What would be my process of introducing a fear reactive dog to a new person in their home?28 Mar 202300:04:11

When you have a dog with fear reactivity, it can be hard to know how to introduce them to people in your home.

In this episode, I answer Caicos' question from Instagram about how to introduce a fear reactive dog to a new guest in their home.

I discuss the benefits of keeping their guest informed, and then muzzle training their dog.

Breaking down the process is really important, and steps like

- Adding smells (a good trick is to take your guest's shoes off before they come over)

- Taking walks together

- Recognising where the dangers may be  makes the process a lot easier!

"Why is my 7mo dog whining? The Vet says they're healthy."14 Nov 202200:04:36

Laura asks "Why is my 7mo dog whining? The Vet says they're healthy."

Ali suggests it may be to do with hormones! That males can get antsy if there is a girl in his environment that may be in heat. That neutering may help, but will not guarantee.
It could also be habitual, i.e. a learned behaviour and suggests creating an alternative behaviour.
Also, ensure that needs are satisfied and the whining isn't making this sort of request, i.e. if they need to go out to the bathroom.
Find the pattern!
Ali also says if other dogs are whining, then a vet check should be done!

Ali explains that dogs tend to hide food they value. Explaining that this may or may not be a problem, and that in the past rescues who may not have been fed properly in the past makes them more prone to hiding or "storing" food.

What Do I Do When My Dog Reacts When I'm Out?24 Mar 202300:03:25

Today I'm answering whats.that.rattle's question about what to do when your reactive dog reacts and the situation was entirely unavoidable.

First off, I want to say that we forgive ourselves, because we are human and it is not our job to read other people's energy or body language. We are allowed to be human beings who sometimes make mistakes.

Afterwards, we walk away from the situation as quickly as possible, even if it means walking away from our pets for a bit so they won't be exposed to any possible triggers. Also, give them some down time as they'll be more likely to react whilst there is still cortisol in their system.

"How do I help my anxious dog?"12 Nov 202200:02:59

Jasmine (questions compiled because of related issue) "How do I approach my issues with leash biting, lack of ability to relax, reactivity to cats and dogs, and noise sensitivity"

Ali suggests to start with assessing enrichment status, thinking about what your dog adores and starting by giving them more of this.

Assess the stressors in your dogs life, and manage out as much as possible. (e.g. the window may require covering!)

Reactivity will begin with desensitization and counter conditioning (aka making scary things less scary, and decreasing distance to scary thing!) towards both cats and dogs.

"Why is my 9 month old is reactive towards kids and dogs?"11 Nov 202200:03:41

Tricky_pie_pie asks "Why is my 9 month old is reactive towards kids and dogs?"

Ali firstly guides not to obsess on the "why" of reactivity, because you can easily punish yourself.

First, there's Learnt behaviour, and they can learn that kids/dogs mean bad things, and so don't want them near them.

Reactivity can also be genetic, Medical issues, e.g. stomach problems, or in pain, from abuse, from a bad pregnancy from the mother, or a dozen other reasons.

But please just train and focus on their future as opposed to their past.

Ali explains that the predatory motor pattern is a thing here, that small things are less threatening and the dog may be deliberately placing themselves into a more vulnerable position.

What you can do is prepare something like a "Ready" cue, work on focus, keep your distance, and observe the predicting behaviour.
