Hey there Bookshelvers!
A midweek podcast extra!? What’s going on? Well…we’re going off piste a little today but with good reason.
Many of you may know that there is a lot of division within the dog training industry (what’s new we hear you cry). Lately there has been a call for unity and a call for people with different training styles, ethics and core beliefs to come together and talk it out for the good of the dogs and humans. Here at PACT headquarters we thought we would record an episode talking through some of key points that are being debated and, more importantly, what we think about the question of unity and whether or not, we feel having these conversations/debates is useful.
We decided to predominantly record this for our PACT members and, of course, for anyone else that is listening that is a professional in the dog training industry, has an interest in becoming a dog trainer in the future or just loves dogs and wants what is best for them and their guardians moving forward. Having become directors of one of the training organisations that seem to be looked down upon in these discussions we thought we should go on the record and fight the good fight for animal welfare, wellbeing and ethics.
I would imagine that most of our listeners are pretty clear on where our ethical standards are. Those who listen will also have a good idea of what the science, especially welfare sciences, are informing us about the use of aversive methods on ALL individuals. So although we thought we’d discuss these topics this certainly isn’t a bridge to try to combine our ethical approach with one that we do not support. On top of that we are also individuals with different takes on different things so we really hope you enjoy this episode. Topics we cover include:
· What does regulation mean to us?
· What are ethics vs morals and how should that inform the decisions we make when interacting with animals?
· Is there an issue with a lack of practical training being offered by organisations. Is the landscape too theoretical?
· Should we have discussions between camps?
· Gish gallop & unfair debating tactics we see
· Time it takes to train purely positively
· Boundaries. Where are the lines in the sand?
· What makes an excellent trainer?
We have titled this talk “Le Chat Part un” I hope this is taken in the good hearted and tongue in cheek way it is intended and we have more to talk about so let us know if you’d be up for us recording a “Le Chat Part Deux” and we’ll get on it.
Join us this week Bookshelvers for a special episode with our BFF from across the pond Melissa McCue McGrath! There's SO much love we have for Melissa and we were thrilled to catch up with her to talk about everything that's happened between her last appearance and now (including her triumphant DOGx talk in 2023). Full of laughs and love we hope you'll enjoy this informal catch up. Slight trigger warning if you don't feel like hearing a story about a (narrowly avoided) septic tank disaster is Corrin and Steve's garden you might want to skip a little bit of this. As for those robust listeners... You're welcome!

BRACE YOURSELVES BOOKSHELVERS... FOR THE APOCALYPSE COMETH!
Well that's not strictly true BUT what if it did? What if a cataclysmic event wiped us hoomans off the face of the earth and left our dogs to fend for themselves without us? What would happen??? This is the premise of the wonderful book "A Dog's World" written by returning guest Jessica Pierce and co-authored with Marc Bekoff. We always say that BFTBS is NOT a review show, it's a recommends show and Nat and Steve couldn't recommend this book enough. A fascinating topic and super clever premise that opens up a world of learning about our canid companions. Not only do we delve deep into this topic with Jessica herself, we also talk about our presence and experience at Crufts, sagittal crests, dog bed addiction and answers some bloomin' wonderful bookshelver questions. We also have a very special "Story Time With Steve" section at the end all about Steve's recent trip to Crete where he befriended a free roaming dog called Bella. Put it in your head dog lovers!

10 Aug 2023
01:30:14
What's cooking Bookshelvers!?
This episode we are super excited to have the absolutely wonderful Dr Amber Batson joining us. It isn't everyday that you find a personality in the dog world who is both insanely interesting and ridiculously funny! We were thrilled to have Amber agree to talk at last years PACT Connecting Communities Conference, where she was a highlight for everyone who attended. This year Amber is returning to our conference (now rebranded as DOGx) and we know it's going to be just as great (if not better).
Dr Amber Batson graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 1999. She quickly became very interested in behaviour and undertook a number of qualifications about canine, feline and equine behaviour and welfare. Amber currently works primarily in providing education to owners and professionals in order to improve our understanding of behaviour both to aid our relationships with animals and also to better recognise and address any health/welfare issues. She feels passionately about bridging the gap between up to date science and practical applications of that information. She also continues to work in clinical practice as a behaviourist and as a vet.

Fitting this one in quickly so Carri could promote the up-coming release this was one of the only times that Steve didn’t get to read the book which, as you’ll hear, he is very upset about 😉. For that reason we have put this out as a long form interview rather than a “Book Review Episode”. Fear not however as you will still get a brain full of doggy goodness as usual.

