Madame de Pompadour Part One06 Sep 202400:43:38

Listen to Part One of ArtMuse's episode on Madame de Pompadour, the official mistress of King Louis XV, who became the first woman of Bourgeoisie origins to ever become the King’s mistress in the French Royal Court.

And she was much more than just a mistress. As the years went on, Madame de Pompadour eventually graduated from mistress to the King’s political advisor and became involved with domestic and foreign affairs.

She was also an important patron of the arts. She was Boucher’s favorite model and can be found in nine separate portraits by him. Through her patronage, Madame de Pompadour greatly influenced and inspired the development of the Rococo style.

Virginie Amélie Gautreau23 Aug 202401:12:57

She stands, tall, in her black dress, the epitome of class, style, and grace. Suspended in time as a relic from a gilded age of the past, her effortless attitude has made her cooler than cool for well over a century. Dubbed Madame X, her identity has been clouded in mystery, only adding to her allure. But in this episode we give Madame X back her name and share her incredible life story.

Listen to ArtMuse’s episode on Virginie Amélie Gautreau, an American-born socialite who sent shock waves through Paris with her avant-garde outfits and experimental make-up. Her story traverses the Atlantic, taking us from the French Quarter of New Orleans to Paris at the height of its golden age.

In this episode, we explore her rise to celebrity status and the infamous painting that led to it all crashing down.

Anna McNeill Whistler12 Jan 202401:13:15

While Whistler's Mother has continued to captivate the imagination of viewers through the centuries, the name and story of Whistler’s real mother has been wrongfully overlooked.

Who was Whistler’s mother? And how would she have liked to be remembered?

Listen to ArtMuse’s episode on Anna McNeill Whistler, not only the mother of James McNeill Whistler, but also his artistic manager and agent. One may judge by her portrait that Anna was a stern woman who lived a simple life, but doing so would be a great injustice, for Anna was a far from ordinary woman, who lived a far from simple life.

She was Whistler’s mother, but she was also so much more.

Fillide Melandroni05 Jan 202400:43:03

Listen to ArtMuse’s episode on Fillide Melandroni. Fillide was the most consistent model that Caravaggio ever used and became an important figure in his life. She could pose as Saint Catherine one day and Judith the next, but Fillide herself was just as fierce as the biblical heroines she modeled as; a fearlessly confident prostitute with a crooked hand and gaze that could pierce as sharply as a sword.

Fillide’s appearance in Caravaggio’s works coincided with the launch of the style he is best known for: the dark and violent scenes painted with such bravado that they continue to shock viewers today. Fillide’s spirited presence in these works was just as responsible for the development of Caravaggio’s matured artistic voice as Caravaggio himself and her role in informing his artistic practice deserves recognition.

Her story includes romance, violence, murder, and exile, but most of all, it is the story of an independent woman who was able to climb the ranks of Rome’s social world and work her way from poverty to luxury, through her own hard work and personal drive.

Anna Christina Olson29 Dec 202301:00:09

Andrew Wyeth’s Christina’s World is one of the most iconic paintings in the history of American art. It was Christina’s World that turned Andrew Wyeth into a household name and claimed him one of the best American realist painters.

But who was Christina? And what kind of world did she live in?

Listen to ArtMuse’s episode on Anna Christina Olson and the world she lived out her noble life in; the small coastal town of Cushing, Maine. As a young child, Christina showed signs of an undiagnosed degenerative disease that slowly took away her mobility. While this presented unimaginable challenges, Christina never let her disability stop her from living a robust life nor compromise her unparalleled dignity and strength.

Christina’s story deserves to be honored in its entirety, beyond Wyeth and the painting that turned her into an icon. Christina was a remarkable woman in her own right, who showed extraordinary resilience in the face of continued challenges.

Dora Maar22 Dec 202301:01:56

If I were to ask you who the world’s most famous modern artist is, chances are that you would answer Pablo Picasso. But if I were to ask you who was the mastermind behind Picasso’s most revered works,

how many of you would know her name?

