Frankenstein's First Musical Playing With Fire From NSYNC's JC Chasez And Jimmy Harry31 Oct 202400:10:20
Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and producer, JC Chasez, and Golden Globe winning songwriter, producer and composer Jimmy Harry announce their groundbreaking new musical theater concept album, Playing With Fire. Inspired by Mary Shelly's timeless novel Frankenstein, Playing with Fire marks Chasez's first major musical theater recording project. Chasez is also featured as a vocalist alongside singers Cardamon Rozzi and Lily Elise. The project comes on the heels of an exciting year for both Chasez and Harry respectively, following the highly anticipated *NSYNC reunion on the Trolls Band Together soundtrack where Chasez lent his vocals on the group's first song in two decades, "Better Place," and Harry's recent work writing and producing "Take Me Back To The Party," the latest single from B-52's founding member Kate Pierson. Harry has previously worked with legends such as Madonna, Pink, Britney Spears, Diplo, Kelly Clarkson, Weezer and more. Chasez made a surprise appearance at this year's Elsie Fest and joined festival host creator Darren Criss on stage where the project was announced.Featuring a collection of 16 original new tracks, Playing With Fire first came to fruition when Harry presented Chasez the script of his late mother's (Barbara Field) theatrical adaptation of Shelley's prescient sci-fi story. Chasez was immediately intrigued with the play, and work on it immediately began, creating a heartfelt story of timely technological issues, love, responsibility, revenge, loss, and the human condition. This reimagining of the classic tale constructs a conversation between Frankenstein and his creation, The Creature, at the grave of Frankenstein's wife, Elizabeth, ten years after her death. Through dynamic interplay of dialogue and shared flashbacks of key events in both their lives, the concept album plunges into the heart of their intertwined destinies. As they confront their past actions and the devastating impact they've had on one another, Frankenstein and The Creature gradually find understanding, sympathy, and forgiveness. Chasez and Harry were drawn not only to the thought-provoking technological themes in Shelly's novel, but also to the emotional depth that Field's adaptation brought to the story. It was as if they discovered an untapped perspective on a literary classic that they could illustrate with music. This gripping story is accompanied by dark brooding songs that blend Electronic pop juxtaposed against classical music from the romantic era, forming a captivating symphony of contrasts that reflect the characters own internal conflicts. "When we first discussed creating a musical inspired by Frankenstein, obvious topics such as technology, A.G.I., monsters, immortality and death came up. However, when we began the process of writing the songs, we couldn't help but lean into topics dealing with familial relationships, love, deceit, and denial. In the end, we flipped the technological beast on its side to reveal that, in spite of all its benefits and horrors it creates, it changes nothing about our basic humanity."

Her Story Edith Lemay And Documented By Director Edmund Stenson Blink On Disney+ And Natl Geo03 Oct 202400:05:36
Edith Lemay and Sébastien Pelletier first noticed their daughter, Mia, was having vision problems when she was 3 years old. The diagnosis took years to pinpoint but, by the time Mia was 7, they had identified it as retinitis pigmentosa, a rare genetic condition that causes a loss or decline in vision over time. It skipped their second child, Léo, but both their younger sons, Colin and Laurent, received the same diagnosis. The three children will ultimately lose their eyesight entirely. When The school’s vision impairment advisor suggested they fill the children’s visual memory by looking at pictures in books, Edith thought, ‘I’m not going to show her an elephant in a book; I’m going to take her to see a real elephant…And I’m going to fill her memory with the best, most beautiful images I can.”

That’s the subject of the beautiful new documentary film BLINK arriving in theaters October 4. As the Canadian-based family began making plans to spend a year traveling around the globe, they canvassed the children’s opinions on what they wanted to do – which included swimming with dolphins, horseback riding in Mongolia and watching the sunrise from a mountain -- the bucket list became the family’s North Star.

As a former resort activity coordinator, Edith Lemay has no shortage of ideas to entertain her little troupe. She is passionate about sunsets and water sports, particularly scuba diving. During the trip, Edith was responsible for the luggage, schooling, meals, and social media. She is rarely seen in photos because she is always behind the camera and will publish a forthcoming book in French about their adventure.

Edmund Stenson’s work as director, producer and editor spans both documentary and fiction and focuses on social issues, loners and nomads. Before directing BLINK, he was an associate editor on the BAFTA- and Oscar®-winner Navalny, a documentary-thriller about the Russian dissident’s poisoning.