On top of that we discuss both of Carri’s books (The Happy Dog Owner & Dogs Bites), Dave the virtual dog and the endless possibilities he brings and much, much more. Steve also goes solo with the intro and outro this week AND reads an exclusive audio version of a piece he wrote that fits with the general tone of todays conversation. So pop that kettle on and immerse yourself in dog geekery for a couple of hours.

Back just in time for a drastic weather change in the UK Corrin, Nat & Steve get to catch up with their old buddy and all round 'top dude' Jordan Shelley! Jordan is a Dog trainer and behaviour specialist - Animal welfare campaigner - Presenter, producer and writer as well as all that great stuff we all used to chew the proverbials on the "Barking Mad Show" back in the day so it was lovely to catch up and see what Jordan has been up to in his, always interesting, life.
It turns out that amongst other things Jordan has set up a very important petition to Ban the importation of dogs with cropped ears (a worthy cause indeed). In Jordans words: "There appears to be an alarming rise in dogs imported after undergoing the inhumane procedure of having their ears mutilated, fulfilling the desire for a certain ‘look’ & encouraging a procedure outlawed in England since 1899. It’s time to close this 121-year-old legal loophole".
This is a very important cause and we would love if all you Bookshelvers in the UK could sign the petition.
Slap us with a Spaniel Tail we are back for another review episode Bookshelvers!

What's going down Bookshelvers?
We hope to find you well in this bizarre time we are all stuck in. What can we say about this episode? Firstly Jessica Pierce is such a wonderful person and we loved the time we spent talking to her about her two amazing books. We genuinely think that "The Last Walk" is a masterpiece and something that everyone, when ready, should read and "Run, Spot, Run" is a real eye opener. Secondly there are some deep and potentially upsetting topics covered. It's not easy talking about the inevitable day our Pets leave us but it is important. We (of course) try to keep it as light hearted as possible but we are sure you understand that some of the anecdotes and topics can cut deeply :) Enough waffle from us.... Please do let us know what you think.
Jessica Pierce is a bioethicist and faculty affiliate at the Center for Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. With an advanced degree in psychology and animal behaviour, research conducted in behavioural neurobiology, and five years of shelter and rescue experience, Linda’s work bridges a gap between science, dog trainers, and pet parents with hands-on skills with dogs, wolfdogs, and the famed Belyaev foxes. Linda tells us, “My shelter experience working with the most difficult behavioural cases helped lay the foundation for all of the work I do today in animal care and training, protecting both the physical and the emotional well-being of the heartbeats at our feet.”
Linda is considered one of the modern-era, trailblazing experts and influencers in canine behaviour consulting and animal welfare advocacy. Her internationally acclaimed Hierarchy of Dog Need teaching tool, now translated into 14 languages, is endorsed by canine scientists and ethologists as well as trainers, new and seasoned, and is available FREE. The Hierarchy of Dog Needs offers a clear, dog-centric alternative to the outdated, teaching paradigms widely used today.
The Do No Harm Dog Training and Behaviour Handbook combines compassion with science in an easy-to-follow roadmap to success, providing answers to common and complex dog behaviour problems. Illustrating the most effective methods endorsed by the greatest minds in dog training and behaviour, dog lovers are taken on a journey to understanding and meeting their dog’s needs. The first section of The Do No Harm Dog Training and Behaviour Handbook is devoted to detailing each item on the Hierarchy of Dog Needs. By addressing needs first, pet parents and trainers often find that many behaviour problems may all but disappear. The meticulously researched handbook tackles the most challenging issues faced by dog lovers and pet professionals, including: nutrition, veterinary and grooming visits, basic training skills, aggression, and separation anxiety. With a foreword by Dr. Marc Bekoff, co-founder with Jane Goodall of the Ethologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the handbook is scientifically supported with 18 pages of scholarly journal citations and a detailed index.
You may find Linda in international trade magazines, and as a featured expert in Psychology Today online, Newsweek online, Huffington Post Live, Wolf Dog Radio, as an APBC, Dog-Centered Care, Barking Up the Right Tree International Festival for Reactive Dogs, KIENO Summit, Puppy Blueprint, Dog Wisdom webinar presenter, and speaker at the inaugural Pet Professional Guild Summit on “Understanding Research—Making the Case for Force-free Dog Training.”
Linda founded the wildly popular Do No Harm Dog Training Facebook group where you can easily find her, and recently launched the DoNoHarmDogTraining.com swag store.

