174-MEMORIAL MONDAY- KATHY WAGNER 02 Oct 202301:20:05

A “vivid and moving memoir” that shows the “redemptive blessing of healing and compassion.” ~ Dr. Gabor Matte, Author of The Myth of Normal While we've moved away from our weekly Memorial Monday episodes, they remain a crucial essence of our mission. This week, we're honored to have Kathy Wagner, an author whose work has been recognized by the esteemed Gabor Maté. She joins us to reminisce about her son Tristan: the joys, the challenges, and the profound journey of loving someone entrenched in addiction. Navigating the heartbreak of losing her youngest at just 21 to fentanyl poisoning, Kathy offers insights and lessons that continue to guide her healing process.

171-MATT KEAGAN27 Sep 202301:13:59

Matt Keagan shares his journey with us. From scripts and partying with his parents, to prison, to sobriety, to relapse, to a recovery influencer on social media, Matt's story is one to inspire.
https://www.facebook.com/Mattkeeganrecovery

Chris Horder, aka Chuck LaFlange, transformed his life from a 25-year addiction to founding the "Ashes to Awesome" podcast. His journey, marked by estrangement and challenges, changed with his mother's affirmations of love and the loss of his father, Peter, in 2022. This loss and his mother's support catalyzed Chris's recovery and the birth of his podcast, initially a personal therapy tool, now a platform for spreading love and understanding to those battling addiction.

Despite financial struggles and reliance on family and sponsors, Chris's podcast has grown into a global movement. Key support came from the Yatra Trauma Centre in Thailand, leading to Chris's move there for treatment and financial relief. He now seeks funding for an Education Visa to continue his work in Thailand.

Dive deep with Donna, the vibrant co-host of the renowned livestream video podcast, "Hard Knox Talks" (HKT). While many of our listeners were captivated by Daniel Hearn's gripping narrative on Episode 123, it was the subtle mentions of Donna's journey that truly piqued our interest.

They aim to shed light on the complexities of addiction and to foster an environment of understanding and empathy. 162 - WEEKEND RAMBLE- AUTHOR AND PODCASTER; TODD RENNENBOHM02 Sep 202302:02:07

Todd is the host of the hit podcast. Bunny Hugs and Mental Health, and author of a children's book designed to help children understand when an adult is wrestling with mental health called, Sometimes Daddy Cries. He is an obvious empath, a man in recovery, a father, a husband,  a great guy, and a  local celebrity in his hometown where he grew up and lives, Indian Head, Saskatchewan. This was a conversation,  not an interview, and though we talked for close to 45 minutes both before and after the two-hour episode, without responsibilities to attend to, I am sure we could have talked for another 2 hours.
You can catch his podcast here:

157 - MY SONS LAST BREATH TOOK MY BREATH AWAY 21 Aug 202301:05:44

Amanda Staller is indeed a woman in recovery that walks with dignity and pride. She also recovers out loud, using her own recovery capital. She has walked the life of an addict in active, seen and been through the worst of times, and has suffered losses to the opioid epidemic, including a child and two partners, as recently as this year. Still, though, she walks with the talk, by helping others raise themselves up, and living authentically and without apology for the inspiration she is to all those lucky enough to know her.

153- BENJAMIN LERNER PART ONE15 Aug 202300:46:47

Benjamin Lerner, the Great-grandson of Irving Berlin (composer of such iconic tunes as “God Bless America” and “White Christmas”), is a Vermont-based Composer, Writer, Radio Host, and Recovery Advocate.

Benjamin started his musical career as a classical piano prodigy. By his early twenties, he was an IV heroin and crack cocaine addict. Now sober since June 13, 2016, he journals his journey in addiction and sobriety in his all new piano-raps, which combine classical piano and rap.

Benjamin credits his continued success in recovery to his ability to express his emotions relating to his struggle through word and song.

“When I first went to rehab,” Benjamin admits, “I was afraid I wasn’t going to be able to make music anymore, because I made music about doing drugs for so long, I didn’t know if I’d be able to do it without getting high.  It took getting clean for me to realize that expression and creativity are the drugs I’ve been searching for all along. I’m still a junkie. I just get high off of music now.”

Benjamin has had the pleasure of performing for the National Academy of Medicine and The Aspen Institute. In 2019, he was the composer-in-residence at 1761 Arts, and he made his Carnegie Hall debut in April 2022 as part of the Indie Collaborative.

His debut album, CLEAN, was released in February 2020. It was produced at Old Mill Road Recording in East Arlington, Vermont.

Benjamin’s weekly column, also entitled, CLEAN, is read weekly in the Vermont News Guide and was syndicated in Seven Days in 2022.

In January 2021, Benjamin started hosting CLEAN Jams on WEQX, an innovative radio program that shines a spotlight on rap, hip-hop, and recovery. CLEAN Jams is sponsored by Old Mill Road Media.

133 - MEMORIAL MONDAY - JESSIE - 26 Jun 202300:20:58

More than 100 episodes ago, for episode 18, my mother Norma, and I unbeknownst to us started what was to be the signature weekly feature of the Ashes to Awesome Podcast. She had written a post on Facebook in honor of my cousin, her niece who had been taken from us by fentanyl overdose during a relapse, after 11 months of hard work in recovery. The post went viral.

She had written it in a way that highlighted who Jessie was, and it really drove home the point that she was so much more than a statistic or how she passed. She loved and was loved.

Back then every episode was spaghetti being thrown at the wall to see what worked and what didn’t. I thought that I would read the post, but it turns out I couldn’t get through even the first couple sentences without completely breaking down. Losing Jessie hit our family very hard. Being unable to do read it myself, I asked my mom if she could, and she agreed, it happened to be a Monday. Keeping in mind at this point I Knew almost nothing about podcasting, and even less about including somebody else on the show. We recorded it via phone and the sound quality highlighted my lack of experience.

These days I am a little better at my job with close to 100k downloads and 133 episodes under my belt, so I thought I would remaster Mom’s submission and format the episode the way Memorial Mondays have evolved into now. It is still far from perfect, but it’s better, and it kicked off a campaign that I am very proud of.

Now very week starts with a Memorial Monday, and as we celebrate the person who passed, we are reminded of the realities of today, where fentanyl poisoning has made recreational drug use akin to gambling with your life, and how what used to be a really hard way to live; addiction, is now all too often a literal death sentence.

The intent is not bringing sadness to your day, but to get the attention of the masses, to let the people know who haven’t been affected by addiction, that the people dying are not junkies, they are sons, sisters, cousins, mothers, brothers, daughters, fathers, and friends who again, love and are loved. We believe firmly here at Ashes to Awesome that this is how we can effect real change in policies at all levels of government.

The format is different on a Monday than other days of the week, as it has been my intention from the second Memorial Monday on, that once the submission starts, that is all you hear until the end when the song picked by the loved one finishes the episode.
Mom’s contributions to the show didn’t stop there, as it is her that is directly responsible for daily gratitude’s, and the powerful “you are loved” monologue at the end of every single episode.
Please share these episodes with the very people you think aren’t interested. If we can get them interested, we are doing our job.

Thank you,
Chuck LaFlange

For the 130th episode, Scott is out of town. Melinda came back to fill in. We talk about how to get out of funk when sober, and not having the old standby to deal with feelings of doom and gloom, we touch on Melinda 's interesting dating life, and we decide to see whose story is funnier. This is the best two out of three series so tune in the next couple weeks to see who wins. You can vote in the comments and please do.
