A Little Wiser: Who Will Care for Our First Responders?24 Jan 202400:24:30

Kimi and Erica reflect on last week's episode with Matty Fiorenza, a first responder grappling with the invisible scars of PTSD. They emphasize the importance of raising awareness and taking inspired action to support the mental and emotional health of our first responders. Kimi shares the backstory of how we discovered Matty and the heartbreaking connection they have in common.

A valuable takeaway that resonated with both Erica and Kimi was the idea that help can come from the most unexpected places. He referred to the ordinary people who showed him kindness and compassion during his darkest days as "angels." Throughout the episode, he mentioned them by name and credited them with helping him survive.

OUR CHALLENGE TO YOU: Is there someone in your past that showed you compassion when you needed it most? Perhaps it was a teacher, nurse, neighbor, grocery store clerk, family member or friend? Consider how their kindness impacted you then, and thank them for the positive role they played in your life.

And finally, a reminder to those who may need it:

Everybody has a purpose. We need you here.

50. Scott Harrison had become the worst person he knew28 Apr 202101:02:24

From the outside looking in, he was living the dream. Private jets, exclusive parties, money, models and celebrities. But on the inside, Scott Harrison was rotting away. After a decade of heavy drugs, booze and blackouts he came to a realization: his life was morally and spiritually bankrupt. Hungry for drastic change, he packed up and shipped out to volunteer aboard a military hospital vessel off the coast of Liberia in West Africa. For the first time, Scott witnessed devastating poverty and widespread illness, children drinking dirty, diseased water. And he had an epiphany. If he could just figure out how to get clean water to the masses, he could be a doctor to millions. In 2006, Scott went back to New York where he created the model for what would become a revolutionary non-profit endeavor, Charity: Water, which to date has raised $500 million and helped over 12 million people.

47. Marius Woodward was burned over 75% of his body03 Mar 202100:58:12

Marius was only 8 years old when a house fire in his native country of Romania took the lives of his parents and burned over 75% of his body, leaving him without fingers or a nose. After many months in the hospital without visitors, two American girls got word of his story and started visiting him almost every day, forming a close friendship and eventually raising money to bring him to America for treatment. A year later, he was adopted by one of the girls’ family. This is a story of miracles. Of optimism. Of chosen family and abundant kindness. And it just might inspire you to do something nice for someone you don’t know.

As a father, Gary did what any parent would do to help his best friend and wonderful son Brian heal from a substance abuse disorder. He got referrals to treatment programs staffed with good people with good intentions. But what he came to understand after Brian tragically took his own life is that these programs were using unproven, outdated methodologies. Real solutions based on actual science were sitting untouched in medical journals. Today, Gary is on a mission to change the treatment system in the United States, educate the public that addiction is a very treatable disease when treated the right way, and erase the stigma and shame that keep so many from finding real hope and possibility in recovery.
