S10: E1: Austin Ingerman (Gunshine) - Firepower in the Sunshine State
Date: January 7, 2026 Name of Podcast: Backstage Pass Radio S10: E1: Austin Ingerman (Gunshine) - Gunshine From Sunshine State
SHOW SUMMARY: Big riffs, big hooks, zero apologies. That’s the energy we chase with guitarist and songwriter Austin Ingerman of Gunshine, a Florida-born player who balances swagger with sharp songcraft. From Daytona beginnings to LA’s Musicians Institute and arena tours as a hired gun, Austin shares how those miles shaped a band built for choruses you can shout and guitars that actually feel dangerous again.
We talk origin stories the honest way: how a pandemic pause pushed Austin home, how early tracks came together before a singer was even in the room, and why the search for a voice with an X factor took years. When Jordan walked in from a dueling-piano bar, the chemistry clicked fast. The result is Gunshine’s “swampy” identity—Southern edge, modern punch—rooted in influences like Boston, Def Leppard, AC/DC, and a touch of early GNR. The name Gunshine nods to Florida’s nickname and the band’s sunburned grit, not a retro costume.
Songwriting sits at the center. Austin often starts with melodies and riffs captured on voice memos, while Jordan brings a Nashville-honed lyric lens and the number system to keep structures tidy. We break down “Bayou,” which began as Jordan’s country-leaning sketch and morphed into a layered modern rocker with a ramping chorus. The home-studio pipeline is real: tracks built in Austin’s space, files shipped to Chris Collier for mix and master, and a sound that still hits like a room full of amps. Theory helps in the background—tension, resolution, the occasional Mixolydian wink—but the rule is feel first.
Grand Rising, a 13-song album, arrives with more colors: piano textures, heavier corners, and a stealth seven-string thickening the choruses without stealing the spotlight. We dig into touring momentum after a successful run through venues like the Whisky and Sturgis, plus the realities of booking while transitioning agencies. Austin’s parting wisdom is pure working-musician truth: pick one job a day, finish it well, and let the songs lead everything else.
If you crave straight-ahead rock with big melodies and no filler, hit play, follow Gunshine on socials, and watch for the first single on January 23. Enjoy the conversation, then subscribe, share, and leave a quick review so more rock fans can find the show.

Date: December 17, 2025 Name of Podcast: Backstage Pass Radio S9: E11: Kendall Beard (Love & Chaos) - When Grit Meets Grace
SHOW SUMMARY: The story starts on Texas backroads and winds through Opry houses, a teen pop deal, and a reality TV spotlight before landing in an Austin room where sparks fly. Kendall Beard joins us to share how that winding path led to Love & Chaos, her electrifying duo with AJ Vallejo, and why the most interesting music often lives between labels.
We dig into the early hustle—weekend shows, VHS audition tapes, and a family that said yes when the dream demanded long drives. Kendall opens up about the label collapse around the Napster era, stepping back for college, and a detour into the business side that confirmed she needed to be on the creative front lines. You’ll hear a candid look at American Idol’s true timeline, the contract strings that stall momentum, and the unexpected upside: a loyal Texas fan base and new doors for songwriting and production.
Then the chemistry kicks in. A one-off duet with AJ turns into Love & Chaos, a project where country storytelling collides with rock muscle and a hint of Latin rhythm. We trace their four-year Saxon Pub residency, the craft behind their live duo setup with a suitcase kick drum, and the evolution of Rather Be Alone from sprawling art piece to tight radio edit without losing its pulse. Kendall breaks down their writing process—sometimes 50–50, sometimes whoever has the spark—and why inspiration shows up on runs, in dreams, and in those moments when life refuses to sit still. She also talks about balancing motherhood with touring, choosing fewer but more meaningful shows, and what’s next: a Texas radio tour, new singles, sessions at AJ’s new studio in Gruene, and fresh solo writing.
If you love Americana’s open borders, Texas grit, and songs built to breathe on stage, this conversation delivers. Follow Love & Chaos, spin the new single, and tell us which track caught you by surprise. If you enjoy the show, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review to help more music fans find us.

S9: E2 - Mary Kutter - From Bootlegging to Nashville
Date: July 23, 2025 Name of podcast: Backstage Pass Radio S9: E2 - Mary Kutter - From Bootlegging to Nashville
SHOW SUMMARY: What does it take to stand out in the crowded Nashville music scene? For Mary Kutter, it's about being the splash of red paint on a wall of white—creating music that cuts through the noise with authenticity and purpose.
Born and raised just outside the Bourbon Capital of the World in Springfield, Kentucky, Mary's journey to Nashville began with an unexpected opportunity hosting a radio variety show. This serendipitous break led to a life-changing connection with legendary songwriter Kim Williams, who recognized something special in the young artist and opened doors that would transform her career. As Mary shares, "That job offer changed my life."
