Urban Healthonomics: Martin Prince-Parrott Talks with Architects as Healers: Buildings as Medicine.07 Apr 202500:46:45

In this crossover episode, you'll hear the conversation we had on Architects as Healers: Buildings as Medicine with Martin Prince-Parrott about his new book Urban Healthonomics. You'll learn practical strategies to build for health, well being and economic vitality.

  1. The economics of sustainable healthy cities in an interconnected web of downstream (consumer) and upstream (policies/incentives).
  2. Look at change from multiple viewpoints: citizen, architect, engineer, developer, policy maker, stakeolder
  3. There are tangential economic impacts to poor air quality urban heat islands, water pollution, and social isolation. Addressing them requires forging uncommon public and private partnerships.
  4. Cities are multi-generational
  5. Preventing despair is our imperative. In hope, we believe solutions are possible and work towards them.

Embrace Equity: International Women’s Day Interview with Erica Rooney08 Mar 202300:32:42

This year, we celebrate International Women's Day by Embracing Equity. That includes gender parity. Gender Equality Crusader Erica Rooney shares her wisdom on overcoming the glass ceilings and sticky floors women experience in the workplace.

  1. Women need to be able to bring their whole self to work, not feel that they have to choose either caregiving or a career.
  2. You can have it all- whatever "it all" looks like for you.
  3. Your definition of success will change throughout your life.
  4. Three roadblocks you put in your path to having it all are not knowing your worth, numbing out, and imposter syndrome.
  5. Move past the roadblocks by naming them, questioning their validity, and shifting them to a more helpful thought.
  6. You are not a buffet, you do not have to serve everybody.

Move from Toxic Positivity to a Supportive Workplace02 Mar 202300:17:49

Should the workplace always be a positive place? Glossing over negative or difficult experiences sends a message to deep-six instead of exploring them. Let's move past the "I'm fine" culture of toxic positivity and get real with each other.

  1. Discern between appreciating the growth opportunity of a failure vs. pretending things are OK.
  2. Negative experiences and emotions need to be tolerated. Moving past them means naming them, finding the root cause and opportunities for change.
  3. Don't rush to slap a label on what you are going through. Be willing to be vulnerable and explore it.
  4. Forcing the positive is judging the current situation.
  5. Give comfort, free of the obligation of advice.
  6. There is no expiration date on what you are working through. The integrity of the experience is more valuable than the speed of the bounce back.

Get Out of Your Own Way: Interview with Elizabeth Correia23 Feb 202300:29:03

Feeling stuck? Before you complain about your life circumstances, take a look in the mirror. That face staring back is your number one success obstacle. My guest Elizabeth Correia shares insights on finding and following your passion without waiting for an invitation.

  1. Success is never about just doing one thing. Look for ways to cultivate spiritual growth, personal and professional development.
  2. Even painful circumstances can become your comfort zone because they are familiar. Resist the temptation to stay in patterns you know.
  3. Cultivate resilience so you can resist being taken out by failures that will occur as you move towards your success.
  4. You really do know what you want to do, even if you haven;t realized it yet. Pay attention to where your attention is drawn and believe that you can make a career out of your interests.
  5. Prepare your own table. Don't wait for someone else to clear the way for you.

Relating: How to have Authentic Connections to Others13 Feb 202300:17:15

Stop making your communication all about you- your need to share information, get feedback or drive different behavior. This episode is all about making an authentic connection and building relationships for better.

  1. Always assume positive intent- even if you have a negative reaction. Then engage in a conversation with the other person before inventing your own story about what happened and why.
  2. Avoid using violent or combative language that conveys judgement or contains accusations.
  3. Being in conflict triggers the fight or flight response, automatically putting you in defensive mode where there is no space for creating solutions.
  4. Use language that encourages the other person to engage and relate to you. Start by saying “I notice…” then “I feel…” then “I need…”
  5. Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable. Vulnerability creates authenticity. Authenticity is needed for trust Trust is the foundation of every relationship.

Using Conscious Language03 Feb 202300:23:52

What you say and how you say it can build trust, confer agency and make people feel good around you. Learn common speaking mistakes that torpedo your success so you can stop making them already!

