Unplug, Together with Tiffany Shlain, Internet Pioneer22 Oct 202000:45:51

Webby Awards founder and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Tiffany Shlain chats with host Ellie Knaus about how we can reboot our relationship with technology.

Thank goodness for the internet. We crave connectivity in these isolating times - and I felt so lucky this month to be able to meet my best friend's baby over Zoom - but what connections are we missing when we're glued to our screens?

In this conversation, we examine our own impulses when it comes to social media, newsfeeds, and online shopping, and we discuss what can be gained - in loving connections and creativity - if we follow in our guest's footsteps and take a "technology shabbat" one day a week.

Shlain's bestseller 24/6: The Power of Unplugging One Day a Week is now available in paperback (8/20/20). Think you could do it? Listen up!

Writing Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, Mom Life, & Fred Roger's Legacy with Becky Friedman16 Jan 201801:17:53

#158 The delightful Becky Friedman, twice Emmy nominated head writer of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood (PBS Kids), is in studio. We talk about her transition from preschool teacher to children’s media creator, her recent west coast migration, the new mom friends search, our babies’ celebrity dopplegangers, Fred Rogers' legacy, our comedic screenwriter husbands named Adam (hers executive produced The Daily Show with John Stewart), the kid games we play while lying down from exhaustion, pregnancy while parenting a toddler, and her journey from intern to head writer of a cultural phenomenon. Of course, I also get to the bottom of important listener questions like: why doesn't Daniel Tiger wear pants and how his mom is so frigging calm? xx Ellie Knaus

GUEST BIO:

Becky Friedman is a children's television writer whose work can be seen on such shows as Super Why, Creative Galaxy, Wishenpoof, the Stinky and Dirty Show, and If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. Most notably, she has been Head Writer for Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, for which she received two Emmy nominations, and countless questions about why Daniel doesn't wear pants. Currently she is working as the story editor for the forthcoming animated series Esme and Roy produced by Sesame Workshop. Becky also opined on her love of Marlo Thomas in an essay published in the anthology "When We Were Free to be, Looking Back at a Children's Classic and the Difference it Made." After living in New York City for 15 years, Becky, her husband, and 2.5 year old daughter Meadow just made the leap and moved to Los Angeles, CA...and then decided to add to the chaos of a cross-country move by getting pregnant with baby #2, due in February. Becky tells herself she thrives in chaos. Becky may or may not be correct.

Rachel Blanchard on Standing Your Ground & Always Finding the Upside08 Jan 201801:10:08

After a forced evacuation from the raging California fires, film and television actress (and dynamite human being) Rachel Blanchard, her composer hubby Jeremy, and their baby girl Maxine spent the week with us at Chez Sztykiel! It was a terrible situation, but we were so grateful to get to have the time with them. In this hilarious mom-friend episode, we're talking: calm walks turned stressful stroller fits, dixie cups full of wine, babies falling off beds, husbands with solitary jobs (screenwriter vs composer), baby raising while working on set, co-sleeping, crib mishaps, moving houses, children's privacy, social media free weddings, photo book making, evacuating fires, surviving the holidays, finding quiet time, postpartum complications, pubes, and the ridiculous way Ellie got a parking ticket.

Rachel Blanchard is an actress best known for - PEEP SHOW, FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS & FARGO. She can currently be seen on Directv’s YOU, ME, HER. Ellie also wants everyone to remember she was Cher in the television show CLUELESS. Her husband Jeremy Turner is Former Assistant Principal Cello with the Metropolitan Opera turned Emmy nominated composer (and the composer of Atomic Moms theme song!). P.S. Rachel never got that donut.

Ellie Knaus acts as host, senior editor, executive producer, show runner, technical director, president of programming, you get the point. This is a podcast by one mom for all of us moms.

