Kitchari or Kichadi, is one of the classic Ayurveda dishes. Eaten for comfort, cleansing, nourishment and just because it tastes good, adding this staple to your diet will go a long way to healing your body.
In this episode I share the many benefits of Kitchari and tips on how to prepare it for each dosha and imbalances.
Tri-doshic Kitchari Recipe:
Ingredients:
½ cup white basmati rice
1 cup split yellow mung dal beans
1 T fresh ginger root
1 tsp each turmeric, coriander, cumin powder
1 tsp cumin seeds, brown or yellow mustard seeds
1 pinch asafoetida
8 cups water
1 cup Seasonal Vegetables: green beans, broccoli, carrots, peas etc.
1 tsp himalayan rock salt
1 small handful fresh chopped cilantro leaves
1-2 tsp ghee
Directions:
Wash split yellow mung beans and rice together until water runs clear
Heat a large pot on medium heat and add ghee. Once hot, add ginger root, turmeric, coriander powder, whole cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and hing. Stir together for a few minutes. Be careful to avoid burning.
Add mung dal and rice and stir again to cover with spices.
Add water and bring to a boil. Boil for 10 minutes.
Turn heat to low, cover pot. Cook until dal and rice are soft and water is mostly absorbed (about 30 minutes)
Add vegetables and cook for 10 minutes more.
Add cilantro leaves and salt.

Golden Milk Recipe
Ingredients
1 ½ Cup Milk-organic, raw if desired (almond milk is a good nut milk alternative)
2 tsp spice mix
1 tsp ghee
Honey or maple syrup (based on your dosha)
Spice Mix:
¼ cup Turmeric
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger powder
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp cardamom
Blend and store in a glass airtight container
Preparation:
Bring milk to a low boil. Turn heat off and add 2 tsp spice mix while stirring gently. Once milk has cooled a bit, add desired sweetener to taste and a tsp of ghee.
*If using honey, never add honey while milk is still hot. Cooked honey denatures and turns into an ama-causing substance. Honey should always be raw and only added into food or drinks that are warm, not hot. Always measure ghee and honey to be equal in weight.
Vata Tonic Recipe
Drink this throughout the day to balance excess air and movement in the body and mind. Perfect during the winter months to help keep you balanced and focused and anytime you feel excessive anxiety, worry, movement or just need to hydrate.
The Vata Tonic has the three flavors that help pacify vata: sweet, sour, salty.
Ingredients:
Quart jar of warm water
½ tsp Himalayan sea salt
Half a lemon juiced
1-2 T pure organic maple syrup
Mix in the jar and enjoy!

What foods we eat together can have a dramatic impact on how our body digests the foods and how we feel after eating. But let’s not overcomplicate things. Start with one habit to shift and work from there. In this episode I cover the 8 factors that Affect Food Quality, why it’s important to create a Sadhana (sacred) meal experience, and dive deep into proper Samyoga (Food Combining).
The basic guidelines for Food Combining:
Fruit eaten Alone
Milk eaten Alone is best (warmed is even better)
Milk should not be combined with yogurt, sour fruits, meat, fish or eggs.
Do not combine 2 proteins at the same meal.
Do not combine a high protein food with a heavy carb. (ie steak and potatoes)
Eggs are best eaten with vegetables. Do not combine eggs with milk, cheese, yogurt, beans, potatoes, meat or fish.
Nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers etc) do not combine with cheese. (this means pizza may cause digestive issues)
Raw and Cooked foods do not combine well.

Did you know that each dosha has 5 subdoshas? In this episode we become specialized in healing kapha dosha, and just in time for the spring season congestion, allergies, lethargy and extra weight.
By identifying each subdosha of Kapha:
Kledaka
Avalambaka
Bodhaka
Sleshaka
Tarpaka
And their associated symptoms, we can become our own healers. In a nutshell to heal the subdoshas do the following:
Kledaka- adjust diet and herbs to dry, light and warm foods focused on the tastes of bitter, astringent, pungent. Add spices to your meals to increase the heat. Only eat when hungry leaving plenty of time between meals to digest food.
Avalambaka- Let it go! Clear out unnecessary possessions and create space. Practice not attaching-time to spring clean your physical space and your emotions.
Bodhaka- Same treatment as Kledaka.
Sleshaka- for stiff joints add in movement and stretching. for swollen joints use rest, heat and herbs.
Tarpaka- Avoid excessive sleep. Stimulate the senses through time in nature, vigorous music and movement, uplifting smells.
Listen in to hear the symptoms of imbalance in each subdosha and you will be on your way to strengthening your own divine intuition to heal your imbalanced kapha.
If you are naturally kapha dosha in your constitution, you will be more likely to go out of balance during spring (kapha) season. But all doshas can become out of balance with too much kapha this time of year, so all can benefit from this knowledge.

Prajnaparadha: Doing what we know we should not is a core cause of disease and suffering. Our intellect wants to do what is best for us, but is given conflicting information from our senses/ego and the soul.
It can be difficult to hear the voice of the soul, but when we can overcome the ego's loud shouts and hear the whisper of soul wisdom, we will find our way to balance.
Ways to heal/Journaling Questions:
1. Pay attention to when you feel well to contrast with when you start to notice small imbalances. Keep a record of these.
2. Be kind and learn to forgive yourself for not always making the best choices. Take accountability for your choices and see the impact they are having on your life.
3. Take inventory of your habits and behaviors the detract from your good and happy life.
4. Choose one habit to change. Pause before making a decision in that area and ask yourself: Will this decision take me closer to or further from my life's purpose or goals?
5. Respect your intuition and follow the voice of the soul, not matter how small the prompting.