Listen to ArtMuse’s episode on Dora Maar. Known as the woman with a thousand faces, Picasso painted Dora Maar countless times, most famously as his Weeping Woman. What is lesser known is that many of Picasso’s greatest works, like Guernica, would have never existed without Dora’s creative genius.

Dora Maar was a Surrealist photographer and painter in her own right, whose story in its entirety deserves to be shared with the world.

It's time for Picasso's Weeping Woman to have the last laugh.

Emilie Flöge08 Dec 202300:48:32

Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss has come to embody love and romanticism. It depicts an intimate moment between a man and woman; two lovers suspended in time within a brilliant gold background, and a kiss being bestowed upon the cheek of a woman.

What many viewers may not know is that the woman in Klimt’s wondrous work is in fact a real woman from history, with her own name and story to share.

Listen to ArtMuse’s episode on Emilie Flöge, a Vienese fashion designer, independent business woman, forward thinking creative, and the most important person in Gustav Klimt’s life.

Victorine Meurent & Laure01 Dec 202300:58:32

Olympia is now celebrated as the first modernist painting. However it was not just Manet’s artistic innovation, but the presence of two identifiable women; one of the streets, and one of a newly emerging black working-class community, that made Olympia one of the most earth-shattering works ever to be created.

Listen to ArtMuse’s episode on Victorine Meurent and Laure; the two superstars of Olympia.

Victorine was not just an artist’s model, she was also a musician, and an established painter herself, who showed her work at the Salon six times.

Painted just 15 years after the abolition of territorial slavery, Laure represented a pioneering age of Paris, in which newly freed black members of society were becoming an integral part of the working class.

Arguably the world’s most famous work of art, thousands of viewers pour into the Louvre everyday to catch a glimpse of the Mona Lisa. While her image is universally recognizable, the woman behind Leonardo Da Vinci’s celebrated portrait has been largely forgotten.

Her life’s story includes romance, painful loss, scandal, mystery, and political upheaval. New Yorkers pass her sculpted image every day, but few know her name, or that her life story is one of the most riveting and tragic stories to come out of the 20th century.

Sue Tilley09 Feb 202400:56:31

In 2008, Lucian Freud’s Benefits Supervisor Sleeping broke a world record for the most expensive painting sold by a living artist. While this sale turned Freud into a household name, the woman featured in Freud’s painting has been unjustly overlooked as an integral part of what makes the work so remarkable.

In this ArtMuse episode, we give Sue her rightful dues in our appreciation of Freud’s famed work. But Sue has lived a robust and adventure-filled life outside of her role as Lucian Freud’s model. Though a benefits supervisor by day, Sue was a club girl by night, and could be found in London’s most notorious nightclubs of the 1980’s, alongside icons like Boy George, and was at the heart of London’s New Romantic movement.

The time is far overdue for Sue’s riveting life story to be shared, and for us to be lucky enough to experience a small fraction of the magic that is Sue Tilley.

Gala Dali Part Two26 Jan 202400:58:39

In Part One we explored Gala’s childhood, how she met her first husband Paul Eluard and traveled alone through Europe in the midst of World War I to be with him, their marriage and later menage-a-trois relationship with Max Ernst, and finally the fateful meeting of Gala and Dali.

Part Two picks back up on Gala's story and honors Gala's complex legacy. Whether critical of Gala’s behavior or not, one cannot deny that she was a force to be reckoned with. Gala knew the life she wanted to live, and was unwilling to let her size, gender, two world wars, and any force opposing her, get in her way.

Gala Dali Part One19 Jan 202400:39:49

Behind every great man, is an even greater woman, and this sentiment couldn’t be more true than in the case of Salvador Dali. Hidden in the shadows of Dali’s massive legacy, is the woman who can be credited with making Dali a household name and one of the strongest forces of nature to ever walk this earth.

