Today our guest is chemist and former Greenpeace activist Dr. Michael Braungart based in Hamburg, Germany.

Dr. Braungart is known as the co-founder of the concept ‘Cradle to Cradle’and co-author of one of most important book of our times published in 2002 ‘Cradle to Cradle:

Remaking the way we make things’ in partnership with architect Bill McDonough. Dr. Braungart is the founder of the Environmental Protection & Encouragement Agency and co-founder of Cradle to Cradle® Design Framework.

Currently a professor for Eco-Design at Leuphana University of Lüneburg, Dr. Braungart holds the Cradle-to-Cradle chair at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Dr. Braungart was the keynote speaker at ECOWEEK 2017 in Tilburg, The Netherlands, and has joined us as a speaker and panelist the Hotel Experience in Athens, Greece on the 5th of October.

Today our guest is John Veikos architect an architecture practice based in Athens, Greece.

John Veikos is an architect. Educated at Cooper Union, Pratt and Cornell, John is the founder and director of Praxis Design Delivery, providing consulting to complex design projects, fabrication and façade designs, and a special projects director at Mossessian Architecture in London, UK, where John worked in projects in Shanghai, London, Doha and the UK among others. Also worked as Technical Coordinator for Raimund Abraham among other projects the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York, which is one of my favorite buildings.

John has spent his career providing design and technical expertise in award winning architectural projects, and has associated his career with leading architects such as Aldo Rossi, I.M. Pei and others.

Today our guest is Rahel Belatchew an architect, founder of award- winning Belatchew Arkitekter firm in Sweden.

Rahel is an architect based in Stockholm, Sweden. She studied in Paris and Amsterdam and graduated from Ecole Speciale d' Architecture in Paris in 1996. She has practiced in France, Tokyo, and Luxemburg before establishing Belatchew Arkitekter in Stockholm. In 2006 she was awarded Architect of the Year and in 2007 the office was listed by Wallpaper magazine as one of 101 of the world's most exciting new architects.

Belatchew Artkitekter is an architectural practice with a proactive human-centric approach and the Belatchew Labs are a studio within the office that works on experimental projects and research and testing of new approaches to urban and architectonic issues.

Anna Tsagkalou is an architect, sustainability engineer and cofounder of MOR Studio. Anna graduated from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and continued her studies at TU Delft where she obtained an MSc in Building Technology. Her focus lies on developing an integrated design approach, where climate and energy performance- driven design are used as integral tools for creating sustainable architecture.

Today our guest is architect Ulf Meyer an, architect and writer based in Germany.

Ulf is an architect, former partner at Ingenhoven Architects and later Senior Associate with HENN Architects in Germany. He is a graduate of the Technical University (TU) of Berlin, and the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago he is the co-author of the book “The World’s Greenest Buildings”. Ulf in addition to being an architect, he is an architectural journalist and critic with over 1,000 articles and numerous books. Ulf has also taught architecture and lectured widely around the world

Ulf was a keynote speaker at ECOWEK in Italy, Poland, Denmark and Israel, and has contributed as a co-author in the first ECOWEEK book.

Today our guest is architect Thomas Rau an entrepreneur, architect, innovator, inspirer and visionary based in the Netherlands.

Thomas Rau motto is 'guided by the future' – ie. By what will be needed in the future and not by what is achievable at the moment.

Thomas has been making a major contribution to the national and international discussion about sustainability, the use of renewable energy sources in architecture and the question of how to act in light of the current scarcity of raw materials for decades. With his architectural firm RAU, he has set up various innovations and new standards in the field of carbon-neutral, energy-neutral and energy-positive construction, and recently also for circular architecture.

In 2010 he founded Turntoo, to create new business models for the circular economy.

In 2017 he established Madaster Foundation to ensure that there will be no more construction waste in the future.

