What actually happens inside the brain when someone channels—and who, or what, are they communicating with? Julie Ryan sits down with Darryl Anka, who has spent more than 40 years channeling the entity he calls Bashar, for a fascinating conversation about altered states, consciousness, UFO encounters, spirit guides, belief systems, soul purpose, and the nature of reality itself.
Darryl's extraordinary journey began after two close-range UFO sightings in 1973. Years later, he attended a channeling class and began experiencing an intense altered state that eventually developed into his decades-long work with Bashar.
But what happens to Darryl while he's channeling?
Darryl discusses EEG testing conducted during the making of his documentary First Contact and what he was told about changes in his brain activity while entering the channeling state. Julie shares her own experience having her brain scanned while communicating with Spirit, and together they explore whether channeling may involve measurable changes in consciousness.
Then comes an even bigger question:
Who are we actually communicating with when we channel?
Darryl shares his understanding of Bashar and describes channeling as potentially connecting with information beyond ordinary conscious awareness. Julie and Darryl compare their experiences with spirit guides, soul families, angelic beings, intuition, imagination, and altered states of consciousness.
Darryl also explains why he believes everyone experiences forms of channeling when deeply immersed in creativity or doing something they love.
The conversation then turns toward one of Bashar's best-known teachings: following your highest excitement. Darryl explains a five-step framework for identifying what excites you, acting on it to the best of your ability, releasing attachment to the outcome, maintaining a constructive state, and examining beliefs that arise along the way.
Julie and Darryl explore how beliefs may shape perception and behavior, why people remain stuck in circumstances they consciously say they don't want, and how identifying underlying beliefs can help change recurring patterns.
They also venture into provocative questions about physical reality, imagination, soul roles, extraterrestrial intelligence, spiritual guidance, and whether our earthly lives may have a much larger purpose than we realize.
And finally, Julie asks her signature question:
Why do we incarnate?
Darryl's answer brings the entire conversation full circle—from knowing something intellectually to experiencing it through physical life.
Whether you believe channeling represents communication with another intelligence, spiritual guidance, or an unusual state of consciousness, this conversation offers a fascinating look at what happens when we explore the boundaries of the mind.

Have you ever experienced a coincidence so perfectly timed that you wondered if it was really a coincidence at all? Julie Ryan welcomes historian and author Dr. Gerry Bowler back to the show for a fascinating exploration of synchronicity, intuition, collective consciousness, prediction, and whether we may sometimes know things before we consciously understand how.
Julie and Gerry examine extraordinary examples of ideas and events appearing independently at nearly the same time. Gerry shares his own experiences of researchers becoming interested in the same obscure centuries-old material and separate authors creating remarkably similar projects without knowing what the other was doing.
So where do ideas actually come from?
Could some of what we call coincidence be synchronicity? Can multiple people somehow access similar ideas independently? And could intuition occasionally allow us to recognize patterns before our conscious minds catch up?
Julie and Gerry explore theories involving collective consciousness, intuition, creativity, channeling, synchronicity, imagination, and the mysterious relationship between thought and reality.
They also discuss examples from popular culture that seem to anticipate later events, why authors sometimes say their characters appear to take over their stories, and whether creative inspiration can feel as though it comes from somewhere beyond the conscious mind.
The conversation ventures even deeper into ancient history, pyramids, hidden knowledge, spirituality, religion, prophecy, and the mysteries of human consciousness before arriving at the ultimate question:
Why do we incarnate?
If you've ever received a sign at exactly the right moment, known something without understanding why, experienced an impossible coincidence, or wondered whether the universe might be communicating with you, this conversation will give you plenty to consider.
Your Body Is Trying to Tell You Something—Are You Listening? With Harmony Slater - #848
What if your body isn't working against you—but trying to get your attention? Julie Ryan talks with somatic healer and transformational coach Harmony Slater about anxiety, burnout, body image, stored emotional patterns, and why constantly fighting what we feel may actually keep us disconnected from what our bodies are trying to communicate.