Gala was the the wife and companion of Salvador Dali for over 50 years, who not only inspired Dali’s greatest works (many of which feature her image), but managed Dali’s entire career, brokering his biggest deals and elevating him from an unknown and impoverished young artist to celebrity status.

Luisa Casati Part One15 Nov 202401:03:06

She could be seen strutting through Venice in the dark of night, with nothing but a fur coat on, as she walked her two pet cheetahs. Once described “as beautiful as a black panther, and also as dangerous”, this mysterious woman was one of the wealthiest and most outlandish characters in all of the 20th century.

In this episode we share the incredible life story of the Marchesa Luisa Casati, an Italian heiress who used her fortune to create a life of her wildest imagination. She was also one of the most important patrons of her time. She was painted by Giovanni Boldini, photographed by Man Ray, and sculpted by Jacob Epstein. It’s believed that Luisa commissioned over two hundred separate portraits of herself, with the aim to “commission her immortality”.

Luisa Casati Part Two29 Nov 202400:54:54

Listen to Part Two of ArtMuse's episode on Luisa Casati. In this episode, we honor Luisa's immense life and give her the recognition she deserves. There are few other figures in history who lived as authentically, inspired as much genius, and had such avant-garde visions of fashion, design, and self-image as Luisa Casati. She set trends and elicited awe everywhere she went. As author Scot Ryersson wrote, “The Marchesa Luisa Casati was more than just an eccentric flame from another age. In spite of her many follies, she was a genuine innovator of the arts and an inspiration to creative genius”. Luisa was an undeniable force of nature, and her name and story deserve its place in history.

Madame Juliette Récamier Part One11 Apr 202501:09:13
Her portrait by David is one of the most iconic paintings in the Louvre’s entire collection, and attracts millions of viewers each year. As she reclines on her sofa, a sofa she popularized so much that it now bears her name, she teases us with her curly hair, rosy cheeks, and inscrutable smile. Though her image has been reproduced in countless mediums across the globe, few know that she was one of the most remarkable women of the nineteenth century, and inspired the greatest artists, writers, intellects, and politicians of her day, with not only her unrivaled beauty but with the goodness of her heart. In this episode of ArtMuse, we share the immense life story of Madame Juliette Récamier, a French socialite and famed beauty, affectionately dubbed the “darling of Europe”. In fact, her looks were so enchanting, that she drove some of the most powerful men of all of history wild with desire, including Napoleon Bonaparte, his brother Lucien, and the Prince of Prussia. Many thanks to Erin Greenhouse, who pours her heart into mixing the episodes with such mastery, and choosing the perfect music to accompany the stories. Her production company, Kula, is phenomenal, and if there are any other podcasters listening that are looking for help with production, I cannot recommend her enough. I also want to thank her assistant, Hannah Jocelyn, who has not only helped with vocal edits but created original music for our episodes on Edie Sedgwick. I’d like to thank my dear friend Roxanne Quilty for making the ArtMuse logos, and my wonderful family, husband, and dog for always supporting me. And most of all, I want to thank you, my listeners, for your continued encouragement and support. It has been such a pleasure hearing from so many of you, and we always encourage listeners to be in touch with thoughts, reactions, and suggestions through our website and Instagram.

ArtMuse ArtTalks: Host Grace Anna Interviews NYT Best Selling Author B.A. Shapiro30 May 202500:52:55

B.A. Shapiro's The Lost Masterpiece can be preordered on Amazon HERE.

Berthe Morisot was a female Impressionist painter active in Paris during the second half of the 19th century. She exhibited her work alongside famed Impressionist artists Monet, Degas, and Renoir, among others, and was the only woman to be included in the first major show of Impressionist art in 1874. Despite the many limitations she faced as a female artist of her time, Morisot established herself as an integral member of the Impressionist group. She also modeled for a number of paintings by Manet, and though she was married to his brother, many believe that Manet and Morisot were engaged in a long-run secret affair.

