Caleb Flynn promised his mistress a divorce for a year and never filed. The reason is in the Caleb Flynn trial texts, and it's smaller and uglier than money or custody. According to Reeb, an Instagram account using the false identity “Derrick Hammond” was created by Flynn’s phone and used to monitor and communicate with Botner. Reeb also grouped messages according to their subject matter. She testified that 141 referenced Flynn wanting to kill Ashley, 95 referenced his hatred of Ashley, and 188 involved discussions about deleting digital information. Communication between Flynn and Botner dropped dramatically during January, according to Reeb. They began communicating again February 14. Reeb counted 266 communications from that point into February 15. Then, beginning around 4 p.m. February 15 and continuing into February 16, the number increased to 716. Reeb testified that GroupMe was deleted from Flynn’s phone at roughly 1 a.m. February 16. Instagram was also deleted around that time. Flynn denies killing his wife, Ashley Flynn. Prosecutors allege he murdered Ashley and staged a burglary. His defense says an actual intruder was responsible. The jury has heard what many of these messages allegedly said. He told Morgan he couldn’t describe the gun he admits he owned. Then Flynn told Morgan it felt like they were pointing at him. He denied domestic violence. Todd intended to retire and leave the company equally to Ashley and Kayla, and he testified that Caleb’s income could increase with higher sales. The Smiths also provided additional money to the Flynns through their “GGFM fund,” created for family trips and experiences. Todd said that after Ashley’s death, he thought the circumstances did not look good for Caleb. He testified that he searched, “Can a Christian man snap and kill his wife?” His wife told him not to entertain the possibility. Captain Tony Smith’s testimony shifted from the family to the investigation. The Tipp City Police captain said he asked the FBI to assist early and found financial documents that led investigators to Caleb and Ashley’s accounts. Subpoenas went to Allied Bank and Citibank. He also testified about DNA collected from one of the Flynn children, a laptop Todd turned over from the Flynn home, and numerous tipline reports forwarded to the FBI. Smith said none of those tips panned out and acknowledged that he personally did not investigate them. On cross-examination, Captain Smith said police collected items from Alleigha Botner’s church office.