Harmony shares her own lifelong struggle with body image and perfectionism, even while achieving extraordinary levels of physical discipline through yoga and dance. Eventually, she began to see the very wound she'd spent years trying to overcome as an invitation to understand herself more deeply—and ultimately help others do the same.
Julie and Harmony explore the connection between the body, unconscious patterns, emotions, and the nervous system, including Harmony's perspective on how suppressed experiences can show up as physical tension and recurring patterns.
They also examine why the nervous system often chooses what's familiar over what's better. If you've ever wondered why you return to the same relationship patterns, fears, behaviors, or self-sabotaging thoughts even after years of personal growth, Harmony offers a fascinating explanation.
You'll discover why fear and excitement can produce similar sensations in the body, how the labels we attach to those sensations influence our experience, and why learning to stay present with uncomfortable feelings may change our relationship with them.
Julie and Harmony also discuss somatic breathwork, journaling, manifestation, thought patterns, intuition, presence, trauma, nervous-system regulation, and conscious creation—along with practical ways to reconnect with your body's inner wisdom.
And the conversation ultimately goes somewhere even deeper: Why are we here?
Who comes for us when we die—and are deceased loved ones already waiting as we approach the end of life? In this episode of the Ask Julie Ryan Show, Julie explores the spiritual side of dying, end-of-life visions, the 12 Phases of Transition®, and why people nearing death sometimes report seeing loved ones who died before them.
When end-of-life doula Terri calls about her Uncle Tom, Julie intuitively perceives him in Phase 7 of the 12 Phases of Transition®, the spiritual framework Julie describes in her book Angelic Attendants: What Happens As We Transition From This Life Into The Next. Their conversation explores what may happen as someone approaches death and the comforting experiences often reported by dying people and their families.
Do loved ones come to help us cross?
Why do some dying people appear to see or communicate with people who have already died?
And could these experiences offer comfort to families facing one of life's most difficult transitions?
Julie also connects with Juliana, who is carrying guilt following her mother's death from cancer. Julie shares the impressions she receives about Juliana's mother, discusses connecting with deceased loved ones through dreams, and offers her perspective on why love and connection continue after physical death.
Plus, Julie takes callers from around the world with questions about chronic sinus problems, kidney concerns, hair loss, digestive symptoms, unexplained joint pain, and cancer, sharing her medical-intuitive impressions and energetic-healing approach.
And there's a BIG announcement: Julie officially introduces the Ask Julie Ryan® app, including Spirit Chat™, a new way to submit a video question and receive a personal video response from Julie.
If you've ever wondered what happens before we die, whether our loved ones are waiting for us, or if anyone crosses over alone, this conversation offers Julie's spiritual perspective on one of life's greatest mysteries.
Dave Asprey spent decades biohacking his body and brain—but one of his most profound experiences had nothing to do with living longer. He says he encountered God. Now he joins Julie Ryan to explore what biohacking taught him about consciousness, trauma, energy, intuition, death, and the nature of reality itself.
Dave, the founder of Bulletproof and a pioneer of the modern biohacking movement, explains why he believes longevity and consciousness are deeply connected—and why his own journey took him from being a self-described skeptic to exploring meditation, neurofeedback, altered states, energy work, and spirituality.
Dave shares the experience he describes as meeting God at a Joe Dispenza event and explains how it affected his understanding of consciousness. Julie and Dave also tackle one of humanity's biggest questions: What happens when we die? Dave shares his views on death as a change of state, biocentrism, time, space, past lives, and whether consciousness extends beyond the physical body.
They also explore the connection between unresolved trauma and the body, including Dave's experiences using forgiveness practices and energy techniques, along with his provocative “Five F's” framework for understanding some of our most primal reactions.
Then things get even stranger.
Dave recounts experiments involving intention and AI, his experiences with energy work and psychic self-protection, and why he believes intuition can be understood as an altered state of consciousness.
You'll also hear how Dave went from a sick, 300-pound skeptic to one of the world's best-known voices in biohacking; why his journey began on a sacred mountain in Tibet; what decades of neurofeedback taught him about the mind; and why optimizing the body may ultimately be about something much bigger than simply living longer.
