An aging star must traverse through the aches of revisiting a role from her past as her good friend and assistant tries to help the process. Otto is the curmudgeon of his neighborhood and is beholden to help his neighbors as he tries to end his life again and again. A Seoul taxi driver gets the fare of a lifetime to drive a German journalist into a closed off city where riots and deaths are happening.

As terrorist take athletes as hostages during the 1972 Olympics in Munich, a sports broadcasting team must figure out the best way to report and historically, reporting it live. A cat is forced to befriend a few jungle animals on a boat while a massive flood blankets the terrain as natural instincts and community begins to fight and form. As cities begin to break down amidst the dead coming back to eat human flesh, a group of four make their way to a shopping center and attempt to seize control in order to better survive.

#210 Joker: Folie a Deux, The Platform 2, REC2, Pontypool

The trial of the century begins for murderer Arthur Fleck as he grapples with tensions rising and a wave of fans wanting Joker to return as he meets the potential love of his life, Harley Quinn. A prison with hundreds of levels where a platform of food descends each day and a prisoner who becomes a huge cog or wrench into who gets what to eat, if any at all. A scientist and strike team infiltrate a Spanish apartment building in search of evidence of a highly dangerous and contagious virus amid all of the infected residents. The tiny town of Pontypool becomes ground zero for a violent virus that infects people through speech and the people working at the local radio station must uncover and resolve this or escape before it’s too late.

An aging actress forced out of her career decides to transform and rip herself to pieces with an underground treatment that makes her young again. Patience and violence are at odds in the form of a one-man-army that becomes the center of systemic abuse by local authorities. A man and woman travel to a Caribbean island in search of someone missing and the strange disease that brings people back from the dead. In the state of what remains after the zombie-fueled wars, an idyllic 1950’s town has managed normalcy by making the undead into their indentured servants and the lonely boy that befriends one of them, named Fido.

We may say goodbye to winter but Frozen Empire says otherwise. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire brings back the fun and funny from the original films but still falters from modern plot contrivances and boring villains. The Promised Land brings genuine intrigue into a man as he struggles to what he believes a man is supposed to be. This intimate story has heartache, suspense and stellar performances. Past Lives proves that love recognizes bounds and what those bounds are and how intricate they are is something that manifests amazingly in the protagonist and with the tragedy we call time.

It’s been a great year in films, despite the strikes, for international stories, high-concept and homely comedies and animation. We were shown that you don’t need hundreds of millions of dollars to create an awesome action scene or a memorable adventure.
