PSP 381: Letting Our Kids Fail So They Can Succeed27 Aug 202400:34:23

It can be so hard to see our kids tumble and fall. No one wants to see their kids fail. But we rob our kids the ability to learn when we protect them from failure.

This can impact how we show up for their anxiety or OCD. It can impact how much freedom we give them. It can also decipher how much we micromanage what they eat, how much they sleep and how long they are on electronics.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I explore the idea that we have to let our kids fail in order to succeed. We also discuss how we have to give our kids some level of freedom in order to teach them to regulate themselves.

PSP 380: I Did Something Scary and You are About to Read About It20 Aug 202400:47:20

Sometimes we have to do something really scary in order to be our true selves. I started working on a memoir about social anxiety about five years ago. I finally finished the memoir but then six days later my husband passed away.

The memoir collected dust as I tried to piece myself and my family back together. A year and a half after he passed, I revisited the project. I wrote an epilogue detailing my grief journey and how it got even more complicated by my fear of being alone.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about why I wrote my social anxiety memoir and reveal some of my biggest fears about it being released.

Want to get my $127 social anxiety course for FREE? Pre-order my new memoir, Out of My Shell: Overcoming Social Anxiety from Childhood to Adulthood and send us the receipt and you’ll get the course for free! Just go to socialanxietyreality.com to learn more. This offer ends Oct 19, 2024.

PSP 371: Boosting Self-Esteem During Anxiety and OCD Struggles18 Jun 202400:39:43

Anxiety and OCD can rob our kids of so many things, including their self-esteem and self-worth. It is easy for them to feel hard on themselves when their anxiety or OCD is knocking them down. Often kids are extra hard on themselves during these times.

As parents we are intensely focused on helping our kids navigate anxiety or OCD, but there are some things we can do to boost their self-esteem as well.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I’ll explore some simple ways you can help your child’s self-esteem and self-worth, while supporting them around anxiety or OCD.

You finally found help for your child with anxiety or OCD but they don’t want to work on it.

Now what?

That can be beyond frustrating! Especially if it took you a long time to connect with the right resources or help.

But no need to throw the baby out with the bathwater. There is always a next step, even when our child or teen isn’t able or willing to work on anxiety or OCD.

PSP 279: How to help Your Child with OCD related to Contamination13 Sep 202200:40:57

OCD comes in many different shapes and flavors. One way it shows up is through the concept of “contamination.” Contamination means something different for each person who suffers from OCD, but they all have two things in common:

  1. Something/someone cannot be touched and should be avoided
  2. Contamination can spread from object to object, person to person (and even place to place)

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how parents can help their kids work through contamination fears.

PSP 278: Helping Kids with OCD Know They are Not Alone06 Sep 202200:34:40

Having OCD can be a lonely experience. Kids can feel like there is no one else out there who gets their struggles.

And really, who can blame them?

The media (and even worse social media) often spend their time talking about OCD like it’s a meme or an adjective.

But feeling alone does more than impact the mood and self-esteem. It can stand in the way of progress and impact our child’s long term success.

In this week’s episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about why it’s SO important to help kids with OCD not feel alone - and how we can go about doing that!

Here are some resources I discuss during the episode:

PSP 277: Learning How to Let Go of Perceived Control 30 Aug 202200:41:47

It is hard not to want to control our child’s anxiety or OCD journey. It is hard not to have expectations for how it should turn out. It’s human nature to want to do everything in our power to help our kids.

But sometimes the best thing we can do for ourselves and our children is to recognize what areas we do not control. Sometimes we can make the most progress when we learn to let go of expectations and perceived control.

In this latest episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I dive into our perceptions of control and explore the concept of acceptance and letting go.

PSP 276: How to Spot if You are Talking to OCD vs Your Child23 Aug 202200:56:52

OCD is sneaky! It hides in the questions our children ask. It disguises itself with curiosity, constant checking or over apologetic responses.

OCD is a family affair and it often gets us as parents to inadvertently grow it on a daily basis.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I explore the many ways OCD blindly hooks us in. I talk about what to look for and how to respond instead.

