Peter Rutland has taught at Wesleyan since 1989. Before that he taught at the University of Texas at Austin, and at the University of York and London University in the UK. He has a BA from Oxford and a D. Phil from York. He has also been a visiting professor at Columbia University, and is an associate of the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University. His research interests focus on all things Russian and places where the Russian boot has trod (Nicholas II) in the former Soviet Union and the former East Europe. He started off studying workers and the Communist Party, moving on to broader questions of economic policy in the socialist and post-socialist economies. Along the way he developed an interest in nationalism and ethnic conflict. Since 2013 he has been editor in chief of Nationalities Papers, the journal of the Association for the Study of Nationalities along with serving as associate editor of Russian Review.
We discuss the image that Putin is creating of himself in Russia. His control of all media in Russia allows him to present whatever facet he likes to give the Russians the image of a 'humble man of the people', and his propaganda is framed in such a way to make him seem to be 'defending' Russia. We also look at how Trump has also adopted this strategy to present himself to US voters.

We discuss the political landscape in Texas. Ken Paxton is running for US Senate, to replace John Cornyn. Paxton is targeting Latino Democrats legally.
For the first time, Trump's approval rating on the economy is low in Texas. This appears to be due to tariffs and other price shocks. Infrastructure for any new manufacturing is being neglected.

We talk with Bill Curry and Jamie Rowen.
Bill Curry was a Connecticut state senator, comptroller and two time Democratic nominee for governor who served as Counselor to the President in the Clinton White House. He has written for Salon, the Daily Beast, the Huffington Post and the Hartford Courant and has provided commentary on National Public Radio, MSNBC and many other news outlets.
Dr. Rowen is an associate professor of Legal Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and the founding director of UMass' Center for Justice, Law, and Societies. Her work focuses on both domestic and international criminal law. Her book, Worthy of Justice: The Politics of Veterans Treatment Courts in Practice, is forthcoming with Stanford University Press in December 2025.
We discuss the corruption endemic to the US now with the Trump White House leading the way. NH has now adopted a crypto currency reserve into its budget, the first in the nation to do so, likely to be followed by other states.
Cuts to research projects under NIH and other agencies has created a pool of "Research refugees" who are leaving for other countries to continue their research. This will have dire consequences for US leadership in many technologies in future.

We discuss the many Jews that disapprove of the Israeli policy in Gaza. We also talk about how any criticism of Israel is being weaponized by the administration as 'antisemitism'.

Part 2:
We talk with Sam Whitehead, a correspondent for Kaiser Family Foundation Health News (KFF Health News). Bob covers the South from his base just outside Atlanta. He previously worked as a health care reporter for public radio station WABE, where he chronicled the covid-19 pandemic as host of the award-winning podcast Did You Wash Your Hands? Before that, he was a general assignment reporter and fill-in radio host at Georgia Public Broadcasting. He also co-founded a long-running nightly news program on WRFI Community Radio in Ithaca, New York. He is a graduate of Emory University.
We discuss how changes are being made to Medicaid, by the imposition of a work requirement for recipients. Its should be noted that most recipients are elderly or disabled, and are living in nursing homes. This change does not increase the number of people who get jobs. Instead, the number people who are covered is reduced. No savings are evident, because of the additional administrative costs.

She has been an Alicia Patterson fellow and a multiple-time grant recipient from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting. We discuss the push to drill and dig in the administration, when many of the minerals and metals we need are already available in the byproducts of existing mining an drilling, in addition to the resources available in discarded items. We talk about the amount of waste produced, and buried in land fills, when when it could be reprocessed and used.
Part 2:
We talk with Julie Su, a nationally recognized workers' rights and civil rights expert who served in President Biden's cabinet as the Acting Secretary of Labor where she successfully led efforts to build worker power and union strength, negotiate historic contracts, and expand good jobs for all. Prior to her nomination as U.S. Labor Secretary, she served as the Deputy Secretary, and before that as the California Labor Secretary appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom. Secretary Su brought a wealth of experience as a nonprofit attorney representing low wage, vulnerable workers for nearly two decades prior to being appointed to government positions and as California Labor Commissioner from 2011-2018, where she was widely credited with a renaissance in enforcement and creative approaches to combating wage theft and protecting immigrant workers. Secretary Su graduated from Stanford University and Harvard Law School. She speaks Mandarin and Spanish.
We discuss the information skimming that the DOGE boys are doing. Different government agencies have data about US residents, most of it private. However DOGE is pushing for access to ALL data, by unauthorized individuals who are part of DOGE, with no controls or oversight. This data can be used in many ways to exploit in many ways detrimental to us.

We discuss how the administration has been treating people imprisoned because of immigration policies, and because of thought crimes that are critical of Trump. Specifically, we discuss the case of Mahmoud Khalil, a legal immigrant and graduate student, who has been held in Louisiana since his kidnapping by ICE. We discuss the prison, which is private, and its conditions. We also discuss the environment there and the local economy's dependence on this private prison. The prisoners there have not been convicted of any crimes.