Julie and Dave also discuss ketones, sugar, coffee, meditation, emotional triggers, the mind-body connection, and the possibility that some of what we call fear may originate from ancient biological survival systems operating beneath conscious awareness.
Your Brain Is Filtering Your Reality—Here’s How to Change It With Lori Rogers - #845
Your brain is constantly deciding what deserves your attention—but could your thoughts and beliefs be influencing what you notice every day?
Julie Ryan talks with entrepreneur and Positive Activity™ co-creator Lori Rogers about how changing what she focused on transformed the way she responded to fear, uncertainty, caregiving, and some of the most difficult challenges of her life.
Lori once described herself as a chronic “worrywart.” Then several crises collided: her business was struggling, her daughter suffered a severe concussion, and her son with autism was approaching adulthood. Instead of allowing fear to dictate what happened next, Lori began experimenting with simple daily practices involving gratitude, kindness, movement, meditation, and intentional focus.
Julie and Lori explore the reticular activating system (RAS) and the role attention plays in determining which information we consciously notice. They discuss how repeated patterns of thought can influence our attention and behavior—and why changing those patterns may help us respond differently to the world around us.
But this conversation goes much deeper than positive thinking.
Lori explains why forced positivity doesn't work, how fear can interfere with intuition and decision-making, and why she began looking at difficult experiences as happening for her rather than simply to her.
She also shares the remarkable story of her adult son Craig, who is nonspeaking and communicates through spelling. Lori describes the profound messages he has shared with her about God, love, consciousness, and the nature of life, and why she now considers him one of her greatest spiritual teachers.
Julie and Lori also explore conscious creation, spiritual guidance, resilience, caregiving, manifestation, and a simple morning practice designed to help interrupt habitual thought patterns before they take over the day.
Julie Ryan has remotely scanned patients during surgeries for more than 30 years—but says she had never seen anything like what appeared during her husband Tim’s operation. As people around the world prayed for him, Julie perceived the operating-room ceiling completely filled with cherubs.
After weeks away from The Ask Julie Ryan Show while Tim underwent surgery, Julie returns to share the extraordinary experience and what she believes may have connected it to prayers being offered by children at Dominican schools around the world, along with Franciscan sisters in Illinois.
Then Julie takes calls from around the globe for medical intuitive scans, energetic healing, spirit communication, past-life exploration, and messages from deceased loved ones.
Mary asks about treatment-resistant depression and ketamine, leading to a discussion of metabolic approaches to mental health. Deanne calls about recurring C. diff and colitis, and Julie performs an energetic scan and healing while discussing digestive health.
Meg and her daughter Ella connect with Meg’s deceased father, Mike, and beloved dog Ebony. Julie explains how she believes anyone can begin communicating with deceased loved ones and explores whether animals can participate in signs from Spirit.
Nick calls from Thailand about his lifelong fear of animals. Julie explores what she perceives as a past life in 1912 Siberia involving sled dogs and a wolf attack—and discusses whether unresolved experiences from another lifetime could influence fears in this one.
Julie also scans a caller's friend experiencing severe vision loss and later connects intuitively with Birdie, a dog diagnosed with an intestinal tumor.
From cherubs in an operating room and the power of prayer to spirit communication, past lives, medical intuition, energetic healing, and beloved animals, this episode explores the possibility that there may be far more happening around us than we can physically see.
She Saw the Other Side—and Didn’t Want to Come Back With Connie H. Deutsch - #843
What happens after we die—and could our souls have chosen far more about this life than we realize? Psychic and intuitive counselor Connie H. Deutsch describes an extraordinary experience of being shown what she calls the “other side” while her mother was dying—and says it was so beautiful she almost didn't want to return.
Julie Ryan sits down with Connie for a fascinating conversation about death, the afterlife, reincarnation, karma, free will, divine protection, manifestation, soul purpose, and the difference between soul and spirit.
Connie shares the unusual story of discovering her intuitive abilities and explains how a childhood plea to God eventually became what she describes as a lifelong channel for spiritual guidance.