Cut the Crap and Get Organized in 2018 | Robyn Reynolds, Hollywood's Professional Organizer 03 Jan 201800:47:08

Happy New Year! We're back with brand new content next week, but while I recover from some sort of holiday season plague, here's one of our favorites from May 2017. Certified organizer Robyn Reynolds swears we can organize ANYTHING that’s worth keeping and bring harmony into our homes. This single mom with a can-do spirit and no-nonsense attitude whips Ellie’s haphazard “put away” habits into shape.

She teaches us how to streamline our kitchen in order to turn our morning routines into a well-caffeinated machine.

She walks us through the process of getting our closets under control (and saving money in the process!)

She gives an excellent mom hack for how the heck to keep track of what-you-put-where in all those darn diaper bag pockets.

In this podcast you’ll also laugh at what a rainy day means at Robyn’s L.A. home and how to keep your cool with home maintenance issues, like when the 1-800 customer service for your broken washing machine is leaving you high and dry.

Bravo TV, are you listening? Cause Atomic Moms is pretty sure that Robyn Reynolds, Long Island’s answer to Marie Kondo, needs her own show! xx Ellie Knaus

Faith Fowler is “…the most important currency of our city, a loving, egoless, inspiring leader who doesn’t see color, doesn’t see class, who looks at our poorest, most neglected citizens and sees only hope and opportunity. And humor.” She cares for and empowers thousands, including homeless mothers and children. In this episode, we talk to this fierce champion of ALL HUMANS about race, breaking the poverty cycle, addiction, her non-profit entrepreneurial projects including Tiny Homes. Relationship S.O.S. | Dr. Laura Berman on intimacy, marriage, and motherhood13 Dec 201700:51:39

Originally aired: Dec 6, 2016. Join us over the holidays on Instagram and Facebook!

If you liked our "How Not to Hate Your Husband After Having Kids" episode, you'll LOVE this one too. You’ve seen Dr. Laura Berman as a frequent guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Dr. Oz Show, and The Steve Harvey Show. New York Times bestselling author, world renowned sex and relationship educator, and clinical professor of ob-gyn and psychiatry at Northwestern University Dr. Berman is here to help us mamas elevate our relationships with the ultimate “Jedi Mind Trick.” She swears that mastering our energy is the key to living an empowered and loving life. We = atoms. Atoms = energy. And let’s face it, most of us go about our lives unconsciously playing off each other’s energy, for better or worse. In this podcast, Dr. Laura Berman shares with host Ellie Knaus and guest co-host Bridget Moloney-Sinclair findings from her latest book, Quantum Love: Use Your Body’s Atomic Energy to Create the Relationship You Desire. She schools us in how we can cultivate feelings of optimism, hopefulness, and curiosity, and act from an empowered and truthful place as “a co-creator of our reality”. She swears it’s possible to hold onto our positive energetic state (good vibes) regardless of the cranky downers we have to interact with. And you’ll be blown away by the life-changing events that led Dr. Berman to developing this book (it was ‘another freak and growth experience’ (AFGE) after another).

Because Dr. Laura Berman is a leading expert in sex and love, we also talk about the first-year parenting phenomenon (ya know, the “I want to murder my partner” one) and what that’s really about. We also talk bedroom times: what sex means to men, how we can untangle ourselves from the associated shame, and also how we can raise sexually healthy children. Plus Dr. Berman shares a big-time parenting challenge she recently experienced with her impulsive teenage son and how she consciously handled it with both authority and love.

Bonding with Your Baby (And Beyond) | Dr. Victoria Simms, PhD05 Dec 201700:42:18

#153: Child development specialist and philanthropist Dr. Victoria Simms is here to help us bond with our children. We all know separation anxiety can be frustrating, heart-wrenching, and guilt-inducing. Our guest has created a darling multi-faceted tool for families called “CuddleBright” to make transitions smoother and separation less overwhelming. And for those of you who had an “insecure attachment” with your own parent, Dr. Simms gives us hope. There is always the opportunity to break the generational patterns of drama and grow, heal, and thrive in our relationship with our kids. xx Ellie Knaus

Body CONSCIOUS | Nikki DeLoach, Jen Dede: open-heart surgery, fertility, friendship28 Nov 201701:06:22

Glennon Doyle "Untamed" + Love in the Time of Coronavirus | #1 New York Times Bestselling Author27 Mar 202000:46:20

#251 • Glennon Doyle shares how to love in the time of coronavirus. This mother of three and #1 New York Times bestselling author of LOVE WARRIORCARRY ON, WARRIOR, and UNTAMED (March 2020) speaks with host Ellie Knaus about mother issues, anxieties, honoring our boundaries, and feeling all the feelings while housebound.

