| Executive Functioning Series - How to Help Your Child to Study | Ep #9 | 16 Jul 2021 | 00:11:28 | |
The word “study” is a very broad and vague word that means many different things. It can mean learning or understanding something, mastering something, contextualizing, etc. When we ask our kids to study, they need to know what we want them to be doing. Mary talks about how students can create their roadmap for studying, asking themselves questions like “How does my brain learn best?” and “What is my learning ability like?” We want to enjoy the process of studying and not create an experience around it that is one of frustration. | Interview with Tatum DeMann | Ep #8 | 02 Jul 2021 | 00:20:36
Mary and Tatum started working together when Tatum was in 2nd grade. Tatum was a driven learner and put a lot of pressure on herself. She was a perfectionist when it came to her education, and she set herself to such a high standard it was debilitating. Mary talks about how you can master things without getting frustrated. She reflects that on working with Tatum she saw that when Tatum moved from one problem she knew to one she didn’t know, Tatum would have a meltdown. Mary thought “great you care so much about this work.” Her response was let’s just take a deep breath and dig into the difficult. Everyone has some area of challenge, let’s get it to work for you. Tatum realizes how much she continues to use the techniques Mary taught her. She didn’t get any math questions wrong on the SAT because she refused to not understand every question on the PSAT. If Tatum could go back and talk to that young girl that Mary worked with she’d say: the challenges that seem so overwhelming right now - that’s what’s going to drive you to be the most successful version of yourself. The people around you are there to help you grow and learn. And if you’re nervous, take that as a positive that you care. | Talking with Spencer Moravek About Student Anxiety and Stress (and Boredom) | Ep #7 | 25 Jun 2021 | 00:23:26
Spencer Moravek, an Evolved Education tutor, talks about student anxiety. He defines anxiety as an energy source. Anxiety burns “hot.” He is curious about the types of energy that students use. Boredom is another energy that students use. He asks, “why is it that it is often overlooked- unlike the energy of anxiety, which is often used and feared.” When students display boredom, we can keep going until we find what is exciting and interesting. PLEASE NOTE: Dorthea Fox is actually Nancy Hart. By using boredom to investigate interest, our classes and learning can become enriched and much more valuable. Spencer has helped many students to use anxiety to become a better student and learner. He talks about how to use that energy to support students. In one instance, he partners with teachers to change up an assignment in order to meet the interests of the student. In another, he builds in a reward system to get through the work he does not wish to do. Spencer also speaks about a study he was involved in while at the Brain and Language Lab at DePaul University.