  1. Avoid using absolutes or negative language- even when referring to yourself.
  2. Receive compliments by appreciating the acknowledgement of your effort and contribution instead of deflecting them.
  3. Don't let your own bias about the default normal lead to othering by singling out  group or population.
  4. Be decisive and descriptive- there is no need to qualify everything your say.
  5. Beware vocal fry. Ending sentences as if you are asking a question instead of making a statement makes you appear to doubt yourself,
  6. Drop the jargon, lingo and multi-syllabic words. Speak plainly and directly so that your audience can understand and relate to you.
  7. Acknowledge the challenges and empathize with dilemmas and tough decisions.

Provoking the ”aha!”01 Feb 202300:24:14

Gotta love those lighbulb moments when you get that flash of inspiration and clarity. Don't you wish they could happen on the regular? In this episode, I'll share ways to provoke the "aha" so you can enjoy wisdom and creativity downloads on demand.

  1. Get out of your comfort zone. Nothing good ever happens to you there because it maintains the status quo.
  2. Plug into your intuition and let it guide you to possibilities instead of accepting a limited list based on your past experiences.
  3. Do a longitudinal study of your life. Taking a retrospective view of everything you've accomplished and why it mattered to you helps you to get clarity on your purpose.
  4. Start making room to boldly pursue the things you love- even if you have to invest opportunities for yourself.

Workplace culture exists whether or not it's intentional. My guest Shannon Hughes shares expert advice on building a value based culture that scales with your firm, gives everyone a voice, and opens the door for innovation.

  1. Staff engagement happens when you create psychological safety- don't be afraid of the tension that can arise between maintaining the status quo and trying something new.
  2. Decision makers are influencers of culture. Provide context for change by sharing history and lessons learned.
  3. How you communicate culture impacts both staff and the clients you are trying to attract
  4. You can keep culture and values prominent even before you have budget and strategy in place

Put your Career on the Playground Instead of the Obstacle Course17 Jan 202300:26:36

Is your career a job you have to do, or a calling you get to do? Instead of viewing your career path as a grueling obstacle course, let's hang on the playground instead. That's where all the fun and creativity is anyway.

  1. Obstacles are no fun- they drain our resources. Thinking of your career as play helps you be lighter about things and choose opportunities that feel good to you.
  2. Your aspirations come with doubts and fears about what you believe is possible. Look past that filter to see what is really possible.
  3. Play instead of test
  4. Be relentless about pursuing what matters to you in your career- don't give bad actors your power.
  5. Ask for the opportunities you want instead of settling with what you get.
  6. Move from defense to offense by getting out of victim mode. Focus on what you want, not what you don't.

Confidence as a State of Being: Interview with Nicole Kalil06 Jan 202300:33:32

Confidence is an inside job. My guest Nicole Kalil shows you how to stop looking for validation and start aligning with your inner knowing. Learn how your fears and failures build trust and courage needed for true confidence.

  1. Confidence is alignment with your inner knowing- validation is just the icing on your confidence cake.
  2. When you try to be everything to everyone you aren't living your purpose. Look to your body for clues: if something is exhausting or uncomfortable, it's not aligned.
  3. Comparison is the thief of confidence. Shift from making your progress about you not how other people are doing.
  4. Emotions are indicators. When you work past negative ones, you build trust and courage which leads to confidence.
  5. Overthinking leads to inaction which leads to regret. You will regret what you didn't do far more than what you did.
  6. Stop being more committed to your limitations than your opportunities.

Power Play: How to Show Up Strong02 Jan 202300:23:16

Power gets a bad rap as a vehicle for exploitation and abuse.  Real power is something altogether different. Listen in to learn why being powerful is your birthright and three ways you can express it with integrity.

  1. You are meant to have and use power as a force for good. Bullying is actually a reflection of being powerless and trying to take power form others.
  2. Power requires that you be vulnerable and let go of the need for acceptance and approval.
  3. Advocacy is a form of power that gives others agency.
  4. Sovreignty is a form of power that allows you to be your own person and stop proving yourself
  5. Audacity is a form of power that lets you question assumptions and systems
  6. Because power is energy, when you engage in power struggles, you give away your energy and therefore your power.

An Ecosystem for Design Innovation: Interview with Noam Platt31 Mar 202500:30:28

The story of non-profit MakeGood was forged in architect Noam Platt's desire to help people with disabilities. Whether you also have a passion for assistive technology or some other cause lights you up, you don't have to wait for a project to have an impact. Learn why he thinks architects are uniquely qualified (and called) to lead positive change in the community and how to get started.