Moments after hopping off the phone with Glennon, we discovered my immunocompromised husband Adam has a 102 fever and is now in self-quarantine in our bedroom. I didn't realize it at the time, but this was exactly the conversation I needed to have in order to step bravely into this unknown. Luckily the kids are being hilarious though this mess. Organized Chaos with Claire Coffee 07 Nov 201700:57:54

#149 Get out the wine and the last of the Halloween candy! I’ve been leaning heavy on the experts as of late, and it was about damn time we had an unfiltered mom podcast full of laughter, commiseration, and perfectionism undone. TV star Claire Coffee played Adalind on NBC’s supernatural show GRIMM for six seasons. She, along with her musician husband Chris Thile (Yo Yo Ma told him where to get the engagement ring), and their son 2.5 year-old Calvin, rocked out at our home between A Prairie Home Companion with Chris Thile west coast shows. We talk about the struggle between being creatively fulfilled and getting Mom sh*t done, mama separation anxiety, traveling the world with a toddler, and how parenting is SO DIFFERENT with Ellie’s second child. We love to play into the ridiculousness of our wacky family life with our creative husbands, and jokingly give ourselves and each other a hard time in this episode, but I’d be remiss not to say Claire Coffee is one of the most generous and thoughtful women on this planet and a huge reason this podcast exists. We all need a mom friend who commiserates but doesn’t accept any self-defeating excuses and sends tubs of ice cream when you’re on bed rest. xx Ellie Knaus

Celebrating Rainbow Babies | Pregnancy After Loss 24 Oct 201700:51:42

Dr. Jessica Zucker is back on Atomic Moms. As a Los Angeles-based psychologist and writer specializing in women's reproductive and maternal mental health, Dr. Zucker is a leading voice in miscarriage and pregnancy loss awareness. When her @ihadamiscarriage Instagram account was named “the bravest use of social media” by Women’s Health Magazine U.K., she shared, "My personal experience was a way to model for other women around the world that there is absolutely no shame in loss." We discuss her own experience as a rainbow mother and offer guidance to a listener struggling with prenatal anxiety after loss. "... the guilt, sadness and fear caused by what happened last time are stopping me from truly enjoying this new pregnancy, from connecting to my baby and being fully present. What is your advice to new parents who are preparing for the arrival of a new baby while dealing with so many fears and feelings?”

But first, a remarkable mother of two shares her own journey with grief after the termination of a much wanted pregnancy and the unexpected way she found help to emotionally heal. She's definitely my mom hero of the week. This episode is for all mothers and a testament to the strength and openheartedness of our listener community. And we stand in solidarity with these women.

It's a zoo at the Sztykiels. This up all night with the infant thing while trying to stay semi-sane for the other kid is for the birds. (Fun updates on Instagram!) Time to enjoy an Atomic Moms classic (5/31/16). In my second interview with conscious parenting trailblazer Dr. Shefali Tsabary, we share insights from her second New York Times bestseller "The Awakened Family: A Revolution in Parenting". This exclusive interview is for anyone who wonders why her kid can drive her crazy…for anyone hungry for external validation…for anyone wishy washy with her parental boundaries. Honestly, it’s a conversation for all humans, with or without kids. And you don’t want to miss Dr. Shefali Tsabary give host Ellie Knaus the best spiritual pep talk ever so that Ellie can finally let go of the performance pressure she has carried since she was a kid. Since taking the the parenting world by storm with her New York Times bestseller "The Conscious Parent: Transforming Ourselves, Empowering our Children", Dr. Shefali Tsabary has changed the conversation from how can we fix our kids to how can we heal ourselves. Last month Oprah Winfrey said, “Parents…you will be wowed and awed by her.” Listeners, we can’t wait to hear what you think/feel. Please subscribe and leave a review on iTunes. Social Distancing, Extreme Family Time, and Final Moments of Freedom | Internet Mom Friends Sonni Abatta and Ellie Knaus 20 Mar 202000:58:27