Good day to you Bookshelvers! How the devil are you?
Well here is something guaranteed to brighten that commute, run or washing up session. This week we have been lucky enough to chin wag with Steve Mann.
For those who haven't heard of Steve (where have you been?) he is a force of nature in the Dog Training world. As well as being the head honcho and founder at the Institute For Modern Dog Training (IMDT) his recent book "Easy Peasy Puppy Squeezy" took the world by storm.
We caught up with Steve to chat about the book, hear some classic stories and get an answer to the question "what would dogs do all day if the could choose themselves"?
In other news Nat had injured herself fearlessly launching into an altercation and Steve reveals why he has a phobia of button up Jeans (oh god). Of course we have the usual examination of the book with dad jokes, jingles and japery included.
Please share, review and send us a question to be featured on an upcoming episode.
Steve Mann has been a professional dog trainer and behaviourist for over 30 years. He has trained over 100,000 dogs and thousands of professional dog trainers. He is founder and chairman of the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers and presents seminars, courses and workshops for dog trainers and behaviourists worldwide. A regular on TV, Steve has starred in several shows including The Underdog Show and Who Let The Dogs Out?, as well as appearing on BBC Breakfast and Lorraine. He has also trained some high-profile pups, including those of Graham Norton, Lorraine Kelly and Theo Walcott.
It’s time for another Off The Shelf episode and this week Steve,Nat and Corrin are joined by the amazing Helen Motteram. We have a deep chat about the journey Helen took starting back in 1998 with her dog Sally which was one of her inspirations to want to help people with their dogs. We also talk about Helens Bird rescue called ‘Russells Rescue’ and, of course, Russel himself (if you don’t know what we are on about you will love this). Helen runs Social Paws with her partner Tristan and they are based in Cheltnam.
Helen also runs the fantastic Pet Professional Network (which we all happen to be a member of) If you have a pet business it is well worth a look. Helen describes it here in her own words. “PPN is the first business support organisation and membership for pet professionals who do not use any form of aversive methodology (pain or intimidation) to train, walk or care for any pet. From my own personal results working with thousands of pets and rescue dogs, I’ve seen first hand how training without force has given long term results – confident dogs and happy owners. We apply this philosophy to people, too; employing a strict anti-bullying policy to protect our members, which fosters a true sense of belonging in a safe and confidential environment”.
All in all a fantastic human who tirelessly works with animals (inc us human animals) to make this world a better place :)
#12 Melissa McCue McGrath - Considerations For The City Dog

Howdy Doody Bookshelvers!
It's Episode 12 time. Melissa McCue-McGrath CPDT-KA is just amazing. We hit it off like a house on fire and we have all decided to move in together (ok that last part isn't true but we could!) Do your good selves a favour and find her on the interwebs and beyond you will not regret it. Her book "Considerations For The City Dog" opened our eyes to some unique challenges facing dogs living in our urban jungles. Written partly in response to a dog nearly killing a 6'4" man and his German shepherd in her home city. She consulted with veterinarians, rescue volunteers, behavior specialists, certified dog trainers, dog daycare providers, groomers and more to identify why urban dogs are failing, and what we need to do to help these dogs succeed.
As a added bonus Steve & Nat try to 'one up' themselves in a wildlife spotting competition and Steve forgets what day it is! I mean come listen it's a no brainer right?!?!
Melissa McCue-McGrath CPDT-KA Bio
Melissa McCue-McGrath, CPDT-KA is a certified professional dog trainer in greater Boston with over 10 years and 800 cases under her belt. She grew up in a dog-sledding family in rural Maine and now sits as the co-Training Director of New England Dog Training Club, the oldest AKC obedience club in the country. She advocates for urban canine sports and science-based training techniques to help dogs cope in the "new normal". Additionally, Melissa writes alongside one of her best friends, Dr. Sip Siperstein, for NPR's Car Talk FIDO Blog. She rather infrequently updates her MuttStuff blog and Muttstuff Facebook Page. As a result of this book, Melissa started #HandsOnFirst, a movement that encourages rescue groups and breeders to stop shipping dogs directly to potential dog owners sight-unseen. #HandsOnFirst explains what responsible rescues, shelters, fosters and reputable breeders actually look like, and educates people how to find a dog that will be best suited to their lifestyle and environment. She and her husband have a daughter named Aislyn. They currently live outside of Boston with their 2 cats, a fish and a snail. The McGraths are actively looking for their next family dog.
