Radical Acceptance | Lab25 Nov 202400:08:36

Welcome to the Radical Acceptance Lab, a unique series created by Attention Different for those navigating ADHD and looking to transform shame into self-compassion. 💡

In this lab, we dive deep into the concept of radical acceptance—a powerful tool for recognizing our unique strengths and moving beyond the cycle of self-criticism. Through honest discussions, personal stories, and insights from ADHD advocates, we explore what it means to embrace our brains as they are, without needing to “fix” or change ourselves to meet unrealistic expectations. Radical acceptance helps us see that ADHD is not separate from us; it’s part of our identity that enriches our lives and the world around us.

We’ll also cover:

The destructive nature of the shame spiral and how to recognize it
Breaking free from perfectionism and self-punishment
Why acceptance is the first step toward real change
Learning to embrace ADHD as part of who we are, and finding gratitude along the way

Radical acceptance doesn’t mean liking every challenge ADHD brings—it’s about holding space for all parts of our reality, especially the messy ones. Join us as we uncover how to move forward with self-compassion, strength, and community.

ADHD Adult Symptoms | Lab25 Nov 202400:09:10

Attention Different Labs are short form episodes centered around important adulting with ADHD topics. Stephen dives into specific research mixed with tangible coaching strategies and advice, delivered with a side of relatability and humor.

In this lab, we discuss and educate on Adult ADHD Symptoms.

Our mission is to reclaim the label, not reinvent it, in order to understand our condition in more accurate and self-affirming ways. Labels can be stigmatizing, leading to shame, guilt, and despair. We believe that “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder" (ADHD), while a very real condition, has a tired and overly negative label.

ADHD: A Legacy of Our Hunter-Gatherer Ancestors?01 Aug 201901:23:59

In this episode of "Attention Different," the hosts discuss the hunter-gatherer hypothesis and its connection to ADHD. They explore how ADHD traits may have evolved as adaptive features beneficial in early human societies, challenging the view that ADHD is purely a negative, maladaptive condition. The conversation delves into the genetics of ADHD, the impact of environmental stressors on its expression, and the role of neuroplasticity and epigenetics in shaping behavior. The episode emphasizes that ADHD should be seen as a feature of human evolution, offering unique strengths, rather than as a disorder to be "fixed."

Grace Over Guilt: An Interview with Steev Hodgson30 May 202500:53:55

Ever feel like you're constantly hitting invisible walls? From job after job where you perform brilliantly until something goes sideways, to lying awake at night unable to turn your brain off, living with undiagnosed ADHD can be intense. Add parenthood to the mix and that "popcorn machine" in your head can finally overflow.

In this deeply personal and practical episode, we sit down with Steev Hodgson, ADHD Life Coach and founder of Damn Healthy Dose, who didn't get his diagnosis until his late 40s during the pandemic. From his breakthrough moment reading ADHD 2.0 to developing tools that help him navigate everything from bike repairs to sensory overwhelm, Steev shares how radical self-acceptance became the foundation for managing his ADHD.

Join us as we explore:

🍿 How parenthood can push ADHD symptoms past the breaking point—and why that could be the wake-up call you need

🚴 The STEER Map technique: moving from reactive frustration to intentional problem-solving (featuring an epic bike tire disaster)

🌊 The SURF method for emotional regulation: stopping the spiral before it takes you under

🎯 Why "intention is the precursor to attention"

🏥 The difference between "I have ADHD" and "I am ADHD"—and why that shift changes everything

✨ How to find your "damn healthy dose" of the qualities others see as flaws

If you've spent years wondering why you keep hitting those same walls despite your best efforts, this episode offers both validation and practical tools for moving forward. Steev's journey proves that getting diagnosed later in life isn't a disadvantage—it's an opportunity to finally understand yourself and build a life that actually works with your wiring, not against it.

How to Fail Forward with ADHD26 Sep 201701:01:18

To succeed we must first learn how to fail. Anyone of significance, from famous people to business moguls, has strung together a long string of failures. In this episode, we talk about how we have transformed our relationship with failure and no longer treat it like a bad thing. We understand that failure is an inevitable part of the journey of life and those of us with ADHD know this very well. Our society encourages us to avoid stuff that is unpleasant. This is ultimately detrimental because we need to embrace hardship and failure. Please take risks. Reach big. Fall down and then get right back up again. Ready set fail forward!

ADHD Myth-busting: Strengths and NOT my thing | Attention Different Fireside Chats24 Apr 202500:44:16

In this powerful roundtable episode of Attention Different, host Stephen Tonti brings together eight ADHD adults from diverse backgrounds to share their experiences, challenge common misconceptions, and celebrate what makes their neurodivergent brains unique. From late diagnoses to childhood realizations, these candid conversations reveal the complex reality of living with ADHD and the journey toward self-acceptance. As Stephen puts it: "ADHD is not a disorder—we are a group of ADHD adults determined to address the ways in which our unique brain wiring makes our lives more complicated but also to celebrate the traits that make us some of the most creative and exciting members of any given generation."

You'll Learn:

  • ADHD is not just about "inability to focus"—many people with ADHD experience hyperfocus, but can't always choose what captures their attention
  • The presentation of ADHD symptoms varies widely between individuals and across gender lines, with "masculine" presentations being more visible/disruptive while "feminine" presentations often go undiagnosed
  • Many ADHD adults develop complex masking and coping mechanisms to fit into neurotypical systems, often at great personal cost
  • There's no correlation between ADHD and intelligence—the condition affects people across all IQ levels
  • Late-life diagnosis is common, especially among women, immigrants, and those from families that didn't recognize neurodivergence
  • The path to self-acceptance often involves reframing ADHD as an identity rather than a disorder
  • Many adults with ADHD wish they had been told earlier: "There's nothing wrong with you," "Weird is cool," and "You are worthy of help"
