Connecting Through Vulnerability13 Dec 202200:29:57

Send us a text

Intimacy is to "be fully known and fully accepted." God wants us to be intimate with Him, and He gives us the recipe on how to do it.

The same way we connect with God we can connect with our spouse. And when we do, we'll experience a deep level of intimacy.

But to be fully known you have to be willing to be vulnerable.  To open yourself up so your spouse can "see it all."

However, vulnerability must be met with safety in order for a spirit of full disclosure to take place.

That's what we talk about in this episode. We share three keys for creating a "safe space" for vulnerability that will help you strengthen your intimacy in marriage and deepen your connection.

Enjoy!

Healthy Life Healthy Marriage09 Nov 202200:34:01

Send us a text

Before oneness in marriage, there's "two-ness." You have to be individually healthy before you can be relationally healthy. The second greatest commandment echoes this when we're told to love others (our spouse) "as we love ourselves."

A healthy life is the foundation for a healthy marriage.

In today's episode, we brought in an expert to show us how  we can be the best version of ourselves by thriving in our body, mind, and spirit.

A former middle school teammate with Jason, Dr. John Skelton has worked more than 20 years as an Emergency Room doctor. After seeing thousands of patients struggling with perpetual problems, he started his own Lifestyle Medical practice that focuses on holistic health - mind, body, spirit.

Tune in and find out what causes anxiety and what you can do about it, how to reverse diabetes, how hormonal levels play a role in everything, and a surprising three-step plan to deal with the stress in your life.

God wants you to be the healthiest version of yourself. Every part of you is linked - if one part is sick then it affects every other part, including your closest relationships. Listen to Dr. John as he dives deep to help you get healthy.

Using Humor to Manage Conflict26 Oct 202200:36:51

Send us a text

There are two types of marital conflict - the kind that can be resolved and the kind you have to live with.

Solvable conflict relates to a specific situation or behavior. Unsolvable conflict is more about personality differences and underlying issues.

Most conflict falls into the unsolvable category. But you don’t have to resolve these marital conflicts in order to thrive.

Dr. John Gottman, a world-famous psychotherapist, said that after 40 years of research he found that using humor to be one of the best ways for couples to calm themselves in the midst of a fight.

Humor isn't just good for your marriage, it's proven to be beneficial to your physical body as well.

In this episode, we'll dive into the power of laughter in your relationship and how we discovered it in the midst of a fight outside our County Fair!

Enjoy.

Dealing With Buried Emotions05 Oct 202200:32:16

Send us a text

Did you know that buried emotions never die? They show up in the strangest places and at the most random times often wreaking havoc on our closest relationships. Insecurities from the past, doubts about the future, fear of failure, overwhelming self-consciousness - all of these and more can creep their way into your marriage and hold you back from becoming the vibrant couple God made you to be.

In today's episode, we'll dive into the two keys to properly dealing with emotions from the past so they won't hold you back in your present and how they can actually become springboards for your future. We'll look at a prophet in the Old Testament, how he helped one of his buddies get to the source of his problem and how he aligned himself with the supernatural.

Our culture rewards people for "holding things together" when they go through tough situations. But doing so can damage you emotionally if you don't properly deal with the stuff you felt while you went through it. Even worse, if you hold onto it for too long, the weight will be too much to bear.

But it doesn't have to be this way. You can thrive emotionally and flourish relationally if you know how to get to the root. Dive in and let's do this together!

Oh, and Tori is finally going to share her world-famous "ranger cookie" recipe. You won't want to miss that.

p.s. We think you'll like our song choice for this week. Epic love song!

Every human being was created to connect with others. This is even more so the case in marriage. But disconnection is the natural tendency in our sin-fallen world.

However, there is a way to connect on a deeper level with your spouse - and it starts with being emotionally intelligent about where to look.

In this episode, Tori will share three core "stances" we take to meet our needs and how understanding the one we predominately rely on is the key to connecting deeper with our spouse.

Embracing Your Role in Marriage21 Sep 202200:32:24

Send us a text

God created you and your spouse to operate in very specific roles within your relationship. So long as you stay in your proper lane, all is well. But the minute one or both of you move outside your role, or even worse - you switch roles - it could be devastating to your marriage.

Listen in as our familiar guests Eric and Rachel Beck talk about the roles we were designed to play, how we can function within those roles, and how to encourage your spouse when he/she is not operating within the role for which they were designed.

Speaking of rolls, Tori knows how to make some serious sourdough bread. Oh wait, that's the wrong kind of role!