  1. Assistive technology is an emerging field that needs the creative thinking and problem solving skills of architects and designers. Finding areas like this and lending your expertise to them can have a lasting impact on your community.
  2. When you advocate and for something that helps people, you're not worried about asking for help or support. Embarrassment or making mistakes pale in comparison to getting something accomplished.
  3. You can't unsee problems especially if you know you have the ability to help solve them. One hour of your expert time is worth more than 20 hours of a non-experts time. Start by volunteering and building your network.
  4. The experience you get volunteering is experience you won't get working at a firm. That experience can be brought back to better inform projects at your firm.

Stop Making Resolutions that Don’t Work29 Dec 202200:21:42

It's that time of year. When we assess where we are, find faults, and resolve to do better. However, most resolutions don't even make it 6 weeks into the new year. Make 2023 your best year ever by ditching the resolutions and using the methods in this Episode.

  1. Find the "hell yes" for your soul instead of fixating on the things you think you should be doing.
  2. Being is always more powerful than doing. Choosing a word of the year help you align the things you do with who you want to be.
  3. Use your work as a filter to help you make choices in every moment

Release the Need to Overperform19 Dec 202200:20:26

Doing too much is a big sad. The amount of work you do isn't related to how well you are performing. The frazzle and overwhelm are a real joy killer. Listen in to learn three things you can do today to stop overperforming.

  1. Overperforming comes from a need for external validation. Spend your time and energy strategically instead.
  2. Make space for joy by evaluating which obligations are necessary and which one you can let go.
  3. Be an advocate for your time and defend time to rest in any form.
  4. Delegate or decline more things.
  5. Consider what can be done together with a client or in your personal life instead of doing too much preparation.

What Your Body Really Wants You to Know About Living Your Best Life08 Dec 202200:20:25

Ready to stop living from the neck up? In a hyper-vigilant state of endless thought loops? Listen to this excerpt from my Salutogenesis for Your Soul event and start integrating the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical parts of you for stressless success.

  1. Our four bodies are interconnected. That's why it's so important to be attuned to how you physically feel instead of always trying to push through.
  2. The stress response causes us to navigate the world from a state of fear.
  3. Salutogenesis is a way to generate health by sending the physical body cues that it is safe and can relax. All five aspects (sense of coherence, self-efficacy, relaxation response, prospect and refuge and biophilia) are important to include in your lifestyle.
  4. Salutogenesis resets the nervous system and allows the body to focus on regeneration and healing. This message then spreads to the other three bodies creating less stress and more clarity and well being.

The Art of Going For It: Interview with Tenille Bettenhausen05 Dec 202200:34:13

Want your life to have impact, but keep talking yourself back into the safety of your daily grind? Listen in as my guest Tenille Bettenhausen blows the doors off every lame excuse for not following your passions and taking action.

  1. Your skill set as an architect is valuable inside and outside of the profession. Match your interests with the work you do instead of trying to find a match in a defined career path.
  2. Do what you are passionate about and the clarity will come. Ask questions and explore options relentlessly.
  3. Don't let being busy be the reason you don't take on creative projects.
  4. When you do what brings you joy, you can't fail.
  5. We need to see what's possible modeled for us- look for examples and always know you are being an example for others.

Break Out of Second Thoughts Jail02 Dec 202200:16:05

What is your life was "yes, and..." more and "no, but..." a whole lot less? Imagine having a flash of inspiration that you fan into a flame instead of throwing cold water on it. That's the power of embracing the possibility of your first thought and breaking out of the limiting belief of those dastardly second thoughts.

  1. Allow yourself to receive joy unconditionally and without limit
  2. Trust that your first thought is always aligned with your purpose and soul led
  3. What dreams can you bring out of the attic and unbox if you let go of your second thoughts?
  4. Release your attachment to molding your career according to someone else's needs while neglecting your growth edge.
  5. It's a false choice that you have to choose between what brings you joy and what will serve others. Look for what's possible and take a stand for the "and."

Trying to do too much? Saying yes when you'd rather peace out? All those obligations are sucking away your energy. That doesn't leave much for pursuing the career you really want, not the one you think you have to have. Listen in to learn how to cut the power supply to your energy drains.