#250 • Who else needs a girlfriend call right about now? It's Day #6 of our Sztykiel family quarantine. It’s just been me, my handsome, funny immunocompromised husband Adam, and our preschooler and kindergartner at home. Am I losing it? A little. Is my germophobia through the roof? Absolutely. But hey! Reporter turned social media rockstar, blogger, and mother of 3 Sonni Abatta asked me to share some calmness and positivity on her podcast 30 Something with Sonni Abatta. Did I do that? Not really. BUT we did have a great time commiserating over the insanity that has wreaked havoc on our family life.

While I try to find the humor in this episode, I am keenly aware that it's a privilege to be able to spend this time together. And my heart goes out to everyone suffering during this difficult and unprecedented moment in history. This podcast was completed one hour before California Gov. Newsom issued a statewide “Stay at Home” order.

Stay safe. Stay well. Social distance!

Gentle Discipline | Sarah Ockwell-Smith Author, Coach29 Aug 201700:44:15

Fundraising Contest! Go to our social media posts for details! Whining, biting, hitting, kicking, and screaming? What to do and how to discipline? Author, expert, and mom of 4, Sarah Ockwell-Smith is here to help.

Y'all, the newborn honeymoon stage is wearing off, and we’re figuring out how to be this new and improved version of our family while juggling life and not completely losing our marbles. No surprise. I'm exhausted and a tad overwhelmed. Almost 4 year-old Big Sis is incredibly loving and patient with her baby sister's needs and colic wails. (Seriously. She's crushing it). But I’m having hard time mustering up the energy to parent my eldest as patiently as I have in the past. Parent coach, author, and mother of 4 Sarah Ockwell-Smith gives me skills to make home life easier, a reality check about my expectations, and advice from her brand new book GENTLE DISCIPLINE: Using Emotional Connection – Not Punishment – to Raise Confident, Capable Kids (August 29, 2017). After listening to this episode, you better believe I'm marking my calendar for 2030. Listen to the episode to find out why.

Swimming| Safety & Overcoming Fear! 18 Jul 201701:14:44

A brand new podcast update from Ellie, including instructions for our baby naming contest, the insane LA LA Land things Ellie is doing in an attempt to flip her baby around from "sunny side up", and listener notes on last week's podcast "The Baby Waiting Game".

Then we highlight this episode from February 2017 that could save your child’s life. I can’t wait for you to meet guest SELENA WILLOWS, a mom of two, a nutrition and wellness coach as well as the child swim instructor who taught my toddler to swim safely across a pool in less than two weeks! We’ll talk with Selena about water safety (like the chilling fact that it takes less than 20 seconds for a child to stop fighting for breath), the spiritual experience of witnessing a child push past their fears and perceived limitations, as well as how she coaches. “Swimming is one of those things that children can learn very quickly if people get out of their way,” Selena says. “I often say I don’t so much teach as I facilitate. I provide a safe environment where kids are empowered and they get to learn how to swim — they get to teach themselves how to swim. I guide them, but I do very little instruction.”

We also go WAY BEYOND swim lessons into Selena’s mantra to “live life on purpose” and her own transformative experience of LOSING 100 pounds. And Selena will offer a “breakthrough homework assignment” for us moms to achieve greater clarity about getting to the root of shame and how it affects us physically inside and out.

