Kim Allen, Co-Owner & Founder of CRA Construction and 2023 Award Winner 23 Jan 202400:21:28

Kim owns CRA Construction alongside her husband Chris, a residential high end plastering company. Together they've built up a team of full time employed, qualified, going above and beyond the national standard to complete superior finishes.

Kim flew up and joined the AWIC North Queensland Roadshow (16th – 24th October 2023) in Cairns. It was great having Kim join us as we visited a wide range of industry businesses. We took Kim aside for a few minutes to find our why she joined us in Cairns.

Kim is incredibly proud in having created a company with her husband where they have chosen to simply do things right. They only hire their staff on a full-time basis instead of running with sole-traders, they only hire qualified plasterers or up-skill them to get them qualified and are constantly working with their team to better themselves personally but also keeping their passion alight as tradespeople.

Resilient Women in Construction – Mental Health in the Workplace | Queensland Mental Health Week - Full Zoom Event20 Oct 202003:38:18

In October we were joined by a number of speakers and interviewees to discuss mental health in the workplace.

The construction industry is notoriously male-dominated, and the many capable women who enter the construction industry often

have to fight harder, speak louder and face extraordinary pressure to create their own success.

Event attendees will be provided with the tools to achieve personal resilience which will make the difference between “just coping” and thriving under pressure in the workplace. The guest speakers joining us for this event are all experts in their field and look forward to sharing their knowledge too small to medium sized business owners, women in construction and aboriginal & islander communities who simply feel they don’t ‘fit’ anywhere.

This event was proudly supported by Queensland Alliance for Mental Health, in partnership with Queensland Mental Health Commission.

Melissa Ayre – CEO, Roycorp Pty Ltd22 Sep 202000:32:12

When I finished high school, I dived into a combined business and law degree. I always wanted to study business and I decided to do the law course as I got the results to do law as well. University was a hard slog and I worked in a small law firm during my university years to get experience. In fact, sometimes I worked up to three jobs to get through university.

I fully intended on having a great career and then throwing it in the bin once I had children. When I was in my twenties, I couldn’t fathom how you could be successful in your career and still be a mother. In hindsight, that willingness to let my career go, was one of the best decisions that I could have ever made.

The night before the podcast, my eight year old son wanted me to tell him a story before bed. I told him that I needed to prepare for a podcast that I was doing tomorrow. I had to explain what a podcast was and told him that I would talk about my career. He said “like North Korea!”? I love the minds of children!

Website | LinkedIn | Facebook

Talking to Melissa on this Podcast we discussed how along our career we take with us the learnings of each employer to the next position. Not just in our careers, but in life. Appreciate the small things because one day, they will become the things that matter.

Stacey Head - she wear Founder22 Sep 202000:31:33

she wear was established in 2013 after an unfortunate nail-through-the-foot accident. Our Founder, Stacey, searched far and wide for comfortable, stylish women’s work boots. Astounded at only finding “unisex” options that were heavy, ill fitting, and just plain boring, she set out to develop a range of safety work boots designed specifically for women.

After much research and development, due diligence, planning, prototype building, laboratory testing (and lack of sleep!) she wear’s first range of safety work boots designed and styled for women, along with a range of other matching workwear accessories, was launched in October 2013.

Fast forward to 2020 and we’ve taken that same all day comfort & support and re-engineered into every day work and fashion footwear.

Ang Hucker | Empowering People in Construction04 Aug 202300:19:48

Angela is CEO and Founder of EPIC and is a highly experienced professional with a diverse background in the construction industry spanning over 20 years. Her journey began at a young age, working on her father's turf farm and later joining his landscaping business during her high school years. After finishing high school, she then moved into a role that saw her managing a chain of locksmiths stores across Brisbane, where she was only one of 2 females in Qld trained in complex locksmithing systems.

One of Angela's notable achievements was her first project, overseeing the construction of a Peppers Resort, a comprehensive project comprising 132 units, a hotel and restaurant, retail outlets, day spa, and function and conference centre. She played a pivotal role in the project, working diligently from pre-construction to operational phases.

Throughout her career, Angela has amassed a wealth of expertise across various sectors within the construction industry. She has successfully contributed to projects in fields such as oil and gas, undersea electricity interconnectors, civil engineering, renewables, power generation, water management, commercial construction, government initiatives, forestry, tourism and marketing, and major international construction projects in Dubai, the Middle East, Singapore, Pakistan, New Zealand, and India.

Angela's exceptional work on Australia's multi-billion-dollar mega-projects even garnered attention from the US TV show "Mega Structures," for the APLNG Project at Curtis Island. Her experience as a FIFO (Fly-In-Fly-Out) worker in remote locations across Australia has given her firsthand exposure to the challenges faced by women in the industry, including sexual harassment, bullying, intimidation, discrimination, and threatening behaviour and her own personal experiences were the driving force why she founded EPIC, as she recognised there were no specialised services available to support women in the construction industry.

In addition to her construction expertise, Angela also serves as a Probity Advisor for the Tasmanian Government, ensuring ethical conduct in procurement processes, and holds the position of Tribunal Member (Disciplinary Tribunal) for the Department of Justice in Tasmania. She is also a White Ribbon Australia Community Partner and Mentor for Be Hers, a community organisation who supports vulnerable CALD women.

