourbon, and Gary definitely found it to be very gentle.

Missouri recently took home the crown in the Brewery Travels Beer State Madness bracket, so David celebrated by drinking a beer he picked up on a trip to St. Louis a couple of years ago. Yuzu Blend #1 from Side Project is lighter at 5% and has a strong citrus nose and taste. There's also a tiny bit of funk that you get on the back end.

Beers and Beards Episode 126: Lagunitas Willettized17 Mar 202301:07:38

We are back this week as David dives into a bourbon-barrel aged beer in Lagunitas Willettized while Gary takes a break from drinking, but tells us about having plenty of bourbon on his trip to Nashville over the weekend.

Lagunitas Willettized is a barrel-aged imperial coffee stout that clocks in at over 13% ABV. After Willett Distillery uses their barrels for bourbon and rye, Lagunitas puts their beer in them and what comes out has strong notes of bourbon, coffee, and chocolate.

Gary discusses his weekend trip to Nashville where he got to try Weller's Craft Your Perfect Bourbon, and other debaucherous things.

In news this week, we chat about whether Anheuser Busch is losing faith in their craft beer portfolio, as well as consumers being confused about whether there is beer in their Bud Light Seltzer.

In new products, apparently Sunny D Vodka Seltzer is a thing now, while Jim Beam has released their ready-to-drink Kentucky coolers line.

Beers and Beards Episode 125: Stagg Jr. and Land-Grant We Should Start A Podcast03 Mar 202301:04:46

This week Gary drinks a bourbon from Uncle Mike's private stash, and let's just say that the 131 proof Stagg Jr. Batch 18 almost breaks him. David also drinks a higher ABV beer as he cracks open Land-Grant's We Should Start a Podcast.

Stagg Jr. might be the son of George T. Stagg bourbon, but it packs a punch. It's unfiltered and uncut, and it ages for nearly a decade. And it's not for the faint of heart. Some say that the bold character is reminiscent of Mr. Stagg himself.

Land-Grant Brewing in Columbus always puts out some unique beers, and this week David tries their We Should Start A Podcast Double IPA. It's packed with citra, strata, and Columbus hops and comes in at a heft 8%. It's dank, fruity, and smooth. The guys from Land-Grant also have their own podcast, called Beers With the Brewers.

This week we also chat about Athletic Brewing and Super Coffee teaming up for the world's first non-alcoholic pre-workout brew, breweries using ChatGPT to write beer recipes, and discuss whether the bourbon industry in Kentucky deserves a tax break.

We’re back and it’s recharge week as Gary drinks Basil Hayden Red Wine Cask Finish bourbon while David has a collaboration from Streetside and Thin Man Brewery called Na Zdravi.

Basil Hayden Red Wine Cask finish is a special release bourbon partially aged in California red wine casks. It’s light at 80 proof and has the taste of sweet ambrosia with a warm, crisp finish.

Na Zdravi is a Czech dark lager that is rich on the palate, and is full-bodied and roasty.

Episode 123: Grainworks Luke I Am Your Lager & Penelope Bourbon10 Feb 202300:50:22

This week David is back to drinking as he cracks open a schwarzbier and tries Grainworks Luke I Am Your Lager for the first time. Gary has Penelope Bourbon which is out of New Jersey

The winter is the perfect time for schwarzbiers, and the Grainworks option is black as space, but surprisingly smooth on the palate. It's clean and smooth, with a touch of chocolate.

We asked ChatGPT to provide a description of our podcast, and what it came up with was very close to reality. We will now be known as The Pour Squad.

Beers and Beards Episode 122: TX Blended Whiskey and Deschutes Black Butte Non-Alcoholic27 Jan 202301:06:08

Dry January is coming to a close, but David has one more NA beer to drink, and he goes with Deschutes Black Butte Non-Alcoholic. Gary tries something other than bourbon this week, as a listener was kind enough to provide him with some TX Blended Whiskey after he blind tasted TX Bourbon on Episode 118.

Deschutes Black Butte Non-Alcoholic is one of the highest rated NA beers on Untappd, and David said that you know it's good if Deschutes is putting the name and reputation of their highest-selling beer on the label. It's a dark pour and holds up well to the original, which David tried on the show during Flagship February last year.

TX Blended Whiskey has notes of vanilla, pear, and is slightly sweet on the nose. The palate is honey butter, banana, and caramel, and the finish is long and smooth with no burn. It won best American craft whiskey at the San Francisco World Sprits Competition in 2013.

We also chat about this being a big weekend in the NFL with both of our teams having a shot to square off in the Super Bowl. Speaking of the Super Bowl, Anheuser-Busch is switching up its advertising plan this year, with commercials coming for Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, and Busch Light. Spirits will also be featured for the first time with Crown Royal and Remy Martin cognac.

Craft breweries in Cincinnati are getting in on Ohio sports betting, as both Rhinegeist and Taft's have recently added sportsbook partners. Fireball is getting sued for selling mini bottles that don't contain whiskey.

Beers and Beards Episode 121: Cerveza Atletica & Elijah Craig Small Batch20 Jan 202301:11:42

Episode 121 is hot off the presses, and we keep things rolling on Dry January with Athletic Cerveza Atletica while Gary revisits Elijah Craig Small Batch that he originally had on Episode 10.

In legal news, a bunch of bourbon was seized from Justin's House of Bourbon in Kentucky by the ABC.