Baby Waiting Game | Ellie Knaus + Adam Sztykiel 11 Jul 201700:44:57

We could meet this baby any moment folks! My modified bed rest restrictions have been lifted and she’s welcome to join us anytime. The acid reflux situation is real (as you’ll hear in my voice on the show) and so is nesting at our new home. Literally. You will not believe what is oozing out of our walls. I’m serious.

In this relaxed and fun episode, I grill my birth partner about whether he’s ready to be my pushing wingman again. And I ask him what he plans to do differently in raising Baby Girl #2. You’ll also hear one of our biggest motivating factors in life. Believe me, it’s one not many people would fess up to.

We also get into an honest debate over what it means to share on social media. For example, should a mom not announce in a Facebook or Instagram caption if she had an unmedicated birth because another mom could feel bad? And why would a mom want share that information anyways? We hit all sides of the argument.

Sending love in these final days (?) hours (?) minutes (?) before we meet Sabrina’s sister. If I happen to not be here next week because I'm filling a gigantic pad with witch hazel, definitely check out one of the amazing experts I've had on the show in the past month! xx Ellie

With her gentle and compassionate approach, practical advice, and no judgment attitude, Jen helps us debunk sleep training myths and answers all my questions when it comes to ages 0-5. How can families transition out of co-sleeping with older children? When should you ditch the crib if they’re not climbing out of it? How do you convince a toddler to stay in his own bed? #249 • How do we shop with a sustainable mindset? Cozy in for this comforting chat with British zero-waste expert Tara Button, a former advertising copywriter who couldn't stomach that she was selling people stuff they didn't actually need. She founded BUYMEONCE.com as a consumer guide for those of us who want to buy a quality item once and learn how to care for it. We discuss how to shop with a sustainable mindset, how to care for the things we already have, and her book A Life Less Throwaway: The Lost Art of Buying for Life (Ten Speed Press).