Thomas Rau is annually ranked high in the Sustainable 100 of the daily newspaper Trouw. In 2013 he was named Architect of the Year and received the ARC13 Oeuvre Award from the trade magazine De Architect for his efforts over the past 20 years to promote and realize sustainable architecture across the board, as well as for 'his inspiring contribution to social and architectural agenda.'
He is the author of the book Material Matters (2016) together with Sabine Oberhuber .

Σε αυτό το επεισόδιο συνδεόμαστε με την Κίνα και την Σανγκχάη και τον Αλέξανδρο Οικονόμου, Senior Architect στο γραφείο FTA.  Ένα γραφείο με 150 άτομα προσωπικό.

O Aλέξανδρος μεγάλωσε στην Αθήνα και τα Εξάρχεια μέχρι τα 19 όταν και έφυγε για να δουλέψει και να σπουδάσει στο Μιλάνο μέχρι τα 28 του.

Εκεί είχε την ευκαιρία να μάθει την γλώσσα και να σπουδάσει δίπλα από τους μεγάλους Μάστερς της σύνγχρονης αρχιτεκτονικής όπως ο CINO ZUCCI των CZA  και να γνωρίσει από κοντά την ιστορία και το παρόν μιας από τις πρωτεύουσες του Design μέσα από το Salone del Mobile και την πλούσια αρχιτεκτονική κληρονομιά.Επέστρεψε στην Ελλάδα για να κάνει το στρατιωτικό του και ξεκίνησε να εργάζεται σε διάφορα studios μεταξύ άλλων τα γραφεία KOIS ARCHITECTS, DECA, A&M ARCHITECTS...

Παρόλο που το επίπεδο της δουλειάς στην Ελλάδα, στην Αρχιτεκτονική, είναι πολύ υψηλό και στέκεται επάξια στην διεθνή σκηνή  πάντα ήθελε να ζήσει στην Ασία για λίγο για να δεί και την μεγαλύτερη κλίμακα. Από όταν επισκέφθηκε το Τόκιο το 2010, μετά την πρώτη του αποφοίτηση αποφάσισε να πάει στην Κίνα καθώς ένοιωσε πώς θα μπορούσε να δεί διαφορετικές τυπολογίες και να συμμετάσχει σε ενδιαφέροντα projects στα οποία μόνο ένας μικρός αριθμός γραφείων μπορούσε να αγγίξει.

Προς το παρόν ζεί στην Shanghai τα τελευταία 4.5 χρόνια και δουλεύει για διάφορες εταιρίες. Ξεκίνησε από Junior και τώρα έχει θέση Senior Architect και Team Leader σε μερικά έργα σε ένα πολύ ενδιαφέρον μέρος για να ζείς και να δουλεύεις όπου ο ρυθμός δεν έχει καμία σχέση με αυτόν της Ευρώπης. Έχει δουλέψει σε projects όπως ένας διαγωνισμός που σχεδίασε 30.000 μ2 για mixed use έργο σε μια πόλη λίγο έξω απο την Σανγκάη, την  Jiaxing

Αυτή την στιγμή βρίσκεται σε ένα σταυροδρόμι προσωπικά καθώς σκέφτεται τα επόμενά του βήματα.

Aris Kafantaris, Chief Project Manager at Kengo Kuma and Associates Architects in Tokyo.  

Aris Kafanantaris is an architect, graduate of the National Technical University of Athens School of Architecture and the University of Tokyo School of Architecture. Aris joined Kuma research lab in 2011 and then Kengo Kuma & Associates Tokyo in 2014.   Kengo Kuma Associates Architects is an international award-winning practice based in Tokyo, Paris, Shanghai and Beijing, with more than 300 employees, established by architect Kengo Kuma in 1992. The office has designed a number of important commissions including the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo for the 2020 Summer Olympics.  Kengo Kuma was the keynote speaker of ECOWEEK in Rome in 2012 and a co-author of the first ECOWEEK book published in 2016.