  1. Find your passion to get clarity about what opportunities are aligned with you and which are not.
  2. Find your energy leaks and unplug from them so your bandwidth isn't overloaded.
  3. Your career has seasons. Sometimes, you need to give out a lot of energy, but sometimes you need to pull back and use your energy to regenerate yourself.
  4. If some energy vampires feel hard to disconnect, ask "What if?" a different scenario could be possible.
  5. Opportunities are neither good or bad- they are good or bad for you at the moment. Discern what is in alignment and don't feel obligated to say yes to anything else.

Finding Your Growth Edge14 Nov 202200:26:06

Your growth edge is kind of like cooking a meal. Use all four burners on the cooktop, or you'll get bored and stagnant from the one pot meal. But make every pot a challenging dish, and you'll burn out (literally). Listen in to learn how to balance a mix of easy and challenging, long and short projects to stay on the edge without going over.

  1. Place yourself in situations and around people who will stretch you to think beyond the limits of what you thought was possible.
  2. Make time to integrate new information and savor the wins.
  3. Hold the space you need in your day to keep things on a pace that lets you be creative
  4. If you are spending more time on busy work than growth opportunities, you're losing your creative edge.

Getting Bad Advice? Maybe You’re Asking the Wrong Questions08 Nov 202200:26:46

Ever get advice that doesn't resonate- so you ask someone else, and someone else, and someone else? You're having this experience because you don't have clarity on what you really want, so you're only focusing on what's wrong. Fixing a problem with another person or situation is always an inside job first.

  1. The feeling of conflict is a sign that there is an integrity gap between your experience and your authentic self.
  2. Trying to get resolution to this conflict by asking for advice is like auditioning for a role you don’t want. No matter how good the advice, you won’t really want to take action because you don’t really feel aligned with the outcome.
  3. Great advice might not be great advice for you. The truth has to come from you.
  4. You can’t have a courageous conversation with someone unless you are first honest with yourself about why you feel conflicted.
  5. Focusing on how you were wronged or what you want to change about someone else’s behavior creates more conflict and a duality instead of integrity.

Big Thinking to Claim Success on Your Terms: Interview with Andrea Liebross24 Mar 202500:33:15

Big thinkers don't have pick me energy. They turn their visions into action by putting the work into making and executing clear plans. There's no better message than that to close out our celebration of Women's History Month. Podcaster, coach, and author Andrea Liebross shares her proven strategies to get out of stuck stress and be successful on your terms. What will be your legacy?

  1. You have thought options (try challenging your go-to ones). That's on period.
  2. Delegation is a skill to be developed. Go beyond basic detailed task and deadline outlines and learn how to truly get things off your plate.
  3. Operate in your zone of extraordinary achievement by asking:
    1. will it make a difference?
    2. are you the only one who can do it?
    3. do you need to know how to do it?
    4. do you enjoy it?
  4. Success has two ingredients- mindset and support systems. You need both.
  5. Ask what if and operate out of curiosity not fear.
  6. Confidence is the willingness to feel anything.

You don’t have to Breakdown to Breakthrough04 Nov 202200:20:13

We need to get overwhelm, stress, and burnout off of our daily playlist. Not only is this state of being blocking our ability to live a life we love, it's making us sick.

  1. You can handle stress in a more healthy way when you have the resources to cope. This is why regenerative time is so critical.
  2. A fully resourced you can do more better in less time (and savor the experience).
  3. You never have to wait for the breakdown to have a breakthough.

Monstrous: Horrifying Ways We Internalize Criticism31 Oct 202200:30:47

What conjures up the most fear in the workplace?  Being seen as vulnerable. Criticism can be a devastating monster when it echoes our own insecurities. Unmasking self doubt allows us to see the patterns, learn the lessons and know when to walk away because we don't need to be a character in someone else's nightmare.

  1. Fear is the lowest level emotion (truly the opposite of love). It shuts down our expansion and keeps us stuck.
  2. Our inner critic wants to assign villain roles to others. Never assume you know someone else's motivations.
  3. Embrace the fact that you're not for everyone. Don't get ensnared by needing to please other people.
  4. Take of the mask and act authentically and with integrity. Move on from those who that makes uncomfortable.

Taming the Chaos: Redefining Productivity in a Disrupted World25 Oct 202200:18:35

Hey you- stress puppy! It's time to embrace the disruption of post-pandemic life. Yup, that chaos you keep complaining about is only happening because you are resisting the new freedom you have. Listen in to learn how to redefine productivity to include plenty of time for regeneration of body mind and spirit.