These are uncertain times. Thank you for taking precautions with your sweet families by practicing social distancing. The elderly and those of us with immunocompromised spouses - like Adam - truly appreciate it. I'm aware that the elderly and children who depend on school lunches will be especially hit hard. Daddy's Home | Joe Ballarini, Writer, Director, Funny Dad23 May 201700:49:17
Funny work-from-home dads and best friends Joe Ballarini and Adam Sztykiel (my husband) riff on how fatherhood has changed them, how much us moms scare them, and how they’d man-handle the apocalypse (God help us all!). We share Sabrina’s latest antics (!!!), the dads’ opposing views on “maternal gatekeeping”, marriage after kids, Joe's epic Dad-urdays with his adorable, half British baby Theo, and what they hope to remember most about these intense early years of parenting. We also talk about the inception of Joe's brand new middle grade novel series, A BABYSITTER’S GUIDE TO MONSTER HUNTING (published by fancy pants Harper Collins), the first of which will be released this June. Expect to see it in theaters as well, as Montecito Picture Company and Walden Films are producing Ballarini's film adaptation. I’m so proud to report that it has fantastically written, funny, and super empowered female leads (#girlpower!), and I cannot wait for Sabrina to be old enough to read it. How to Get Organized and Get It Done Fast! 16 May 201700:47:08
Buh bye clutter! Robyn Reynolds swears we can organize ANYTHING that's worth keeping. This single mom with a can-do spirit and no-nonsense attitude whips Ellie's haphazard "put away" habits into shape. She teaches us how to streamline our kitchen in order to turn our morning routines into a well-caffeinated machine. She walks us through the process of getting our closets under control (and saving money in the process!), and gives an excellent mom hack for how the heck to keep track of what-you-put-where in all those darn diaper bag pockets. In this podcast, you'll also laugh at what a rainy day means at Robyn's L.A. home and how to keep your cool with home maintenance issues, like when the 1-800 customer service for your broken washing machine is leaving you high and dry. Ch-Ch-Changes! Ellie & Adam on Moving, Bed Rest, & Third Trimester02 May 201700:25:14
In this madcap family huddle, comedy screenwriter Adam Sztykiel (aka “Sabrina’s favorite”) and host Ellie Knaus catch a breath from packing up the house and make light of the insanity that seems to be knocking on their door. Ellie replays a couple Friday nights ago when she suspected another woman of checking out her husband. (And it wasn't weird at all that Ellie wasn't wearing panties at the time.) Adam, who swears he just has a really high tolerance before feeling things, shares other recent events that made “water come out of my face." And the couple kicks off Ellie’s third trimester before rushing back into the house to help the handyman dismantle their lives for an upcoming move. The 'Good Enough' Mama | Erin Williams, Illustrator, Cancer Research Specialist, Writer25 Apr 201700:33:05
Mama identity crisis? Join the club. After stepping into the all-consuming role of mom, how the heck do we reclaim our sense of self outside of motherhood? Writer, illustrator, and cancer research specialist ERIN WILLIAMS shares the deeply personal solutions that are working for her, especially how she's embracing 'good enough' when it comes to being mom. In addition to writing raw, complex personal essays, and conveying the messiness of motherhood in her artwork, and caring for her two year-old Lucy, Erin Williams is an oncology research specialist. And while that admirable job title would make a lot of us need a drink (or 3), Erin shares what it’s like being a sober mom and having to learn to cope with feeling everything. Sensitive mamas out there, this one is especially for you. And if you listened to last week’s episode with Jordan Reid, Erin’s co-author of "The Big Fat Activity Book for Pregnant People” (Penguin Random House), you WILL NOT BELIEVE Erin’s side of their ‘meet-cute’ friend story. As much as I want to spill the beans, you’ll have to hear it from her. I’ll just say: sometimes the most supportive people in our lives show up in the most unexpected ways. xo Ellie Knaus Reach out on instagram/twitter: @atomicmoms and Facebook (search: atomic moms) show notes: atomicmoms.com Read Erin’s blog: www.goosecamp.co/ Take a peek at all the awesomeness available for sale at Erin and Jordan's online shop: www.glamcamp.co Check out where Erin is a cancer research specialist: https://www.flatiron.com/ See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Mother of Reinvention | Jordan Reid, Ramshackle Glam18 Apr 201700:31:30