PSP 275: Helping Kids with Health Anxiety or OCD with Dawn Huebner16 Aug 202200:37:43

This week I brought Dr. Dawn Huebner onto the AT Parenting Survival Podcast to discuss how to help kids who have health anxiety or OCD. She also shares her newest book, Facing Mighty Fears About Health, which is part of her series, Dr. Dawn’s Mini Books About Might Fears.

PSP 274: Getting ahead of school refusal before school starts09 Aug 202200:53:22

The idea of going back to school can bring waves of panic for both you and your child. You might want to pretend the first day of school will never happen. Trust me I get it! But there are things we can do in advance to prepare our kids to lessen the likelihood of school refusal.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about some common anxiety and OCD themes that create school refusal and how to work on them before it becomes an issue for next school year.

PSP 273 Are You Remembering Your Own Mental Health?02 Aug 202200:32:52

When we are raising a child with anxiety or OCD it can be all consuming. So consuming that we put everything on hold, including our own mental health. This is a slippery slope because without our own mental stability, we won’t be able to be an anchor for our child.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I explore why it is so crucial we focus on our own mental health and how this will actually help our children as well.

PSP: 272 Dealing with Disappointment when Anxiety or OCD Comes Back26 Jul 202200:37:18

It can feel so good when anxiety and OCD pack their bags and give you your child back. Heck, give you your home back. So it can be more than jarring, when that unwanted guest shows back up at your front door.

It is normal to feel disappointment, hopelessness and fear.

What if things get really bad again?

What if all our progress goes out the window?

What if this is a life sentence?

Those are understandable feelings after riding past storms.

But anxiety and OCD symptoms come and go and all those skills they patiently grew haven’t disappeared.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to handle those feelings of overwhelm when anxiety or OCD symptoms show up once again. Feelings of overwhelm that not only impact your child, but you as well.

PSP: 271 Fighting OCD is Often Not What Kids Think19 Jul 202200:25:18

You’ll often hear the word “fight your OCD.” In fact, one of my favorite books about OCD is called Talking Back to OCD, by John March. But sometimes kids misunderstand what this means (and parents too). When we talk about fighting OCD we are usually talking about a counterintuitive way to push back. A way to approach OCD that may not seem like traditional “fighting” at all.

In this week’s podcast I talk about the counterintuitive way to “fight” OCD and why we need to clarify this with our kids.

PSP: 270 Getting Kids to Own Their Journey with Anxiety or OCD12 Jul 202201:03:10

Many of us learn how to help our kids with anxiety or OCD, but are we doing enough to help them help themselves? Helping our kids own their journey is key to their long term success.

It is similar to that old proverb: If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.

If we are the ones telling our kids what to do and how to do it, will they know how to do it for themselves one day?

Our main goal needs to be slowly fostering independence and building empowerment around their journey with anxiety or OCD.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to help kids own their journey with anxiety or OCD.

Most of us don’t love going to the dentist, but for some of our kids it can throw them into a state of panic and fear. This can become a real barrier for check ups, fillings and tooth extractions.

So what can a parent do?

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to handle the fear of going to the dentist one small step at a time.

PSP 268: Do You Take Your Child’s Anxiety or OCD Personally?28 Jun 202200:38:47

Anxiety and OCD can cause our children to act in ways that can be overwhelming, disheartening and sometimes even hurtful. It is easy to fall into the trap of taking our children’s anxiety or OCD personally.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about the many ways we can take our children’s anxiety or OCD behaviors personally, and what we can do instead.

PSP: 267 Helping Kids with Emetophobia | The Fear of Throwing Up with Dawn Huebner 21 Jun 202200:37:45

It might surprise some people that the fear of throwing up, Emetophobia, is one of the most common anxiety and OCD themes. For those of us raising a child with it, it isn’t surprising at all!

Sometimes this fear is triggered by an event or experience, but often it is the imagination alone that causes this immobilizing concern.

We all throw up and many of us see others throw up, but we are able to move past it without too much residual impact.

When you have Emetophobia you get stuck. Stuck worrying that you might get sick. Stuck worrying that others around you might get sick. Stuck analyzing, avoiding and ruminating. A vicious cycle that can keep people from living a full life.