Naomi Cassimatis – Qualified Carpenter01 Sep 202000:27:54

Throughout high school I did all the manual arts classes I could as I enjoyed it and was good at it, it also boosted my confidence as I didn’t do so well at Home Economics.

But my first real glimpse into a future in construction, was as I grew up. My Mother worked in a quarry driving frontend loaders and soil testing showing me anything was possible.

After my pre-apprenticeship course (which I aced) I still didn’t have an apprenticeship to roll into when all the guys had multiple option before finishing their pre-apprenticeship course. This was the first major hurdle I face in the industry, no one willing to hire an adult female apprentice.

I made many calls, sent in many applications, and even offered a day’s free labour just to get a foot in the door, then finally was offered two apprenticeships on the same day within an hour of each other. I chose to go with Q-Build and guarantee my 4 years.

Since completing my apprenticeship, I have worked in a variety of roles where I have learnt a variety of skills along the way.

Cascie Kambouris, Founder of The Hope Initiative20 Jul 202000:21:56

‘I know. I have been there. I have had to make some hard choices.  And with each hard choice came consequences.

It is these choices that I don’t want anyone else in a vulnerable position to have to make and I know you don’t either –a mother shouldn’t have to choose to buy a loaf of bread or sanitary products for her daughter, to feed many hungry mouths or a roof over their head.

This is where The Hope Initiative fits in. If you and The Hope Initiative can take one thing out of their equation so that the person in need has one less choice to make, then we have helped.

Each bracelet represents humanity.  It is designed to inspire you to continually do good for humanity, the very reason we are here.  The quotes are powerful reminders to keep going, you can do this, we all have bad days and need a little help just like those vulnerable in our society.

I have hit rock bottom, several times and never want to experience it again. The Hope Initiative is something big for me.  It puts a jump in my step, and I want that for you too.  I want you to feel you are making a difference by reducing the number of hard choices in the life of someone in need’.

Hope Initiative is a beacon of light for those in need, and the inspiration for those that can help and make a difference.

Natasha Sharp – Sister to Brian Ross, who lives at the Youngcare Wooloowin share house20 Jul 202000:38:45

Brian Ross had the world at his feet, travelling and working overseas before returning home to Canberra to be with his close-knit family. Like any young man, Brian wanted a life of independence and adventure and qualified as a Marine Technician in the Royal Australian Navy. He loved the navy life – the mateship and travel, and was excited to be deployed to Iraq.

On the way home from serving his country in Iraq, 23-year-old Naval seaman Brian Ross’ life changed forever. An accident caused a severe brain injury, leaving Brian unable to walk or talk, and for the next 11 years he was forced to live in a long-term rehabilitation facility.

“We knew this wasn’t the right place for Brian but there was no alternative. Youngcare is changing that. Brian was able to move into the Youngcare Share House which has taken a weight off the family’s shoulders, knowing he is being cared for, but is also living how he wants to in his own home. Without the generosity of the individuals who support Youngcare, Brian would not be living the young life he deserves,” Brian’s sister, Tash Sharp

Karen Lindsay, Aussie Female Farmer & founder of Little White Goat Cheese29 Jun 202000:23:03

After being a school teacher for 13 years, Karen decided it was time to try her hand at farming and hasn’t looked back.

Karen Lindsay has created a world first freeze-dried goat feta! What’s better, is that you can keep in your pantry 365 days a year.

I LOVE GOAT CHEESE!!!!!!!

I am following my dream of creating beautiful cheeses for everyone to eat and enjoy!!!

Karen loves all her goats dearly – ‘My girls are adored, cuddled and given the best of care. In return they provide me with the most beautiful milk -which is turned into this fabulous product’. Milking them, processing, packing & delivering her frieze dried feta. Not to be out done, she also sells her fresh feta to many of Brisbane’s finest restaurants.

Reasons to switch to freeze dried fetta….

  • 100% Australian Made Hand made by an Aussie Female Farmer
  • 100% natural, under 5 natural ingredients
  • Locked in nutrition- freeze drying locks in all the nutrients of the fresh feta
  • No chill - lives happily in your pantry for 18 months
  • No spoilage - just reseal the bag and it keeps fresh and delicious
  • It is very rich in flavour- tastes even better than fresh!

Tricia Pilgrim, Estimator, Small Business Owner and Girl Guide Leader29 Jun 202000:37:33

Tricia started her career as a carpenter, working "on the tools". It was never planned, she kind of fell into it and ended working for her parents residential building business for 8 years. During that time, she completed her carpentry apprenticeship, got married, got pregnant, bought a renovator’s delight and moved into more of the sales and estimating side of the business. During this time, Tricia also decided to start volunteering as a leader of youth with Girl Guides.

During her now 10 years in Brisbane, she has worked for several companies, her husband and her have almost finished renovating their delight and they (her husband and her) have decided to get into house flipping. They are currently getting ready to start their second house.

‘Bringing houses back to life’ requires the purchase of old Queenslanders in Ipswich, renovating and extending them, turning them back into lovely and larger family homes. Their flipping business is great as it keeps them busy and out of trouble. Tricia also likes flipping houses as she gets to use and share her carpentry skills and also is able to spend heaps of time with her best friend.