Jordan Reid hustles like a mother-lover: raising two young children, writing books, and running the uber popular RamShackleglam.com, where she shares funny parenting moments, DIY videos, and refreshingly honest details about her family life. But before all that cool stuff started, Jordan endured what Ellie would describe as a Joseph Campbell-esque “dark night of the soul” or what Jordan calls a “truly spectacular career implosion!” (HINT: you’ll never ever look at one particular insanely popular tv show the same way ever again). From that experience, she discovered the magic of reinvention and promises us, “If you put in the work, and you do the things you say you’re gonna do, your past experiences all make sense.” Of course, transitions are a b*tch, and her life as an accomplished author and popular website founder isn’t always an Instagram-worthy bed of roses. (Isn’t it a GD relief to hear that?!) Jordan gives us a heart-to-heart about the negative online commenters she’s had to handle in the past and tips for how to rise above the haters (real or imagined). We also laugh about her brand new book “The Big Fat Activity Book for Pregnant People”, co-authored by her gal pal Erin Williams, and published by Penguin Random House. If you overhear me giggling in my OBGYN waiting room, it’s cause I’m doing the book’s “Bad Baby Names” word search. xx Ellie Knaus atomicmoms.com Subscribe and write a review on iTunes.com/AtomicMoms so new moms can find us! The Big Fat Activity Book for Pregnant People (April 25, 2017): "This book, part guide, part journal, part activity book, chronicles the trimesters of pregnancy (and the fourth trimester, aka having a newborn) and encourages readers to both entertain themselves while reflecting on this incredibly meaningful experience in a woman’s life." - Penguin Random House See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Pregnancy, Cancer, and Courage | Warrior Mom11 Apr 201700:59:57
Teresa Palmer and host Ellie Knaus speak with Helen Tunea about her intense journey from pregnant cancer patient to thriving mother of two. In this candid and inspiring conversation, Helen and Teresa share the life-changing power of friendship, including fun advice for how the rest of us can “pick up” lifelong mom friends. For the first time publicly, Helen opens up about her moment-to-moment decision making when she was diagnosed with stage 3, triple negative breast cancer while pregnant with her second child. She shares her fears at the time of not being present for first child, her countless surgeries and chemotherapy while pregnant, and how they got through it all! You'll definitely want to hear Helen's advice for what NOT to do or say when supporting a friend with illness and HOW to best show up for her in times of need! Helen's #MOMBOMB: "Pain is temporary, warriors are forever” Follow Teresa's parenting journey on our favorite mom blog: YourZenMama.com Facebook: "Atomic Moms” page and Twitter/Instagram Meet Our Guests: Born and raised in Chicago to Romanian refugees, and the middle child of five, Helen Tunea was the first American born of her family. She found her bi-cultural upbringing made it easy to connect with people which lead her to a career in HR, and in the global tech industry. She’s traveled the world for work and play, met her soul mate (also a first gen/Mexican) and chef. They moved to LA when said soul mate-now husband received an offer to open a restaurant in Hollywood. They had their daughter Luna, and soon after, she was diagnosed with breast cancer soon after finding out she was pregnant with her son. She underwent a year of chemo/radiation treatment and gave birth. Now in remission, Helen is the head of talent acquisition for a global tech company in Silicon Beach, and lives in Palms with her family. Teresa Palmer splits her time between the Hollywood Hills and Adelaide, South Australia with her husband Mark and their kids, 3 yr old son Bodhi and 4 month old son Forest. "Motherhood in Hollywood" | Heather Brooker 04 Apr 201700:45:59
Emmy award-winning journalist turned actress/comedian/host Heather Brooker chats with fellow parenting podcast host Ellie Knaus about everything under the L.A. sun. Join us as we laugh about the recent moment Heather's family video went Youtube viral, and go international with us as we discuss how Heather’s recent family trip to London took a shocking turn when she found her family in the midst of the Parliament attack (she gave live news coverage to US stations while her daughter played in a nearby park). Ellie shares the recent loss of their family pet, how she shared the news with Sabrina, and the sweetest (and perhaps most bizarre) FaceTime exchange in iPhone history. Because we're talking "Motherhood in Hollywood", we also have a playful social media tug-of-war over the fine line between not wanting to project a falsely perfect family image while also not sharing our dirty laundry or our children’s meltdowns. And of course, we have to ask Heather: what’s the biggest misconception about motherhood in Hollywood? x Ellie Knaus, Atomic Moms mom-in-chief Guest Bio: Heather is an actress, comedian, Emmy Award-winning Journalist, and host of the Motherhood in Hollywood podcast (available on iTunes!). She’s appeared on TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy, The Office, Fresh Off The Boat, and The Mindy Project. She has appeared as a guest on CBS2/9 Los Angeles, and is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post, mom.me, Wonderwall and the Today Show Parenting Team as well as her own blog. "How Not to Hate Your Husband After Kids" | Jancee Dunn, Bestselling Author 28 Mar 201700:57:00