Is craft beer going through a mid-life crisis? It seems that way as major brands like New Belgium's Fat Tire, Rogue's Dead Guy, and Bell's Two Hearted all recently received updates or line extensions.

It's Super Bowl ad time, and this year Molson Coors is pitting its two biggest brands against one another as Miller Lite and Coors Light are vying for limelight in a new ad campaign.

Craft beer continues to grow in the Cincinnati region, and the newest trend is breweries opening second or even third locations. The latest to announce an additional space was Sonder Brewing, which will open the Sonder Taphaus & Kitchen in West Chester later this year. That marks at least seven area existing breweries that have plans to open new locations this year.

In the continued blurring of lines between alcoholic beverage products and established brands, Bojangles is teaming up with Appalachian Mountain Brewery to launch a hard sweet tea this year.

Beers and Beards Episode 120: Knob Creek Single Barrel & Untitled Art Non-Alcoholic Watermelon Gose15 Jan 202301:01:16

Beer prices are up and the stock market is down or whatever the song says right. This week we discuss a failed promo that copied from the great Willy Wonka (or Michael Scott depending on how old you are). David has successfully made it through half of dry January and has only drank his mouthwash twice.

A fun light non-alcoholic beer was on tap this week as David went with Untitled Art's Non-Alcoholic Watermelon Gose. It was that hit of refreshment without the alcohol that kept him on pace to finish the month strong.

A Kroger bottle pick Knob Creek Single Barrel , Small Batch was tried not once but twice (we totally redid this episode). Gary being the astute observer did fail to see that this was 120 proof and while being full of flavor was not agreeable with his sensitive tastes.

Beers and Beards Episode 119: Yellowstone and Athletic Brewing's Dave’s American Dark06 Jan 202301:06:02

Happy New Year to you and just know we appreciate all the support. David has once again committed to dry January but that doesn't mean he can't drink beer. Just beer with no alcohol, you know like going to McDonald's for a salad. This week he tries a selection from our new sponsor Athletic Brewing and the Dave’s American Dark looks like a beer and tastes like one too.

In the finale of the blind testing, Gary has some fine Yellowstone bourbon. It was a shocker how good it was.

Beers and Beards Episode 118: Esoteric - Peebles Advent and Tx Bourbon15 Dec 202201:11:59

Christmas is upon us but before we dive into the season we prepare with some new beer and bourbon. David gets a Imperial Coffee Porter with toasted coconut in Esoteric's Peeble's Advent. It was a dark beer that hit the right notes in this winter season.

Gary tries his second blind tasting provided by Mr. McKinney and doesn't hate TX Bourbon and found some good things to say about it.

This week we discuss Alex Jones releasing Conspiracy, a properly titled bourbon as well as some bourbons you can find anywhere that are worth the price.

Beers and Beards Episode 117: Northside Distilling Bust a Crust and Phoenix Brewing The Undertaker23 Nov 202201:04:21

We're back in the studio this week and Gary tries a blinded bourbon from David, which ends up being Northside Distilling Bust a Crust bourbon. David also tastes The Undertaker from The Phoenix Brewing Company.

Gary says he really likes the nose and the long Kentucky hug offered up by Northside Distilling's Single Barrel Bust a Crust special edition bourbon. David talks about his trip to Phoenix Brewing and how he enjoyed the former funeral home and mortuary and he brought back a few beers, including an imperial rye IPA called The Undertaker that he really enjoyed.

In this week's news, we talk about Rich Fiero, co-owner of Atrevida Brewing in Colorado Springs, who took down a mass shooter at a nightclub over the weekend. Rich is a true hero and we raise a glass to him.

Gamer Dr DisRespect is also releasing his own Black Steel Bourbon, and Gary explains to David exactly who that is. At the end of the show we talk about Quatar banning beer sales at the World Cup, and Budweiser came up with a creative way to unload the beer it had planned to sell during the games.

Beers and Beards Episode 116: Live at Fretboard Brewing15 Nov 202201:09:24

This week we recorded a live episode at Fretboard Brewing in Blue Ash, Ohio. If you couldn't make it out we have the replay available for you here.

David helped pick out a beer for Gary, and he ended up with a 12% bourbon-barrel aged Cool Meditation. David drinks not one, but two beers - first he has Campfire and Rain smoked amber lager and then Dunkel No. 9 dark lager.

We chat about our drinking journey over the past few years, because Fretboard just celebrated their five-year anniversary.

Beers and Beards Episode 115: Blackrocks' Mykiss IPA & Peerless Small Batch08 Nov 202201:29:56

Hey hey. A fun week as always but never a bad time when you start with laughter. It's a bourbon news heavy episode but we still sneak in that craft beer flair.

David made a beer trade to get himself some Michigan brew from the UP. This week he tries Mykiss IPA from Marquette Michigan's Blackrocks Brewery. So far it's safe to say David has not tried something in the beer category on this show that he doesn't like.

Gary tests his newly sleeved stomach with a throwback to his 40th birthday as Peerless Small Batch was the fans choice. Turns out it is still good and still a great story from one of Kentucky's oldest bourbon brands.

Forget buying friends and family Christmas gifts because Buffalo Trace just dropped their annual Antique lineup. It's gonna set you back a pretty penny but there is a return to the list that people will love.

Want to get away? Matthew McConaughey's creation with Longbranch is teaming up for a immersive retreat that may appeal to some.

NOVEMBER 14th WE ARE LIVE AT Fretboard Brewing. Get a babysitter and join us.