When the pandemic shut down the music industry in 2020, Mary faced a pivotal moment. Rather than stepping back, she doubled down on her craft, writing seven days a week, two to three sessions daily, for nearly two years straight. This relentless work ethic yielded her first gold record and substantial placements in movies and commercials—all created through Zoom sessions with collaborators she couldn't meet in person.
What truly distinguishes Mary's artistry is her willingness to explore complex, personal narratives. Her viral hit "Devil Wore a Lab Coat" confronts the pharmaceutical industry's role in the opioid epidemic that devastated her Kentucky hometown. "Devil's Money" tells the remarkable true story of her bootlegger great-grandfather who used his illicit earnings to build a church. These songs resonate deeply because they speak truth, regardless of commercial appeal.
From unexpected collaborations with rapper Project Pat to her disciplined creative routine beginning at 5 AM daily, Mary embodies the modern artist who forges her own path. Her approach to songwriting combines raw authenticity with strategic savvy, sharing snippets on social media that connect so deeply with fans they're singing unreleased verses at her shows.
As Mary prepares for headline performances, festival appearances, and new music releases, her advice to aspiring artists remains straightforward: "Put your blinders on and keep the pedal down." Through every challenge and triumph, she's remained true to herself—creating music that matters and leaving an indelible mark on the Nashville landscape, one honest song at a time.
Subscribe now to hear more compelling stories from artists who are redefining the boundaries of their craft and building careers on their own terms.

At 15 years old Gabe recorded his first 2 song demo in Nashville with his brother’s high school buddy Touchstone Mcdonald. When Gabe turned 16, his brother left to college leaving behind a guitar that Gabe self taught himself with and where a year later Gabe joined a band from Pearsall, Texas called the “Texas Wranglers”. During a family vacation in South Padre Island, Gabe and his dad met Clint Bullard, a Nashville songwriter who was performing at a nearby hotel. Clint allowed Gabe to sing a few songs and months after Gabe and his brother flew out to Nashville to cut a full country album with Clint. In high school, with some musical experiences already under his belt, at age 17 he was asked to sing and compete for his high school FFA program. Gabe competed in and won all rounds of the competitions and performed back to back years at the National FFA Convention.
After playing with country band the “Texas Wranglers” Gabe and the band regrouped and began a new band renaming themselves the “Maverick Creek Cowboys”. Gabe and the band toured the South Texas scene gaining a following and also later landing a First Place spot at the Annual State Colgate Country Showdown. After graduating from high school Gabe landed a job in San Antonio working 8 years for CPS Energy and using every vacation day traveling back and forth to Nashville gaining major attention from major record labels while working with Bart Bartler. Bart and his Dad Bill Butler from Hondo, Texas were introduced to Gabe by friend Tommy Calame. Bart who is a successful songwriter & producer in Nashville continued working with Gabe where in 2006 he produced another full country album with Gabe that gained more major label interest and hinted for Gabe to move to Nashville. In 2007 Gabe hit the hardest time of his life when his dad Juan J. Garcia Sr. passed away. With Gabe’s dad and family being very supportive in his musical accomplishments Gabe then decided to quit his job, sell his home, and finally move to Nashville in January 2008.
After 3 months into moving to Nashville Gabe landed a spot on NBC’s then popular show Nashville Star in 2008 where he placed First Runner-up out of 65,000 total contestants that tried out. Shortly after the show Gabe was taken in by Manager Erv Woosley, whom currently still manages George Strait. Gabe and Erv worked together for 2 years while also landing a one year songwriting deal with Bill Butler Music who published well known Strait songs such as “Baby Blue” and “Love Without End Amen”. After the 2 years Gabe was then managed and signed to another writing deal with John Rich of country duo “Big & Rich”. While working With John, Gabe landed a record deal with Average Joe’s Entertainment out of Nashville. After 5 years of living in Nashville Gabe decided to just follow his roots back to South Texas. As he continues to travel back and forth between Tennessee and Texas, Gabe left his Nashville label and began his own current label 396 Entertainment with Dallas, Texas buddy Jody Redlich.
While Gabe has had an awesome adventure in his long running music career and experiences playing the smokey bars of South Texas, opening for major country artists in large venues, being on major network television, toured and played Canada and France, radio stations playing his music all over the world, and many more accomplishments under his belt, Gabe continues to love his passion for music which he will never let down. Gabe has 3 country albums "Shotglass", "Missing", and "Cold Beer and a Suntan" available on iTunes, Spotify, and Pandora. You can connect with Gabe via his social media accounts located above or for more info and tour dates right here on gabegarcia.com.