  1. Disruptions are opportunities. What can you question about your traditional understanding of life and work?
  2. Being able to connect anytime anywhere allows us to bend space and time in our favor when we stop letting other people hijack our schedule.
  3. Leverage resources- who else can do this? Look for opportunities to delegate or hire out.
  4. Say yes to more of what regenerates you and prioritize that in your day.
  5. Reconstruct and redefine what an ideal day could look like for you if you free yourself from obligations.
  6. Always ask whether what you are doing is the highest and best use of your time.

Are You a Head Nodder or an Action Taker?21 Oct 202200:19:50

Maybe it's because you agree, maybe it's just making nice. Either way, nodding your head is a far cry from taking action. This episode explores the gap between knowing you want to change and taking change making action.

  1. Grace, ease, and joy are your factory setpoints. It's time to make feeling that way a priority again.
  2. There is no lack, therefore there is no limit to your abundance. Competing for resources is a disempowering illusion.
  3. The path between understanding something and embracing it is taking action.
  4. Turn off the inner wicked stepmother who tries to regulate how much grace, ease, and joy you allow yourself to experience.
  5. Don't let your busyness keep your success in the future.
  6. Self care is service to others.

Worth the Fight? When to be a Warrior18 Oct 202200:16:36

You might be down for the struggle, but maybe you don't have to be. Opposition takes a lot of energy and political capital. Listen in to know when you're squandering your bandwidth on a no-win situation and when the fight is worth it.

  1. The cause worth fighting for is the one that's bigger than you. If there isn't a higher purpose or greater good involved, don't engage.
  2. Allocate your energy positively (and get waaay more powerful results) by focusing on what you do want, not what you don't.
  3. Discern between doing what's right and righteousness. Righteousness is about fear of losing control or way of understanding the world challenged.
  4. Consider why you need to "win" or be right. Let other people have their opinions and shortcomings. It's not your job to convince them of anything.

Flex Your Superpower and Quit Tolerating the Beige Life14 Oct 202200:13:45

Have you found yourself tolerating a world that asks you to dumb down your dreams and dim your light? Not no more my friend. Listen in to learn more about showcasing your superpower instead of being shamed by it.

  1. When we tolerate situations and experiences that don't bring us joy, we end up forgetting ourselves just to fit in.
  2. Never let the busyness eclipse what's meaningful to you. Make your preferences your priority.
  3. Ask yourself what you really want. Then start doing it.
  4. Break your addiction to overwhelm and re-prioritize connecting to calm and joy.
  5. Greatness isn't about meeting expectations- it's about defying them.
  6. Release your attachment to being judged. Be in the moment doing what you love and the rest will happen for you.
  7. Love the parts of yourself that get made wrong. They are your strength.

Opportunity Beads:Collecting Moments of Career Impact11 Oct 202200:10:57

Life is what happens when you're busy making plans. But those seeming redirects might just be what puts you on the trail you were really meant to blaze. In this episode, I share two inspiring stories of multi-directional careers that had singular impact.

  1. Everything is possible as long as you believe it is.
  2. Be guided by your purpose and say "yes" to opportunities even when they seem unrelated to what you are doing.
  3. Nothing is ever wasted. Every experience provides knowledge and perspective you will use.
  4. Don't put the blinders of expectations on your career. A linear path might feel safe, but it's the unknown that takes you somewhere great.

Uplift Thinking (an Inclusive Leadership Model): Interview with Jing Johnson06 Oct 202200:35:52

Are you still slogging though a practice model that doesn't work for you? My guest Jing Johnson shares how she built a successful business based on uplifting others and providing support

  1. Be receptive to your clients and how you can serve them- they notice how you make them feel
  2. We stay stuck because we worked so hard to get where we are and pay our dues that we want the payoff. Instead, a bigger payoff can come from realizing that success can come in a different way.
  3. Open yourself up to the ease and grace of going down a career path that feels good to you.
  4. Be the example of the culture you want to have. Others are watching what you do, because it matters more than what you say.
  5. Live your core values and highlight how your team is implementing them.
  6. It's easy to have trust when things are going well, but it's more important to cultivate it when they are not by being a supportive leader.
  7. Share stories to help your team prepare for difficult clients or situations. Communication empowers and transparency enlightens.