Jan Jongert is an architect graduated from the Academy of Architecture in Rotterdam in 2003. He is the cofounder of Superuse Studios in Rotterdam a firm that designs interiors and buildings and develops strategies to facilitate the transition to a responsible society through circular practices at all levels. Jan develops tools and processes to realize tangible projects that empower local exchange and production, as an alternative to transporting and wasting resources, products and components around the globe. We will talk today about some of the key projects developed by Superuse, such as Villa Welpeloo (2009), Harvestmap (2012) Blue City (2016) and Pulsapp (2018).

Today our guest is artist and designer Thanos Zakopoulos based in Milano, Italy.

Thanos Zakopoulos is a creator of varied forms and contexts. An artist, a designer and a photographer amongst other things, he likes to bring together different disciplines and situations creating projects which balance between contemporary art and design. He has presented and participated in many exhibitions around the world and has given lectures

in various occasions in Europe and China.

With artist and designer Katia Meneghini, Thanos has created CTRLZAK, a hybrid studio that integrates diverse disciplines and forms of expressions. the studio’s creations are based on extensive research into humanity’s cultural history and the natural world in order to create a meaningful future. Due to its’ interdisciplinary approach CTRLZAK specializes in art direction while creating artworks, objects and spaces but above all points of reflection whereform follows meaning. Through the use of semiotic tools within the creative process the studio conceives projects and orchestrates situations that surpass common aesthetic values operating on a deeper cognitive level, aspiring to make people consider their actions and the planet that we live in.

Thanos was a speaker at ESO event in 2022 in Athens, Greece organized by Vasilis.

Συνεχίζουμε με την θεματική ενότητα Business Of Architecture (ΒΟΑ) που εστιάζεται στην αθέατη πλευρά της αρχιτεκτονικής και στον ρόλο που διαδραματίζουν τα οικονομικά και το επιχειρείν σε αυτή.Ο σκοπός του σημερινού podcast είναι να κάνουμε μια εισαγωγή στο BOA να εξετάσουμε τις βασικές προκλήσεις που αντιμετωπίζει ένα αρχιτεκτονικό γραφείο, ποιός είναι ο ρόλος των οικονομικών και να ρίξουμε φώς στο ποιά είναι η επόμενη ημέρα. Σε συνέχεια λοιπόν του πρώτου επεισοδίου ο σκοπός του σημερινού podcast είναι να απαντήσουμε σε κάποια απο τα βασικά ερωτήματα που τέθηκαν σχετικά με την ανάπτυξη ενός γραφείου, το σωστό μέγεθος ενός γραφείου, τι πρέπει να κάνει ένα τυπικό γραφείο στο οικονομικό κομμάτι.

Ονειρευόταν να γίνει αρχιτέκτονας, σπούδασε Μηχανολόγος Μηχανικός στο University of Manchester και έκανε ΜΒΑ στο Alba Graduate Business School. Τελικά η μοίρα τον έφερε εκεί που αρχικά ονειρευόταν, στην Αρχιτεκτονική.

Kristian is an architect operating in the span between political will and  urban design, which realizes people’s visions in the everyday life of cities. His focus is on social, economic and environmental sustainability, in projects that involve mobility, masterplanning, revitalization strategies and urban policies. Kristian has worked with a number of leading cities, developers, organizations and NGO’s, across Europe, North America and China. Kristian has contributed to several books, exhibitions and films and is a lecturer in a number of academic institutions. I am proud to say that Kristian was a keynote speaker at ECOWEEK in Copenhagen in 2013 and a co-author of the first ECOWEEK book that was published in 2016.