S2: E5: Zak Perry & Special Guest Ned Evett - Guitars, Dogs, & Beautiful Things (REMASTERED)
Originally from St. Charles, Missouri, and the son of a musical family (both his mother and father were singers and songwriters), Zak Perry was curiously destined not to become a musician. Instead he was to become a professional golfer. This did not sit well with the young man, however, “I knew deep down that this was not the direction I wanted to take. That’s when I decided I wanted to set up a band. It was certainly a form of rebellion,” Zak recalled to the Texas based www.galvestonislandguide.com website.
During his tenure in New York, Zak made several fateful encounters including Tim Beattie of The Four Horsemen and Marry Me Jane and guitarist Tony Saracene. However, there was one chance meeting that would solidify the next piece of the musical foundation that Zak had been trying to construct since he wrote his first song at the age of 13; in 1997 Zak met guitarist Vern Vennard. Vern, who’s most recent gig at that point had been as a guitar tech for Marry Me Jane recalls, “Tim and Zak were part of a songwriters circle gig at the Bitter End in New York City. I was just hanging out cuz I knew so many of the cats that were playing that night. I was hanging backstage and he came up to me and said that he had a small mid-western tour coming up and would I be interested in going with him. Except, I thought he wanted me to be a guitar tech!”
Vern realized that Zak actually wanted him in the band when, just before leaving, he turned to Vern and asked, “you play slide, right?”
So began the journey that took Zak and Vern from NYC to Memphis, TN and then to St. Louis, MO where they meet the next person to become a loyal musical companion: Drummer Jason Charron. With a revolving cast of bass players in tow, the core trio leaves the Midwest for the musical Mecca of Austin, TX, where, in 2000, they form the combo Ma Driver. Soon after adding the fourth key player, Scott “Sting” Ray on bass Zak re-christened the group, The Zak Perry Band, further defining his true musical signature.
Since 2016, Zak Perry has been performing regularly for his European audiences. To date, he has engaged in five tours, either with the band or as an acoustic duo with Vern, in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. The very first acoustic duo tour in 2016 was documented by the live album “Unplugged In Belgium” , which received a rave review in Blues Magazine NL.
Stimulated by the warm European welcome, Zak and the band ensconced to their home studio in 2017 to record “Marrow”, the first release featuring the band’s brand new name of Zak Perry & The Beautiful Things. A name change that is significant in that it reflects the beautiful adventures that Zak and the band have come to know with his European audience. This veteran of the American independent scene now claims to be deeply attached to the Old Continent, a fact illustrated by adding to the Beautiful Things French musicians Julien Mahieux on drums and Guillaume Maillard on bass and by Zak now considering the North of France as his new home; shown by a brand new song, “Preux-Au-Sart”, written about the northern village in France the band uses as their European base of operations.
In fact, several brand new songs will accompany “Preux-Au-Sart” on the release of the band’s next album: “Live In France” from Yokatta Records, which is available April 2019. Although it is the eleventh release of his career it is the first that Zak has recorded outside the United States.
And so, it is to the growing audience on the European side of the Atlantic that the band now turns their attention on continuing the musical journey of Zak Perry & The Beautiful Things. Don’t Miss It!
Mixing country music with the hard-hitting stomp of rock & roll, Cory Marks prepares to release new music. Full of autobiographical storytelling, guitar-driven anthems, drinking songs, and breakup ballads, his songs are rooted in the influence of Cory's hometown, where he grew up surrounded by the salt-of-the-earth residents of North Bay, Ontario. It was there where he began playing drums at ten years old. Whenever he wasn't banging along to songs by Deep Purple, Ozzy Osbourne, and Rush, he was listening to his parents' country records, developing a deep appreciation for outlaws like Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard. Those two genres — classic country and amped-up rock — would eventually join forces in Marks' own music, earning him a string of gigs with heavyweights like Toby Keith and Brantley Gilbert along the way.
Before launching his songwriting career, and changing the trajectory of his life, Marks would prove himself in the hockey rink and pursue dreams of becoming a fighter pilot. He strapped on his first pair of skates at 3 years old, eventually earning a spot on the university hockey team at Royal Military College, and was a dominating presence on the ice, thanks to his 6-foot 1 inch, 220-pound frame. Prior to attending college, he enrolled in a private pilot school where he logged in almost 100 flight hours and eventually had the opportunity to fly one of those hours with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds in the summer of 2017. He continues working towards his private pilot license.
While in college, he never stopped playing music but did so privately… that is, until he joined his teammates at a local bar one night, and found himself pushed onstage when the regularly-scheduled musician took a break. "My friends knew I played a little music, and they were chanting for me to do some songs," he remembers. "It was a packed little bar. I did two originals and two covers, and afterward, people were coming up to me and asking where I was playing next. I didn't have an answer for them, because this was literally the first time I'd ever sung in front of anyone." Cory began making weekly trips to the bar, hopping on stage with each visit. As time went on, he wrote a new batch of songs, hit the road, and hasn't looked back since.
