Using Trivia to Inspire Writers: Lessons from Brian "Uncle John" Boone05 Dec 202500:20:55

In this warm and curiosity-packed conversation, Tricia Friedman sits down with Brian "Uncle John" Boone, longtime contributor to the iconic Uncle John's Know It All Bathroom Reader series—now celebrating its 38th edition. Brian shares why trivia continues to captivate millions, how collaborative writing fuels the series' longevity, and why tiny bits of knowledge can strengthen community, curiosity, and even kindness.

Together, Tricia and Brian explore:

  • Why trivia matters in a world overloaded with information

  • How curiosity helps us build human connection

  • The behind-the-scenes pitching and research process at the Bathroom Readers' Institute

  • The multigenerational fandom behind the beloved series

  • How educators, parents, and young writers can use trivia to inspire creativity and local storytelling

  • Practical tips for idea-keeping, pitching, and overcoming rejection as a writer

This episode is perfect for educators, writers, trivia lovers, librarians, caretakers, and anyone needing a little delight at this busy time of year.

Brian Boone has spent more than two decades helping shape one of the world's most beloved trivia traditions: Uncle John's Bathroom Reader. With millions of copies sold and a fiercely loyal, multigenerational fandom, the "Know It All" series continues to turn everyday moments into delightful discoveries.

In this episode, Brian shares what keeps the series thriving after 38 editions:

  • Humans are wired for curiosity. Trivia satisfies our desire to understand the world in quick, accessible ways.

  • Trivia builds connection. Readers often share facts with friends, family, and even strangers—strengthening social bonds.

  • Collaboration fuels creativity. The series is built by writers of different ages and backgrounds, each bringing unique lenses to history, science, pop culture, and everyday oddities.

  • Research is an adventure. From public libraries to vintage magazines to listener letters, the team follows surprising threads that lead to new stories.

  • Writing thrives on feedback. Brian offers honest, encouraging insight into pitching, rejection, and finding the right home for your ideas.

Tricia and Brian also discuss how educators can adapt this model for micro-projects in classrooms: school-based trivia books, local history prompts, research sprints, and collaborative student authorship.

If you're looking for a light, meaningful episode at the end of a hectic year, this conversation is a reminder that joyful learning still matters.

154: Why school leaders passionate about inclusion need to learn more about esports19 Oct 202300:34:18
In this episode Dr. Kraft shatters misconceptions and reveals the power of gaming for building social-emotional skills. How can educators effectively integrate gaming into their SEL programs? Are You Ready To Unlock the Power of Gaming? The power of gaming can be harnessed to forge strong peer connections among students. By instilling the elements of gaming in social-emotional learning, students can be encouraged to reflect on their emotions and reactions in gaming scenarios, apply insights to real-life contexts, and foster belonging within their peer groups. Thus, far from being a mere recreational activity, gaming can be a potent tool for facilitating improved student well-being and social-emotional growth. Learn more about our amazing guest: Dr. Kristen Craft has served as a teacher, principal, and district administrator in public education for the past 27 years. A champion of students, Dr. Craft is currently the Scholastic Esports Specialist for Generation Esports. How is Minecraft a powerful tool for building community, fostering inclusion, and engaging learners? This week we share an episode of the Shifting Schools podcast featuring the amazing guest Mashfiq Ahmed who has an answer for that question and tons of wisdom to share. ➡️ Mashfiq Ahmed (he/him) is a high school chemistry teacher at John Dewey High School in Brooklyn, New York. He has been playing video games ever since he was 4-years-old and they have positively shaped him into the person that he is today. As a teacher, Mashfiq utilizes classroom gamification tools in order to support all of his students and make science more engaging. When the 2020-2021 virtual school year started, Mashfiq created an after school Minecraft Club in order for students to have a place to relax and de-stress through gaming during the pandemic. Since then, the club has grown to become something so much bigger than he could have possibly imagined. For example, Mashfiq's Minecraft Club participates in esports building competitions with designs that promote equity, accessibility, and sustainability in New York City. Mashfiq strives to create a safe space for all, especially neurodivergent, people of color, and LGBTQ+ students, to express themselves through Minecraft and gaming. His Minecraft Club members are also Minecraft Student Ambassadors who have provided Minecraft training for other teachers and have showcased their work globally, such as at the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference. Mashfiq hopes that the future of gaming continues to be more inclusive and accessible for everyone. Additionally, he is also a certified Minecraft educator and a global Minecraft mentor. Step up for Second Chance this September12 Sep 202500:41:44