Today our guest is the award-winning inventor of the ‘bio-climatic skyscraper’, the architect who Gardian named as one of the 50 people who could save the planet, architect, writer and distinguished professor Ken Yeang. Ken Yeang is an architect and ecologist, known for his signature hyper- green architecture, a field he pioneered since 1971. His work which is based on the science of ecology, has received over 70 awards. His work that performs beyond conventional green-rating systems (such as LEED), has a distinct visually signature verdant green aesthetic, that balances the organic with the inorganic constituents in built systems as ’constructed ecosystems’. We will speak on the early signature Mesiniaga Tower, and later projects such as the Solaris and Suasana with landscape ramps, green sky-courts and many more. Ken is a graduate of the Architectural Association in London and he received his doctorate on the topic of ecological design and planning from Cambridge University. Ken is currently the Distinguished Plym Professor at Illinois University.

Nicola  Delon, is an architect and co-founder of Encore Heureux Architects an award winning firm that among others curated the French pavilion at the 16th Biennale in Venice in 2018, and undertook a variety of projects. Nicola  studied architecture at Toulouse and at the Université de Montréal as well as at McGill University and received his diploma from the Architecture School of Paris La Vilette. In 2001 he founded Encore Heureux, agence d’architecture, with Julien Chopin. The work of Encore Heureux includes projects for temporary facilities, including a proposal for travelling performance halls using the French railway network (2005), Thèatre 95 (Cergy Pontoise, 2006) and the installation ‘Lieux Infinis’ in the French pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2018, which was curated by Encore Heureux. Building projects include Ciné 32 (Auch, 2012), the AteliersMédicis (Clichy-sous-Bois, 2018) and the Lycée de Longoni (Mayotte, under construction). In 2015 Delon was selected as the ambassador for architecture at the Assises de la Jeune Création

Ulrike Schartner is an architect, graduate of the University of Applied Arts, in Vienna. Ulrike is teaching architecture at TU Vienna, KTH Stockholm, TU Graz, and others. Ulrike is a founding partner of gaupenraub +/- in Vienna, which she founded with architect Alexander Hagner. Ulrike is also a founding partner in omniplan AB, which deals with architecture and project management in Stockholm, Sweden with Staffan Schartner and Pelle Norberg.

The architecture firm gaupenraub +/- was founded in 1999 and was selected in the first season of Young Viennese Architects (YoVA1). The firm works in different areas and scales. Its broad field of work ranges from construction to urban planning to furniture and product design. Gaupenraub +/- became known from its involvement in projects for disadvantaged people, and was recipient of the 2020 City of Vienna Award for Architecture.

Before joining Piraeus Bank Group, Mr. Kormas served as an Advisor to the Governor of Bank of Greece and prior to that, he worked for the European Central Bank (ECB). Throughout his twenty years’ tenure with an extensive experience across the areas of banking, economic and regional development, real estate and tourism, he delivers solutions in demanding environments through innovative thinking.

With a genuine compassion to give and share, George tries to implement regularly numerous social and corporate responsibility initiatives that add color to his busy multi-role schedule.

Kateřina is an architect that started her career as a teacher of Experimental design studio founded together with prof. Achten in 2010. She aimed at manufacturing students projects and exhibiting them in public spaces specializing in plastic bottles. She designed many public installations and then created the PET(b)ric specially shaped bottle for construction. In 2015 with Šimon Prokop founded PETMAT.  PETMAT is an NGO and a research group at Faculty of Architecture at the Czech Technical University of Prague. PETMAT was created in July 2014 in an Experimental studio at the Faculty of Architecture, which has a tradition in using garbage as a building material since 2010. PETMAT is focused on pilot projects in terms of plastic recycling methods through 3D printing, raising public awareness and generating pieces of art and design that investigate the use of recycled PET in architecture.   PETMAT collaborates with many partners, such as the Muzeum Jindřichohradecka, Umění ve městě, CTU publishers, Plzeň 2015, NTK and many more.

Architect Panos Sakkas with Architect Foteini Setaki are the innovators behind the The New Raw which is Crafting plastic waste with robots.

The New Raw is a research and design studio based in Rotterdam (Netherlands) founded in 2015 by architects Panos Sakkas and Foteini Setaki with the ambition to give new life to discarded materials through design, robots and craftsmanship.