I invited Dr. Dawn Huebner to the AT Parenting Survival Podcast to discuss how we can help our kids work through Emetophobia. In her book, Facing Mighty Fears about Throwing Up (Dr. Dawn's Mini Books about Mighty Fears), she teaches kids ages 6-10 years old skills to overcome these struggles.

PSP: 266 How to Turn Our Child’s “Failures” into Wins14 Jun 202200:35:04

We will all fall short sometimes and so will our children with anxiety or OCD. They will avoid, they will crumble, they will give in to their anxiety or OCD. That is all par for the course.

More often than not they will view these situations as “failures.” They might beat themselves up or use the experience as evidence that they can’t do it again.

So how do we approach our child who couldn’t make it, couldn’t do it, couldn’t get through it? There is learning and growth in everything we do, including our perceived failures.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to help our kids with these stumbles and how to turn those situations into a learning opportunity for growth.

Has your child or teen done an exposure they regret? Here is a YouTube video to help them with that.

PSP: 265 Helping Kids with Anxiety & OCD with the Downtime of Summer07 Jun 202200:43:00

Summer is here and with that comes extra free time for most of our kids with anxiety or OCD. You would think that would be a wonderful thing. Less pressure from school, homework and peer interactions. Less places to be and less things to do.

But for some of our kids that extra downtime can actually increase their anxiety or OCD issues.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about why that is and how to structure summer for kids with anxiety or OCD for optimal success.

PSP: 264 Parenting a Child When You Have Anxiety or OCD as Well31 May 202200:52:34

It’s hard enough to parent a child with anxiety or OCD, but when your own mental health issues are added to the mix, it can be all encompassing.

But it’s not all bad.

Having your own anxiety or OCD issues can help you be a better parent to a child with anxiety or OCD.

You can often empathize with your child more than others can. You know how it feels to have struggles and can relate to them in a way others may not. You might catch things earlier and get them help faster. All of this can be invaluable for your child.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I invited Stacy Quick, an OCD therapist with NOCD to talk about how she parents three kids with anxiety and OCD, while having OCD herself.

PSP 369: Incorrect Assumptions About ERP and OCD Exposure Work04 Jun 202400:37:30

There are many assumptions about ERP, Exposure Response Prevention, the go-to approach to treat OCD in kids. Some parents (and therapists) don’t understand how ERP is supposed to work, how it is done and what one should expect.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I explore the most common assumptions about ERP that are incorrect.

PSP: 263 Why Parents Shouldn’t Rationalize with OCD24 May 202200:47:10

It is so tempting to try and rationalize with our child’s OCD. It’s a knee jerk reaction that most of us do at some point. We might try to problem-solve their OCD issues away. We might try to bombard them with facts. We might try to convince them that their compulsive behavior won’t do what OCD says it will do.

But it is all a waste of breath. And worse than that, it can do some unintentional harm.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about why we shouldn’t rationalize with our child’s OCD and what to do instead.

PSP: 262 The Wait-and-See Approach to Anxiety or OCD17 May 202200:42:44

How often do we hear from family, friends and even doctors that we should “wait and see” if it gets worse. We should wait and see if the anxiety or OCD grows bigger. We should wait and see if anxiety or OCD becomes debilitating. We should wait and see if it is truly an issue.

It is like watching a tornado slowly approach your home and waiting to see if you really need to go seek shelter.

When we proactively help our kids with any anxiety or OCD issue we help them long term. The skills our children learn for anxiety or OCD also help them with life in general.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about why the wait-and-see approach for anxiety or OCD isn’t only bad advice, it can be detrimental to your child’s long-term success.

PSP: 261 Helping Anxious Kids Try New Things with Dawn Huebner10 May 202200:42:06

Anxious kids often have a hard time trying new things. This might impact what they’ll eat, what activities they’ll try or how they feel about going to new places. It can permeate their lives in a way that limits their experiences and holds them back.

When we cater to these fears we can unintentionally grow them bigger. But when we force our kids to try new things we can them shut down.

