Recently an article went viral about a Gen Z'er not enjoying her time in Florence, and it got Kate thinking about her time trying to cosplay a more sophisticated, European version of herself that genuinely thought she came back a changed woman due to her collection of street pashmina and her ability to navigate the Eurrail train system. This week, Kate goes back to the beginning. This week, Kate has on a special guest that you may have known from the world of bridal design, but given an ongoing legal battle with her former employer, she can no longer publicly identify with her given name and was reintroduced to the world as Cheval in August 2022 (and her namesake line of glam footwear @sheischeval was introduced in October 2022).

 As the friendly designer and "America's bridesmaid" on TLC's, "Say Yes to the Dress," she brought over 10 bridal product lines to market, dressed noteworthy female icons like Dove Cameron, Chrissy Teigen, and Carrie Underwood, and became one of the most sought-after luxury bridal designers in the world (VOGUE'S TOP TEN). After 9 years of working under a very one-sided employment contract, her former employer sued her in federal court and gained control of what she believed were her personal social media accounts. She resigned in December 2020 and under the current preliminary injunction, she is prevented from using her own birth name in any business or commerce or even to publicly identify herself. She is also not receiving commission for her designs that are still being sold, and she is restricted from identifying herself as a designer to the trade in which her former employer competes until August of 2027.

The public support has inspired her next mission in launching a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit foundation that provides resources to better protect the interests of young women and creatives during the formative years of their career. She is currently writing a memoir and rebranding under SHE IS CHEVAL.

This week, Kate follows up on some of the themes from last week about the lore and cultural significance of pageantry by bringing on a former pageant contestant & PR insider (and Beth!) named Cori Wallace, who chats with her about a variety of topics that extend beyond the scope of last week's drama to meander through pageants being both a reflection (and regression) of elements of modern womanhood. A deep dive Kate put together last minute about the controversy surrounding the Miss USA pageant late last week when contestants claimed the pageant was "rigged" and/or a product of overt favoritism toward Miss Texas. Insisting she was mostly disinterested, Kate dipped her toe in, then managed to spend the whole weekend researching history, and lore, thinking about her own memories watching, all while developing an incredibly lukewarm take on a topic she knows very little about and isn't totally sure if she should support.

This week, Kate starts by sharing her thoughts on how being fashionable in the early aughts meant to try the absolute HARDEST, a revelation that feels as glaring as her patent leather pumps after witnessing the shift in collegiate fashion upon spending "welcome weekend" in a college town. This week, Kate discusses Bama RushTok from a slightly different angle, exploring the elaborate gender performance and implicit artifice of sorority recruitment in the context of being interpreted as [postmodern] 'camp' and a form of high art to consume, per the insight of Tiktok users @shorthouseplant and @themostes. The meaning of camp made the internet collectively melt down in 2019 following the Met Gala (given its defining characteristic being an inability to be concretely defined), but Kate attempts to explore how as a society we've embraced this incredibly unserious process with a serious level of investment perhaps due to the naïveté of those earnestly performing within these exaggerated circumstances. She also deep dove breakout star Kylan and just needed someone to talk to about the high/low of her dorm room, her pageant trajectory and [alleged] last minute switch to Bama, and her hypothesis about what's going on behind the scenes when you show up to Bama rush with a catch phrase and complete ~11 brand deals in 14 days of high exposure. Kate also spends a solid amount of time thinking of the bumping process as a sort of performance art, and talks about the increased showcasing of dancing/cheerleading talent in Tiktok videos, where the performance of sorority values in the form of costumes and choreography is not only performed for positioning among PNMs, but now to the world, and Kate's worried about the HS cheer gals being pulled out of retirement to do roundoff back handsprings in spirit skirts on concrete in the name of sisterhood seduction. This week, Kate discusses Evangelical influencers, from more extreme transitions, e.g. a fashion influencer who now offers deliverance from abortion demons (?), to the reality-star-to-preacher-pipeline of young women of faith that are talented public speakers like Duck Dynasty's Sadie Robertson and The Bachelor's Madi Prewett that now use their platforms as ministries. This week, Kate discusses our obsession with scams and scam documentaries, and does a spin-off of the popular Tiktok prompt of "what's something that is a scam but we've normalized it so much we no longer realize it's a scam?" from her personal list of grievances, e.g. The American Dream, bridesmaid dresses, student loans, only married couples receiving benefits, among other things, and also goes through crowd-sourced submissions of things people think have big scam energy. She also details her disdain for True Crime as entertainment and explores why she prefers this category. However, she begins by discussing the Supreme Court overturning the landmark case of Roe v. Wade announced Friday, while she was away from equipment and had already recorded this week's episode (so forgive her, this section was done very last minute), but she uses the first half-hour to address perhaps the biggest scam of all: that people believe restricting access to abortion care is pro-life when it is unequivocally anti-women and stands to put countless lives at risk by forgoing human rights and medical best practice in favor the intervention of dangerous political and religious ideologies.