Causing Effect: Being a Catalyst for Change03 Oct 202200:22:28

Creating change starts with inspiring people, but needs to include helping them move past doubts and fear of change. That means you need to be the catalyst- the constant that produces change without being changed. Listen in to learn how.

  1. Catalysts show others what's possible by bringing together the right mix of people and activities and activating them.
  2. Action happens naturally when there is alignment about what change needs to happen and why.
  3. People may initially buy in but eventually resist change because it moves them out of their comfort zone. Your job is to keep holding the vision for them and giving them permission to step outside the system.
  4. Go from cause and effect to causing an effect by helping people to feel confident and inspired even as they encounter doubts, fears or lack of acceptance from their peer group. Remember that everyone feels more comfortable when they return to their set point, even if it's not serving them.

Crazy ’till it Happens: Overcoming Your Dream Doubters27 Sep 202200:22:39

Don't let the doubters bring you down. You know, the ones who say you can't do it, or that you're wrong to even try. You have dreams bigger than you for a reason. Here's how to make them a reality.

  1. Being proactive is an internal process. Become a dreamer who does by getting clarity on your purpose and taking aligned action.
  2. Being reactive is an external process, but it doesn't have to be a passive one. You have better solutions when you've been proactive first.
  3. Question the premise and be more aware of the unconscious "protocols" in our culture so you can actively change them.
  4. The bigger the dream, the  more you have to fail to make it come true.
  5. Hold your ground, be solution oriented and include like minded people.

  1. Don't dismiss achievements to the luck of being in the right place at the right time, knowing the right people, or having more resources. Appreciate the work that went into setting up those circumstances.
  2. Lucky people have clarity about what they want to achieve and pursue it with courage and confidence. They put the boundaries in place they need to get support and stay focused.
  3. Taking small steps consistently pays big dividends.

Health, safety and welfare issues extend to wellbeing. As architects, our work impacts people spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically. We have the ability to be unflinching advocates who catalyze positive change- who's in?

  1. Architecture is advocacy. Never walk away from your power to have a positive impact

  3. Help develop or evaluate codes and standards as well as local zoning or housing policies.
  4. Take it meta by looking at issues that are bigger than a particular project.
  5. Understand how decisions are made and co-create priorities with your clients, including establishing non-negotiables.
  6. Test new ideas through simulations or augmented reality to overcome fear of change.

Leadership Looks Like This19 Sep 202200:21:27

Do you know the difference between mentoring, coaching, management and leadership? While all are important, there is movement in leadership. It is focused on the collective and taking them somewhere they couldn't get on their own, not on nurturing an individual. Listen in to learn more about following and being a leader.

  1. Leadership is distinct from other individuals you might seek out in your career. Mentors provide guidance and advice. Coaches help you set goals, get skills, and hold you accountable. Managers provide directives, assign roles and set deadlines.
  2. Leaders act for the collective and hold a vision while showing the way. Following them is a choice.
  3. Leaders question the premise, they don't operate within the status quo.
  4. Leaders take you out of your comfort zone and help you see what's possible.
  5. Leaders are wayshowers and unflinching advocates.
  6. If you don't take a stand for what you believe, no one knows if they want to follow you.

The good enough life isn't really good enough. If you're feeling stuck on that plateau because you just can't find the capacity to do even more, listen in to learn how to be an advocate for better without being exhausted.

  3. When you succumb to stress and fear, you lose sight of your value.

I'm taking a stand for self-care. Join me for the wellness series where I interview wellness experts, starting with Emotional Eating expert Paula Yolles. Learn why we eat when we're tired, how stress triggers us and how poor gut health affects anxiety and depression.

  1. Emotional eating has root causes in traumatic experience. Healing it cannot be based on diet and exercise alone.
  2. Retraining the brain allows the association of food with control to fade.
  3. Food is not a substitute for self care
  4. Eating the wrong foods creates a gut imbalance that not only creates digestive issues, but emotional ones.
  5. It's not about willpower or forcing yourself to do anything

If Your Job was a Person, Would You Date it?29 Aug 202200:12:01

Would you swipe left on your current job? What about future prospects? You get it all wrong when you only think about following the rules of a career path that someone else told you you should want. Let's try a different perspective that's more focused on the relationship you want to have.