So what are parents supposed to do?

The key is to help our kids build skills so they can not only tolerate new experiences, but eventually enjoy them too!

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I invited Dawn Huebner back to the show to discuss ways we can help our kids build these skills.

In Dr. Dawn’s book, Facing Mighty Fears About Trying New Things, she teaches kids 6-10 years old how to bravely face new things.

PSP: 260 Handling Sexual Themes Around OCD 03 May 202200:49:00

OCD can be stigmatizing enough, but when you add sexual themes it can add another layer of guilt and shame.

It can also make parents and even therapists uncomfortable!

How are you supposed to deal with a sexual intrusive thought that makes you squirm? What if your child’s lack of motivation is due to the embarrassment over the content of their thoughts?

I invited Tracie Ibrahim, an OCD therapist with NOCD to help me unpack the many ways sexual themes can pop up and how to help them through it!

PSP: 258 The Impact of Child Anxiety or OCD on Marriages19 Apr 202200:54:59

There are many things that can put a strain on marriages. Once the honeymoon is over it can be a struggle to agree on finances, household chores and parenting. When anxiety or OCD is in the mix it can make a hard situation even harder.

Couples can struggle with a variety of issues around their child’s anxiety or OCD including:

-Disagreeing on the seriousness of their child’s anxiety or OCD.

-Blaming each other or their parenting for the issue.

-Wanting to approach the issue differently.

-Resentful that they are doing more than their partner.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Anxiety and OCD is draining enough. Couples don’t need to drain each other on top of it. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about the many issues couples might encounter while raising a child with anxiety or OCD, and how they can work through them.

PSP: 256 How Anxiety & OCD Impact Tech Use05 Apr 202200:51:46

As parents, we all struggle with our children’s tech use. It seems like most kids have their heads buried in their phone, computer or game console.

But what if it goes deeper? What if they are using technology to avoid their anxiety or OCD? What if they are using tech to do compulsions? Or what if tech is part of what is actually growing their anxiety?

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how anxiety and OCD impact tech use and what we can do about it.

PSP 255 How to Handle New OCD Themes29 Mar 202200:58:08

OCD is often like whack a mole. Just when you get one OCD theme under control, BOOM, another one creeps in to take its place.

This can be disheartening, especially if you don’t have the right mindset. OCD is an octopus and its tentacles are the themes. It doesn’t matter what tentacle is causing disruption, it’s the octopus that’s the problem.

Often OCD will present new themes when our kids are making progress with old ones. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a step backwards, sometimes it is a desperate octopus looking for a new angle.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to handle new OCD themes and how to use it as an opportunity to strengthen what your child already knows.

PSP 254 How the Inhibitory Learning Model Changes OCD Treatment22 Mar 202200:38:13

OCD approaches are constantly evolving and changing. This is in part due to the wonderful, ongoing research around OCD.

In recent years we’ve seen a growing number of OCD therapists incorporate ACT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, into OCD therapy.

We’ve also seen more clinicians embrace the Inhibitory Learning Model approach and have seen practitioners adapt ERP (Exposure with Response Prevention) to reflect these changes.

So what does this all mean?

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I’ll give you the short version of how this might impact how you help your child with OCD.

PSP 368: Why OCD Can Get Worse with the Wrong Therapist 28 May 202400:55:03

When you bring your child to a cardiologist, you expect they know all the evidence based treatment interventions to help your child. When you bring them to an endocrinologist you assume they are an expert in all things endocrinology.

But sadly you cannot assume the same when seeing a mental health therapist. The truth is not all therapists are properly trained and informed on how to assess, diagnose and treat OCD.

That means we, as parents, have to have enough knowledge to spot a helpful versus a harmful therapist. We have to know what evidenced based approaches work and why. We have to ask the right questions to know that we are in the right place.

PSP 252 Conscious Parenting with Sue DeCaro08 Mar 202200:46:16

Parenting can seem overwhelming and exhausting. But when you look at it through the lens of conscious parenting, it can offer some hidden gems.

Parenting can tell us so much about ourselves. It can offer us insights that we might not have gotten otherwise.