A road warrior, Cory has built a strong following not only in Canada but also in America, where he has been recording with award-winning producer, Kevin Churko. Along with Kevin’s son Kane – the Juno Award-winning producer and songwriter, the three of them worked together in Churko's Las Vegas studio, capturing the energy and electricity of Cory's live show. It was a natural partnership. Like Cory, Kevin had grown up playing drums, eventually expanding his career to include collaborations with country artists like Shania Twain and rock icons like Ozzy Osbourne. "We both appreciate country music greats like Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings, but we love the heavier side of rock & roll and metal, too," Cory says of his producer and mentor. "We decided to mash it all together. It's funny because when I was growing up, my favorite records were Ozzy records. I dreamt of having that kind of production on one of my own records. Sure enough, seven years into my career, I've partnered with the producer who worked on all those albums. What a cool circle."
S2: E3: Michael Sweet (Stryper / Boston) - All This & Heaven Too
Adam Hamilton was raised in Shreveport, Louisiana, and began playing drums at the age of three. As a child, Hamilton began aspiring to a professional music career through listening to both his father's records and to the music on the radio. While attending Captain Shreve High school, he experimented heavily with production and engineering and produced demos for local bands in Shreveport. After graduating from high school in 1988, Hamilton moved to Dallas, Texas, and then to Austin to pursue music.
While Hamilton was performing at a club in Austin, he met Poison guitarist C.C. DeVille, who invited Hamilton to move to Los Angeles. Hamilton lived in DeVille's home for a time, and played drums in DeVille's post-Poison band The C.C. DeVille Experiment. Other members of this band included Joey C. Jones of 1980s glam metal band Sweet Savage, and Christopher Torak of Liquor Sweet. During the time they were together, The C.C. DeVille Experiment also went by the name The C.C. DeVille Experience. The band, minus DeVille, ended up leaving Los Angeles, relocating to Dallas and Shreveport, and renaming themselves Joey C. Jones and the Glory Hounds, with Hamilton's hometown friend Craig Bradford replacing DeVille on guitar. Joey C. Jones and the Glory Hounds released one self-titled album on Tony Nicole Tony (TNT) Records in 1993; the album featured songs written by C.C. DeVille and by Robin Zander and Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick.

S1: E23: JR Robison (Taylor Guitars) - A Spokesman For Tonewood (Remastered)
JR Robison is a District Sales Manager at Taylor Guitars. In this interview, we discuss guitar collecting, tonewoods, models, and new guitars out from Taylor Guitars. We also talk about JR's recent move from Ramona California to San Antonio Texas so that he can better serve his reseller community.
Taylor Guitars was founded in 1974 by Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug, and has grown into the leading global builder of premium acoustic guitars. Renowned for blending modern, innovative manufacturing techniques with a master craftsman's attention to detail, Taylor acoustic guitars are widely considered among the best-sounding and easiest to play in the world. The company is a pioneer in the use of computer mills, lasers and other high-tech tools and proprietary machinery, and today, Bob Taylor is widely recognized throughout the musical instrument industry as the visionary acoustic guitar manufacturer.
Today, Taylor employs over 1,200 people and produces hundreds of guitars per day exclusively in two factory complexes in the U.S and Mexico: El Cajon, California, and in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico. (Taylor does not manufacture any guitars in Asia.) The company maintains an active dealer network, with Taylor guitars sold through hundreds of retail locations in North America and with international distribution to 60 countries, including a distribution warehouse and factory service center in the Netherlands.
Our site has a wealth of information about what goes into making a Taylor guitar and how to make this very important decision. We have guides for how to find the right fit for you. Learn about the subtle differences in shapes and styles. Delve into different types of woods and construction, which are vital to the flavor and tone of an acoustic. Explore the Taylor line by series to find the look and style you want for your instrument.
Every guitar player needs a great acoustic guitar – or several – in their collection. Finding the right acoustic guitar for you can be a daunting process even for the most seasoned player. If you are new to shopping for guitars, then it is even more critical that you learn all you can before you make your first purchase. If your first acoustic guitar is not the appropriate choice for you, then it can dramatically reduce the enjoyment you will get out of your instrument. If you are a new guitar player, the wrong guitar can be downright discouraging. You want a guitar that fits you, is effortless to play, and has the rich, beautiful tone you love to make it the instrument you dream of playing hour after hour.
S1: E22: Mark Knight (Bang Tango) - Tango's and Unsung Heroes (Remastered)
For many musicians, separating themselves from their past is nearly impossible, especially when the past includes a successful career as a founding member of an 80’s funk metal band like Bang Tango. The old hits and looks are almost inseparable from their current art, despite the clear differences and the years in between. Many become stuck in a limbo of who they were and who they want to be, but Mark Knight has only been spurred on by the challenges of what’s in his rearview mirror and who he is now as an artist.
