Shakespeare on Film12 Nov 202501:53:44

We've been sitting on this idea for a while, but with Chloe Zhao's Oscar hopeful Hamnet opening this month, it seemed like as good a time as any to finally move forward with one of the biggest topics a film podcast can tackle: big-screen adaptations of the work of Elizabethen/Jacobean playwright William Shakespeare, the most-adapted writer in film history on top of being the most famous name in the history of both English drama and English literature. Such a grand subject deserves a bigger crowd, so this week, Tim is joined by no fewer than three Alternate Ending regulars: Gavin McDowell, Brian Fowler, and Caleb Wimble. Together they discuss what makes a good Shakespeare movie, what we should do with adaptations that discard the original text, and why there are such a disproportionately high number of good Macbeths. Before the main event, our regular movie roundtable covers a wide range of movies, as wide as the number of genres good old Billy S. touched on his career: Brian has caught up with Black Phone 2, Gavin celebrates Armistice Day with nice, pleasant WWI/Armenian genocide movie, 2016's The Promise, Caleb has checked out the brand-new Predator: Badlands, and thanks to Patreon supporter Robin Zimmerman, Tim is here to discuss 2015 cult film Turbo Kid.

Bride of AE - The Dentist (1996)16 Sep 202500:55:20

To kick off the Autumn of Blood, in which they discuss pre-Scream 1990s slashers, Tim and Brennan drill into the 1996 Brian Yuzna joint THE DENTIST!

Pass the Popcorn: Laura | There Was a Father | Survive Style 5+22 May 202301:26:36

This episode of Pass the Popcorn, we're joined by friend of AE, Zev Burrows to catch up on what movies we've been catching up on.  We tried to scare Zev off with our personal burial plans, stomach bugs and the under-appreciated delicacy of spaghetti and cottage cheese ... but he held on like a champ until the end!

In worth mentioning, Zev brings his thoughts on There Was a Father.  Tim reviews Evil Dead Rise and Survive Style 5+, by Patreon Christophe Romain's request. Carrie reviews the 1944 classic Laura, requested by Zev.

Make sure to check out Zev's musical stylings at his site - www.zevburrowsmusic.com

AUDIO NOTE: Please forgive the intense hail that was inflicting Wisconsin while Tim recorded.

To conclude musical month, Tim and Brennan are biting into the Disney Channel original musical Z-O-M-B-I-E-S from 2018 and parsing its truly mystifying, yet entirely blunt, themes and design.

Top 5 Most Traumatizing Films11 Apr 202301:38:07

Thanks to Patreon supporter Harold Bleacher, we're going to be prodding at some of our most sensitive emotional scar tissue in our next episode: by his request, we're going to spend our next podcast talking about the top 5 most traumatizing films we've ever seen. Expect many dead parents of wide-eyed animal children, gore effects whose cheesiness through adult eyes can't quite take the edge off of the shock they gave to a child's system, and the odd film that coldly and brutally diagnoses the darkest parts of humanity in ways that can unnerve and unsettle us even now.

Tune in!

The New York Times' Best Movies of the Century09 Sep 202501:28:54

Everybody loves to argue about a list, which is why this week's episode finds Brennan, Cameron, and Andrew digging into the recent list of the 100 best movies of the 21st Century published by The New York Times. What films made us mad? What films mad us happy? What's conspicuously missing? Check out the episode for the team's answers to these questions and more, as well as their individual ballots for the ten best films of the last 25 years. And before we get to that, three wildly different films come to the movie roundtable: Andrew watched Andrzej Żuławski's 1972 The Devil, Cameron checks out the biographical documentary It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley, and Brennan shrugs his way through Darren Aronofsky's uncharacteristic new film Caught Stealing.

Oscar-level Patron Gavin McDowell has requested that we cover non-Christian religious horror this month, so we're closing March out with a discussion of Haitian voodoo, as oh-so sensitively handled by the 1932 Bela Lugosi outing WHITE ZOMBIE!

Pass the Popcorn: Oscar Reactions | Scream VI | Blonde14 Mar 202301:23:11

This week *should* be a big week here at Alternate Ending because it is, in fact, the week of the 95th Academy Awards. Though, it's fair to say that only 33% of us loves the Oscars, another 33% tolerates them and the other % mostly avoids them by sneaking away for snacks, in order to suppress their rage.  Though, that didn't stop our Pringle-eating critic from predicting 16 of the night's 95th Academy Awards winners.

In worth mentioning, Brennan and Carrie review the newest updates from the Woodsboro crew, in Scream 6.  Tim brings his thoughts on a few of the Oscar noms, but dives deep on his thoughts of the best picture nominee, Blonde.

Tune in and we hope the episode sparks a bit of joy, in your week!

This week, Carrie and Tim decide to cut the small talk and get-right-to-it with their Oscar predictions for the upcoming awards ceremony.  But then, they didn't do that at all... and somewhere around the 45 min mark they remembered that this is a film podcast *goshdarnit* and got right down to the business of movies.

Bride of AE - Knock Knock (2015)10 Feb 202300:49:28

This month, Tim and Brennan are digging the horror movie skeletons out of the closets of actors nominated for Oscars this year! First, we're starting with Ana de Armas, who was nominated for her performance as Marilyn Monroe in Blonde. But 7 years before that, she was in the scrappy little Eli Roth exploitation film that couldn't, KNOCK KNOCK! Let's talk talk about it!