The Power of a Praying Couple14 Sep 202200:30:38

Send us a text

Did you know that married couples who pray together are 90% more likely to report higher satisfaction in their sex life than couples who don't pray together?

Call us crazy, but we've discovered that incorporating prayer in our marriage does way more than simply increase physical satisfaction - it draws us together unlike anything else can.

Why? Because all truly healthy marriages involve three people - husband, wife, and God. When you bring God into your relationship great things happen.

God is your Father, so He knows what you need more than you do. But He's also your Father-in-Law - He knows what your spouse needs. Better yet, He will give you the keys to their heart if you'll simply take time to listen to Him.

That's what this episode is all about - how to incorporate prayer into our marriage and how to leverage it's power in our relationship.

We'll wrap up with three aspects of prayer that all couples need to do every single day.

Enjoy. This one is a fun one.

How to be WILDLY Attracted to Your Spouse24 Aug 202200:28:07

Send us a text

When you and your spouse first met, FEELING came before EXPRESSION. You “felt” something before you expressed how you felt.

But then we get married and the chaos of life hits, and  that "lovin feelin" seems to be the last thing on our minds. It's at these moments that we learn a valuable truth - while feeling came before expression before marriage, after marriage expression comes before feeling!

Actions come first!!!

Think about this - you don’t feel healthy and then run three miles do you?  You don't feel healthy and then skip dessert do you?

No! You run three miles and skip dessert, THEN you feel healthy. Actions first.

In today's episode we're going to look at a small book in the Bible named after a man who drew a tough assignment from God. His name was Hosea, and if there ever was a man who had to learn this lesson it was him. But the miracle of the story is just as true for you and your spouse as it was for him!

Tune in and see what God did through him to show us how we can be wildly attracted to our spouse.

Connection Through Communication17 Aug 202200:41:24

Send us a text

The most important thing you can do in your marriage is learn how to communicate properly to your spouse. Why? Because communication is all about CONNECTION!

When you dated your spouse you had no problem communicating. But then you got married and all of a sudden communicating became hard.

But it doesn't have to stay that way!  In this episode we'll dive into two familiar stories in the Bible that shows the power of communication, and draw out three key elements that are important for us to understand if we're going to connect with our spouse.

Good communication starts with a clear understanding of three things:

1) You need to understand that God brought you together.
2) You need to understand you and your spouse are wired differently.
3) You need to understand that communication is often difficult.

Need help with your communication? Then join one of our coaching programs. You can learn more HERE

Oh, and one more thing - if you listen all the way to the end Tori will let you in on a little food recipe she discovered was a gamechanger for our family! Just for fun!

Believing In Your Spouse27 Jul 202200:51:16

Send us a text

A few weeks ago we had lunch with one of our pastors from church and his wife. The way they interacted with each other was one of the most refreshing and enlightening experiences we've had with a couple. After 22 years of marriage, they are still "madly" in love with each other, love being around one another, all while being in full-throttle parent mode.

We sat in our car afterward and both agreed - "we're gonna get these two on our podcast, period!" Fortunately, we didn't have to threaten them or anything like that! Ha Ha.

We finally got them in the studio and had a powerful conversation. All we can say is that you're going to love these two.

In this episode, Nathan and Tamsey Smith share their story and some very practical marriage advice.  They give several things they do to keep their marriage vibrant.  The first tip they share is something we're going to incorporate in our own marriage immediately!

Enjoy!

Stress & Marriage06 Jul 202200:45:30

Send us a text

Never before have we lived busier lives and needed to put safeguards in place to protect ourselves from the stressors that crush our bodies and ruin our relationships.

In this episode, we're going to talk about the dangers of "busyness" and distraction on our bodies and our marriages. We've learned that the real issue isn’t the increased stress, it's the prolonged release of adrenaline that seeks to alleviate that stress.

We're going to dive into how our body functions to alleviate stress, and how that very function is the thing that can hurt us if we aren't careful to regulate it.

Stress is normal and good, but it’s supposed to be TEMPORARY! Elevated stress is like pressing the gas and never letting up! But it doesn't have to be that way.

We're going to share with you three simple keys that will help you alleviate stress in your own life, help your spouse deal with stress in their life, and how to thrive in your marriage in the midst of a crazy busy world.

Dealing With Emotions in Marriage (part 2) 15 Jun 202200:31:46

Send us a text

Last week we looked at the power of emotions and how trapped emotions wreak havoc on our bodies, our souls, and our relationships. This week we'll look into some practical steps we can take to process those emotions.