In 2013’s Road Sick Eyes, Knight smashed through the glass ceiling of his past and unabashedly displayed his frustration with his former image and triumphantly revealed himself to be a roots rock, Americana singer, songwriter, and guitarist to be reckoned with.
Now, with the success of Road Sick Eyes, several other solo efforts and a divorce under his belt, two teenage daughters, and life being rebuilt in progress, Mark Knight finds Knight presenting an album; a unified collection of stories more daring and personal than ever before. All songs were composed solely by Knight, who also played most of the guitars, both acoustic and electric, on the record.
Mark Knight is filled with wrenching solo acoustic songs and Knight’s signature roots rockers featuring his longtime collaborators including Matt Abts of Gov’t Mule and Planet of the Abts, Tony Marsico on bass, Mark Tremalgia (formerly of Bang Tango) on guitar, Reeve Downes of Rhino Bucket on bass and Tigg Ketler (formerly of Bang Tango) on drums. Mark Knight was produced by Tom Lavin, who also produced Road Sick Eyes, and recorded swiftly in a private studio in which “raw” remained the battle cry.
Knight approached the record with a desire for rawness and simplicity, creating a gripping, unflinching account of his trials and tribulations. He doesn’t cheat himself or his audience with the raw emotion, doubts, courage, and honesty he displays.
“Since Road Sick Eyes, my life has changed dramatically and those personal challenges and triumphs naturally came out in the music,” says Knight. “I wanted to be honest with and about myself and uncompromising, even if I had to lay myself on the line.”
Knight’s time has come to grow into himself as a songwriter and musician, and in listening to Knight’s growth, we also hear ourselves, reflect on the years and feel the innate desire to stretch out of our own skins.
S1: E21: Sandee June - Hummingbirds, Doves, and Talking Horses (REMASTERED)
Dreaming Big, Carving a Path and Never Detouring Independent country artist Sandee June has a way of drawing you in with her rich, soothing tone and instantly connecting you with the lyrics of a song. She’s a singer, songwriter and lifelong Texan who grew up listening to her parents’ music – Michael Martin Murphey, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Cat Stevens and Elton John. She admits she has classic rock in her soul, but when she sings, it always “comes out country.” Maybe that’s because time spent with her grandparents always included listening to Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn – two of her all-time music heroes. There’s no doubt you can hear the influences of these two country music icons every time Sandee June steps up to a microphone.
Just like her heroes, the storytelling quality in her voice is not something she learned – it’s a God-given gift that perfectly reflects the experiences of her life. You see, Sandee June’s path in music isn’t typical, but one she is uniquely carving on her own, fueled by words of wisdom from her parents that she’s carried with her since she was a child.
While she’s always kept those words close to her heart, for the past 30 years she has focused on her children and a career in nursing. “There are a lot of things I would have liked to have done for myself, but I knew it would take two incomes to raise a big family. I thought, if I’m going to work, I am going to get a degree and make good money,” she said. “When I got accepted to nursing school, I had a 3-month-old, a 2-year-old, a 4-year- old and an 8-year-old. I look back on that now and think – how in the world did I do that? But I did.”
With that same grit and determination – on her 50th birthday – she remembered her parents’ advice and set out to achieve a new goal. “I have always had a deep passion for music, so when I turned 50, I woke up and thought – this is the perfect time to do something for me. So, I went and bought myself a guitar,” she said. She taught herself to play guitar by watching YouTube videos and then realized it would be a lot more fun to sing along. Soon after, her fiancé, Ed Bradley, heard her and said, “by God, I think you can sing!”
Empowered with six strings and a silky, classic country voice, she decided to start playing at open mics in the Clear Lake and Dickinson areas, southeast of Houston. The positive response she received encouraged her to start recording music and sharing it with others. “When I set my mind to do something, I don’t detour. I don’t get off track, I just do it,” she said. In October 2020, she released her first song to Texas country radio – “Somewhere Between Hell and a Honky Tonk.”
Sandee June is beyond happy with her new journey and has already experienced great opportunities including opening for Texas country artist Josh Ward. “The first time we saw Josh Ward was at Armadillo Palace in Houston. He was walking around the corner and I stopped him and asked if I could have a picture with him. I was starstruck at the time, and then there I was on Labor Day weekend, one of his opening acts. That was a Cinderella story for me,” she added.
What excites her most now is seeing her dream come to life and knowing that her children and grandchildren are watching and supporting her. “My kids were shocked at first – wow, what’s going on? Mom turns 50 and joins a band,” she laughed. “My grandkids just think it’s the best. We have the best time in our music room. They all grab a guitar or a microphone and want to sing and play. I hope it inspires them, as well, to be creative in life and keep learning.”
