The Fremont Troll - Seattle's Mysterious Resident13 Sep 202400:17:38

In the bustling metropolis of Seattle, Washington, a curious resident claims the shadows beneath Aurora Bridge ….

Those who dare to venture below the bridge- more accurately, those that survive to tell the tale - speak of his sheer size, stern gaze and possessive nature…

But few can tell you the reason for his residency … and that, my friends is a story worth telling.

This is the story of the Fremont Troll

In depth:

What if a single piece of public art could encapsulate the history, culture, and spirit of an entire neighborhood? Join us as we explore the captivating tale of Seattle's Fremont Troll. Beginning with the nostalgic Norwegian folklore of "The Three Billy Goats Gruff," we unravel how this story inspired the creation of the 18-foot, 13,000-pound sculpture that has since become an icon of the Fremont neighborhood.

Wander with us through Fremont's vibrant streets—teeming with artists, students, and tech professionals—and witness firsthand the community's deep connection to this monumental troll.

Walden (Part 1) - Before the Pond23 Jul 202400:21:38

Walden Pond - just 22 miles away from Boston Common - has become synonymous with solitude, retreat and thoughtful reflection.

Henry David Thoreau  famously builds a log cabin along its shore and describes the assertive tranquility of the water and surrounding area as “Lower Heaven.”

It’s here where the Thoreau pens the now classic work, Walden

It’s here where, Ralph Waldo Emerson reflects on the national world.

It’s here - where people continue to make the pilgrimage to it’s calm shores in the hopes of finding similar solitude …

But the real story of Walden Pond is surprising as well as thought provoking; it provokes our settled assumption of Thoreau as a hermit poet and of the lake as his impenetrable retreat.

Van Life Diaries - Anxiety on the Road11 Jul 202400:13:20

Anxiety can be heightened, suppressed, multiplied, or straight up non-existent on the road…

I’ve lived with anxiety WELL before I hit the road -  so are some stories and reflections from living with that anxiety while living in a van.

The positive, negative and everything in between.

As always, we’ll also take listener questions at the end, which include:

What do you do for internet?

Where do I park to see the lone toilet?

What episodes are coming up?

Where you do record your podcasts?

What’s the most interesting fact about Gettysburg you’ve found it your research?

U-TURN! - Back Through the Fairy Door11 Jul 202400:14:59

Today we dive into both oral and written Fairy Tales inspired by our last episode on The Fairy Door in Minneapolis.

-

For a large portion of history,

Tales and fables were passed down - not in writing -    but through the spoken word ….

Changing inevitably and often irreversibly with each retelling.

A story might be tweaked to satisfy a particularly difficult audience - or changed entirely by a rebellious storyteller …

It was alive - always adapting and growing …

Van Life Diaries - Safety on the Road04 Jul 202400:09:44

SAFTEY FIRST! :)

Van life can be freeing, relaxing, and forever memorable but it doesn't come without risks.

Today we explore methods I've found - after two years on the road - effective in making you feel safe and comfortable as you travel America's highways and byways in your moveable home.

As always, we'll take lister questions - which include:

  • Just listened to the owl episode - how many owls live in one burrow?
  • Do you ever get anxious on the road?
  • What did you go to school for?
  • What do you spend on gas?
  • Did you leave anything else in The Fiary Door?

Through The Fairy Door - A Portal in Minnesota03 Jul 202400:21:34

Just north of Minneapolis, Minnesota lies a well-kept wooden door at the base of a large tree.

Those passing by leave notes, sweets and various presents as offerings.

For what - or rather, for who - is an interesting story.

A tale of magic, tradition and culture that transcends living memory.

Join us as we travel THROUGH THE FAIRY DOOR!

Secrets of the Civil War (Part 3)19 Jun 202400:34:15

Robert E Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia press onwards …   Marching confidently into Southern Pennsylvania after a string of Confederate  victories.

Talk of independence circulates among the southern troops … a shared belief solidifies - this march north will solidify Southern independence.

Meanwhile, Northern hopes to preserve the union remain dangerously low and leadership of the army of the Potomac changes just THREE days before one of the largest and most consequential battle in American history.

The Battle of Gettysburg is here …

What then, will be the experiences and ultimate fate of Confederate Colonel William Oats and Union Lieutenant Frank Haskell?

