#9: Building Your Kit: Practical Tips For Professional Artists
mardi 30 avril 2024 • Duration 29:29
I am going through the process of renovating and rebuilding my kit and I wanted to chat about what it really means to build a pro MUA kit.
Key Takeaways from this episode:
- Functionality is Key: Your kit should be adapted to suit your current client roster and job demands.
- Appearance Matters: Your kit speaks volumes about who you are and what you bring to the table. Keep it clean, organized, and stocked with recognizable brands that customers can identify. All of your clients will look at your kit and judge your capability as an artist based on what they see.
- Prioritize cost-effectiveness. Especially in the early stages of your career. It can be hard to turn down a Sephora sale, but it will be essential to the growth of your business to spend only on what is necessary.
- Continuously assess and adjust your kit based on what works and what doesn't. Focus on functionality and problem-solving rather than following trends or social media hype.
- Responsibilities of a Pro MUA: It is your responsibility to show up to your jobs prepared and capable of working on any skin tone.

Great content starts with great lighting and in this episode I mention my favourite lighting for content creation comes from The Makeup Light. You can shop TML here and use code ANGIEDIB to save 15% if you don't currently qualify for a pro discount. I have the Key Light 2.0 Master Kit, if that's not in the budget - a single panel with a stand (Key Light 2.0 Starter Kit) is more than enough lighting.

#2: What To Expect In Your First 5 Years As A MUA
mardi 5 mars 2024 • Duration 23:34
The first 5 years are tough but if I could do it all again there would be a few things I would do differently in order to make good investments with my time and money. In this episode I will review the pillars of success in makeup artistry which are the 4 areas of your business you will have to work on consistently to build your career (Technique, Service, Network and Brand).
I'll be going over 10 things you can do to make your first few years as an MUA easier, they are:
- Mastering the fundamentals, like hygiene and colour theory.
- Getting familiar with the products in your kit to ensure you aren't losing money.
- Practicing as much as you can.
- Taking photos/videos of each application to track your progress (it's always progress over perfection).
- Aligning yourself with people who are better and more experienced than you are.
- Meeting as many different people as you can in the industry through targeted networking.
- Participating in tfp's/creatives that align with your business goals.
- Only agreeing to free work/creatives when there is a fully formed concept. (You should be limiting free 'work' but get involved in as many tfp's as you can)
- Making mood boards to keep you on track.
- Scheduling what you need to do to work on your business each day/week.