Sandee June hopes to be an inspiration to all and encourages people to dream big, create their own path, and never detour.

Cindy Alexander is no stranger to overcoming the odds: A cancer survivor, mother of twin girls, and a successful touring independent artist for 15 years prior to signing with Blue Élan Records. Writing a record while her mother was dying from dementia, recording while navigating a world of pandemic and protests, and trying to finish anything while teaching her kids from home during a “Safer at Home” order were just a few more elements to add to her already colorful story of personal perseverance. Cindy tells it like it is – the Truth with a capital “T.” As Cindy says, “I can’t pretend that everything’s ok, because it’s not. But, I always see the light – in you, in me, in the world that was created from it. My journey in this body is about finding it, sharing it, becoming it. It’s a struggle. It’s painful. It’s delightful. It’s ecstatic.” While the Angels Sigh is at once a musical affirmation of personal power and grace and an acceptance of human weakness and fallibility. Cindy Alexander has written a songbook for the sandwich generation, with wisdom for millennials, and gratitude to the generations that came before her.
It took two years to curate the song list with executive producer and label co-founder, Kirk Pasich. “It was two years of me digging deep, during a dark time, to believe in myself and my musical mission, even if others did not,” Cindy explains. “I committed to sharing my truth and my passion, to work with people who could help me manifest my vision, and seized the opportunity to create without being edited, censored, or silenced. I am so very blessed that Blue Élan Records gave me that opportunity.”
By late 2019, Cindy Alexander sat in Sage & Sound Studio with a dream team of musicians, led by producer/bass player Sean Hurley and producer/drummer Victor Indrizzo. The first song they tackled was “Try Try Try,” a co-write with Cindy’s career-long collaborator, Grammy award-nominated producer, and songwriter, David Darling. The song is about trying to connect and reignite the passion when life gets in the way and distracts us from what really matters. While writing the song, a distracted Cindy had fallen and broken her elbow and wrist while running to make a meeting (“at least I feel alive…bleeding from a break”). It was Kirk’s idea to record a second “live” version of the song (all players in one room in one take) as an acoustic ballad, turning a sexy bar burner into a trippy, hypnotic siren song.
“Room at the Bottom,” a tongue in cheek ode to the down and out musician, as well as an answer to Tom Petty’s “Room at the Top,” was built around a signature guitar lick by David Levita (Alanis Morissette, Lana Del Rey, Sheryl Crow) and a scrappy, beat-up piano part by Michael Farrell (Alanis Morissette, Macy Gray), achieved by placing three No.2 pencils on the piano strings to create the distortion.
“Broken but Beloved,” a song about impermanence, was recorded with Grammy award-winning producer and engineer Ross Hogarth at Sunset Sound. It was the last in-person session before the Los Angeles lockdown order took effect in March 2020. Cindy’s dear friend and touring buddy, Michael Bacon (one-half of the Bacon Brothers and award-winning composer) contributed cello from his studio in New York. After recording his part, he sent Cindy a note, in which she found the title of her new record:
“When I write my ‘Remediation Practices for Enduring the Pandemic,’ chapter 2 will read 1. Get an amazing lifelong friend who’s got Beverly Hills chops but keeps it real. 2. Have her write a beautiful song. 3. Have her ask you to put 1,000,000 cell parts on it. 4. Do that. Title of the album: ‘While the Angels Sigh.’”
Tracks were transferred back and forth throughout the 2020 quarantine between home studios and finally finished up in Cin
Date: June 35, 2025 Name of podcast: Backstage Pass Radio S8: E10: Rikki Rockett (Poison) - Greatest Hits and Hardest Battles
SHOW SUMMARY: What happens when death stares you in the face, and you not only survive but thrive? Rikki Rockett, the original drummer of hair metal legends Poison, takes us on an extraordinary journey through his remarkable life both on and off the stage in this candid conversation.
With disarming honesty, Rikki shares the terrifying moment when what seemed like a simple sore throat turned into a stage four cancer diagnosis with just a 10% chance of survival. His miraculous recovery through an innovative immunotherapy clinical trial not only saved his life but also transformed his perspective completely. "You can have 99 problems, but if you have a medical problem, you got one," he reflects, explaining how facing mortality taught him to value time above all else.
Long before his health battle, Rikki's musical journey began in Pennsylvania with a $50 drum set and dreams of rock stardom. He takes us through Poison's early days hustling on the Sunset Strip, revealing the ingenious guerrilla marketing tactics they employed—from personally thanking fans at venue exits to strategically writing about themselves in club bathrooms. These authentic connections helped Poison stand apart in the overcrowded LA scene of the 1980s.
