Since 2018, there has been $160 billion in investment dollars linked to electric vehicles in North America, based on data from the Center for Automotive Research (2024 CAR Book of Deals). For EVs to reach their full potential, consumers must have complete faith and confidence in the charging infrastructure. Like how consumers think nothing of a gas pump when they pull up, building that same level of trust with charging stations is imperative.   

Elaina Farnsworth, co-founder and CEO of SkillFusion, joins Carl to discuss a significant (and perhaps overlooked) opportunity for skilled trade professionals as more EVs populate our roadways. Elaina and her team at SkillFusion are building the talent pipeline of certified electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) workers through its EVSE Diagnostic Technician (EDT) Program. This "Spillover Effect" creates unintended safety hazards for local communities that might not be involved in the decision-making process to raise the posted speed limit on a nearby highway.

While consumers may not understand all the jargon, quirks, and idiosyncrasies of the automotive industry, their interests are piqued once they have a basic definition of a connected car and its potential benefits. However, that interest only extends so far, as consumers view certain connected car features and capabilities as more valuable than others.  

This realization is among the key findings in a body of research from Salesforce in partnership with YouGov, released in January 2024, that surveyed nearly 2,200 U.S. drivers aged 18 and over.

Daily traffic volumes have rebounded from pandemic lows in 2020, but perhaps not surprisingly, traffic and pedestrian fatalities have risen in tandem. Maybe also not surprisingly, unsafe driving behaviors like speeding, texting, and operating under the influence continue to impact these statistics. Among the questions are why people engage in risky behaviors behind the wheel and what countermeasures can be implemented to prevent such behavior.   

These questions are at the core of the latest Traffic Safety Culture Index (TSCI) survey from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, released in December 2023. The latest TSCI survey identified six driver profiles and examined the social approval and/or disapproval of certain unsafe driving habits.

The Detroit Autonomous Vehicle Group, or DAVG for short, is an open community built around the development of miniaturized self-driving cars. If we had only a handful of words to define the trajectory of our lives, what words would we choose? Inspired by her parents, who immigrated to the United States, and her years as a mechanical engineer, Anne Partington, Managing Director of the Tauber Institute for Global Operations at the University of Michigan, encourages us to find those few special words that truly define us. 

With extensive automotive industry experience, Anne has held leadership roles in product development, program management, and global supply chain at General Motors and Stellantis where she led a $3.5 billion mechatronics global purchasing team. She has also led an automobility technology commercialization program at the University of Michigan. Anne holds a BSE in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan and an MSES in Management of Technology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The findings are published in the 2021 Traffic Safety Culture Index from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, released in December 2022. The average price paid for a new vehicle in the United States reached its highest in June 2022, according to Kelley Blue Book. Average transaction prices surpassed $48,000 for new vehicles, beating the previous high of $47,202 set in December 2021. The rising transaction prices also impacted hybrid and EV buyers.

Carl Anthony, Managing Editor of Automoblog and AutoVision News, examines the key data points and findings from Kelley Blue Book. He looks at things through an experiential marketing and economics lens, wondering if this will hurt how consumers view ADAS and if automakers run the risk of trying to over-monetize software-defined architectures. "On one hand, as someone who works in automotive, the data is fascinating as data like this often is," Anthony said. "However, as a consumer who sticks to a budget, it's a bit concerning, as we have been watching the average transaction price for new cars reach historic highs again and again since at least 2018."