Van Life Diaries - Top 5 Taprooms Everyone Should Visit13 Jun 202400:15:38

Throughout my travels I’ve interviewed over 100 taprooms across the nation.

With that said, I want to share my personal TOP 5 TAPROOMS along with what makes each of them so special.

Here’s the criteria :

  • They have to make beer
  • You have to be able to drink at location
  • And - most importantly - the people have to be nice.

I also consider location, community, story, aesthetic and of course - the beer.

Listener question today include:

  • How was Bok able to afford "The Singing Tower"?

  • Why was General Lee so revered?

  • Can you see the bells inside the tower?

  • Where are you going next?

The Singing Tower - The Largest Instrument You Ever Did See12 Jun 202400:15:59

A symphony of bells play hypnotic melodies …

Harmonies and compositions sound out daily in the small town of Lake Wales in Central Florida.

The peculiar source of the music - a grandiose marble-lined pillar affectionately named ‘ The Singing Tower” - is as wonderful as it is unexpected.

The story behind it’s construction, however, is yet more interesting…

Van Life Diaries - "Real" Van Life06 Jun 202400:06:58

Not everyday is perfect when you live in a van ...

You’ve likely run into the classic “coffee-pour” video made by people living in vans - stepping out to unveil STUNNING locations as they open the doors of their van.

This is  - to put it lightly - not always the case.

Here are the  top three things I've found to NOT be STUNNING while living in a van.

I love living in a van, but it’s important to be real about what the experience entails. :)

With that said - let's grab a drink and chat!

Listener questions today include:

  • What’s so special about Gettysburg?

  • What’s your favorite state?

  • If you could recommend just one series to first get into the civil war what would it be?

  • Can you show us the van renovation soon?

Secrets of the Civil War (Part 1)29 May 202400:23:46

No single account of the Civil War can adequately tell the entire story; its causes, challenges, and societal impact are - to put it mildly - complicated.

However, firsthand narratives of the war's great battles, daily struggles and accompanying frustrations provide a snapshot - a partial lens from which we can attempt to better understand the entire picture.

In this three part series, we explore the life and writings of Northern Lieutenant Frank Haskell and Confederate Colonel William Oats.

We’ll use their lives to better understand the causes of the civil war, the experience had by common soldiers during it and explore personal accounts at the battle of Gettysburg.

Lucy the Elephant - America's Oldest Roadside Attraction22 May 202400:18:22

Lucy the Elephant has loomed over the Jersey shoreline since 1881…

This 65 foot behemoth Elephant-shaped structure consists of nearly one million pieces of wood, 22 windows and is deceptively large inside.

After entering up a spiral staircase on either back leg, you’re greeted by a vast inner chamber accentuated by two round windows overlooking the crashing Atlantic sea.

After climbing yet another staircase to visit the covered patio atop Lucy’s back, which overlooks Margate, Atlanta City and the ocean, one begins to wonder …

Who built this and perhaps more curiously … why was Lucy built in the first place?

Explore the studio in my van!

Today we’ll go over the trials, tribulations and joys that come with hosting a podcast from my van.

We will describe my setup, share stories, and explain why I would change a thing.

As always, we'll answer listener questions - which include:

  • Is Marco Island the best place to find Florida Burrowing Owls?
  • Do you prefer darker stories like Salem and The Donner Party over lighter ones?
  • Do you and Noodles ever have to get towed?
  • Just listened to the Jesse James episode, you mentioned that the house felt more like a museum, does that downplay the historical significance in your mind?
  • Will you ever do longer series?
  • Did you enjoy visiting Donner Lake?

Van Life Diaries - 5 Roadtrip Audiobook Recommendations09 May 202400:12:41

 DON'T CRUSH PEOPLE WITH ROCKS!!

Also,

I share my top 5 picks for the best audiobooks to listen to while driving.

We’ll also take listener questions at the end - including:

  • Would you recommend going to Danvers instead of Salem?

  • Do you think something like the witch trials could happen today?

  • Can you do an episode on your van?

  • What’s the legacy of Salem today?

The Real Salem - The Road to the Trials (Part 2)08 May 202400:17:00

The thrilling conclusion to the Salem Witch Trials is explored...