Beyond his rock credentials, Rikki unveils his fascinating life as a fourth-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and paranormal investigator. His approach to urban legends and ghost hunting reflects his thoughtful nature, seeking the historical facts behind myths before exploring any supernatural elements. "I think 98% of it is BS, but that 2% is truly amazing," he explains, showing the same curiosity that's driven his diverse passions.
Looking ahead to Poison's 40th anniversary in 2026, Rikki shares plans for a major tour with all original members intact—a remarkable achievement in the often-fractured world of rock bands. Whether you're a longtime fan or discovering his story for the first time, Rikki Rockett's tale of resilience, creativity, and constant reinvention will inspire you to approach life's challenges with both determination and wonder.

Date: June 11, 2025 Name of podcast: Backstage Pass Radio S8: E9: Liz Spencer - From Silence to Stage
SHOW SUMMARY: "My ability in music kind of made me stand out," reveals singer-songwriter Liz Spencer in this candid conversation about finding her musical identity. From playing melodies by ear on a toy piano at age four to becoming a full-time musician after a decade-long silence, Spencer's journey is both heartbreaking and triumphant.
The New England-based artist shares how cancer and the loss of her best friend silenced her creative voice for ten years until an unexpected connection with actor C. Thomas Howell reignited her passion through acting lessons that transferred to music. "Once the floodgates opened and I was able to write again, I realized that I can't ever not do this," Spencer explains, describing the moment she committed to music despite the fears and perfectionism that had held her back.
Spencer discusses her recent single "Losing Hand," a powerful anthem born from relationship deception, and her duet "Annie" with fellow New England musician Nick Bossy. She reveals the challenges of balancing performing with songwriting, having played over 80 shows last summer while still developing her catalog. Now working on "3000 Miles," a song about the geographical distance between her and her husband before their paths crossed, Spencer continues to push herself toward greater vulnerability in her writing.
What emerges most clearly is Spencer's evolution from concern about external validation to creating authentic music for herself first. "I decided that this is for me and this is what I want to do," she says of her musical rebirth just three years ago. For anyone who's ever set aside a passion only to rediscover it later, Spencer's story serves as powerful inspiration to follow your creative instincts regardless of timing or perfection.

Date: May 28, 2025 Name of podcast: Backstage Pass Radio S8: E6: Graham Bonnet & Beth-Ami Heavenstone - The Legend and the Forever Friend
SHOW SUMMARY: Rock legend Graham Bonnet and bassist/manager Beth-Ami Heavenstone invite listeners into their world for an intimate conversation about music, recovery, and what's next for the Graham Bonnet Band. Fresh from battling COVID-19, the pair reflects on the unique challenges vocalists face—a sentiment Bonnet captures perfectly when he states, "The voice is the hardest instrument to play... the guitar is easy compared to this."
The conversation weaves through exciting announcements about their upcoming live DVD recorded at the historic Whiskey a Go Go, a venue deeply meaningful to both artists as their first performance space together. Fans will be thrilled to learn about the band's fourth studio album in progress, featuring a special collaboration with Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson. Bonnet shares his creative process, including a touching tribute song to the underappreciated guitar virtuoso Rory Gallagher, revealing the thoughtful songwriter behind the powerful voice.
Some of the most compelling moments emerge when Bonnet opens up about his remarkable past—from his early connection to the Bee Gees (his cousin Trevor Gordon was originally part of the group in Australia) to his heartfelt remembrance of drummer Cozy Powell, whose 1998 passing still visibly moves him. The emotional gravity in Bonnet's voice as he recalls seeing two rainbows touch the hillside after learning of Powell's death demonstrates that behind the legendary rock persona is a deeply feeling human being who treasures these connections.
Between European tour preparations, managing multiple projects, and their life together raising chickens in LA, Bonnet and Heavenstone offer a refreshingly authentic glimpse into their world. Their playful banter and surprising personal revelations—Graham's unexpected love for figure skating and Antiques Roadshow, Beth-Ami's bird watching hobby—create a warm, inviting atmosphere that makes listeners feel like they're sitting in their living room. Whether you've followed Graham's career for decades or are discovering his extraordinary voice for the first time, this conversation captures the spirit of a rock legend who remains humble, creative, and utterly passionate about music.

S8: E4: Julia Lage (Bass Player - Vixen / Smith/Kotzen) A Magnificent Musical Migration
Date: April 2, 2025 Name of podcast: Backstage Pass Radio S8: E4: Julia Lage (Bass Player - Vixen / Smith/Kotzen) A Magnificent Musical Migration
SHOW SUMMARY: Julia Lage's musical journey crosses oceans, genres, and expectations. The current touring bassist for iconic all-female rock band Vixen opens up about her unexpected path from classical beginnings to rock stardom.