Your Movie Rocks: Lawrence of Arabia02 Sep 202501:02:06

For September's episode, Mandy welcomes back Sects, Lies, and Videotape maven Gavin McDowell, who decided to take a very different approach from his last visit and assign Mandy a movie he was pretty sure (but not positive) she'd like: David Lean's 222-minute epic and perennial greatest-film-ever candidate Lawrence of Arabia. Tune in to hear the struggles of a parent trying to find three hours and forty-two minutes for a movie night, many musings on camel sartoriality, and whether Mandy did, in fact, enjoy watching two unbelievably gorgeous men make goo-goo eyes at each other for such a long time. There may also be discussion of the film.

Pass the Popcorn to Catherine Clark: Wakanda Forever | Bodies Bodies Bodies | Triangle of Sadness14 Nov 202200:46:48

Christmas (or whatever holiday makes you giddy with glee) came early here at Alternate Ending. We're joined by one of our favorite humans, Catherine Clark!  You may have seen some of her writing contributions on ae.com, but she's also an artist, film producer and officially the best cat Mom on the planet (don't tell Tim).

If there was a contest for the person in our lives who would be the least likely to get kicked out of a Gen-Z party, Catherine would win in a landslide.  Meanwhile, Carrie still uses words like "hip" and "cool whip" in public conversations. Needless to say, their feelings on Bodies Bodies Bodies...differ.

Catherine also brings the Triangle of Sadness, which she compares to Parasite only with Woody Harrelson (there are less intriguing ways to describe a movie).

The pair round out the conversation with their perspectives on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

We promise and cross-our-hearts that this is a spoiler-free episode.

Tune in and have a great week, friends!

September 2025 Movie Preview27 Aug 202501:27:18

September might be one of the most notorious dumping grounds on the cinematic calendar, but the Alternate Ending crew is still excited enough to talk about it that Brennan has been joined by no fewer than three guests this time. Caleb, Brian, and Mandy are on hand to see if there are any silk purses to be made out of this sow's ear of a month, and as it turns out, there's one title in particular that has everybody on the panel genuinely excited. Even beyond that, a few of our brave guests try to make the case that there might be something to remain hopeful for as autumn comes along to shove summer to the side. For the movie roundtable, we have four new releases to talk about: Caleb catches up with the buzzy Netflix original KPop Demon Hunters, Mandy grimaces through the body horror relationship drama Together, and Brennan checks in on the last smash hit of the summer, Weapons. And Brian felt duty-bound to check out an icon's return to motion pictures in Sweet Revenge, and boy does everybody end up having some very strong feelings on that one...

It was a movie-palooza on this week's episode of Pass the Popcorn! Carrie brings her thoughts on Barbarian and by the request of Patreon supporter Brian Fowler, commiserates with Tim on her adoration for Smiles of a Summer Night.

Brennan and Tim take their hits on the newest nun-horror flick Prey for the Devil and takes a quick turn to the life and times of Al Yankovic as captured in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

Finally, we turn to Tim who gives us the low-down on the newest remake of All Quiet on the Western Front and by Patreon Kelleson Dale's request, Tim reviews the weird little tale of a brood of animated appliances in The Brave Little Toaster.

We also learn exactly what foods irritate our respective bowels, because this is a classy podcast.

Tune in and have a great week, friends!

Behind the Scenes - Confess, Fletch with Marcia Gay Harden19 Sep 202200:15:01

In 1985, when the first Fletch film was released in theaters, Marcia Gay Harden was a broke NYU grad student who was still 5 years away from her breakout role in Miller's Crossing. In the subsequent 37 years, Lady Marcia Gay Harden (inside joke you'll have to listen to understand) has racked up not only over 120 film and tv credits, but an Academy and Tony Award. But, as she tells it, her proudest achievement is being a mom and as any mom will tell you, a right of passage for kids going off to college is to do a tear filled drop-off, which is exactly where Marcia was on her way to do when she hopped on to chat with me about her latest film, Confess, Fletch.

While at a layover, she dished on how she landed the role as The Countess in Confess, Fletch alongside a fun ensemble, including John Hamm (taking the mantle from Chevy Chase), Lucy Punch, Kyle MacLachlan, Lorenza Izzo and John Slattery (who reunites with his Mad Man co-star Hamm).

For those who loved the original Fletch series or just a good comedy / PI romp, be sure to watch Confess, Fletch streaming everywhere, now!

Pass the Popcorn: Pearl |Come and See | The Intouchables | Saving Christmas12 Sep 202201:23:12

It's a bit of a hodgepodge this week here at AE - lots of feelings about movies, theaters, streaming services, return to work, X-rated film reviews and more!

We had a real gift bag in worth mentioning this week, too!  Thanks to Patreon Julian DeBerry, we get to enjoy the peace and calm that comes with 1985's Soviet war film Come and See. Ann Yourell had us also exploring the debatably racist French film, The Intouchables. Lastly, let us not forget the film requested by M.C. Steffen, that had Tim wanting to quit film criticism altogether, Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas.

Tune in!

Bride of AE - Carnosaur (1993)09 Sep 202200:56:10

Thanks to Oscar-level Patreon member Johnzilla, this month is all about dinosaurs! We're kicking things off the only right way, which is to discuss the Roger Corman production CARNOSAUR, which was rushed into production to compete with Jurassic Park, complete with Laura Dern's mom as the villain!