Second Chance was conceived in 2018 when 60 of the world's best students had their full scholarships revoked by a university at the last moment.

Every year, high-achieving, high-need students around the world miss out on university for reasons outside of their control. These students have applied to university, but are not able to access the financial aid they had hoped for.

This is where Second Chance comes in. Each year, they identify a cohort of the world's most brilliant students who face financial and other barriers to higher education, who have not gained access to university in the usual application cycle. These students come from the most difficult circumstances worldwide.

After April 1, when universities have usually finalized their funding, their team of highly committed, experienced college counselors rapidly place these students at excellent universities around the world, with full scholarships.

Episode 126: Emotional Labor with Rose Hackman13 Apr 202300:27:20
On this episode, we host author and journalist Rose Hackman who shares more about her new book 'Emotional Labor.' Learn more about Rose Hackman: Rose Hackman is a British journalist based in Detroit. For the last decade, her work on gender, race, labor, policing, housing and the environment — published in The Guardian — has brought international attention to overlooked American policy issues, historically entrenched injustices, and complicated social mores. In 2015, while working as a features writer for The Guardian in New York City, Rose wrote a widely-circulated article on emotional labor, which radically changed her way of understanding how power, gender and race affect the most intimate ways in which people relate to one another. Her research on emotional labor in the eight years since — as an invisible, devalued, feminized and yet essential form of work — has sought to drastically reframe our view of women, work and the nature of persistent inequality. Rose grew up in post-industrial, francophone Belgium. She received her undergraduate degree in 2008 from University College London (UCL) and trained as a reporter in the Associated Press print and television newsrooms in Rome, Italy. In 2013, she graduated with a master's degree in Human Rights from Columbia University, where she focused on social and economic rights violations in the United States. I cannot talk about AJ Irving's soon-to-be-released (May, 2023) book 'The Wishing Flower' without getting emotional. It is groundbreaking, beautiful, and a must-buy for school libraries. We talk about the power of books, the power of groups ensuring the truth always has a home in classrooms, and what we can do to collaboratively ask for more books like this one. Episode 123: Behind the Scenes with BIPOC Credits23 Mar 202300:28:50
On this episode, we sit down with the folks behind the podcast "BIPOC Credits." If you teach film or you have students interested in learning more about the film industry, this is a great show to follow. BIPOC Credits aims to educate new and hopeful BIPOC filmmakers and crew members on the various roles involved on a professional film set. Helmed by BC native Andy Wong, who himself is a working Assistant Director in the Director's Guild of Canada (DGC). Each episode consists of conversations about what new crew members can expect on the job, challenges they may face, and the changing landscape of diversity that has influenced their journey. Follow the show online: https://shows.acast.com/bipoc-credits Learn more about today's guests: Andy started in the film industry 10 years ago aspiring to be the next John Cho. However, due to the lack of opportunities for Asian actors back then, he decided to create opportunities for himself by going to film school where he learned the various positions on a film set. He soon found himself working behind the scenes and accelerated from a production assistant into an assistant director in a span of two years. He now hopes to educate and (maybe) inspire the members of the BIPOC community considering work in the booming BC film industry. Nightingale co-founded non-profit organization Bridging the Gap in Motion in 2018. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Nightingale created Quarantine Qapsule (QQ) to archive counter narratives of the Asian Canadian experience during this time via artistic expression. In 2021, Nightingale directed, produced and wrote VICE Asian Canadian Mental Health docuseries Breaking Ground. She is also Andy's self-proclaimed "second brain" as an FYI.