Growing up in São Paulo, Brazil, Julia's first musical love wasn't the bass but the flute. Attending an arts-focused Waldorf school, she developed her ear playing classical instruments but failed an orchestra audition because she couldn't sight-read. This disappointment became a turning point when her mother introduced her to rock music – Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Aerosmith – opening a world of possibility that would shape her future.
By 17, Julia was touring Brazil with a successful band for 13 years, playing to massive crowds (once performing for 2.5 million people!) and appearing on major TV shows. But despite commercial success, she felt creatively unfulfilled. Her life transformed when she met guitarist Richie Kotzen (now her husband), leading to her relocation to Los Angeles and fresh musical opportunities. Through connections and remarkable talent, she joined Vixen in 2021, collaborates with Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden) and Richie in their Smith/Kotzen project, and creates compelling solo material in her home studio.
What shines through our conversation is Julia's authenticity and genuine passion. While discussing her various projects – including upcoming Vixen music, Smith/Kotzen's new album featuring her bass on five tracks, and her solo singles – she reveals the challenges of balancing creative work with the business side of music. Her advice to aspiring musicians comes from hard-earned wisdom: know what you want to accomplish, focus on that path, and pursue it with genuine passion.
Follow Julia's musical adventures on all platforms under Julia Lage (L-A-G-E) and discover why this classically-trained flautist-turned-rock-bassist continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

S8 E3: Holly Knight - (Hall of Fame Singer, Songwriter, Musician, Author) - I Am The Warrior
Date: March 12, 2025 Name of podcast: Backstage Pass Radio S8 E3: Holly Knight - (Hall of Fame Singer, Songwriter, Musician, Author) - I Am The Warrior
SHOW SUMMARY: Meet Holly Knight, the songwriting force behind some of the most iconic rock and pop anthems of all time. From "Love is a Battlefield" to "The Best," Holly crafted lyrics and melodies that defined the MTV era and continue to resonate today.
Starting as a classical piano prodigy at age four, Holly's path took a dramatic turn when she left home at 15 to pursue her rock and roll dreams. What followed was an extraordinary journey from performing in clubs to writing chart-topping hits that would be recorded by legends like Tina Turner, Pat Benatar, Aerosmith, and Rod Stewart.
Holly shares the fascinating story of her musical evolution - from her early days in the band Spider to her pivotal meeting with producer Mike Chapman that launched her songwriting career. With refreshing candor, she reveals the organic nature of her creative process, describing how melodies seem to flow through her fingers "like a Ouija board" when she sits at a piano or guitar. This approach has yielded an astonishing legacy: Holly currently ranks in the top 1% of songwriters globally with over 2.3 billion streams in 2024 alone.
Beyond the hits themselves, our conversation explores the changing music industry landscape, from the analog days of liner notes to today's digital streaming world where songwriters often remain invisible. We discuss Holly's 2013 induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (one of only sixteen women among 400+ male inductees at that time), her bestselling memoir "I Am the Warrior," and her passion for black and white photography. If you've ever wondered about the creative mind behind some of rock's most empowering anthems, this episode offers a fascinating glimpse into the life and work of a true songwriting legend.

S9: E10: dUg Pinnick (Kings X / Grinder Blues) Motown Roots to Metal Truths
Date: November 26, 2025 Name of podcast: Backstage Pass Radio S9: E10: dUg Pinnick (Kings X / Grinder Blues) Motown Roots to Metal Truths
SHOW SUMMARY: A voice that can shake a room and a bass tone you can feel in your ribs—dUg Pinnick of King’s X joins us for a candid, wide-open conversation about art, survival, and building a sound that refuses the mold. From a childhood spent glued to record players to the thunder of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, dUg traces how Motown roots and gospel grit fused with heavy riffs to form the King’s X blueprint. We talk about the business as he’s lived it—70 years of evolution and disruption—why validation culture can starve the soul, and how a band can stay small on charts yet massive in people’s lives.
dUg breaks down his uniquely architectural approach to writing: drum groove first, guitars and bass next, and lyrics last, pulled straight from lived emotion. He opens the hood on tone design, too—signal splitting for grit and chime, frequency carving that lets bass feel huge without drowning guitars, and why a 12‑string bass keeps his hands honest. We revisit the Dogman era with producer Brendan O’Brien, tuning choices that made the record hit like their live show, and the stubborn love that fuels a cult following decade after decade.
There’s warmth and wit here—AC/DC dinner stories, the joy of seeing U2 at the Rose Bowl, and the humility of knowing fans bring their own history to every chorus. dUg shares what’s next: final tweaks on his solo record, the spark of a rock-and-roll cooking show, and a stack of ideas ready for the next King’s X chapter. If you care about songwriting, bass tone, heavy music history, or simply staying true when trends shift, this conversation delivers depth you can use and heart you can feel.
If this moved you, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review so more music fans can find it.
