| Call to Action for the Next RIBA President - Meet our Candidates in the Hustings! | 21 Apr 2022 | 01:27:22 | |
Call to Action: The next RIBA President needs to be representative of its members! Time for the first worker at the helm. Earlier in the month we put out our Call to Action with an open letter and a form where Architecture workers could nominate themselves to run as part of our campaign. Well good news, we have four candidates who are working in the Architecture Industry. These people are not company owners, they have worked themselves up like YOU and are full of ambition. Hannah Deacon: Everyday is a constant battle to convince clients and consultants that zero carbon construction is essential instead of a 'nice to have'. This is exacerbated when challenged on my authority and experience as a young woman in a patriarchal elitist environment. My primary action as President would be to enact real change by making the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge mandatory and strip practices of their chartership if they are not showing real commitment to reducing climate change. Benjamin Champion: In the wider industry, he’s known for presenting at Practice Clinics focused on EDI leadership and participating in panels, events, and radio programmes on behalf of RIBA. Also, a regular contributor to the next generation of architects as an Ambassador for the Mayor of London: Design Future London challenge. Muyiwa is also co-founder of a design-tech venture called Modulor, focused on making Digital Twins of spaces affordable. Henry is a Principal Sustainability Consultant at Max Fordham LLP, an employee-owned environmental design practice. Henry is RIBA chartered architect and was the Youth Commissioner for Sustainable Development on the RIBA Ethics and Sustainable Development Commission. He is intent on putting all the recommendations of the commission into action. 📐 The Architecture Social is an online platform packed with content to help you find new jobs, stand out from the crowd and take your career in Architecture to the next level 💻 Find out more at https://architecturesocial.com

We often learn about practices when we see their projects in Architecture Magazines, or when we are looking for a new job we often judge a company by what we can see on their website. Either the founders who set it up or people who actually work on the frontline as part of the team. So to kick off this idea, I can think of no one better than the charismatic and ambitious Oliver Lowrie, the founder of the emergent award-winning practice called Ackroyd Lowrie. Join me live on Wednesday at 1 pm to discuss with Oliver what it's like to work at Ackroyd Lowrie, understand the principles behind why the practice was created and cultural values that are important in the office. | Hamza Shaikh - Discussing the Next Generation of Architects | 17 Nov 2021 | 00:56:33
There's been so much going on lately in the world of Architecture. Working remotely in professional practice is no longer impossible to implement and hybrid working is arguably here to stay. At the same time, communication and content creation online within Architecture has evolved at a rapid pace. Earlier in the year FAF (Future Architects Front) raised awareness of the ongoing woes and realities of entering the Architecture profession from a student to becoming a young professional. Lately in the news, there is a reshuffle within the RIBA headquarters. It's been a strange two years, however, I don't see us going back. Is this now the new normal? Given all that's going on, who are the next generation of Architects and what does that look like to be part of it? This Wednesday at 1pm I am joined by the awesome Hamza Shaikh, trailblazer Architect in the making and content creator of the Two Worlds Design podcast as well as his exponentially growing Youtube Channel where we will discuss LIVE the next generation of Architects. 📐 The Architecture Social is an online platform packed with content to help you find new jobs, stand out from the crowd and take your career in Architecture to the next level 💻 Find out more at https://architecturesocial.com
| Scott MacTavish - Becoming an Architect, Surely there are easier ways to make money? | 07 Nov 2021 | 01:00:56 | |
In 2005, Scott Mactavish moved away from mainstream Architecture and joined an architectural recruitment company in London, recruiting Architects at all levels for the local market. This is as fate happens we met, as when I went into recruitment leaving Architecture, Scott was one of my Directors! Join us for a rough and ready episode late into the evening, battling technology, to have a no holds barred conversation about the Architecture profession and the underbelly of the recruitment industry. Scott studied his Masters in Architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture and his BA Architecture degree at Manchester University. His professional industry experience spans education, commercial and residential sectors, gained at award winning design practices including CRTKL, Austin Smith Lord and Sheppard Robson. Scott has also worked as a tutor at the Bartlett during his Masters. In 2005, he moved away from mainstream Architecture and joined an architectural recruitment company in London, recruiting Architects at all levels for the local market. After living in Australia for a short while and a 2 year stint as a Director for a small agency in London, Scott moved to New York in 2015 to shake things up and set up an office. He now identifies as a true New Yorker beeping in traffic and rushing around (pre-pandemic at least) with a pumpkin spiced latte in hand during the fall (aka autumn). Scott's professional experience includes working for Clients such as BP, Royal Bank of Scotland and Manchester University. Scott also worked in Melbourne for a couple of years working as an architect for the Buchan Group, specifically working on the Star City Casino in Sydney. Scott can advise on what employers look for in a potential candidate, noting the subtle transatlantic differences as well as advise on portfolio compilation and interview techniques. Over the years Scott's Clients have included Zaha Hadid Architects, Rogers Stirk Harbor, KPF and SOM. Although now based in Brooklyn, Scott tries to get back to Europe as often as possible (pandemic permitting!) combining his love of travel with his work where possible. Recently however, Scott has picked back up his love of skiing; exploring the delights of up-state New York and living proof that skiing is really like riding a bike - you never forget! | Discussing Architecture Communities on the Young Architect's Podcast | 03 Nov 2021 | 00:51:41
