Episode 43 - Is Spring Here? Accident in the Yard! Luke Goes to the Midwest Honeybee Expo!28 Feb 202601:15:58

We're enjoying a stretch of beautiful weather here in the Peoria area, and that can only mean one thing for beekeepers: false spring temptation.

This week, Steve and Luke talk through what you should (and shouldn't) be doing during these warm February days. When is it smart to crack a lid? When should you leave well enough alone? And how do you avoid setting your colonies back before maples even think about blooming?

Luke also shares a hard lesson from the yard an accident that resulted in a grass fire. What happened, what caused it, and what you can do to avoid the same mistake around your apiary.

Finally, Luke breaks down some of the standout speakers and takeaways from the Midwest Honeybee Expo in Wisconsin. From practical management tips to bigger industry conversations, there was plenty worth bringing back home to Illinois.

If you're staring at your hives in 50-degree weather wondering whether to "just take a quick peek," this episode is for you.

Episode 6 - Queen Rearing, Nectar Flow, Hive Swarming, Honey Collection, Apitourism31 May 202400:46:46

In Episode 6 of Beekeeping Buddies, hosts Steven Schmidt and Luke Harvey take listeners on a comprehensive journey through several key aspects of beekeeping. The episode kicks off with an in-depth discussion on Queen Rearing, where Steven and Luke share their expertise on raising healthy queens and the critical role these queens play in hive health and productivity.

The duo then transitions into the topic of Nectar Flow, explaining its significance and offering strategies for beekeepers to maximize honey production during this crucial period as we transition to white clover.

They also tackle Hive Swarming, providing valuable tips on managing and preventing swarms to maintain a stable and productive hive environment and what is going on in the midwest.

Listeners will also learn about best practices in Honey Collection, from the ideal timing to effective techniques for harvesting honey. A common issue, Queens Laying in Mediums, is addressed, with Steven and Luke offering practical solutions to manage and resolve this challenge.

The episode delves into Swarm Collection, where Steven and Luke share their experiences and methods for safely capturing swarms, turning potential problems into opportunities for hive expansion. They also evaluate Package Queen Quality, giving insights on how to assess and ensure the quality of queens received in bee packages.

For those interested in advanced beekeeping techniques, the hosts introduce Queen Grafting, providing a beginner-friendly overview of this method for raising new queens.

Finally, the episode wraps up with a fun segment on Apitourism, highlighting a local destination covered in the farm bureu magazine and how that might tie into your local small business.

Join Steven and Luke in Episode 6 for an hour of engaging and informative beekeeping conversation, perfect for both novice and experienced beekeepers.

Episode 40 - We talk to Dr. Jeff Pettis about the Tropilaelaps mite and what to know about this threat26 Nov 202500:49:38

I know, two episodes in two weeks? Well, episode 40 is here, and this one is big.

We sat down with Dr. Jeff Pettis, former President of Apimondia and one of the world's leading honey bee researchers, for an in-depth conversation about the Tropilaelaps mite—the parasitic threat looming over global beekeeping.

In this episode:

• What Tropilaelaps mites are and how they differ from Varroa
• Why they spread so rapidly and how countries currently battling them (like South Korea) are coping
• What would happen if Tropilaelaps arrived in the United States—the realistic short- and long-term impacts
• Early detection, containment strategies, and the U.S. preparedness gap
• What beekeepers can do right now to stay informed and ready

This is one of our most important interviews to date, offering clear-eyed insight from a scientist who has studied global bee health for decades.

Tune in, learn what's coming, and help shape the conversation about protecting honey bees in North America.