Then she recounts one of her most profound experiences: while her mother was approaching death, Connie says she was taken into an experience between lives and shown a reality so beautiful that returning to physical life became difficult. She explains what she remembers seeing and how the experience shaped her understanding of death.
Julie and Connie explore a provocative question: How much free will do we actually have? Connie describes free will as being on a “short leash,” arguing that karma and universal laws may establish boundaries around our choices while still allowing us to determine how we move through our experiences.
They also discuss reincarnation and future lives, including Connie's belief that souls experience dramatically different circumstances across lifetimes in order to grow and evolve.
Connie shares remarkable stories she interprets as divine protection, including her experience during Hurricane Andrew, and explains why unanswered prayers may sometimes represent protection rather than abandonment.
The conversation also explores manifestation, giving without expectation, the difference between helping and enabling, and how visualization may help us become clearer about what we want to create.
Can Trapped Emotions Make You Sick? With Dr. Bradley Nelson - #842
Can unresolved emotions affect how you feel physically—and could your body be holding onto emotional experiences you thought were long gone? Dr. Bradley Nelson believes what he calls “trapped emotions” can influence our physical and emotional well-being in surprising ways.
Julie Ryan sits down with bestselling author and Emotion Code creator Dr. Bradley Nelson for a fascinating conversation about the potential connection between emotions, trauma, chronic pain, depression, relationships, and the body's energy system.
Drawing from decades of his clinical and energy-healing work, Dr. Nelson explains his concept of “trapped emotions”—emotional energies that he believes can remain associated with the body after difficult or traumatic experiences. He shares how the Emotion Code is designed to identify and release these emotions and describes some of the dramatic changes his clients have reported.
Julie and Dr. Nelson explore why an experience from years or even decades ago may still feel present, how emotional patterns can influence the way we experience ourselves and our relationships, and what Dr. Nelson believes happens when those patterns are finally released.
They also discuss the Heart-Wall, Dr. Nelson's concept that accumulated emotional energy may act like a protective barrier around the heart. He explains why something that may initially feel protective could eventually interfere with emotional connection, creativity, and the ability to give and receive love.
Throughout the conversation, Dr. Nelson shares remarkable stories from his work and explains the principles behind the Emotion Code, while Julie explores how his approach intersects with energy healing and medical intuition.
If you've ever wondered why certain emotional patterns keep returning, whether your past can influence how your body feels today, or what might change if you finally released what you've been carrying, this conversation offers a provocative perspective on the mind-body connection.
Your Future Self Is Already Guiding You—Here’s How to Listen With Amy Wilkinson - #841
What if your future self—the version of you already living the life you desire—could guide you toward it now? And what if manifestation isn't about doing more, but becoming the person who is already aligned with that reality?
Julie Ryan sits down with Soul Embodiment Mentor, Manifestation Teacher, Intuitive Guide, and The Abundance Club host Amy Wilkinson for a fascinating conversation about future-self guidance, intuition, manifestation, soul purpose, and co-creating with the Divine.
Amy explains why many of the things we think we want may actually come from conditioning or ego rather than the soul. Beneath our goals, she says, are the feelings we're truly seeking—and learning to recognize those deeper desires can change the way we approach manifestation.
Then they explore one of Amy's most intriguing practices: communicating with your future self.
If you could send wisdom back to the younger version of yourself, could the future version of you offer wisdom to who you are today? Amy shares how she connects with the version of herself who is already living her desired future and uses that perspective to help close the gap between where she is and where she wants to be.
Rather than simply working harder toward a goal, Amy explains how to begin embodying the thoughts, feelings, decisions, and energy of your future self now.
Julie and Amy also explore how to distinguish intuition from ego, why your inner knowing may persist even when logic tells you something different, and what can happen when you begin treating God or the Divine as a partner in your life and work.
Amy shares the simple morning practice she uses before even opening her eyes—connecting with her highest Self and setting her energetic intention before outside influences enter the day. They also discuss synchronicities, spiritual signs, soul teams, and the surprising way kookaburras became meaningful spiritual messengers in Amy's life.