Relationship tips + hilarious parenting stories. Podcast #122: New York Times best-selling author Jancee Dunn and host Ellie Knaus share the ins and outs of their relationships and compare funny notes on the home front. Dunn's new book, "How Not to Hate Your Husband After Kids," (Little, Brown and Company) is described as "part memoir of discovery, part parenting and marriage how-to, and part intriguing exploration of science that explains why we behave the way we do." We laugh about what frustrates us most about our partners in Newbornland. For example, I remember in my sleep-deprived haze telling Adam he was not allowed to sit in the driveway with his phone after work and that if he wanted to go to the bathroom right when he got home then he should use the one at the office!... (Sorry, Adam. Can't wait to be back in the thick of it with baby #2 this July!) Jancee shares communication skills she learned from an FBI hostage negotiator (for her husband, but I swear it applies to toddlers as well), and we discuss the traps of "maternal gatekeeping". If you find yourself losing your cool with your partner in front of your child, Jancee offers a powerful suggestion for calming your temper. And if you're struggling to make Quality Family Time (Q.F.T.) in this crazy age of kids sports and non-stop birthday parties, Jancee offers the guilt-free, sure-fire way to get off the hook! Yes, buckle up. We cover a lot of ground! xx Ellie Guest Bio: New York Times bestselling author Jancee Dunn is the author of five books, including "But Enough About Me", a memoir of her rock and roll years, (HarperCollins, 2008) and an essay collection, "Why Is My Mother Getting A Tattoo? And Other Questions I Wish I Never Had To Answer", a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor (Ballantine, 2009). In 2012, with Cyndi Lauper, she cowrote "Cyndi Lauper: A Memoir". Her first book for children, "I’m Afraid Your Teddy Has Been Naughty Today", will be published in 2017 by Candlewick Press. She was a staff writer at Rolling Stone for over a decade, and a veejay at MTV for five years. She writes for many publications, among them the New York Times, Vogue, Food & Wine, and Parents, and was a columnist for GQ and O, The Oprah Magazine. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, the author Tom Vanderbilt, and their daughter. BabyMoon + Meeting the Baby | Bridget & Becca Return21 Mar 201700:26:16
#121 Mom friends Ellie Knaus and Bridget Moloney-Sinclair crash Becca McHugh’s babymoon! We find out if Hawaii is as “relaxing” as it sounds with a three year-old and a thrill-seeking husband. We also address the Do’s and Don’ts of meeting the newborn. Sleep-deprived and always candid, brand new second time mom Bridget enlightens Becca and Ellie as to their future of juggling young children and infants (like, who do you address first when they both want something at the same time?…how about when the older one takes the new transition out on the dog?…does motherhood foster or destroy creativity?...and last but not least, do peepee teepees actually work?). Most notably, Ellie interviews her youngest Atomic Moms guest ever: Bridget's six week old baby George. Family Huddle | Ellie Knaus and Adam Sztykiel 07 Mar 201700:39:59
We're celebrating the midpoint of my second pregnancy! 20 weeks down. 20 weeks to go. I sit down with Adam Sztykiel (comedy screenwriter/ sitcom show runner/ husband of almost 10 years) to catch up on all the ridiculousness happening at Chez Sztykiel. I find out what it's like living with a pregnant zombie (me) who has suddenly revived herself with an intense second trimester "nesting” frenzy. Our toddler correspondent, Sabrina, makes her Atomic Moms debut to reveal the gender of our baby! And throughout the episode, she pops in to share her thoughts on having a sibling, what’s hot in entertainment news (on Nick Jr), and to belt out "Moana". She’s pushing hard for her own spin-off podcast (N-O) or a spot on Ellen (not gonna happen). We also answer listener questions about the ways in which our first child is like us and totally different from us, how Adam measures up to his own manly-man father, and the most exciting purchase Ellie has made this year (yes, folks, it’s a label maker). Join our conversation on our Facebook "Atomic Moms" page, Instagram: @atomicmoms, and Twitter: @atomicmoms! Don't forget to subscribe on iTunes.com/AtomicMoms! Take a Deep Dive with Selena Willows28 Feb 201701:03:08
This episode could save your child's life. I provide a safe environment where kids are empowered and they get to learn how to swim -- they get to teach themselves how to swim. I guide them, but I do very little instruction.” We also go WAY BEYOND swim lessons into Selena’s mantra to “live life on purpose” and her own transformative experience of LOSING 100 pounds. And Selena will offer a “breakthrough homework assignment” for us moms to achieve greater clarity about getting to the root of shame and how it affects us physically inside and out. P.S. Here's hoping I kick this preschool cold by the time Sabrina is in college. Jeez Louise.
