Are you beating yourself up?

I had the realization this week that since I haven't had anyone beating me up on the mat for two months, I've started beating myself up.

A very minor bump in the road with a client turned into a major crisis in confidence for me. I fell into the dreaded downward spiral. If you haven't heard episode 7 on the downward spiral, listen to it next.

Until this week, I was unaware how much better I had become at setting boundaries and clear expectations, and going after what I wanted off the mat because I was physically doing it on the mat, or at least trying, a few times a week. It was becoming ingrained in me. I carried that behavior and confidence off the mat with me.

I didn't even know that I was beating myself up until a friend brought it to my attention. It hadn’t occurred to me that the impact of not training would be mental as much as physical. I knew my Gi was getting a little tighter, but I didn't think I was mentally losing my edge.

Be mindful of the chatter in your head.

77: Writing Morning Pages for High Performance15 Mar 202000:04:16

How are you? That feels like a loaded question this week, in a time of social distancing, uncertainty, and fear about what happens next.

Earlier in the week, I pulled out my journal to write my daily affirmations. We just talked about writing affirmations in Ep 73 of the podcast. It’s part of my daily morning routine. But on Tuesday, the more I wrote, the worse I felt because none of them were ringing true for me.

I got so frustrated that I finally stopped and scribbled, “This is all BS.” Then I just started writing everything that I was feeling inside. It felt so good to have an emotional purge and get it all out in a few pages. It was like a little visit back to my practice of writing morning pages.

Later in the week, I was working on a podcast for a client and they mentioned Morning Pages and Julia Cameron. Julia Cameron is the author of a book called The Artists Way - A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity

In this book, she walks us through the daily practice of writing morning pages. It’s a simple exercise of just opening up your journal and writing out in longhand, 3 pages of whatever is on your mind. The beauty of this exercise is that there is no wrong way to do it. You just have to do it. You open up your journal and if you feel it, if you think about it, you write it down.

The purpose is that getting these thoughts out of your head on onto the paper opens up space for creativity. Right now, this feels like the morning practice I need to create the focus and clarity I need to perform at a higher level on and off the mat.

What would happen if you walked into your next jiu-jitsu class and your mind was a blank slate? What if you weren’t thinking about what you needed to pick up from the store on the way home, or replaying a frustrating conversation with a co-worker? Would you have more capacity to retain what you were learning? Would you take better notes? Would you recognize the opportunity to actually put into practice what you learned in your next roll? My fellow white belts, would it all finally start to click?

I am committed to a daily practice of writing my morning pages. I’m also going back and re-reading The Artist’s Way by Julie Cameron.

Creating Your BJJ Game Plan

AJ walks us through structuring a jiu-jitsu game plan. She starts with the easiest way for white belts to start working on their game plans and then explains how her game planning has changed as she has progressed.

Start by writing down what you know. Structure it for 3 top positions and 3 bottom positions. Write down 2-4 moves that you know from each position. Don’t worry if you don’t know that many moves yet. Write them down as you learn and drill them.

In addition to helping you prepare for competition, following a written game plan will also help your coach troubleshoot areas where you are struggling.

As you advance, your game plan will become more of a system.

I’m competing next weekend. As I was journaling yesterday morning, I came up with my mantra for the week.

I AM CONFIDENT IN MY GAME PLAN AND MY ABILITY TO ADAPT.

My goal this week is to run my game plan at every opportunity. It will also be on repeat in my head as I drift off to sleep every night.

In addition to competing, I also have a lot happening in life off the mat. There are meetings, conversations, client work to be done, and another podcasting workshop to set up.

"I am confident in my game plan and my ability to adapt." will also be my mantra for those activities off the mat. This will help keep me focused and intentional about the outcomes I want to create and the actions needed to make it all happen.

Gillian Davis is a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a mom, has a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, and runs Brazen Martial Arts with her husband Garry.

She is also one of the moderators of the Women’s Grappling Network, a Facebook group started by Jessie Brown, that currently has over 8800 members.

Do you feel pressure to bring “value” when rolling with a higher rank?

From brand-new white belts to experienced black belts, we all bring unique value to the mat. Seeing the value we bring can be especially tricky when you’re new to grappling.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you’re learning a move for the first time, then you go to drill it, and your mind goes blank. We’ve been there and lived to podcast about it.

For upper belts, rolling with a less experienced partner is a chance to refine their game. Meanwhile, lower belts have the opportunity to receive guidance and learn from the higher ranks.

Every roll or drill has value when you approach it with intention. It’s your responsibility, no matter the color of your belt, to find or create value for yourself. This is your journey.