Novelist And Ballet Dancer Lucy Ashe Recreates The Story Of Sleeping Beauty In The Sleeping Beauties29 Sep 202400:11:54
The book focusses on the history of the Royal Opera House and the Sadler's Wells company during the Second World War. The dramatic climax of the novel is set ahead of the first performance of the 1946 Sleeping Beauty. In 1945 London, the war in Europe is over. But for Briar Woods, a dancer at Sadler’s Wells Ballet, the past resurfaces and brings her face to face with the truth – and now, it feels as though her war has only just begun.  Since 1939, Rosamund Caradon had taken in many children from Britain’s bombarded cities, sheltering them in her Devonshire manor. Now, with Germany’s surrender, she is en route to London to return the last evacuees, accompanied by her dance-obsessed daughter Jasmine. Rosamund vows to protect Jasmine from any peril, but a chance meeting with a Sadler’s Wells dancer changes everything. When the beautiful, elusive Briar Woods bursts into Rosamund’s train carriage, it’s clear her sights are set on the captivated Jasmine. As Briar sets out to charm them both, Rosamund cannot shake the eerie feeling this accidental encounter isn’t what it seems. While Briar may be far away from the pointe shoes and greasepaint of The Sleeping Beauty ballet rehearsals, her performance for Rosamund might just be her most successful yet. A dance that could turn deadly . . .

Culture Writer And Reporter Ashley Spencer Disney High The Untold Story28 Sep 202400:17:24
The first unauthorized look at the inner workings-and ultimate breakdown-of the Disney Channel machine. For many kids growing up in the 2000s, there was no cultural touchstone more powerful than Disney Channel, the most-watched cable channel in primetime at its peak. Today, it might best be known for introducing the world to talents like Hilary Duff, Raven-Symoné, Zac Efron, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, the Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato, and Zendaya. It wasn't always destined for greatness: when The Disney Channel launched in 1983, it was a forgotten stepchild within the Walt Disney Company, forever in the shadow of Disney's more profitable movies and theme parks. But after letting the stars of their Mickey Mouse Club revival-among them Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, and Ryan Gosling-slip through their fingers, Disney Channel reinvented itself as a powerhouse tween network. In the new millennium, it churned out billions of dollars in original content and triple-threat stars whose careers were almost entirely controlled by the corporation. Suddenly, everyone wanted a piece of the pie-and there were constant clashes between the studio, network, labels, and creatives as Disney Channel became a pressure cooker of perfection for its stars. From private feuds and on-set disasters, to fanfare that swept the nation and the realities of child stardom, culture journalist Ashley Spencer offers the inside story of the heyday of TV's House of Mouse, featuring hundreds of exclusive new interviews with former Disney executives, creatives, and celebrities to explore the highs, lows, and everything in between.

Hollywood Historians Craig Singer And Michael Benson Release Moguls Nicholas And Joseph Schenek27 Sep 202400:17:17
Film lovers have long heard of the legendary names that built Hollywood into a global entertainment empire - Goldwyn, Mankiewicz, Laemmle, Mayer, Loews. But it was The Schenck Brothers, a ruthless pair of Bowery boys, who worked their way up to launch the Hollywood studio system, creating a lasting legacy of 'star maker machinery" while simultaneously breaking all the business rules. MOGULS: The Lives and Times of Film Pioneers Nicholas and Joseph Schenck (Sept. 24, 2024) is co-authored by Producers Guild of America member and film director Craig Singer, and Brooklyn-based writer Michael Benson (Gangsters vs. Nazis). MOGULS is a noirish, incredible Hollywood history. The Schenck brothers held controlling interests in three major studios: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Twentieth Century-Fox, and United Artists (UA). But chances are you've never heard of them because they preferred to run their global empire behind closed doors. Nick was Louis B. Mayer's boss. Think Mank meets Chinatown and LA Confidential, with a heaping dose of Hail, Caesar! and The Godfather II (of course). Twice as powerful as the Warner Brothers, the Schencks were immigrants who quietly ran Hollywood out of the spotlight, bringing film into a world of blazing color. They were as American as jazz and baseball, as flashy as Gatsby, as cunning as gangsters, who controlled a third of the motion picture industry at their height - and were some of the richest men in America.