B.A. Shapiro is a New York Times best selling author. In 2013, she was awarded the New England Book Award for Fiction for her novel, The Art Forger. Over her impressive career as an author, she has written both novels and screenplays, as well as a non-fiction self help book.

ArtMuse ArtTalks: Host Grace Anna Interviews Author Mark Braude15 Aug 202500:57:04

Kiki Man Ray: Art, Love and Rivalry in 1920’s Paris can be ordered online HERE.

Mark Braude is the author of three non-fiction books, Kiki Man Ray being his third. He has been a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar, a visiting fellow at the American Library in Paris, and a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University. He is currently based in Vancouver, Canada, where he lives with his family.

For those who haven’t yet listened to our episode on Kiki de Montparnasse, Kiki was an artist’s model, performer, painter, actress, and memoirist active in Paris during the roaring twenties. Over her lifetime Kiki became one of the most prolific art models in the history of western art, modeling for many of the best painters of her day, as well as the photographer Man Ray, with whom she shared an eight-year long relationship with. Over the course of their affair, Man Ray took hundreds of photographs of Kiki. Kiki played an integral role in the creation of each of these works, co-collaborating on them with Man Ray, despite receiving no official credit.

But Kiki was far more than just Man Ray’s muse. She was also an artist in her own right, and her creativity took many forms. Kiki was an accomplished painter, cabaret performer, and published her own autobiography when she was only twenty-eight years old. Though Kiki de Montparnasse fell into relative obscurity after her death, she deserves to be remembered as the visionary and independent woman she was; a woman who inspired masterpieces by the greatest artists of her age, who painted with unrestrained expression and sang with bravado, whose memoir gained international recognition, and whose free spirit came to symbolize an entire era of European history.

ArtMuse ArtTalks: Host Grace Anna Interviews Author Paula Byrne26 Sep 202500:50:21

You can purchase Bryne’s biography on Dido Elizabeth Belle HERE.

You can purchase Bryne’s biography on Mary Robinson HERE.

You can purchase Byrne’s latest novel, Six Weeks by the Sea, HERE.

Paula Bryne is a British author and literary critic. She has written several acclaimed and best-selling biographies, including her biographies on Dido Elizabeth Belle, Mary Robinson, and Jane Austen. She is also the founder and Chief Executive of ReLit, a charity dedicated to promoting literature for mental health.

If you have not yet listened to ArtMuse’s two part episode on Dido Elizabeth Belle, which shares her full life-story, then we encourage you to listen as an accompanying episode to this interview. Season Three of ArtMuse, which explores the life-stories of artist models who were also performers in their own right, will kick off with a two part episode on Mary Robinson. This interview with Paula Byrne, which deep dives into Mary Robinson’s story, is the perfect teaser to ArtMuse's Season Three opener.

Dido Elizabeth Belle is considered to be England’s first female aristocrat of color. Dido was born to an enslaved mother and white father. As a child, she was brought from the Caribbean to England, and taken in by her great uncle, Lord Mansfield, who happened to be the most powerful judge in all of England. Dido was thus raised in his home, at Kenwood House, which today is a historical house and museum. As a judge, Lord Mansfield ruled over many important cases pertaining to slavery, and it is believed that Dido’s presence in his home influenced his sympathetic rulings that eventually paved the way for abolition in England. Dido was famously captured in a portrait by David Martin, a copy of which today hangs at Kenwood House in honor of her.

Mary Robinson was an 18th century British actress, poet, writer, activist, and intellectual. During her days as a leading actress on Drury Lane, Mary famously caught the eye of the Prince of Wales, whom she had an affair with. Later in life, after a tragic accident that took away her ability to walk, Mary Robinson shifted courses, and became a prolific writer. In her long writing career, Mary wrote several novels, collections of poems, plays, and published essays. Much of her writing was radical by nature and advocated for both women’s rights and the abolition of slavery. In her lifetime, Mary was painted by the renowned portraitists Sir Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, George Romney, and John Hoppner.