The New Raw has developed a growing body of work which advocates for a sustainable use of plastic to spring a positive environmental and societal impact.

New Raw projects range from experimentation with hyperlocal fabrication, from decentralized production to participatory design methodologies on circular economy systems, to exploratory research on city (‘Print Your City Amsterdam’) and marine plastic pollution as developed for Second Nature (which recently won the 2020 Rossana Orlandi Plastic Prize) should add that you developed for these projects a series of customizable furniture that could be adjusted by citizens via an online platform in order to engage them in the recycling of plastic.

New Raw is a relatively new firm but really promising, catching the attention of media and publications. The New Raw has been featured in international books, including “Wasted: When Trash Becomes Treasure” by Katie Treggiden and has received media coverage by Dezeen, Domus, Wired, Financial Times, Design Milk, Fortune, Mashable, Fast Company, ELLE Decoration, Architectural Digest, De Morgen and many more.

The New Raw’s projects have taken part in numerous international exhibitions and venues, among others: Design Museum in Moscow (RU), Caixa Forum in Barcelona (ES), Museum De Domijnen (NL), Salone Del Mobile (IT), Aikaterini Laskaridi Foundation (GR), Amsterdam Gemeente (NL), Foundation Telefonica, Madrid (ES), Onassis Cultural Center, Athens (GR), Framelab Amsterdam (NL), Gdynia Design Days (PL), Centquatre (FR) and many more.

Το 2021 λοιπόν είναι ένα έτος που γιορτάζουμε τις επιτυχίες που μας εμπνέουν αλλά και ανακαλύπτουμε, επισημαίνουμε και επιλύουμε τα κενά που υπάρχουν.

Για να μετρήσουμε επιτυχίες και να εντοπίσουμε σημεία προβληματισμου, μαζί μας σήμερα είναι η η Φάνια Σινανιώτη.

Το μελετητικό γραφείο “VOIS architects” ιδρύθηκε στην Αθήνα το 2006 από την Κατερίνα Βορδώνη και τη Φάνια Σινανιώτου και αποτελείται από μία ομάδα νέων αρχιτεκτόνων. Από τότε παρέχει υπηρεσίες μελέτης και επίβλεψης σε διαφορετικούς τομείς και κλίμακες αρχιτεκτονικών έργων.

H Κατερίνα Βορδώνη γεννήθηκε το 1980 στην Αθήνα. Το 2001 ολοκλήρωσε τις σπουδές της στην αρχιτεκτονική στο UCL - Barttlet school of Architecture του Λονδίνου. Το-2004, απέκτησε το Diploma of Architecture στην Architectural Association του Λονδίνου. Στη συνέχεια, εργάστηκε στο «Ατελιέ 66, Σουζάνα + Δημήτρης Αντωνακάκης», στην Αθήνα καθώς και στο γραφείο Sasaki Associates, στην Βοστώνη, ΗΠΑ.

H Φάνια Σινανιώτου γεννήθηκε το 1981 στην Αθήνα. Το 2001 ολοκλήρωσε τις σπουδές της στην αρχιτεκτονική στο UEL του Λονδίνου. Το 2004 απέκτησε  το Master in Architecture στo Royal College of Art του Λονδίνου. Στη συνέχεια, εργάστηκε για ένα χρόνο ως assistant architect στο αρχιτεκτονικό γραφείο ISV, στην Αθήνα και τον επόμενο χρόνο με τον ίδιο τίτλο στο γραφείο Sasaki Associates, στην Βοστώνη, ΗΠΑ. Οι δύο γνωρίστηκαν στο σχολείο, σπούδασαν την ίδια περίοδο στο Λονδίνο, δούλεψαν μαζί στη Βοστώνη και κατά την επιστροφή τους στην Αθήνα ανοιξαν το γραφείο “VOIS architects”. Από το 2009, μέλος της ομάδας είναι και η Μάρθα Γεωργίου, που αποφοίτησε από την Αρχιτεκτονική Σχολή του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών, προσθέτοντας την πείρα της από τη συνεργασία της με αξιόλογα αρχιτεκτονικά γραφεία.  Αντλώντας έμπνευση από την καθημερινή ζωή, τις συνήθειες, τις εικόνες, τις στιγμές και τα αντικείμενα οριοθετούμε την αρχιτεκτονική πορεία κάθε έργου, το οποίο αντιμετωπίζεται ως μοναδικό.