Director Editor And Music Historian Simon Hilton Releases The John Lennon Story Mind Games27 Sep 202400:19:14
The definitive exploration-told in revelatory detail-of the writing, recording, and release of John Lennon's celebrated and magical fourth solo album Mind Games, and the era that inspired it.Described by Yoko Ono as "ahead of its time," Mind Games is a breakthrough album from John Lennon in which he employs a Plastic Ono Band comprising the cream of the crop of New York session musicians-a fan favorite that remains a cult classic ever since its first release on October 29, 1973. This insightful and beautiful book presents handwritten lyrics, letters, artworks by Lennon and Ono, and previously unseen photography alongside their firsthand commentary about the lyrics, songs, and album artwork, as well as contributions from the musicians, friends, engineers, and key figures involved in the making of this landmark album. Mind Games was the product of an exceptionally turbulent time for the Lennons. While Nixon and Hoover were attempting to have Lennon deported, John and Yoko endured endless litigations and as the popular press turned on them once again, they bravely rose above it all, continuing their campaigns for non-violent peaceful protest to end the war in Vietnam and for equal rights for women. It was also an exciting time when they both re-embraced mysticism and magical thinking. In this sumptuous volume, text and images from the key players are woven together to reveal not only the details behind the creation, recording, and release of this groundbreaking commercial and skillfully crafted recording, but also to shed new light on a period of transformation and experimentation for Lennon and Ono.

At The Age 88 Don Johnston Has Released His 4th Novel By Means Of Peace26 Sep 202400:18:52
The country is very divided and many people only operate within their insulated bubbles. Conspiracy theories abound. Chronic enemies like Russia and China threaten global stability. Freedom of speech is under scrutiny while books are disappearing under the encouragement of the government. Many are fed up with the two-party system and a serious exploration of running a third-party candidate for president is taking place. Though this sounds like today, it is an America depicted in By Means of Peace, a semi-prophetic, thrilling, dystopian novel set in 2148.

A Medical Professor At Over 25 Schools Dr Marty Makary Releases Blind Spots25 Sep 202400:09:44
From Johns Hopkins medical expert Dr. Marty Makary, the New York Times-bestselling author of The Price We Pay-an eye-opening look at the medical groupthink that has led to public harm, and what you need to know about your health. More Americans have peanut allergies today than at any point in history. Why? In 2000, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a strict recommendation that parents avoid giving their children peanut products until they're three years old. Getting the science perfectly backward, triggering intolerance with lack of early exposure, the US now leads the world in peanut allergies-and this misinformation is still rearing its head today. How could the experts have gotten it so wrong? Dr. Marty Makary asks, Could it be that many modern-day health crises have been caused by the hubris of the medical establishment? Experts said for decades that opioids were not addictive, igniting the opioid crisis. They refused menopausal women hormone replacement therapy, causing unnecessary suffering. They demonized natural fat in foods, driving Americans to processed carbohydrates as obesity rates soared. They told citizens that there are no downsides to antibiotics and prescribed them liberally, causing a drug-resistant bacteria crisis. When modern medicine issues recommendations based on good scientific studies, it shines. Conversely, when modern medicine is interpreted through the harsh lens of opinion and edict, it can mold beliefs that harm patients and stunt research for decades. In Blind Spots, Dr. Makary explores the latest research on critical topics ranging from the microbiome to childbirth to nutrition and longevity and more, revealing the biggest blind spots of modern medicine and tackling the most urgent yet unsung issues in our $4.5 trillion health care ecosystem. What Jewish Looks Like From Liz Kleinrock And Caroline Kusin Pritchard24 Sep 202400:10:17
Compiled acclaimed anti-racist educator Liz Kleinrock and celebrated author Caroline Kusin Pritchard, and illustrated by Iris Gottlieb, WHAT JEWISH LOOKS LIKE is a powerful intersectional anthology celebrating thirty-six Jewish heroes—from Tracee Ellis Ross, and Victor Perez, to Doña Gracia Nasi. A first-ever collection that disrupts the narrative of how a Jewish person is perceived! Too many Jews have been told: "You don't look Jewish!" It begs the question, "What does Jewish look like?" Well, there are over fifteen million Jews in the world, which means there are more than fifteen million ways to look and be Jewish. It can look like setting out menorahs on tribal land, adding kimchi to the seder plate, organizing for change, and living out loud. Shining a light on Paralympians and chefs, anthropologists and activists, dancers and dreamers, the individuals in these pages represent a range of identities. But they are threaded together by one unmistakable truth: Their lives, work, and commitment to Jewish values have changed our world for the better. These bold profiles and inspiring everyday stories come together to create a tapestry that beautifully reflects the multifaceted essence of the Jewish people.