An emotion is tied to what happened to us. A feeling is tied to how we process that emotion. If we don't process our emotions properly, we'll end up with feelings we never should have had.

In this episode we'll discuss three simple steps to process emotions:

* Let it Out
* Let it Go
* Let it Happen

Within each, we'll share some practical steps on how we can do each of these and live in peace and freedom in our own personal lives as well as our marriage.

Dealing With Emotions in Marriage (part 1)08 Jun 202200:28:00

Send us a text

Trapped emotions rob us of joy and destroy our relationships, leaving us a shell of the marriage God intended for us. Not only that, they destroy our physical bodies.

In this episode, we'll take a look at a powerful verse that shows us the importance of exposing hidden emotions and how God can help us get to the bottom of them.

Psalms 139:23-24 states, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.”

David essentially asks God, “Put me in a struggle so I can see what’s going on inside me!”

God knows what emotions we are feeling, even when we aren't sure ourselves. And He knows the emotions that draw us close and those which pull us away from each other. He wants to help us access the power of emotions and expose them for what they are.

We'll also discuss the three sources of emotion - inherited, experienced, and projected.

You will enjoy this episode and the one that follows.

Many of you know that Tori is a certified coach for the Enneagram and Emotional Intelligence, but for those who don’t, well, she is! And in this episode she’s going to dive deep into the three “instinctual subtypes” of the Enneagram.

Knowing how you behave “instinctively” will help you not only understand yourself but relate to your spouse on a deeper level.

In short, there are three sub-types (or “instincts”) we all have. They are:

  • Self Preservation - my instinct is mostly about “ME.”
  • Social - my instinct is mostly about “US.”
  • One-to-One - my instinct is mostly about “YOU.”

Tori will explain each of these more in depth as she dissects me (lucky guy!) on air. Hope you enjoy learning this as much as we did sharing it!

Staying in Love While Parenting Kids27 Apr 202200:23:58

Send us a text

Today we're going to dive into the four stages of parenting and a very simple, practical way we can stay in love while parenting our kids. As any married couple with kids will tell you, it can be a real challenge!

Our foundation is in Exodus 33 where we see how God parented the Israelites and stayed connected with them at the same time.

Throughout the book we see the Four stages of parenting:

    •    1) Babysitter - A babysitter says, “I’ve GOT you!”

    •    2) Referee - A ref says, “I’ll PUNISH you.”

    •    3) Coach - A coach says, “I’m FOR you.”

    •    4) Teammate - A teammate says, “I’m WITH you.”

KEY: A spirit of HONOR moves our kids through the first three stages to become a teammate.

The teammate phase is where we truly get to KNOW the person.

PROBLEM - our kids often move backward through the stages when by their behavior.  And that can threaten our marital bond if we're not careful. Therefore, the key to staying in love while parenting kids is to be on the same page in the same stage with our spouse.

This episode is all about dating in your marriage. Often times when we get married that's the thing that gets pushed aside because of our busy lives. But it's vitally important if we want to keep our relationship strong and growing.

We'll discuss three key aspects about dating:

  • DATING IS ABOUT DISCOVERY
  • DATING IS ABOUT CONNECTION
  • DATING IS ABOUT DREAMING

We'll also talk about the value of play and the five things it gives you as a couple:

  • Deeper connection
  • Positive emotions (cancer breeds on negative emotion)
  • Relational satisfaction
  • Better communication
  • Better problem-solving

If you want to incorporate dating into your marriage, follow these three steps:

  • 1) Create a dating system
  • 2) Set goals (big and small)
  • 3) Talk about things that matter

Overcoming Fear in Marriage13 Apr 202200:22:50

Send us a text

Before two can become one, one needs to be one (a whole person).

Relational health is born out of individual health.

Often times in marriage the problem isn’t US - it’s ME.

The problem we’ll talk about today is FEAR. We're going to show how fear is literally debilitating to your relationship.

Fear draws us away from those we love.

Faith draws us toward those we love.

KEY - God often orchestrates scary situations to prove His power.

How do we overcome fear?  The same way the angels did in Revelation 12:11:

  • The blood of the Lamb - salvation
  • The power of their testimony - salvation lived out
  • Not loving their lives so much as to shrink from death - whatever the cost attitude.

In marriage, if we can overcome our fear it will unite us to our spouse in a powerful way. But you have to first let your spouse in on your fear. And if they are the ones going through a trial, jump into the struggle with them.