Maria Papafigou is an architect who for many years has shared her time  between Athens and Stockholm where she until recently also taught architecture at the KTH. Maria studied architecture in Sweden, Spain and  Greece. OOAK architects was founded in 2013 and is today run by Maria  Papafigou and Johan Annerhed, who previously ran the Athens-based  studio paan architects. Small in size, the office works with projects of  different scales in a broad variety of environments around the globe,  sensitively approaching each project in the context of its own conditions  and needs. Maria was a speaker at ESO event in February 2020 in Athens, Greece  organized by Vasilis.

Tα podcast γίνονται στο πλαίσιο της ενότητας Women in Architecture, η οποία ξεκίνησε το 2020 από το Archisearch.gr και την Design Ambassador.

Ο διάλογος τότε εξελισσόταν μετρημένα, καθώς η ισότητα στην πράξη θεωρούνταν δεδομένη.

Ωστόσο σήμερα πολλές βεβαιότητες έχουν κλονιστεί, έτσι το θέμα για την Παγκόσμια Ημέρα της Γυναίκας, το οποίο χαρακτηρίζει όλο το 2021, από τα Ηνωμένα Έθνη είναι «Women in leadership”, με στόχο τη διαμόρφωση ενός ακόμα πιο ισότιμου μέλλοντος στην μετά covid περίοδο.

H Aνθή Τζάκου είναι σύμβουλος στρατηγικής Marketing και Branding στο χώρο της αρχιτεκτονικής, και παραγωγός ψηφιακής τέχνης.

Έχει εργαστεί στην Αθήνα, τη Νέα Υόρκη και το Λονδίνο ως project manager σε αρχιτεκτονικούς διαγωνισμούς, καμπάνιες marketing για διεθνή έργα, στρατηγικές ανάπτυξης και επικοινωνίας για start-up και rebranding projects. Τα τελευταία 4 χρόνια διευθύνει το τμήμα Ανάπτυξης Επιχειρήσεων του αρχιτεκτονικού γραφείου Bennetts Associates με έδρα το Λονδίνο. Οι Bennetts Associates έχουν πάνω από 150 βραβεία για το σχεδιασμό θεάτρων, πανεπιστημίων και χώρων εργασίας, και θεωρούνται από τους πρωτοπόρους της βιώσιμης αρχιτεκτονικής. Το πρώτο τους έργο γραφείων στην Αθήνα βρίσκεται υπό κατασκευή.

Έχει αποφοιτήσει από το Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας με σπουδές στην αρχιτεκτονική, από τη Βartlett School of Architecture του UCL στο Λονδίνο με Masters in Graduate Architectural Design και είναι μέλος του Chartered Institute of Marketing. Από το 2017, ανήκει στη διευθύνουσα ομάδα του Knowledge Quarter στο King’s Cross του Λονδίνου: έναν από τους πιο καθοριστικούς πυρήνες γνώσης στις επιστήμες, τις τέχνες, τα media και την εκπαίδευση παγκοσμίως. Η δουλειά της έχει εκτεθεί στο ΕΜΣΤ, στη Biennale της Βενετίας, στο Royal Institute of British Architects, στο Museum of Contemporary Art στο Chicago, στο ΜοΜΑ και το Storefront of Art & Architecture στη Νέα Υόρκη.
