Newly described as it's own species, Cruziohyla sylviae is a prime candidate for research. Captive populations are an important factor in ensuring the species' survival for a number of reasons.  And as such, a proper science based understanding of their care and breeding is vital. 

This week I am joined by Sam Sucre of Natural Tanks. We discuss his recently published paper documenting Cruziohyla sylviae husbandry and we have a very frank discussion about some of the successes and failures associated with conservation efforts.  Can we be critical of conservation methods? Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis or Bd is one of the most infamous agents of amphibian disease world wide. But did you know that there are multiple lineages other than the Global Panzootic Lineage and that the fungus can be affected by a virus?  New research involving the fungus and mycoviruses has shed a fresh light on the virulence of chyrid. In this episode I am joined by researchers Mark Yacoub  and  Jason Stajich  to discuss it.  We talk about mycology (the study of fungi) in general, as well as the specifics of what we have learned from the  mapping of the Bd genome. We also go on to discuss what can be learned about fungi and other microfauna living within the guts of wild and captive amphibians and how it can potentially help with their survival.

 As the dart frog hobby evolved over the past 50 years, many different species and locales came and went along with it.  However, for the longest time, we haven't had a clear picture of which species made it into the hobby, when they made it into the hobby and how they made it into the hobby. In recent decades a phenomenon has developed around the Sonoran Desert Toad (AKA the Colorado River Toad) and the recreational use of its toxins for psychedelic purposes.  There is however, a great deal of misinformation out there regarding the topic.  So to set the record straight I am joined by Robert Villa.  Robert dispels many of the common myths associated with the species and we discuss how exploitation for its unique toxins is affecting its survival. We also discuss how the psychedelic phenomenon started (Hint- it's not how many of you think it started).

Robert is a naturalist and the president of the Tuscan Herp Society. He also has an intimate understanding of the Sonoran Desert Toad and has been a source of factual information for many publications including the New York Times.

There is current legislation under way in the US that may significantly affect our rights to work with amphibians, reptiles, birds, invertebrates and non domesticated mammals. In this special episode I am joined by USARK President -Phil Goss, and we discuss the Lacey Act Amendments in the America Competes Act of 2022, where the bill is currently, and what the effects will be if it is passed into law. The Japanese Giant Salamander (Andrias japonicus) is one of the world's most iconic amphibian species. In this episode I am joined by Director of Buishido Adventure Travel limited and CEO of Sustainable Daisen -  Richard Pearce, directly from Japan.  Sustainable Daisen is a not for profit organization that focuses on Japanese Giant Salamander conservation through habitat preservation,  conservation initiatives, and global engagement. Through his decades of guiding experience, Richard has a developed an intimate understanding of the natural history and lifecycle of one of the world's largest amphibians. 

In this episode we discuss Richard's background as a guide, and the efforts made by Sustainable Daisen. Flightless fruit flies are one of the most popular prey items for dart frogs, glass frogs, mantids, spiders, baby chameleons and more.  In this episode I run down the basics of how to culture your own flies at home, and I share some tips that I've picked up along the way.  Culturing flies can be a bit intimidating at times , especially for beginners, but it doesn't have to be! So if you are interested in keeping smaller amphibians, lizards or inverts but not sure if fruit flies are for you, give this episode a listen.

Tiny arthropods known as springtails (Collembola spp.) are popular among vivarium enthusiasts for their "cleanup crew" abilities.  We often hear about their use in “bioactive” vivariums. In 2013 Dr. Matthew Dugas co-authored a paper about the important role that carotenoid supplementation plays in oophaga pumilio reproduction. The findings have greatly influenced captive dart frog husbandry methods for almost a decade now and most hobbyists today incorporate carotenoids into their supplementation regiments.  It is my pleasure to have Dr. Dugas as my guest this week and we discuss the paper in detail. We also discuss sophisticated pumilio parental behaviors, how egg deposition sites are chosen, and how mother pumilio are able to locate their own tadpoles.

A few decades ago, the idea of using cryopreserved genetic material to bring  back extinct or endangered species laid only in the realm of science fiction.  Although we  are not quite at that point today, science has still brought us much closer. In tonight's episode I am joined by Dr. Michael Mahony of  Australia's University of Newcastle. We discuss his research into cryopreservation as a means to protect fragile amphibian populations and the possibility of resurrecting extinct species of frog. We also discuss some of the unique challenges that Australian Amphibians face and what it was like discovering new species.  In fact, Michael has described 15 new species of frog, and he has the distinction of having a newly discovered named after him in his honor.

Tonight I am joined by Dr. Taegan McMahon. Taegan is a Disease Ecologist and she has studied Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) (commonly known as chytrid) quite extensively. In this episode we discuss the lifecycle of the fungus, how it is spread and what the future holds.  We also  discuss the surprising role that non amphibian hosts, such as crayfish and birds have in spreading Bd and how a  possible vaccine for the fungus may be available in the near future. 

There are many available options for housing amphibians in captivity these days. But how do we know which one is the best? Well, the answer isn't always straight forward, and different setups suit certain situations better than others. In this episode I provide a quick rundown of some common enclosure types along with the pros and cons of each. 

In tonight's episode I sit down with fellow podcaster Dillon Perron of The Animals at Home Network and we discuss the concepts behind high level keeping. As the amphibian and reptile hobbies have grown over the past few decades, our attitudes towards keeping have advanced as well. It is now common practice to house animals in more naturalistic enclosures, replicate their normal lifecycles with seasonal variations, and to provide them with some form of behavioral enrichment.  Dillon and I have an open discussion about many of these points,  we compare and contrast some of our own experiences, and we share how we have each progressed through our respective hobbies.