At the location where the first accusations of witchcraft were made, Noodles and I tackle popular theories, forgotten history and overlooked locations.

Although,  it’s temping to attribute one cause to the Salam Witch trials - the reality and it’s implications are much more complex.

What happened in Salem Village in 1692 is both strange and familiar, ridiculous and understandable, outlandish and conventional.

More than anything - the story of the trials, with its showings of fear, courage, cruelty, unpredictability, -  showcase the deepest parts of human nature in us all.

Here are our TOP THREE picks for beautiful - relatively short - roads everyone should experience at least once in their life.

Remember, the best way to get to where you're going is often WELL out of your way.

Here's to traveling Americas most beautiful winding roads and scenic byways!

As always, we’ll also take listener questions at the end - questions include:

Did Thoreau eve marry?

What has been your favorite meal on the road?

Have you ever thought about quitting van life?

The Real Salem - Road to the Trials (Part 1)30 Apr 202400:14:38

Ever want to visit the real Salem?

Join Noodles and I as we visit the location responsible for the start of the infamous witch trials.

----

A small shop is filled to the brim with sage, tarot cards and spell books.

Thick incense obscures eager shoppers and visiting tourists.

In the bustle, a  small book captures your attention

“The Witches - Salem, 1692”

The story contained within its pages begins NOT in the bustling modern town of Salem with its shops and attractions, but miles inland in the small house of a pastor.

The first accusations of witchcraft are made inside its walls, stoking the fire of communal hysteria, religious zealotry and and ultimately the conviction and execution of 20 individuals.

We visit the dark stone foundation far from the attractions of Salem.

Van Life Diaries - A Letter To Wandering Minds25 Apr 202400:09:50

We discuss my struggle with ADD.

I don’t share this story lightly - in fact it’s incredibly hard for me - but I hope that, if you’re listening and can relate, you'll benefit.

We’ll also take listener questions - including:

  • Did the Healing Springs water actually taste good?
  • What's your studio setup?
  • Do you have nicknames for Noodles?

Grab a drink and let's hang out!

The Legend of the Healing Springs - God's Water (Legally Speaking)23 Apr 202400:05:56

Battles rage throughout the 13 American Colonies …

In rural South Carolina - on what is now called Slaughter Field - two British soldiers lie dying from their wounds.

Death is but a certainty …

Ancestors of the Wassamasaw Tribe carry the soldiers to a spring known for it's healing properties.

6 months pass, the soldiers - assumed dead - walk back into the barracks in perfect health.

How?

Noodles and I visit the springs to find out.

Van Life Diaries - How to Find Fascinating Locations18 Apr 202400:09:52

Today we’ll be discussing three methods I use to find offbeat locations.

No edits. No Script.

We’ll  take listener questions at the end…

p.s.

For whatever reason, I’ve never been interested in what’s the popular thing to do - it might be the crowds, the conformity of it all or just a general lack of interest…

But because of this, I’ve always searched for what’s off the beaten path - particularly when it comes to traveling.

Over the years I’ve narrowed down my approach to three methods that are effective in finding interesting locations that people might not actively seek out…

The Donner Party - One Wrong Turn (Part 2)16 Apr 202400:13:37

The Donner Party gaze upon a path whose crossing grows less likely with each passing day.

Death by cold or slow starvation is now - very much - a looming reality.

Less than three miles from the summit, two frightening options become apparent:

  • Abandon your remaining supplies and brave the grueling 10 day snow-laden trek across the mountains…

OR

  • Choose to retreat and wait out for a clearing in the weather.

Neither, encourage optimism.

Van Life Diaries - Loneliness on the Road12 Apr 202400:12:04

Feelings of loneliness can surface anywhere - especially when you’re on the road.

Is van life glorified on social media? What do you do when loneliness strikes? Have you ever seen a UFO?!

We discuss all of this and more as we unpack what it means to feel lonely while living full time in a van.

No script. No edits.

Grab a drink and let’s hang out..

The Donner Party - One Wrong Turn (Part 1)10 Apr 202400:13:02

Hundreds of thousands traveled the roughly 2,500 miles from Missouri to the pacific coast - chasing fertile soil, better fortune and predictable climate.