  1. Do you want to be together? If the personality/culture of the firm isn't suited to yours, it's never going to work.
  2. What do you want to create with this company? If they aren't going in the direction you want to go, or can't commit the resources to initiatives, it's splitsville.
  3. What do you want to explore with them? How can you impact the industry together?
  4. How can you help them expand? Just like love, it's a two way street.

Hitting the Paper Ceiling? Know if You Really Need that Credential26 Aug 202200:17:08

Got so many letters after your name that it doesn't fit in your LinkedIn Profile? *whomp whomp* Credentials don't equal career momentum . Listen in to learn how to be strategic in claiming professional standing and subject matter expertise.

  1. Credentials are not a measure of your worth. Never pursue one to get a competitive edge or prove you can do something.
  2. As you follow your north star in your career, look for gateway credentials that are necessary like licensure or a specialty credential that establishes your subject matter expertise in an area you want to be the go to guru.
  3. Consider the ROI of any credential. If it's not building the opportunity pipeline you want, don;t bother.
  4. Credentials that aren't put to use are useless. Think about what new doors you want to open. How will this certification, degree, license or membership build your network and add rocket fuel to your passion projects?

Quiet Quitting is not the Answer22 Aug 202200:13:10

Quiet quitting is not empowering.  In fact, it's a cry for help. Find out why this strategy, rooted in passive aggressive behaviors, won't actually help you advocate for the career you want. Listen in to learn what does work in renegotiating your workday.

  1. Work you love should give you energy. If you're feeling exhausted, it's a sign you need to realign your work with your passion.
  2. If you feel apathetic about your work, it means you need to change one or more of the following: the role you play on projects, the type of projects you do, your firm, or your career path.
  3. Avoiding conflict is not a conflict resolution strategy.
  4. Have the hard talks with your employer and negotiate for what you want or need.
  5. Be solution oriented, not problem driven.
  6. Proactively pursue the career you want instead of coping with the career you have by default.

Happy International Women's Day!  We celebrate this year's theme by hearing from an architect and small business owner who has built her own success on the motto of showing up even when it's uncomfortable. Learn how this strategy led to building powerful networks and big opportunities.

  1. Networks are a critical way to meet and be mentored by people who share your perspective and have perhaps overcome some of your current challenges.
  2. Nothing is ever wasted- take inventory of the skills, experience and clarity about your preferences you gained even doing work you didn't love. Then. put those skills to use in work you do love.
  3. Stop accepting the premise of all or nothing in your career. You can make other choices if you ask for a different way of working that supports your well being.
  4. Women often won't show up in environments that are hostile to them, but you can't change anything if you don't get involved.
  5. You don't have to prove yourself by being everything to everybody. When we open doors for one another, we have the ability to distribute tasks and support one another.

Point of Failure: How Codependency Creates Toxic Work Environments19 Aug 202200:22:47

We test materials to the point of failure, adding more and more stress and pressure.  As humans, we do not require any such testing to prove our worth. Codependency tricks us into believing we do and we're all paying the price as it becomes institutionalized in our profession.

  1. Codependency has nothing to do with your strength of character or resilience. It's rooted in your need to make others happy at the expense of your own well being.
  2. Signs that you have a problem with codependency include, need for control, perfectionism, suppressing your emotions, losing your own identity and sense of what you actually want and need.
  3. Codependency has become institutionalized in our profession and looks like overperforming, lack of respect for schedules, and sacrificing fees or staff well being to please a client.
  4. Getting out of codependency requires getting back in touch with your own identity, needs and wants and making them non-negotiable.
  5. If you'd like help discovering the root cause of your codependent tendencies and getting clarity on defining success on your terms, contact me at angela@architectingpodcast.com

Are You Invalidating Yourself at Work?09 Aug 202200:23:19

Feeling like it's all work and no play? Like your job is just a frustration cycle? This episode explores how your struggle to feel seen and heard might originate with you. When you invalidate your needs or contributions, you set yourself up for less respect and more stress. Learn how to stop all that and feel good about work again.

  1. You are big energy- but you don't need to be in crisis mode to access that power, decisiveness and directness.
  2. Find small ways to assert your needs and abilities until you feel comfortable asserting in bigger ways.
  3. Never invalidate how you feel or what you can contribute just because it doesn't meet with immediate understanding or acceptance.
  4. Don't get triggered or sucked into someone else's story. Ask the questions you need to shine a flashlight onto issues.
  5. Determine your non-negotiables as let the rest go.