Our kids can also be our teachers. They come with so many gifts if we allow ourselves to see it that way.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk to Sue DeCaro about what it means to be a conscious parent and how we can use that to not only grow our children, but grow ourselves as well.

Anxiety and OCD doesn’t just live within our child, it lives within our home. It impacts everyone in the family, including the siblings.

What happens to the sibling when all eyes are focused on the child with anxiety or OCD? What happens to them when there are big meltdowns, panic attacks and overwhelm. What happens when they are the target of those BIG feelings?

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to help the siblings of kids with anxiety or OCD.

PSP 250 Are We Prematurely Rescuing Our Anxious Kids?22 Feb 202200:39:25

It is so hard to see our kids struggle. As parents, many of us know what things might trigger our child’s anxiety.

How often do we flinch before they feel anxious?

How often do we swoop in and remove the trigger before our child experiences it?

How often do we catch them before they even fall?

I know I have been guilty of this!

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about the knee jerk reaction to rescue our kids from potential anxiety and how it can actually serve to grow their anxiety long term.

PSP 249 How to Lovingly Detach from Our Kids Anxiety or OCD15 Feb 202200:55:58

Kids with anxiety or OCD need an anchor. They need us to be a rock that helps ground them through the chaos. Unfortunately we cannot do that when we are so immersed in their struggles that we are drowning right along with them.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk about learning how to lovingly detach from our child’s anxiety or OCD. I discuss how this is not about removing our love or ignoring our children’s problems, it’s just the opposite. I walk through the steps needed to work on loving detachment and become an anchor for our kids.

PSP 247 When OCD is Misdiagnosed as Learning Issues01 Feb 202200:46:08

OCD doesn’t just stay in our home, it likes to wreak havoc in all areas of life, including at school.

OCD intrusive thoughts and compulsions can make a child look like they:

Struggle to read

Struggle to write

Struggle to do math equations

Struggle to complete assignments

Struggle with comprehension

Struggle with focus

Struggle with expression

Struggle with problem-solving

Sometimes these struggles look like learning difficulties, and often it is just that. But sometimes it’s OCD hiding in disguise.

In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I discuss how OCD can quietly sabotage our child’s learning and how to identify if that’s an issue.

PSP 246 Letting Go of How Life Should Be25 Jan 202200:41:31

We have expectations about how our children’s lives should be. We have expectations about how our family should be. This can be reinforced by friends, family or even the school system.

So what happens when all those expectations fall short? What happens when we look at our reality and it doesn’t match up?

Parenting is messy and we don’t get to control how it unfolds. We don’t get to control our children’s struggles or what is plopped on our parenting plate.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk about how to let go of how life should be and how to embrace what is in front of us. There are hidden gems in acceptance.

PSP 245 Issues that Like to Partner with Anxiety or OCD18 Jan 202200:42:34

Anxiety and OCD don’t live in an isolated bubble. I wish they did! But unfortunately they often like to hang out with several other issues. The tricky part is knowing how to handle those issues differently, because they require us to do so.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk about five common issues that are often seen with Anxiety and OCD. I also explore how those issues are handled differently than how we handle their other struggles.

It is hard to watch your child being bombarded with intrusive thoughts day and night. No parent wants to see their child suffer, but how are they supposed to help their kids?

Unfortunately when it comes to OCD, the answer is often counterintuitive.

PSP: 243 Handling Preschooler Sleep Issues04 Jan 202200:45:11

PSP: 243 Handling Preschooler Sleep Issues

One of the first signs of anxiety in young children is sleep disturbance! Sleep disturbance can have a ripple effect throughout a child’s day. It can make them more cranky, anxious and irritable. It can make us, as parents, exhausted and impatient.

That’s why I thought it would be helpful if I brought Allison, a sleep and wellness coach, onto the podcast! Allison focuses on supporting parents who are having newborn, toddler and preschooler sleep issues.

In this latest episode of the  AT Parenting Survival Podcast, Allison explores what causes sleep issues in preschoolers and offers some helpful tips on how to address them!

To learn more about Allison’s work go to her website here. To learn more about her preschool sleep course go here.