Midst July after hosting a room on Clubhouse I was invited to join Michael Riscica on his podcast to talk about life, the Architecture Industry and building the Architecture Social. Here is the description from the episode: Some people take a long and winding route to realize that architecture is the field for them. Stephen Drew is not one of them. He always knew that he wanted to be an architect. He did temporarily entertain the idea of becoming a doctor, but his love for drawing and designing won out. Even his friends always assumed that he would become an architect. Stephen was passionate about graphic design and geography, which is an unusual combination. He went to the University of Westminster – that was his first time in London. He graduated into the global economic crisis and was worried about finding a job. Encouraged by a friend (who is now a famous You Tuber), he sent out a large number of CVs and ended up landing a job in a top firm as his first job. In today’s episode, Stephen talks about his experience working in recruiting for architecture firms. He explains what architects need to understand about recruiters and also talks about the ins and outs of finding a job as an architect. Stephen also discusses the project that he started during the pandemic, Architecture Social. He explains what it is, how it started, and why it’s interesting to young architects. Listen in to hear Stephen’s thoughts on the word community, what he thinks about the Clubhouse app, and his advice for architects applying for jobs. What You’ll Hear on This Episode:
Top Three Takeaways from This Episode:

| Benjamin Champion - Slaying Dragons, Running for the RIBA Council and discussing a little bit of Architecture. | 27 Jul 2021 | 00:53:29 | |
I am thrilled to kickstart our second season (woohoo!) of the Architecture Social's podcast with a resident host of the Architecture Social's community forum, Benjamin Champion. While Ben is a fantastic Architect at Sheehan Nagle Hartray Associates, he also happens to be a technology enthusiast and the gamemaster of our Dungeon and Dragons group on the Architecture Social. Join Ben and me in a no-holds-barred conversation about everything and anything as well as his motives to run for the RIBA Council. This was fun, let me know your thoughts and also do check out Ben's election statement over on RIBA: "I am a newly qualified architect. Over the past eight years I have worked in small villages, in London, and abroad. I have seen the ways architects are viewed by a range of clients and by varying cross sections of the public - which is not always positive. The recent uproar on behalf of architectural assistants demonstrates that this perception is not restricted to those outside the profession. A common topic I have noticed in conversations with other young architects over the past sixth months is a frustration with the apparent impotence of the profession to influence the outcome of a building. It is my intention during my time on the council to work towards linking architects with the general public by providing a more public-facing aspect of the profession to de-mystify the process of engaging an architect. The frustration with the structure of our education and the position of architectural assistants resonated with my own experience and has prompted me to try and provide a young professional voice to the council. There is a clear wish for change, which the current council is admirably and successfully addressing, and I have a strong desire to contribute." | Stephen Glands, Director at Macdonald & Company | 14 Jun 2021 | 00:32:14
On this week's episode of the Architecture Social Podcast, my guest is the fantastic Stephen Glands who is Director of the Architecture Team at the recruitment consultancy Macdonald & Company. Stephen and I both worked together for over three years, the perception of a recruitment consultant is not always glowing - however, I admired Stephen Glands' candid and helpful approach to finding the right position for people mid-career onwards. In our conversation, Stephen shares valuable insight into the traits and techniques he has seen successful people use that have gone onto successful careers as well as what it takes to rise above adversity. Stephen Glands's Biography "Hello! I've been recruiting in the design and development space since 2000. Does that make me 'old and wise' in recruitment terms? You decide! I’d hope that at the very least it means I know what I am talking about. I am fortunate enough to receive lots of referrals and recommendations from both hiring clients and the people I am assisting to find a new job, so I’ll take that as reassurance that I am doing something right! I have two main streams that I operate in. The first is senior and executive appointments for people from design backgrounds. Anything from Associate up to Partner or Managing Director. The second stream is jobs for people who want to work outside of mainstream design, usually with a developer, main contractor, investor or property consultancy. These roles tend to be Design Management, Technical Management or Head of Design roles. I seek input and information from others in order that I may advise them correctly. I don’t dress things up to be anything they are not so you’ll always get an honest and useful response from me. I take pride in having an informed perspective on the market so I am able to advise people on the best route to take. After all these years in recruitment, I still love my work! I enjoy putting people in positions where they can have a positive impact on our built environment. I particularly like working on strategic hires. Outside of work I like mountain biking, playing badminton, scuba diving, travelling to interesting places and eating out. All of which has come to a distinct halt whist I focus on bringing up two boys!" 📐 The Architecture Social is an online platform packed with content to help you find new jobs, stand out from the crowd and take your career in Architecture to the next level 💻 Find out more at https://architecturesocial.com