Among the thousands to have made this difficult journey westwards, no single group has garnered as much attention, or endured so much, as the roughly 87 people now referred to as the Donner Party …

Upon reaching their destination, 47 of the 87 remain… what happened?

Van Life Diaries - Why I Do This29 Mar 202400:13:30

No edits. No script.

In "Van Life Diaries", we  discuss experiences on the road, pull clips from previous episodes, talk  struggles, successes and everything in between.

At each conclusion, I answer questions from listeners. Life questions, van questions, nothing is off limits.

I’m going to grab a drink, if you’re in a position to as well grab a cold one and let’s hang out..

The Mystery Of The Lone Toilet - California's Roadside Curiosity29 Mar 202400:07:25

A water-logged marsh along highway 37, just west of Vallejo, California contains an object that perplexes, repulses and fascinates passing travelers.

How did this get here? The answer might surprise you.

This is the story of The Lone Toilet.

The Murder of Jesse James - The Room Where It Happened27 Mar 202400:14:43

Something sinister happened behind these walls ...

I walk past the green shutters and elongated windows of the Jesse James house…

If not for the eerie feeling you get when approaching the entrance… it's beautiful.

I grasp the handle and open the time tested door.

Jesse James survives shootouts, bullet wounds and the ravages of they American Civil War… but his murder, and the shadowy series of events leading to a gun aimed at the back of his exposed head at his home in St. Joseph Missouri, that’s a story worth telling.

Walden (Part 3) - After the Pond29 Aug 202400:21:23

We’ve explored the reasons behind Thoreau’s decision to leave for Walden Pond,  examined the seasons he spent along it’s shore ... and NOW must acknowledge one -  unavoidable - fact:

Thoreau chooses to leave the pond …

Why?

The Time We Keep - Clockmakers Reject Henry Ford27 Mar 202400:12:11

A vast collection of hand - carved, impossibly detailed, seemingly priceless wooden clocks rest around you.

Never sold or bought, you are told … only collected. Some of them feet taller than yourself.

One question plagues your mind as you observe the intricate patterns carved into the wood.

How did these get here?

Van Life Diaries - The 80/20 Rule of Van Life27 Aug 202400:12:49

Throughout my over TWO years on the road, I’ve had many ups, many downs and everything in between…

Every experience has led me to embrace one - inescapable reality of Van Life:

80 percent of your time on the road will not resemble the curated photos and videos circulating online.

You’ll instead explore the parking lots, rest stops and Cracker Barrels of the Nation … BUT!

It’s this “less-than-ideal” time that makes remaining the views, hikes and experiences worth the effort.

Today we talk about this appropriately named “80/20 rule of Van Life”, and share three stories on the road that support this rule.

As always, we’ll also take listener questions at the end, which include:

 - How often to do drive to different cities?

- Would you consider Thoreau a philosopher?

- What takes the longest to do when making an episode?

- What's your favorite state?

- What makes Thoreau looking into?

Walden (Part 2) - At the Pond15 Aug 202400:31:02

Two years. Two months. Two days.

This is the time spent by David Henry Thoreau along the shores of Walden Pond.

We now look into his self-proclaimed “experiment in living simply” and ask ourselves two short questions:

What exactly did Thoreau do during this time? And maybe more importantly, what did he hope to accomplish while residing at his fabled secluded cabin in the woods?

Van Life Diaries - On Location Recordings - Behind the Scenes01 Aug 202400:13:10

Today we listen to untouched "on location" recordings.

We break down everything that goes into recording (sometimes re-recording), editing,  and reflecting upon each documentation that later is featured in episodes of Backroad Odyssey.

As always, we’ll also take listener questions at the end, which include:

  • Do you have any Stories from the road that you’ll remember?
  • Do you think you would have been friends with Walden?
  • What do you do when you get stuck on the road?
  • Do you believe in fairies?

Matȟó Thípila (Devils Tower) - A Skyscraper on the Prairie31 Jul 202400:19:55

Rising out of a relatively flat sea of prairie in North East Wyoming, "Devils Tower" - is - to put it lightly - undeniably unique.

Noodles and I explore its peculiar plentitude of pillar-like features which baffle geologists attempting to decipher The Towers exact origins.

The site remains significant in stories and spiritual traditions of the Crow, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Kiowa, Lakota and other plains tribes…
