| The HOBGOBLIN!! (Part 2) (Season 5, Episode 8) | 22 Dec 2021 | 01:43:28 | |
On the previous episode Dan and Mark discussed what made Roger Stern’s Hobgoblin one of the greatest villain debuts of all of Spider-Man history and such a compelling mystery. But as compelling as that mystery became, it ended with one of the most mystifying and downright confusing reveals in comics history. But that reveal was only the tip of the iceberg. In the Spider-Man creative offices of Marvel, drama, disagreements, and scandal pitted several different creative voices against each other, with their results spilling onto the comic pages. So, on this episode, Dan and Mark are going to unpack all the twists and turns on the pages and behind the scenes that made the reveal of the Hobgoblin’s identity so infamous. If you want to follow along with us on our journey through the first Hobgoblin identity reveal, we will be discussing events of Amazing Spider-Man #s 259-261, 275-278, 281-289, Spider-Man vs Wolverine, and Web of Spider-Man #s 29-30. Plus, we’ll be including several interviews we’ve done over the years and referencing interviews from a number of publications including, most specifically Christopher Priest’s 2002 blog post “Why I never Discuss Spider-Man”.

| Spider-Man: No Way Home – NO SPOILERS Discussion | 16 Dec 2021 | 00:21:49 | |
I was lucky enough to see Spider-Man: No Way Home before even the premiere in Hollywood, thanks to an invite from Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. I’ve had a ton of complicated feelings about the film and so when my friend and fellow critic David Chen called me up to talk about them we got into a brief SPOILER-FREE discussion of the film and the MCU Spider-Man. Just to note: When he called I was in an airport on my way to direct a horror film, so you will hear elements of the airport in the background. Either way, I thought it was a conversation worth sharing. Our artwork comes handcrafted by artists Ron Frenz, Sal Buscema, and Ray Sumser. | Cloak and Dagger (Season 5, Episode 6.1) | 17 Aug 2021 | 01:01:09
Tyrone Johnson and Tandy Bowen are Cloak and Dagger, a crime-fighting team and Light and Darkness incarnate. These partners once lived on the outskirts – as runaway teens they embraced vigilantism after their powers activated through experimental drugs. Their relationship is symbiotic: Cloak’s ability to summon and enter the Darkforce Dimension is counteracted by the psionic light Dagger emits. But they also played a key role in ’80s Spectacular Spider-Man comics and became long-time supporting characters in Spider-Man comics and events. What makes them such an important recurring role in Spider-Man’s life? We aim to find out! The stories we’ll be talking about are Spectacular Spider-Man #s 64, 69, 70, 81, 82, and Cloak and Dagger (vol. 1) #1-4. We’ll be briefly touching on Cloak and Dagger’s developments past these issues but not in great detail. We’ve just set up a mailbox for our show. | Overcoming Impossible Odds (Season 5, Episode 6) | 03 Aug 2021 | 01:08:30
Roger Stern quickly set his run on Amazing Spider-Man aside by featuring villains from other heroes’ rogues galleries. But one story in particular has become a favorite amongst comics fans while also creating a new story archetype for Spider-Man stories that we are still experiencing to this day. Amazing Spider-Man #229 and #230, also known as “Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut” is a powerhouse story on it’s own, but it left an equally gargantuan impact on the future of Spider-Man stories by establishing a new type of Spider-Man story we are calling “Overcoming Impossible Odds”. And on this week’s show we’ll be talking about those famous Juggernaut issues and some of the most memorable iterations of the themes established in that story. The stories we’ll be talking about are Amazing Spider-Man #s 229-230’s “Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut”, Amazing Spider-Man #s 269-270’s “Burn, Spider, Burn!”, Amazing Spider-Man #317’s “The Sand and the Fury”, Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 2) #s 30-35’s “Coming Home”, and Amazing Spider-Man #s 627-629’s “Something Can Stop the Juggernaut”. This episode was edited by Rick Coste, with production support from Andy Myers. Our artwork comes handcrafted by artists Ron Frenz, Sal Buscema, and Ray Sumser. | Other People’s Bad Guys (Season 5, Episode 5) | 19 Jul 2021 | 01:33:30
One of the components that had long dominated Spider-Man comics was a strict adherence to facing Spidey off against rogues invented by Ditko and Lee. However, Roger Stern had other ideas and chose to specifically avoid featuring Spidey’s rogues gallery. Instead, his Spider-Man stories pitted Spidey against the villains of his heroic peers. That’s right, today on the Amazing Spider-Talk we are talking about Bad Guys, more specifically we will be talking about… Other People’s Bad Guys! But we couldn’t do this alone! Other People’s Bad Guys demands other people! So, we’ve brought on the cohosts of the Screw It! We’re Going to Talk About Comics podcast, brothers Kevin and Will Hines! Subscribe to Screw It!