The Monkees Premiered On TV In September 1966 Historian Scott G Shea Recaps The Impact23 Sep 202400:11:13
On September 12, 1966, at 7:30pm ET, the Monkees television sitcom debuted on NBC and, overnight, a manufactured television rock and roll group was beamed into American living rooms and onto the pop culture scene. Known affectionately, or disparagingly, depending on your point-of-view, as a "manufactured image with no philosophies," the Monkees supplemented their TV stardom with nearly a dozen actual hits on the pop charts and became a sensation to mostly pre-drivers license teenagers and adolescents. Author and music historian Scott Shea believes that this talented musical foursome was the real deal, that their music continues to have broad appeal and rode all the trends of the mid-to-late 1960s rock scene. They even elicited a few. In his recent article for the Strange Brew, Scott makes the case of why the Monkees should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The Electoral College American Historian Carolyn Renee Dupont Releases Destorting Democracy22 Sep 202400:17:57
The complicated history of how America elects presidents and why this matters to the next election. An engaging mix of history and political science, Distorting Democracy will awaken Americans to the perils of our system by unveiling the Electoral College's origins, history, and current problems. This book demonstrates that the system has no principled foundation, that it has changed dramatically over its 230-year history, and that it now threatens the legitimacy of our political system. The book is divided into three ground-breaking sections: Part I tells the story of the Electoral College's origins in the Constitutional Convention. Defenders of the Electoral College tend to invoke gauzy images of the Founding Fathers infusing our system with their unique, timeless wisdom. But history tells a very different story. The Founding Fathers faced a mess; they responded by creating a mess. Part II traces two hundred years of innovations-many of them subtle but highly consequential-to the plan described in the Constitution. As the new nation rapidly descended into bitter political conflict, many of the framers themselves, driven by their partisan interests, massaged the Electoral College into a form that differed profoundly from their founding intentions. Subsequent generations tinkered similarly with the systems' possibilities, always exploiting its potential for political gain. Part III examines how our strange presidential election system has produced frustrating results with increasing frequency in recent elections. Who can forget the Bush-Gore contest of 2000, when the results hinged on "hanging chads" and fewer than 1,500 votes in Florida? Americans endured weeks of a single-state recount, only to have the Supreme Court halt the process and hand the election to George W. Bush. Bush won the Electoral College by a single vote, but Al Gore captured 500,000 more popular votes. Then, in 2016, Donald Trump stunned the world with a substantial Electoral College victory of 302-227, though nearly 3 million more Americans preferred his opponent, and roughly 7 million voted for a third-party candidate. The system increasingly returns results that conflict with the expressed wishes of a majority of voters, a product of our hyper-polarized landscape and unique geopolitical distribution of party loyalists. The system cannot improve until we learn the complicated history of the Electoral College and the lessons it holds for us today. "Every American should read this book. It brings facts and clarity to a debate that too often relies on conjecture about the Electoral College's purposes and ill-informed arguments about how it actually operates. The lessons herein are immense." -- Joshua A. Douglas, Ashland, Inc-Spears Distinguished Research Professor of Law, University of Kentucky

Unbound From Salem's Childe Bassist James Gates Breaks It Down19 Sep 202400:16:31
The second record from Salem’s Childe, Unbound, showcases the band’s growth as songwriters and musicians from 2020’s The Sin That Saves You. From the fast-paced tension of opener “Closer to the Bone” to anthems like “Rise & Conquer” and the closing beefed up and energetic take on The Cult’s classic “She Sells Sanctuary,” the nine-song record takes the listener on a lyrical and melodic journey that maintains the band’s aggressive accessibility while pushing boundaries and inviting engagement.

Since its inception, Salem’s Childe has defined and redefined itself musically, while following one rule: taking the best of what they love from their diverse influences and forging them into something that reflects those influences without trying to sound like them. The result is a hard-hitting and energetic genre-defying mix of melody and aggression that finds itself as equally at home in the mainstream as it does the underground.

In 2020, the band released its debut full-length album, The Sin That Saves You, through Pavement Entertainment, following that up the next spring with a well-received cover of Sponge’s iconic radio anthem “Plowed.” In 2024 the band finished and released its second record, Unbound. From appearances at events such as Milwaukee Metal Fest to storming their way across the US while supporting Misfits legend, Doyle, the Indiana-based band is no stranger to the national stage and will soon be announcing upcoming tours in the fall of 2024 and winter of 2025 in support of the new record.