We discuss antisemitism in higher education in the US. This is being used by the Trump administration to punish universities, particularly the more prestigious universities for not having more stringent rules about antisemitism for their employees and students. However, according to surveys and interviews, rabbis and antisemitism activists do not agree what constitutes antisemitism, and whether Trump's approach is correct. Withdrawing funds from schools hurts ALL students, including Jewish students.
Part 2:
We talk with John Nichols, who is a national affairs correspondent for The Nation. He has written, cowritten, or edited over a dozen books on topics ranging from histories of American socialism and the Democratic Party to analyses of US and global media systems. His latest, cowritten with Senator Bernie Sanders, is the New York Times bestseller “It's OK to Be Angry About Capitalism.”
We discuss, in detail the recent arrest of Milwaukee judge Dugan in her courtroom on what appear to be specious charges. Trump is at was with the judiciary, and this appears to be an intimidation tactic. This is likely to have an chilling effect on the rule of law in the US. Sympathy is currently with the judge.

We discuss the state of Texas' prisons. There have been many heat deaths (41 in 2024). The Texas legislature has decided that there should be air conditioning in prisons by 2032. Effect, people who go to prison in Texas risk death, even for non-capital crimes.
Texas is planning to study the deleterious effects of immigration in Texas, without looking at the benefits.
The governor had decided to create a Texas version of DOGE. It should be pointed out that the Republicans have dominated Texas for the past 30 years. All blame for 'waste' should therefore rest on them. There will be at least 18 full time staff members on the Texas DOGE.
Ted Cruz has debuted on Texas air waves as a talk show host, as a sitting Senator.

There have been massive layoffs of park rangers, and funding for parks has decreased. This is having an economic impact. Mining rights are being considered. The parks had a gain of $30 B in 2024, at a cost of $5 B.

Last week, Harvard University started fighting back against Trump. In this episode of #RaceClass, Jon and Arnie discuss why immediate praise for Harvard is premature. To deserve our praise, Harvard needs to do more than defend itself. It needs to leverage its near $60 billion endowment to defend all universities against unlawful federal interference. Harvard need
 not do it alone. Following the lead of thousands of university professors across the country, Harvard should create a mutual defense pact that unites all of our campuses to protect our fundamental right to free and open inquiry free from intimidation, harassment or discipline. Moreover, Harvard needs to practice what it preaches and cultivate free and open inquiry on its campus. A start would include revising its anti-harassment policies by rejecting the IHRA definition of antisemitism and clarifying that speech criticizing Israel, Zionism or antizionism is legitimate discourse that does not itself constitute antisemitism.

We talk with Linggong Kong, aa Ph.D. candidate in Political Science at Auburn University. My research focuses on international relations, including U.S.-China relations, China's grand strategy, and Northeast Asian security, as well as comparative politics, with a particular emphasis on political culture.
We discuss the tariffs being imposed on Chines goods, and how this is likely to be perceived by the Chines government. The Chinese economy has been weakened, and now Trump may be perceived as the cause, thus helping the Chinese government shift blame, if any, on him. Weaknesses in the China are due to to export orientation, depopulation, the influence of Russia. However, China has many advantages that it can use to counter the problems. We discuss these advantages and opportunities that can help China "win" this trade war.

Part 2:
We talk with Chris Lehmann, who is the DC Bureau chief for The Nation and a contributing editor at The Baffler. He was formerly editor of The Baffler and The New Republic, and is the author, most recently, of The Money Cult: Capitalism, Christianity, and the Unmaking of the American Dream(Melville House, 2016).
We discuss the pattern of the Trump administration of RENDITION, as opposed to deportation. Americans should be worried, because the pattern seems to be to simply kidnap people from their lives, and WITHOUT DUE PROCESS, or any evidence of wrong-doing, send them to another country, such as El Salvador. Trump has already raised the idea of doing this to American citizens.

We discuss the effect of discouraging students from around the world from coming the the US for education. Education is our 10th largest export, and it contributes billions of dollars in both direct payments (tuition, rents, etc.) and also as multiplied by creating and supporting jobs in the US.
The administration is targeting foreign students, by taking actions against them, by either cancelling visas, and deporting many students. This discourages potential students from coming. Additionally, the 'brain drain' thus caused will stifle much development and invention activity. Faculty will likely also choose to go to 'friendlier' countries to work. Colleges and universities, who are subsidized by international students who pay 'full freight' will lose revenues, and will likely have to close. Nationally, $2.3 Billion is the estimated annual revenue contribution.

Part 2:
We talk with Lori Wallach, Director, Rethink Trade Program at the American Economic Liberties Project.

We discuss how tariffs should work to aid a real economic plan. We discuss the role of targeted tariffs, and paired with investments in-country in economic development in the country, along with the economic advantages to workers as a result. Inbalances in trade can be resolved, but they must be more than a "beggar thy neighbor" policies, which do not work. Instead, we discuss how the US should approach trade with other countries, and develop resilience in its supply chains.