Your greatest blessings are only found on the other side of your greatest fears! And when you walk through them together, your relationship will grow stronger as a result.

Closing the Love Loop06 Apr 202200:27:32

Today we're talking about THE LOVE LOOP. This is just a fancy term for when spouses are connected and nothing is hindering their relationship. Like your wedding ring - it's fully connected in a perfectly formed loop around your finger.

Marriage is the same way. And in order to keep that loop secure, we have to excel in the power of GRATITUDE!

When your spouse does something for you it opens up a half loop.
Expressing gratitude closes the Love Loop and results in connection.
Unexpressed gratitude leaves the loop open and results in disconnection.

The primary factor in emotional and relational health is GRATITUDE.  Why? Because gratitude challenges negative thought patterns.  Negative thinking destroys your brain and your bond to your spouse.

Gratitude is the social emotion of the brain - it makes you feel attached to the person you’re thankful for.

Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received.
Thankfulness is the desire to express that feeling.
Thanksgiving is following through on that desire.

How to increase gratitude in your relationship:

  1. Pay attention to the little things that you typically take for granted.
  2. Focus on the good that you can be thankful for.
  3. Experience the emotion of gratitude by putting yourself in different shoes.  (If I didn’t have her…what would my life be like if…)
  4. Have a habit of thanking God for your spouse.  (He’s your Father-In-Law)
  5. Express, Express, Express your gratitude.  (the more you express the more you’ll want to express)

The reward for gratitude is presence (Psalms 100:4)  with God & your spouse.

When we first got married we quickly discovered one of the most difficult things to do was to accept each other for who we really are.  Not because we didn't love each other, oh no! But because we discovered certain things we didn't like about each other.

Fortunately, we made it through those early years and learned some powerful keys that helped us along the way.

Here's what we discuss in this episode:

* How to be accepting of your spouse
* How to be acceptable to your spouse
* The foundation for acceptance - loving yourself
* Three things God wants you to know about how He feels about you
* How you can show God's love to your spouse
* How to grow in intimacy

Communication in Marriage23 Mar 202200:20:15

George Bernard Shaw once said, “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”

To strengthen your marriage you have to learn to communicate well. We know it goes without saying, but all-too-often we think we're saying one thing but our spouse hears something completely different.

What do we do in those situations?   How can we learn to communicate in a way where we stay on the same page?

That's what we'll tackle in this episode. We'll talk about how good communication is about giving AND receiving.  And when you learn to do both of those well, you'll be well on your way to a strong relationship.

We'll also share a five-step method we discovered to keep us out of the "misunderstood" zone. We call it our LEARN method, and it will help you strengthen your ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

Our good friend, Jon Gordon, says, "In the absence of communication negativity fills the void." That's more true in marriage than in any other relationship. But it doesn't have to be that way. So dive in and let's make sure that never happens to any of us!

Enjoy!

Forgiveness Redefined16 Mar 202200:35:44

What married couple doesn't have to deal with forgiveness? It's something Tori has to deal with on a regular occasion. HA HA!

In this episode, we're going to tackle the issue of forgiveness and the danger of unforgiveness, and how unforgiveness in the heart gives someone control over your life.

We've heard it said, "Refusing to forgive is like drinking poison and expecting someone else to die."

To help us wade through the murky waters of forgiveness, we've broken this episode down into two categories:

* When you've wronged someone, how do you seek forgiveness?
* When someone has wronged you, how do you grant forgiveness?

When it comes to seeking forgiveness, the Bible gives us a powerful three-step plan for confession and the one thing we have to do if we're going to experience healing in our relationship. It comes from Psalms 51 when King David sinned with Bathsheba.

When it comes to granting forgiveness, we don't believe you can forgive and forget and just move on. We believe that forgiving "as God forgives" looks quite a bit different than what you've probably been taught before.

We'll dissect two specific occasions where Jesus shows us how to deal with a person who's repented and someone who hasn't. You won't want to miss this episode!

So let's dive in!

Send us a text

When you got married you became ONE with your spouse. This gave you the 10x factor!

But Satan wants you divided because he knows he can't win if the two of you are operating on the same page.

One of the ways to combat this is by proactively creating healthy habits in your relationship.

A healthy habit is anything that draws you together with your spouse.  It's finding something you can do together and making a consistent habit in your relationship.

In this episode, we'll discuss a few very practical habits we've built into our marriage that have proven to be fun and energizing ways to bring life to our relationship. And we'll challenge you to find ways to do the same with your spouse.
